‘Leave our buses alone’ Tāhunanui residents cry foul over transport plan

Charles Anderson Members of the Tāhunanui community are crying foul over proposals to shift bus routes off Muritai St and onto the main

highway – a move they say will be dangerous and at the expense of the suburb’s most vulnerable. Currently, the Nelson City Council has out for submission the regional land

transport plan with a view to develop a 10-year transport vision for the Top of the South. However, one aspect of that plan has some Tāhunanui residents scratching their heads. In the

consultation document is a map that seems to suggest moving bus routes off Muritai St, that has recently been redeveloped for bicylce lanes, footpaths and bus stops, and onto Tāhunanui Drive

– the state highway. “How the hell are we going to cross the main road?” says elderly resident Helen Brown.

FROM PAGE 1 “It’s dangerous.” John Gilbertson of the Tāhunanui Business and Community Association says that the proposal is “buried” in the council’s website which means the community hasn’t had the chance to digest it and make submissions. “They want input but we haven’t had any opportunity to be asking our community.” He believes that the plan, which mentions ‘express lanes’, is about putting four lanes onto Tāhunanui Drive. “Our community has been against that for years” Tāhunanui School principal Barbara Bowen says her main concern is over safety. “Our children catch the bus at five minutes to 3pm. stops would disadvantage them even further. Helen Brown says the other concern is the distance it would

be for elderly reseidents to walk to catch the bus. Some have moved close to the bus stops just so they did not have to walk far, she says. John says he has planned a community meeting on March 23 at 7pm at Tāhunanui School so people can be informed. “We don’t want the bus to be moved from here. Leave our buses alone.” Regional land transport committee chair Brian McGurk says that the consualtion on the document had been going on for some time but there were constraints of having plans feed into the Long Term Plan. This means some timelines had been compressed. You can look at the draft regional transport plan and make subimssions here. https://shape. nels on.govt.nz/connec tingnelson

Historic rescue celebrated with new $1.4m vessel Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Nelson finally has its brandnew vessel to patrol our high seas. The $1.4 million purpose-built vessel is the result of many years of fundraising and a $215,000 helping hand from Sealord. After 17 years of service to the community, Coastguard Nelson’s current vessel, Talley’s Marine Rescue, has come to the end of its life. In its place is Hohapata – Sealord Rescue. Hohapata Kahupuku was part of one of the most famous sea rescues in the region's history. In 1863, the crew of the

Delaware sailing from Nelson to Napier, became trapped on rocks in Wakapuaka. Hohapata swam into the raging waters to grasp a line thrown and rescued the crew from inevitable death. Honouring Hohapata's heroics, Coastguard Nelson unveiled its new rescue vessel on Saturday morning. With the Nelson Coastguard covering one of the largest areas of coastline in the country, the decision was made that a stateof-the-art rescue vessel was needed. Sealord sought input from Ngāti Koata to assist with the naming of the vessel. Sealord CEO Doug Paulin says the story behind the name

acknowledges everyday people doing extraordinary things. “It’s a very fitting tribute to a vessel and volunteer crew that are dedicated to saving the lives of people in the Top of the South." The new 11.3 metre Naiad is powered by two Hamilton jet engines for versatility and safety, with an estimated top speed of 40 knots. The new vessel will set Coastguard up for the next 20 years of saving lives in the Nelson community. Ratapu Hippolite, a greatgrandchild of Hohapata, fought back tears as he said it was an honour and a privilege for his ancestor to be celebrated for his actions.

Elizabeth’s 25 years of service to St John Kate Russell Elizabeth Wiblin-Naughton could have retired from her job at St John when she tuned 65, but she didn’t want to - she enjoyed it too much. In fact, she continued working there for another 12 years until she was 76 and now volunteers within the organisation. “I always said if I woke up one morning and didn’t want to go to work, that would be the day I’d

hand my resignation in.” The only reason she did leave was to spend more time with her husband. Elizabeth, now 80, was recognised for 25 years of service on Saturday night at the St John Nelson district awards. She started her St John career as the area secretary, and it didn’t take long for her to impress. “May 19, 1994 - that’s the date I started. I was supposed to

just be helping them out until they found a replacement, but they never bothered trying to find one.” Elizabeth was instrumental in establishing the medical alarm service in Nelson in 1995. “I insisted. I would have phone calls all the time from people wanting medical alarms and I would have to send them to security firms, so I started

enquiring to the district manager,” she says. “In the end I was told, ‘if you want them, you do them’, so I started them and I still remember installing the first alarm.” Elizabeth worked in this field until her retirement but wore many other hats within the organisation over the years. She helped with fundraising, community services and the

Nelson Fellowship group, which she helped to establish. She was also the events officer in Nelson between 1995 and 2007. “Then, I decided I might as well help them with the shop,” she says. She joined the St John Community Shop team in 2018 and is a valued fashion merchandiser on a Thursday afternoon. “I’m there simply to do whatever is asked. It doesn’t matter what it is, I’m there to help.” Elizabeth says it was nice to be recognised on Saturday, but “isn’t there for the awards”. “Right from the start I was there to help, not gain awards. I loved it, the whole time.” She says she appreciates everything that St John does in the community. “Right from the administration to the volunteers. The service is one of the most needed in New Zealand. It is there for everybody.” Altogether, 43 volunteers and paid St John people were recognised at Saturday’s awards at the Headingly Centre, with recipients having a combined total of 585 years of service between them. Awards from five-year certificates to 45 years’ service were presented.

‘Obnoxious’ man convicted after disorderly bar chase Erin Bradnock A 25-year-old man has been convicted of disorderly behaviour, resisting arrest and willful trespass following a chaotic incident at a Stoke bar on a Wednesday morning. Levi Andrew Crosswell appeared before Nelson District Court on Monday following an incident at Stoke Turf Sports Bar and Hotel on November 4 last year. The incident began once police arrived at the Turf for

an unrelated matter when the defendant began acting disorderly around 11am. Crosswell believed he arrived at the bar around 10am with a friend. When Crosswell was subsequently asked to leave by the duty manager, he refused and continued to argue, swear and film police. Once removed from the premises by police he entered back through a side door where he was warned he would be arrested if he did not leave.

The defendant continued to argue and film police when he was told he was under arrest for disorderly behaviour. The defendant then ran from police and, after a short onfoot chase, he was handcuffed. Judge Richard Russell described the actions as “obnoxious and difficult”, telling the defendant “you're the author of your own misfortune”. Crosswell was ordered to pay a $250 fine and 60 hours of community work.

‘He’s not dead, he’s just sunbathing’ Kate Russell An elderly alpaca has been the cause for concern for Waimea Rd motorists. Zito, who resides in the paddock next to the Nelson SPCA, likes to sunbathe by the roadside fence - however his unusual sleeping style has prompted some worried calls from the public. “We get quite a few calls and also people coming in who are worried about the deceased alpaca in the paddock,” says staff member Jineen Stringer. “We had one call and two people stop in within a minute of each other with concern for him. Zito likes to give everyone a bit of a scare, but he really loves to sunbathe.” The 17-year-old pedigree alpaca has become quite the celebrity on social media after the centre took to Facebook to let everyone know that he is

alive and well. “Gosh, I saw him lying in the grass the other week, hot as, and I thought he was dead too,” said one comment. The life expectancy of an alpaca is between 15 and 20 years old. Others suggested that they install a sign on the grass to reassure passers-by. “He likes to lie down on the pine needles. It’s twice a day, usually in the afternoon and the evening. He’s just extremely relaxed,” says Jineen. Zito arrived at the SPCA eleven years ago because he doesn’t like living with other alpacas. According to Jineen, Zito thinks the sheep in the paddock are his flock and he is “very protective” of them. “He’s very tame, he’s in excellent health and loves his nuts in the morning.”

Nelson homes hit $710k median price Staff Reporter

Nelson has seen record high house prices, or equal high for the last four months in a row, the latest data from the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) shows The median price of a house in Nelson was $710,000 in February, an equal high with the month

before. That compared to the national median of $780,000, and represented a 23.5 per cent increase on the same time last year. REINZ chief executive Bindi Norwell says the Top of the South all saw an increase in median house prices in February, with Nelson increasing 23.5 per cent annually to a record equal price of $710,000.

This was the same as January 2021 and the fourth consecutive month of record highs. Tasman prices have increased 12.8 per cent annually to $750,000. "Open homes are busy across all three regions, with good levels of attendance due to limited available stock, which in turn is creating more competition between purchasers

and putting further upward pressure on prices," says Bindi. "Properties are selling quickly with the Tasman region experiencing its lowest number of days to sell in a February month (28 days) since 2003 and the Marlborough region experiencing its lowest number of days to sell in a February month (29 days) since 2007."

New DHB boss plans new ways of delivering healthcare Jenny Nicholson Hailing from the deep south, Nelson Marlborough Health’s (NMH) new chief executive Lexie O’Shea says she loves Nelson but breathing Central Otago air will always be something special. She’s a country girl and feels growing up in the beachy town of Riverton gave her freedom to grow and be herself. “As a child I never felt I had to be in a traditionally girly role. With two brothers and three sisters we were all treated the same. Both my parents worked so we were independent and resourceful,” says Lexie. She started her career in the hospital lab and says she loved the world of test tubes. She was happy there until asked to work on a project outside the lab, and from there was offered opportunity after opportunity. As chief operating officer and deputy chief executive of Southland’s hospitals, Lexi was involved with the Invercargill Hospital rebuild so comes to this position with experience. Plans to rebuild Nelson Hospital have been in the pipeline for more than a decade but are now supposed to get underway this term of government. An ‘Indicative Business Case’ for the project, which was submitted in May, was costed at about $713 million. In June 2020, a hospital stocktake throughout the country reported that one of Nelson Hospital's main buildings was in the worst condition of any hospital buildings in New Zealand. Lexie says the rebuild is exciting and she is committed to working to the time frame

New Nelson Marlborough Health chief executive Lexie O’Shea is excited about taking up the role's challenges. Photo: Jenny Nicholson. set by the Minister of Health. While the hospital rebuild is important and exciting to her, Lexie knows it isn’t a two-year event and is looking at changes in the interim. To create space for expansion, she will be relocating her office staff to make room for clinical services. “It’s amazing how creative and cost effective we can be. We already had office space in Richmond and some staff have already relocated there,” she says. Lexie is passionate about health promotion and preventing the need for hospital care where possible. In her personal life this means walking or running most days, walking meetings with staff where possible and standing for Zoom meetings. She starts her day with a wander around one of the departments. For the region’s healthcare it means delivering care in a contemporary way. Though changing the way care was provided was a necessity during lockdown, lessons learned have been valuable. Telehealth is now available in various departments, including oncology. This

means patients can access care from the comfort of home, surrounded by support rather than battling for a carpark and catching a shuttle. Lexie says the hospital is only a small part of health services, but it is an expensive part. “Hospitals are there for complex and episodic-type cares, and the rest is in the community.” One of her major focuses is better health outcomes for the more vulnerable in the community. There is discussion around delivering care to families rather than to individuals, providing healthcare outside the typical 8am to 5pm model and teams going to where vulnerable people are, rather than asking them to access health services. Lexie is very aware of the high number of over 65s in the community and sees it as very important to support community initiatives that help keep them fit and healthy. The introduction of ‘swoop teams’ who go to patients and deliver early intervention help keep people in their own homes and out of hospital where possible.

They also support rest homes to ensure residents can avoid hospital admittance unless needed. Elective surgery waiting lists are met with a national scoring tool. While she admits the tool isn’t perfect, Lexie is proud of how NMH has performed, achieving 110 percent of the Government’s target in 2019-2020. For hip replacements, the goal is for a patient to be seen within 100 days of referral and to have had surgery within another 100 days. “We have a superb team of people going above and beyond. The admin team are the glue and it’s a big team effort. Lockdown was a blip in the timeframes, but we are working hard to be back on track in 18 months to two years,” she says. “We want to move from ‘what can we do’ to ‘what matters to you?’” says Lexie. She says she is in the honeymoon period of the job having only started in February but is rapidly coming up to speed. Lexie says individualised care, staff development and staff wellbeing are of primary importance to her.

Helping deaf children find connections Erin Bradnock Mailis Calvert is just like any nine-year-old - she loves dancing, music and swimming, though she also happens to be deaf. When Mailis and her family moved from Dunedin to Nelson at the end of 2019, her mother Katya Blair Calvert was having trouble finding any social or support groups for deaf or hard of hearing children in the region. “In Dunedin, there’s quite a well-established community there for kids like Mailis. It’s so important for kids to connect with each other and it helps them build a strong sense of identity,” she says. So, Katya took matters into her own hands and set up a Facebook group at the start of March called ‘Deaf Kids Nelson’. With just one Facebook post, interest to join the group came flooding in. “Overnight I heard from three different families interested in meeting up. I wanted to

Katya Blair Calvert with her daughter Mailis Calvert who was born deaf. Photo: Erin Bradnock. create that group so that kids can start to feel good about who they are and own their deafness,” Katya says. Mailis was born deaf and received a cochlear implant when she was three years old meaning she’s able to hear when she has her external device switched on, or as she says, has her “ears on”. For Mailis, being deaf is not a ‘disability’ as it doesn’t hold her back. Her mother says she is a confident kid that loves horse-riding and jazz dancing. “Kids at school always ask, ‘how can you dance if you

don’t like music?’ I love music.” Mailis says. Mailis says the most frustrating part about being deaf is some kids' misunderstandings about it. “Sometimes I won’t hear what a kid says at school and when I ask ‘excuse me what did you say?’ they just sigh and say ‘never mind…’ instead of repeating it,” she says. When Mailis first arrived at Henley School, she was surprised that no one knew sign language, as that is what she was used to in Dunedin. She’s able to hear her teachers clearly through hearing UP TO 60%OFF STOREWIDE*

assistive devices that her teachers wear round their necks. “My teacher Ms Cahill has started learning sign language. She’s been really enthusiastic about it and calls my deafness my ‘superpower’." Katya knows that for some children who are hearing impaired, it can be quite isolating. “It’s so important for kids to connect with other kids who are like them and have that understanding.” Mailis is eager to meet more deaf people in the region as she had in Dunedin and Katya is just as excited. “I think it’s great for deaf or hard of hearing kids to see Mailis be so confident. I think it makes them feel better about their deafness,” says Katya. Deaf Kids Nelson has its first official meet up over Easter weekend with a sausage sizzle and Easter egg hunt on the cards. Sanitarium representative Pete Davis says it felt great to be able to run the event amid uncertainties surrounding Covid-19 level restrictions. "We weren't sure if we would even have been able to run the event in the last two weeks," he says. "Although it's been a tough year for everyone, to be able to have kids out there running swimming and biking today is very rewarding," he says.

Preloved artwork wanted for exhibition Kate Russell Reporter

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz

A “wonderfully eclectic” range of preloved artworks from around the region are looking to be reloved. The Nelson Suter Art Society is holding an exhibition of secondhand artwork for sale and is still looking for submissions from the public. ‘Preloved Reloved’ will be held at the McKee Gallery, within Nelson’s Suter Art Gallery from May 31 to June 13. Society president Philippa Eberlein says they have already had around 45 enquiries. “A lot of the entries are starting to come back. A lot of them are Nelson scenes - lovely water colours, the mountains, the sea.” Philippa says there will be

room for around 80 artworks, depending on their size. Committee member Clare Williams says it’s the perfect opportunity for people to declutter and sell on valuable art. “People who are downsizing or moving away, handling an estate, or maybe you just want a change. It’ll be totally eclectic - there’s going to be something that everyone will treasure.” The society will be taking applications until May 2, and Philippa says they would love to get some more 3D work and ceramics. Photographs, sculptures,

fibre art and ethnic art are welcome too. The work must be to a good standard, ready to install, and appropriately priced. The Nelson Suter Art Society is New Zealand’s third oldest art society and is run entirely by volunteers. To apply, interested sellers should contact the society at Philippa Eberlein and Clare Williams with Gabrielle Coote’s Jane Evans nelsonsuterartsociety@gmail. painting, an example of the type of artwork they hope to get for the com ‘Preloved Reloved’ exhibition. Your Voice Appreciation for treatment: Having recently been the recipient of life-saving care at Nelson Public Hospital, may I utilise your newspaper to convey my appreciation to those involved. I am deeply indebted to Dr. Carmen Ruiz, ably assisted by Dr. Ros Pochin and their specialised theatre crew, for the skilful diagnosis and subsequent surgery. Although words seem hopelessly inadequate, ‘thank you, thank you, for your persistence and expertise’. To all those other carers who played an important part in my recuperation, from senior nursing staff to those with seemingly more menial duties, please accept my gratitude for your patience and attention. Along with my wife and family, I thank you all for your efforts. Colin Bowden New library: We endorse the Nelson City Council’s ambition

New Zealand should take up Australia’s offer of opening up a Trans-Tasman bubble allowing families to reunite, skilled workers in and to boost our ailing tourism sector. We are a year into the Covid pandemic. I was totally supportive of the blunt boarder closure last year and the lockdown, but we now need a more sophisticated approach.

of creating a flagship public library that “Nelsonians can be really proud of - that rivals the best libraries in New Zealand.” Reading underpins all the skills needed to enable New Zealanders of every age to make better lives for themselves, their whanau, and their communities. The ability to read and comprehend text, whether in print or by digital means, is strongly linked with educational success and economic wellbeing, and is core to living fully in today’s world. We are not born with the ability to read, it must be learned. Children who have stories read to them hear up to one million more words by the time they are five, setting them up for better outcomes at school and in life. Without the ability to read, everything in life is a greater struggle and full participation in society is inevitably limited. Public libraries provide free and equitable access to such skills. People who read what they find interesting, enlightening, amusing and entertaining become learners for life. Practice that is

Australia, like New Zealand has mostly eliminated Covid. Cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth have had fewer recent cases than Auckland and longer periods with no community cases. It makes no sense to have the same 14 day quarantine rules for people coming from Australia, as for people coming from countries like the US, UK and India

editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz facebook.com/nelsonweekly www.nelsonweekly.co.nz pleasurable is much more likely to be continued. Like all skills, reading improves with practice, and the more you practice the easier it gets, and the more you get out of it. If Nelson City Council is hoping to lead the way, the planned library to form part of the Maitai Riverside precinct is the right place to start. Well done team. Great effort for such an amazing lady with an enormous heart. Caro Mcfadden

Really great for Nelson brilliant to see the city

where Covid is rampant. We know from the MIQ Covid testing that we are getting lots of cases out of these countries but not out of Australia. We should still require travellers from Australia to have a test before boarding a plane. We can isolate a region or state where needed if there were localised reoccurrences. A Trans-Tasman bubble would make a huge difference to thou-

sands of families and businesses. I have dozens of heart breaking stories from Nelsonians of family members dying alone, people seriously unwell and families desperate to be reunited. We have many tourism businesses on the brink of bankruptcy in places like Queenstown and Franz Josef but also here in Nelson and Tasman. Thousands of jobs are at risk. The Govern-

Tash Taylor Headstone restorer to continue work: I’ve lived near the cemetery for eight years and have never seen it look so good. Brian and the volunteers are doing a service for the community “free of charge” - how often does that happen? Never. They are doing an excellent job - praise should be given, not headaches. ment cannot go on borrowing to bail them out and nor should they when there is a safe way to re-open tourism with Australia. We know a lot more about Covid than a year ago and we have many more tools to manage it. We need to get on with saliva testing, vaccine passports and risk rate our border controls. It is time to take a smarter approach. Advert.

Healing bodies and minds with song

WEDNESDAY 17 March 2021

Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Music therapist Colette Jansen is on a mission to help Nelson’s neurologically impaired through the power of song. Colette recently founded Nelsong, a choir catered to people with neurological disabilities which practices weekly at the Nelson Musical Theatre. The choir caters for a range of conditions from early dementia, brain trauma, addiction to stroke survivors. Lou Colff suffers from Parkinson’s Disease and has been coming to Nelsong sessions for a little over a month. He says has already noticed vast improvements in his movement and speech. “It loosens a lot of tension.” From Bob Marley to the Beach Boys, Nelsong covers a wide scope of genres. Lou says he particularly enjoys the sea shanties but does hope to see a few more people join

Colette Jansen, Lou Colff and Emily Sanson at the Nelson Musical Theatre. Photo: Jonty Dine. him in the choir. Colette says singing and music helps connect the brain and encourages it to develop new neurological pathways. The Nelson Tasman Music Therapy Collective started Nelsong in October of last year, however, without more members, it may not survive much longer. “It is not currently viable with such low numbers, but I am trying to grow it.” The choir performs at the

theatre on Atawhai Drive on Wednesdays from 10am and 11.30am. At just $10 per session, the cost of the venue exceeds any income she makes, but Colette says she will continue as there is a real need for music therapy. “I absolutely believe in this choir, it is not sustaining me financially, but it is my gift to Nelson.” To join Nelsong please contact Colette on 021644618 or email ntmtcollective@gmail.com

Growing up as a child, Les says he was always told to ‘treat people who you want to be treated’ and believes there are two main assets when you are in business – “one is your customer and one is your staff - you have to look after them all.”

It’s been 22 years since Les Marriott first established his business – AllTransport Refinishers Paint & Panel Repairs on Pascoe Street, Tahunanui. The company has specialist paint and panel beating tradespeople and equipment, and a purpose-built premises for any kind of vehicle repair

work people require. “When I first started out, I was down the end of Pascoe Street doing trucks and buses,” says Les. “Then we moved to our current location in order to downsize. On February 1st this year, we acquired the building next to it, which was previously occupied

by an electrical firm. After they left, we knocked out a few offices and have created more workshop space. “We are still doing trucks and buses, and we also provide restoration work. A couple of older cars we’ve worked on are now in the museum.”

AllTransport Refinishers also does a lot of insurance work, and for many years they have had a lot of big customers such as Fulton Hogan, Downers, Apex Rental Cars, Omega Rental Cars and Executive Limousines. They also do restoration work for Cartel. AllTransport are also specialised in heavy machinery and are currently doing work for Porta Hire.

The team of eight staff is comprised of Les (company owner), his granddaughter Shannon (office manager) who has been with the business for seven years, Wiki (workshop manager), three qualified painters and two qualified panel beaters. “We also have Christian onboard who is doing an apprenticeship and Navi who is a labourer. “I can give him a job; if it’s got a dent, he can repair it, prime it up and paint it.” Book your paint & panel repairs AllTransport Refinishers is located in the heart of Tahuna’s busy industrial zone at 121 Pascoe Street. “People are welcome to pop in and book their vehicle in for repair work or they can give us a call and ask for a quote,” says Shannon. “We can also go out to see people.” There is a courtesy car available for when your vehicle is being repaired. For professional property management – choose Summit Summit Property Management is the largest and longest serving property management company in the Nelson Marlborough region. From small beginnings in the 1990’s, Summit Property Management has grown substantially from excellent word of mouth and referral of new clients. We have always focused on the core areas of customer service and industry leading systems, doing our upmost to provide a personal yet professional service, with communication as the key. At Summit Property Management we have offices in each local town; Nelson, Stoke, Richmond, Motueka, Blenheim and Picton – this way we have our property managers looking after a small geographic area, and being local, they are able to keep a close eye on their client’s rental properties and be there when we are needed. This gives our clients real peace of mind that things are being well looked after. All of our property managers at Summit are put through NZQA training, and they keep up to date with all the latest legislation so they can professionally carry out their roles and give real value to the service provided, whilst our clients can keep their investments at arm’s length. We are a busy department, and being Nelson Marlborough’s largest property management provider, we get great deals from trades people

and service people to pass onto our clients often at trade rates. We can also get repairs and maintenance arranged quickly to avoid deterioration and keep our tenants happy – happy tenants equals happy landlords! If you are looking for great communication from a property manager, then look no further than the team at Summit. We make a real effort to make personal phone calls to our clients rather than just send off e-mails and that way we can hold open discussions and often work out solutions together. Currently we are experiencing a high demand for rental properties by good tenants, a number of whom are in our other properties already. We have a comprehensive background checking system and take care of all the pesky paperwork for you. We also provide regular written routine property inspections which are now a requirement from most insurance companies covering rental properties. Right now, we have a special deal for new clients – we are offering the first two months management service for free, which includes the transfer of the management of your rental property from another company fully on your behalf, and we also have great discounts for owners of more than one rental property. Marchfest is a celebration of craft beer, music, and food. Dubbed ‘NZ’s Big Little Craft Beer Festival,’ Marchfest is celebrating its 14th year. Rain or shine, the event will take place this Saturday, 20 March from noon until 9.30pm at Founders Heritage Park. Nelson being New Zealand’s sole hop growing area, Marchfest is positioned right amongst the abundant hop harvest season. The 15 selected craft breweries from around the country have crafted brand new brews specifically for the festival - never previously been tasted by the public. Every year is different and all beers on the day make their debut at the festival. With beer of course goes music and this year is no exception. Ten live bands across the Beggs Main Music Tent and the FlexiTenz Tasting Bar featuring headliner Racing, The Eastern, Hoody Time, DJ Tunesifter, Sonoraw,

Tim Allen & The Two, Rocket Zombie and more. The ever popular Cryer Malt Brew Zone is back this year. It’s your chance to learn everything you need to know about making your own great craft beer at home. There are opportunities to

get up-close and personal with some commercial brewers. Festival-goers can also pop into the dedicated FlexiTenz Tasting Bar. Come and sit at a table, sample a paddle of five taster-sized beers before going to the main bars to enjoy your favourites.

WEDNESDAY 17 March 2021

Marchfest is not just all about beer. Stoke seeing double with twin signing Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Twins Asher and Amanaki Veamatahau are as close as they are competitive. Growing up, the brothers would constantly try to beat each other at whatever they did. “Being twins we were pretty much even so we always had

to see who was better, faster or stronger,” says Asher. They admit sometimes this sometimes escalated to the point of a punch up, but they would always shake hands afterwards. A competition which began when born just a minute apart, little has separated the athletes ever since. This is reflected in their sporting

journeys which have also been nearly identical to date. Born in Auckland, Asher and Amanaki grew up playing rugby league and their future seemed destined for the 13-man code after moving to Australia as teenagers. The twins spent time in various NSW Cup sides, however, couldn’t quite crack first grade in the highly competitive environment that is Australian rugby league. “There is a lot of politics and stuff like that.” They would train with some greats of the modern era though, including the Melbourne ‘big three’ of Cooper Cronk, Billy Slater and Cameron Smith. “They were just a different level.” In 2019, the two men made the move to rugby and England. “We decided as a family to switch to union because it is

Photo: Jonty Dine. more worldwide and there are more opportunities and from there, we went to England to develop our skills,” says Asher. Amanaki says it was a difficult but enjoyable adjustment to make. “It’s different, it’s cold but we enjoyed the switch, it’s less physical and there is a lot more room to run.” After two seasons, the 24-year-old twins made the call to come home to New Zealand as the Coronavirus pandemic raged out of control in the United Kingdom. Stoke then picked up the powerhouses who are set to debut in the Tasman Trophy this season as they look to push for Mako selection. Unsurprisingly, the twins play together at second five and centre and will look to cement themselves as the starting midfield at Greenmeadows in 2021. “They are good blokes, this team has

potential, and we want to progress to the next level. The Mako are very strong but that’s the goal,” says Amanaki. Religion is a huge part of the Veamatahau’s lives and they spend as much time at church as they do at the footy field. The twins also swear off drugs and alcohol, a decision they made together when they were young. Having grown up around addiction, the two men say they vowed not to waste their talents. Despite the culture that can often surround sport, Asher and Amanaki have become used to teammates enjoying a beer in the clubrooms. The brothers are incredibly close off the field, having lived together all our lives. “You can’t separate us,” says Asher. “We have that bond that we will always be connected even when we are separated.”

A 99-run opening stand between Tom Ingham and Joseph O'Connor helped Waimea Toi Toi United to an upset victory over Athletic College Old Boys in T20 action on Saturday. A patient half century from Ingham was complemented by a 29-ball 41 from O'Connor as the opposition toiled for 12 overs before finally getting the breakthrough. The Tigers failed to fully capitilise on the solid platform but added a further 51 runs to the total for the loss of just three wickets. Ollie Jones-Allen and Glen Baumfield kept the batters in check and returned tidy figures as Mason Thelin and Billy Powick both finished unbeaten with healthy strike rates. ACOB lost Shane White early in the chase and struggled to build and significant partnerships. Jones-Allen backed up his efforts with the ball, top scoring with 28, however, consistent wickets ensured his side fell 26 runs shy of the target. Elsewhere, Stoke/Nayland

Nelson mustered just 71 in 18.3 overs, Eginton ripping through the order to claim the best figures of the season so far with 5/6. It was Eginton's second five wicket-haul of the competition. Stoke made light work of the modest total, needing just under nine overs to claim the win. Ryan Edwards powered his side across the line with 25 off 15, while Ronan Restieaux provided some consolation for

college with an impressive spell of 2/12. Stoke's win sees them remain top of the table with three wins from four. In the round's final game, Nelson Griffin Harsh Visavadiya scored over half his side's runs as Wanderers defeated Wakatu by five wickets. Wakatu struggled its way to 105/9 off its 20 overs, Visavadiya also picking up a wicket and a run out. The allrounder then scored 60no off 45 balls, however Wanderers was made to work for the win, getting home with just three balls to spare.

Stilwell retains national title

Local driver Julian Stilwell retained his Formula 1 national title at Lake Rotoiti over the weekend as hundreds packed the lake for two days of power boat racing. Organisers of The ENZED Rotoiti Power boat club say big crowds and perfect weather made it an ideal weekend. The National regatta was as held on Saturday with an ambitious programme of 37 races from the powerful GP hydroplanes right through to the entertaining clubman racers who provided close racing all day. Julian Stilwell drove to glory in his Johnston Associates craft however his Sunday racing was ended with engine issues. Likewise Formula 3 was taken out by local driver Jason Stewart in his reliable craft The Ghost who raced consistently

over two days. Grand National Hydroplane title was won by Invercargill driver Shane Harvey in Renegade continuing a great South Island regatta. The event was not without incident with several spectacular crashes testing event safety procedures and rescue crews who all performed with distinction. Organiser Joe Blakiston says the crowds gathered were the biggest in years and positive feedback was very encouraging especially the standard of commentary, the consistent racing and lunchtime warbird flyover from the Blenheim based Yak 3 Full Noise. “We have a few things to work on for next year to make it even better but the sunshine and perfect lake conditions absolutely sealed the event success.”

Valued Team brings Wealth of Experience

Staff are a massive part of The Bike Station. “Without them, we wouldn’t be here today,” Rochelle says. From the outset, Brendon and Rochelle have been focussed on having high-quality staff and, because they all have significant experience with bikes, the couple have 100% faith in their ability to provide fantastic service. Yohann, who is from the UK, says, “It’s been useful to experience how bike shops operate in other countries, including New Zealand. I picked Nelson because of its awesome mountainbiking trails and The Bike Station had cool brands, a nice workshop and it’s a great place to work.” Meanwhile, two-time national track cycling champion and national record

holder Kaio, loves working at The Bike Station while teaching young bike enthusiasts (in schools) how to ride and it helps build up the local junior base. Hunter, who has recently left college has been working fulltime at the store since November last year. “I’ve done a lot of mountainbike racing, so my passion has inspired me to work here as a bike mechanic and be part of the mountainbiking community. It’s an awesome business and getting to work on bikes all day long is great.” Lindsay, who has been with The Bike Station for just under two years, says he had been looking to get back into the bike industry as a mechanic after a stint in Whistler, Canada. “This is a nice place to work; a good bunch of guys. They have the same kind of passion that I have for mountainbiking, so it’s a no-brainer really.” Finally, Sam began working for the business in December after moving from Auckland. “I started as a customer and ended up working here; I love the team; we all get on well. It’s always a good sign of a great workplace
