Tramper reunited with family Charles Anderson An experienced tramper who was feared missing in Golden Bay has been reunited with her family after she became lost in the Kahurangi National Park.

Police are praising their Golden Bay volunteer LandSAR colleagues for the successful rescue on the Kaituna Track. The woman was running the track on Sunday afternoon and was expected to be picked up

by her husband and children at the Golden Bay end of the track around 6pm. However, she did not arrive as planned, and the woman’s husband called police after shortly after midnight.

Senior Constable Dave Cogger, police search and rescue incident controller, says her husband did, however, receive a text message around 7.35am today reporting that she was lost.

He says it’s likely that the message was sent out the previous night, but she may have run into intermittent cell coverage overnight.

The contestants behind Dancing for a Cause gathered on Sunday to have their first dress rehearsal ahead of the big day on Saturday. The event brings together eight local personalities partnered each with a trained ballroom dancer. Each will perform a ballroom dance in front of a panel of judges in an attempt to be declared the Nelson Dancing for a Cause winner. Organiser Emma SilkeFrench says there are still a few tickets to sell but she is hoping it will be a packed event. “It’s been a long, hard road

with Covid and trying to regather our momentum. It will just be fantastic when those doors open and we have a show.” She says if everyone dances how they should it will be an “awesome” night with amazing moves, costumes and music. “The spectators will be on the edge of their seats.” All proceeds from the event at the Trafalgar Centre goes towards supporting Nelson Tasman Hospice. People can still make donations to the cause at https:// dancingforacause.co.nz/ contestants/. Read about some of the contestents on pages 8 and 9.

Tramper reunited with family FROM PAGE 1 The woman was an experienced tramper and adventure runner, and had warm clothing, water and food, but was not prepared to stay out overnight. Dave says that at around 2am the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter was deployed to search the tracks in the area, however the aerial search was unsuccessful. “Three LandSAR teams from Golden Bay that attended did a great job, the first being deployed at around 4am,” Dave says. “One team went in from each end of the track to ensure that they didn’t

miss the woman coming out. “They were tracking the women’s shoe prints to try and work out where she left the track and became disoriented.” It emerged that the woman had deviated from the track slightly when she became lost, but the next day, when it became light she found it again. She was located by one of the LandSAR teams shortly before 9am on Monday. She was uninjured, and was walked out by the team. The other SAR teams made it back out by around 1pm. Dave says the woman was pleased to be reunited with her grateful family.

Nelson man not guilty A 21-year-old Nelson man who admitted stabbing two men in Queenstown in 2019 has been found not guilty after saying he acted in self defence. The jury trial for Jack James Harrington, of Nelson, concluded before Judge Bernadette Farnan in the Invercargill District Court last week. Harrington was charged with two counts of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm to George McKenzie Nielson and Ryan Graham Boe, after an incident in the resort town about 2.20am on August 18, 2019. In her opening address, Crown solicitor Mary-

Jane Thomas said there was a fight between "drunk, stupid and young men". Someone from the complainant's group made a "dumb comment" about a hat, which sparked an argument and the fighting ensued, she said. At one point on CCTV footage, the jury would see Boe running towards a man in Harrington's group before hitting him over the head with a bottle, she said. Next in the incident, Harrington rushed in, pulled out a knife and stabbed Boe four times, before stabbing Nielson and fleeing. The jury was asked to determine the level of

violence applied and the circumstances surrounding the incident. Both complainants were flown to Dunedin Hospital for surgery — Boe sustained lacerations to his liver while Nielsen had them to his stomach and a wound to his bladder. Defence counsel Bill Dawkins asked jurors to look carefully at the case "through the lens" of the defendant — what the circumstances were, from Harrington's point of view, and what he was confronted with when he had the knife. The jury found Harrington not guilty on both counts. –NZ Herald

‘Milestone’ tīeke release at Brook Sanctuary Staff Reporter Up to 40 South Island tīeke (saddlebacks) were released into the Brook Waimārama Sanctuary last week. It is the first reintroduction of a species since the sanctuary built its pest proof fence in 2016, and the first time in over 100 years there have been tīeke in the region. The first group were delivered by helicopter from Motuara Island last Monday. Sanctuary chief executive Ru Collin says that the release of the tīeke is a “milestone” for native species recovery in Nelson. “Tīeke were once part of our natural forest ecosystem. The sanctuary is now ready to provide a safe pest-free fenced haven for the first South Island mainland population. “We will do all we can to ensure they thrive in our care and hope that in the long-term we will see a stable population here over-flowing into the Mount Richmond forest beyond the fence.” The South Island tīeke was once widespread throughout the South Island and Stewart Island but their slow breeding cycle and tendency to nest, forage and roost on or near ground level meant they stood little chance

They were extinct on the South Island and Stewart Island by about 1900. The population that survives today is descended from 36 birds saved from rat infestation on the South Cape islands in the 1960s and translocated to predator-free islands. Chris Hawkes, the chair of the Brook Waimārama Sanctuary board of trustees, says the occasion is a result of many years work. “It marks the start of the ultimate purpose and multiple

objectives of the sanctuary for preservation of our native species, protection of our heritage for future generations and well-being for the people of the region.” The birds will be monitored by staff and volunteers, and visitors will be asked to record any sightings with sanctuary staff. Keeping the sanctuary pest-free will be critical to the survival of the tīeke, and the Brook Waimārama Sanctuary Trust is seeking extra volunteers to help with pest surveillance and monitoring.

Maitai recreation hub to be developed George Turner Families, walkers, runners and cyclists will have a new place to set off on adventures as a location for the Maitai Recreation Hub has been confirmed at the Waahi Taakaro Golf Course. Concept designs for the new hub are now underway after Nelson City Council confirmed the site in a Community and Recreation Committee meeting

last Thursday. The hub will build upon the existing facilities at the golf course, and council says the impact on the golf playing area will be minimal. It is expected to become a destination for families, with proposed attractions such as a pump track and skills park. Community and recreation committee chair Tim Skinner says the site’s location was one of the most beautiful places in

the region and would provide a fantastic new amenity for locals and visitors alike. "The hub isn't just for cyclists. Everybody will be able to take advantage of these facilities and enjoy spending time in the reserve.” The new hub is expected to relieve some of the pressure from the popular Codgers Recreation Hub in The Brook. It will serve as a base for easier, family-friendly off-road cycling

and walking tracks to be developed in the Maitai Valley in the future. The council says it has worked closely with the Nelson Mountain Bike Club, Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust, the Waahi Taakaro Golf Club and Sport Tasman on the proposed site of the new hub and will continue to do so throughout the development of the project. Council has an interim agreement with neighbouring

landowners Koata Ltd that allows all users of Codgers and Fringed Hill to secure free recreational access to the tracks via online registration. The nearby Sharlands area has a focus on mountain biking and access is granted solely via membership of the Nelson Mountain Bike Club. Council officers will now continue to work on the design of the hub, and construction is expected to begin in spring 2021.

Hundreds streamed through the doors of Nelson’s newest attraction on Saturday – a Timezone video game arcade. Timezone general manager James Woodbridge says he was thrilled to see Nelson families come out and enjoy the new Timezone. “The sheer joy and excitement on the faces of all the kids was plain to see. By providing a safe and exciting entertainment hub for kids, we know Timezone Nelson is going to be a place where families can create longlasting memories together. We’re also pleased to support the local economy by creating 17 new jobs for Nelson locals.” Siblings Jareth, 8, and Aleigha Wright, 9, set about enjoying as many of the games as possible with mum Miranda saying that she had surprised the pair for the school holidays. “We didn’t tell them it was opening. They really love these sorts of games.” Photo: Charles Anderson.

Council building vandalised Jonty Dine The Nelson City Council had its building tagged last week by rogue members of the activist group Extinction Rebellion. "You Suck, Happy Earth Day" was scrawled across the windows as well as the group's insignia. The main door to the customer service centre had to remain closed while the graffiti was removed. Acting chief executive for Nelson City Council Alec Louverdis says says this was disruptive for staff and customers. “It is always disappointing when Nelson City Council property is vandalised because this incurs a cost that the ratepayer bears and this has an impact on what we can provide for our community.” An Extinction Rebellion's spokesperson says the act was not a group condoned action and many members are upset. "It does not reflect our values in terms of communication or making meaningful change, based on well thought out, and informed actions." They say the intention is not to use language that is reminiscent of the language people often use towards

them. "We do not condone insult as a manner of activism." Tensions have been high due to a recent clash with Nelson City councillor Tim Skinner during a protest. "There have been some nasty and at times threatening public commentary directed towards the group. "Almost the entirety of the XR membership was as surprised as anyone else to see the message painted up today. I feel nauseated with embarrassment." Councilor Matt Lawrey says it's disappointing to see. "I don’t think it’s going to help their cause. It’s sad too because I think overall Extinction Rebellion has done a good job of highlighting the need for us to go further and faster when it comes to saving the planet." Council staff will be reviewing available security footage.

Building homes for helicopters Erin Bradnock

Unsurprisingly 2020 wasn’t the easiest year for the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust to raise funds for their lifesaving service, so they’ve had to get creative. The trust has teamed up with Mike Greer Homes Nelson branch to

build and sell a home with all the profits going to the lifesaving rescue helicopter team. Each year the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter responds to more than 500 missions throughout the Nelson, Tasman, Marlborough and Buller regions, but these lifesaving missions come at a cost.

‘Queen’ Olive’s big birthday bash Erin Bradnock

Olive Buckingham in her Stoke home, surrounded by birthday flowers and holding her tiara from her Queen Elizabeth impersonation days. Photo: Erin Bradnock. Olive says it the work of people like Stoke Seniors Club that are keeping some of her peers alive. “It’s a second home and it's really appreciated by the lonely. I’m one of the oldest here now and they’ve been a blessing to us all,” she says. When she leaves for the day, she gifts the team a box of Cadbury Roses and a hug goodbye, again passing on her gratitude to the team. Olive has lived in Nelson for 60 years and even had a short stint impersonating Queen Elizabeth, or as she puts it "representing the Queen". The first time was at a primary school event about 20 years ago. She says the kids there were convinced she was the real deal and she’s held on to

the tiara ever since. “I’ll always remember one little boy holding onto my leg and saying, ‘I will always protect you'. It was very sweet,” she says. The other occasion was at an Isel Park gardens reopening about 10 years ago. The look was completed with a corgi at her side. For the past decade, Olive says she gets a call from Wellington at the start of each year "checking up" on her. "They ask me how I'm getting on, but really they just want to check I'm still alive," she jokes. "I don't know of anyone else born on the same day as the Queen." Olive’s Queen connection

doesn’t just end with her birthday. During Queen Elizabeth’s New Zealand tour in 1954, she had a close encounter with the woman she admired so much. “My husband was working as security for her visit to Nelson so I was in the same room with her, we were so close to her. She probably wondered who I was.” She says she wanted to say something to her about them both being the same age to the day but felt too shy. “I’ll always regret that,” she says. In her 95th year, Olive plans to keep busy with her work with the RSA. “It’s the most important work of my life,” she says.

Olive “Lu” Buckingham was born 95 years ago, on the same day as Queen Elizabeth II, but it’s not just the date that aligns the pair. Some find it hard to believe that Olive could be born the same day as the Queen as well as having the regal last name of Buckingham. Olive was born Olive Scott, Buckingham being the surname of her first husband and first love, Edward Albert Buckingham. “I met Edward Albert at 16. It was love at first sight,” she says. When her husband sadly passed years later, she compared those years of grief with what the Queen would be facing now with the recent loss of her husband Prince Philip. “I can sympathise with the Queen, I was a long time widowed. It takes time but you do come right. I feel she won’t be enjoying her birthday like I am today,” she says. Olive celebrated her 95th birthday last Wednesday, surrounded by friends at the Pūtangitangi Greenmeadows Centre in Stoke. The Stoke Seniors Club put on a celebration for the day, bringing out a slice of chocolate cake with a candle while the room sang happy birthday.

Stumbling and ‘smouldering’ What was your dance experience before D4AC? Nick: None, except bad moves at the occasional family function or party.

With Dancing for A Cause coming up this Saturday, we have been catching up with the contestants who are ready to strut their stuff for Nelson Tasman Hospice. This week is Nick Smith and Grant Rosewarne.

Why did you want to sign up for it? Nick: Hospice is an unbelievably good cause and I have personally experienced the wonderful care they have given to dying friends and family. How have you found the experience so far? Nick: Difficult. I am starting to get my feet in the right place, but my arms, body, and head are all over the place resulting in regular tellings off by Emma. Biggest challenge? Nick: My first dance partner, Selina got pregnant (to be clear, by her husband) and I have a new partner Zara. They have both been great, but I have had to adapt to their different styles. What have you enjoyed most about it? Nick: I enjoy music and exercise and I am hoping being able to dance better will get me brownie points with my wife.

Nick Smith says he is finally starting to get his feet in the right with dance partner Zara Fowler. Photo: Charles Anderson. Who do you think is your biggest competition? Nick: The ones to watch are Sarah Board who is a natural, Grant Rosewarne who is as smooth as and Phill Jones who is an international athlete and is all muscle. What things have you been doing to fundraise for hospice? Nick: I have been taking a bucket to public events and will be doing a practice show at a National Party function with National leader Judith Collins at Isel

House. I am worried when she sees me dance, she will never let me be spokesperson for arts or culture! Do you like your song? Nick: I love Elton John and his song ‘Your Song, - Linley and I had it at our wedding and it is a favourite. What are you most nervous about? Nick: Doing a Rodney Hide and dropping his dance partner Krystal Stuart on Dancing with the Stars!

What was your dance experience before D4AC? Grant: I've never been a structured dancer, but in my own mind I've thought of myself as having a sense of rhythm and I assumed this made me a reasonable freelance dancer. And, in fairness, in my youth I did receive a few compliments from a number of girlfriend dance partners at the school social, typically, ‘Grant, you’re a really cool dancer!’ and once ‘Hun, you’ve got moves!’ Given our local high school band was Cold Chisel, this might have helped with the positive vibe! The fact that I remember these reassurances like they were only yesterday says I needed external validation for my dancing confidence! However, with the arrival of children, I lost my thinly veiled bravado. Here, my two daughters, Jasmine and Bianca enter our conversation, or the dance floor, from stage left! Both my girls have a range of moves to which, I quite frankly, do not aspire – especially Bianca! Suddenly the reassuring girlfriend compliments were replaced with daughter castigations of, ‘OMG what the hell are you doing with your hips’, and ‘for God’s sake stop that, stop that!’ and, ‘You are the most embarrassing Dad dancer of all time!’ Now former New Zealand ballroom dancing champion Hazel Adcock , enters

for good cause the dance floor and starts to train me at about the time my beautiful wife Julie gets locked out of New Zealand for over 4 months due to Covid. Suddenly women want to dance with me again and I’m owning it! And, with the notable exception of a disastrous overly assertive, dominant dance move in the Kismet cocktail bar mezzanine floor, things have gone well!

Why did you want to sign up for it? Grant: At first, I didn’t! When I attended the first dance three years ago I said to myself, ‘if ever there is an event I will never participate in it's this one!’ Because it takes up so much time and is so far outside of my comfort zone!! About a year later Sally rang me and invited me to participate and I must have laughed for 30 seconds! But Sally wouldn't take ‘no’ for an answer. I started to think that I needed to put myself out there a bit more and hospice is, of course, a great cause! That made the difference! We at NZ King Salmon are committed to making a positive contribution to the Top of the South and I thought participating in this event would be the ultimate positive role model to my team. How have you found the experience so far? Grant: I’m a bit more flexible

than I was, my dance card is always full, I feel good about helping Hospice and I’ve met a lot of great people – especially the talented Hazel Adcock!! I’d call that a positive experience! Biggest challenge? Grant: To those unfamiliar with the Tango, you might not be aware that as part of the dance I have to perfect my ‘smouldering look’. I thought I’d be a natural at this, but I found out otherwise! Feedback was not flattering! My wife Julie has been away so a few people about town have been helping me out giving me tips! So, if you have witnessed some intense eye contact moments in Harry’s Bar followed by a dominant swagger, I can assure you they were all innocent! What have you enjoyed most about it? Grant: The difference between commercial and charity work! Working for charity has been so refreshing because everyone is on your side!! In the commercial world, it can be a tough ‘dog eat dog’ environment with motives questioned and conspiracy theories abounding. Who do you think is your biggest competition? Grant: The compass! I found out something very strange about myself. I work out all my angles in the Tango from a compass

in my head. At all my practices I’ve started facing the West and every angle is derived from the West. Then I had an exhibition dance and Hazel set up in the East. I tried my best, but I was lost! Now I’ve found out I’m starting to face North in the competition, so I’ve re-learned everything! If I have to start from the South I’m screwed! What things have you been doing to fundraise for hospice? Grant: My team ran a fantastic quiz night and many of my friends and business donated very generous prizes. Also, I have kept all my email addresses for the last 20 years and I sent out a mass email to all of them asking for support. Many of them bounced back but then I received emails and financial support from all the places I have worked: Nelson, Adelaide, Sydney, London, Amsterdam, and Utrecht. A few were a little incredulous, ‘What, you’re in New Zealand??? You haven’t contacted me in 15 years!!! You’re running a salmon company – what the hell??? Doesn’t the Government pay for hospice?? Anyway, I’ve deposited $50 for charity and the special happy birthday song you wrote for me!’ Do you like your song? Grant: I have a sexy song and music – movie fans will recognise it! I was lucky in

Vanguard St, the carpark exit should be onto Gloucester St only. Dez Tinee

Your Voice Maitai Valley housing project: How can 500 houses ‘not change the visual character of the Kaka Valley’? Of course they will - not to mention the associated infrastructure and the extra vehicles going up and down Nile St every day. The developer’s spokesman promises an ‘ecologically-enhanced esplanade reserve and 2km of stream restoration.’ There is nothing to stop the developers undertaking such environmental projects - they could have done some of them already, if this was their focus. But of course it isn’t. They are not proposing this development out of the goodness of their hearts or concern for the environment, but solely for personal profit. Chrissie Ward

It is time the police sat near that roundabout for a week or so. Every day my son has near misses with idiots who either pull out on him or don't know how to indicate. I’m sick of cars parking up the street all day too because there is nowhere else for them to park while at work. It is time this had a big shake up, council and police. Tania Johnstone Vanguard St is an absolute shocker - it is where my accident happened. We used to hear so many when I was working down there, I’m so glad we don't work there now. Tracey Horan I've had a house on Vanguard St for the last six years and I totally agree. I have had so many near-misses pulling out of my driveway. Add to that the shared pathway

Concern over Vanguard St ‘blackspot’: I think there should be no ‘outward’ traffic onto

Nelson can only be a loser from Labour’s radical centralization of healthcare and the scrapping of our Nelson/Marlborough District Health Board. It will mean Nelsonians having to travel more often to Christchurch or further to get access to specialist health services. It will make it harder for Nelson to attract and keep top medical professionals. It will mean the loss of local jobs.

It will reduce accountability and innovation in our local health services. Nelson has had control over its health services since the first hospital was built on Waimea Road in 1869. It’s been called a Hospital Board and then a Health Board, had changes in the mix of elected and appointed members and expanded in area, but it has always been governed by local people and a local Chief

Opinion editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz facebook.com/nelsonweekly www.nelsonweekly.co.nz which I can hardly see who is on it, as my front fence blocks my view. I regularly see and hear minor car crashes outside my house, about once every few months from drivers coming out of the carpark across the road from me. It's amazing it doesn't happen more often. Jackie Duncan I cycled to work for two years and had dozens of near misses along Vanguard St. The scariest experience was when a car right turned towards New World and cut me off in the shared cycle/pathway. I drive to work now but go the opposite way. Rosé Jae Teehu St Vincent St is the same with that stupid lay out of the car parks and cycle path. It's a matter of time. The councils have no idea what they are doing. The main street in Richmond is pathetic too, now so narrow with the new upgrade. Karina Tasker

Executive. The Nelson Marlborough DHB has had a long record of good performance. It did an exemplary job with Covid last year and is leading NZ in vaccination rollout. It has lead innovations with links between primary and secondary care, cardiac care, hospice and mental health. I would back big as better if it worked but it is the biggest DHB’s that have had the most

Nelsonians back airport bus proposal: We are out in Atawhai and last time we were flying out (pre Covid) it cost us $45 one way to the airport. A bus would be great. Denise Wearne Yes, I had to get a taxi from the airport to Richmond and it cost $37 - let's say I was not happy. Christine Ching I commute back to Wellington for work, as do a great deal of people. A reliable airport bus would be a big bonus. Halcione Hoare I've worked right near the airport for over 10 years. The number of people I've seen walking with all their gear down dirty old Quarantine Rd to find the closest bus or whatever is kind of embarrassing to say the least. Having said that, I was equally as surprised to find there was no longer a bus at Wellington Airport either.

troubles. I have been contacted by UK doctors who describe themselves as refugees from their NHS who are horrified that New Zealand is adopting their centralised model. I had to walk down the road to Burger King to get a bus. Luckily, I had plenty of time. Jason L Kemp

I have heard so many people at the airport complaining about the cost of the shuttles. If we want people to come here and spend their money, then we need to provide suitable services for them. I often pass people walking with their suitcases along the cycle track to Monaco. When you talk to them, they won’t pay the shuttle costs. Dianne Scott So glad this is finally on the radar for our region. Melanie Brown

The first thing I learnt about Nelson was we didn’t have a bus that goes to the airport. Ended up walking from town. Absolutely stupid that we don't. Katherine Haisman-Baker

centralisation agenda. Labour loves big bureaucracies and believes Wellington knows best. The Kiwibuild promise of 1000 homes in Nelson/Tasman but with none built shows Wellington cannot deliver. Health care will always be complex and expensive. I am open to genuine improvements and efficiencies but these changes are bad for Nelson. Advert.

Rutherford Cottage gets a makeover at Founders Erin Bradnock

This year marks Ernest Rutherford's 150-year birthday. Rutherford Rotary saw the cottage as the perfect opportunity to celebrate Brightwater born scientist. The cottage is now equipped with purpose-built interactive exhibits, some of which were built by local artist Lee Woodman.

A Rutherford Cottage reopened last Wednesday with a refreshed and interactive installation at Founders Heritage Park. Rutherford Rotary are behind the revamp and rotary member and Nelson City councillor Trudie Brand hopes the update will inspire other community groups to do the same. After lockdown, business and life partners Jackie Aislabie and Nigel Jerard at The Workshop started up wine and paint nights and it's been a hit with locals ever since. Jackie says when painting workshops business Paintvine approached them at their bar, brewery and café on New St it was an easy sell. "They provide the paint, tutor and canvases and we just have to provide our bar and the pizzas," says Jackie. Nigel says the set up works well for business with Jackie manning the bar and Nigel in the kitchen prepping pizzas. "It's great, it exposes The

Workshop to people who wouldn't have heard of us before and we're seeing these people come back," he says. Jackie says they have a few regulars that have been coming along to paint and wine nights for months now and attendees tonight agree it's a unique way to spend a night out. "It's a good way to paint, with one hand with a paintbrush and holding some pizza in the other," says Kerri Stephenson, a first-time attendee. It's also Brian Grant's first night at The Workshop and as a fulltime painter decorator says been great to work with paint creatively again. "It's good to be able to challenge yourself and get artistic," he

says. Painting tutors Claudia BustosLee and Alicia Ambaubn say that it's not only fun to host but rewarding. "It's really nice at the end of the night to see everyone buzzing. So many people come who haven't painted before and everyone ends up so proud of their work and exceeding their expectations," says Claudia. Wine and paint nights have been running fortnightly on Tuesdays but from May 9, Mother's Day, the nights will be running every second Sunday for $49 per person. Fringe show migrates home to Nelson Kate Russell A show inspired by the miracle of the kuaka migration is finally coming home to Nelson. Award-winning local theatre company Birdlife Productions promises laughter, tears, and thrilling adventure with their new show The Boy with Wings, which will be performed on May 8 as part of the Nelson Fringe Festival. “The idea came about during our European tour in 2019,” says Roger Sanders, who created the show with his wife, Bridget. “The whole process of being on the road and deciding which route to take, where to stay, and the things you negotiate to get from A to B in the best possible way got us thinking about migration. “In Europe, we spotted many migrating birds and it made us think of the kuaka (bar-tailed godwit) back home and we thought, ‘people are like that too - we are creatures with migratory instincts’.” Roger says the show has “two halves” with a kuaka’s journey being paralleled in a human character. “We wanted to tell an educational and environmental story that informed children, while at the same time drawing parallels with the miraculous journey that we as

humans travel through life with all its twists and turns.” The show is set to be a visual feast and will delight children and adults alike. Now the time has finally come for them to perform the show in their hometown and there will be two shows on May 8 - one at 11am and the other at 2pm, with tickets just $10 each. “It’s a relief to tell people we are finally doing the show in Nelson,” says Roger. The Boy with Wings is on as part of the Nelson Fridge Festival on Saturday, May 8 with two shows at 11am and 2pm at the Refinery ArtSpace, 114 Hardy St. Tickets are available from www.eventfinda.co.nz

Waimea pip Marist in epic encounter Jonty Dine

Waimea Old Boys first five Campbell Parata says he has been dreaming about a shot at redemption. Last season, the young sharpshooter had a chance to steal a game from rivals Marist with a last minute penalty which he sent sailing just wide of the uprights. On Saturday, he made no such mistake as he kicked the winning points in an epic showdown at Trafalgar Park. The Marist vs Waimea rivalry has seen some breathtaking finishes in recent seasons and Saturday's clash, which yielded 97-points, may just be the most thrilling encounter between the two sides to date. Campbell showed great composure in a high pressure situation to rain on Marist's 75th jubilee celebration and claim the 49-48 victory. "Such a different feeling to last year, same situation with the kick to win it, but just so glad it went over this time." Campbell says it was an exhausting 80 minutes in a see-sawing battle. "We knew it would take an 80 minute performance. The past three

years it has come down to the wire and it did again." Both sides produced some spectacular tries in perfect conditions and it didn't take long for the action to get underway. Fresh off his stint with the Crusaders U20s, Macca Springer burst through a hole and set up Caleb Coventry to score the first try. Erenimo Tau made it two after just 12 minutes as the powerful midfielder went through some weak defence to score under the sticks. Down 17-0 , Marist needed a spark and it appeared to come from Cleve Barrell who did brilliantly to get over the line only to spill the ball as he went to put it down. The hosts did get on the board moments later through Rahiri Witehera before Niko Barton closed the gap to just three points as the fleet-footed fullback danced his way through the Waimea line. The game's speed did not waver and Witehera scored his second to draw the sides level before Briggs put Marist ahead for the first time, 19-17. Marist’s comeback continued with 26 unanswered points courtesy of

Lote Saulekaleka’s bonus point try. After just thirty minutes, six stunning tries had been scored. A seventh shortly followed when Barrell made up for his earlier blemish, managing to find a blade of white grass from the base of a ruck. On his Tasman Trophy debut, Springer scored his first try, showing he has power as well as pace to see his side trailing 31-22 after an unbelievable first half. It took less than a minute for the scoring to continue in the second, Witihera getting his hat-trick to extend Marist’s lead to 18. Waimea responded with three tries in quick succession with David Paulo bagging two and a second for Springer as the margin was reduced to just one. Sam Briggs added a penalty for Marist, but Waimea would finally reclaim the lead after Michael Stringer hit a brilliant line off his halfback to score right by the posts. Relentless pressure by Marist ended with Kasi Sami appearing to score the match winner in the 77th minute to take the score to 48-46. Typical of this match though, the

Kasi Sami scoring what looked to be the match-winning try. Photo: Evan Barnes/Shuttersport. drama was not over and Marist was penalised with time up on the clock. The crowd collectively held its breath as Parata nailed his opportunity to draw a close to an unbelievable game of rugby. Campbell says he is looking forward to an inevitable rematch later this year. "I'm sure we will meet again and hopefully it doesn't come down to a kick."

Prices will attempt to secure a three peat after securing the titles in 2018 and ’19. The side will be without inspirational captain Dayna Whiting, who will sit out the season as she prepares for the birth of her first child, but will once again 8/04/21have 2:34 the PM services of star shooter Shar Lowe. Kalyssa Rasmussen shapes as a key figure following her recent shift from Stoke while Holly Chandler has consistently been a standout on defence. Former Tactix star Zoe Walker will also return to the region after an injury plagued run while Lucy Ingham will be a handful on attack. Prices biggest rivals will of course be Jacks, beaten finalists in both 2019 and ’18. Dual superstar Jess Drummond will again be integral to Jacks' sucess as the side will be desperate to break their title drought after consecutive heart-breaking losses. Jordan Webby’s performance in the

2019 final was indicative of her value to Jacks, her intercepts crucial to stifling the opposition attack while college star Chloe Webb will be one to keep an eye on. Richmond boasts a strong looking squad with the acquisition of Bayley Templeton from Jacks and Natalie Fullman from Prices as well as national touch rep Courtney Lott while veteran Kat Jones brings plenty of experience to the circle. Stoke's Megan Thomson will be hoping to continue her strong shooting form on the back of slick service from Amber Healey and Sarah Fitsimanu. Kimberly Curry leads an inexperienced Nelson College for Girls side. Also, new to the Nelson Netball scene this season is Leigh Gibbs, who has taken the reins as Centre Manager. Leigh brings a wealth of experience to her new role as gold medalist and world champion. She

has served as assistant coach for the Silver Ferns when the team won a gold medal at both the Commonwealth Games and the World Championships in 2003 and 2006 and a silver medal at the same two competitions in 2002 and 2007. She is a former Silver Ferns captain and vice-captain and won the World Championships as a player in 1979 and 1987 and coached the Mainland Tactix from 2012-2014. Leigh is delighted at an increase in player numbers with seven extra sides entered into competition in 2021. “I am really encouraged, we are hoping the competition is going to be a really enjoyable one and a really positive experience for everyone involved whether they are players, coaches, umpires or officials.” Leigh says she will observe a full season before making any changes in her new role. “I have got some ideas, but I

Kimberly paving her way

Ogden powers home in Loop the Lake

Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Growing up with nine siblings, Kimberly Curry quickly learnt how to stand out. “It was so much fun most of the times, but it also made me really strong, there were lots of fights over food,” Kimberly jokes. She comes from quality sporting stocks, brother Mike playing rugby professionally in Japan and sister Michelle having played for the Samoan rugby side in 2020. “She’s hard to compete with.” The 17-year-old has gone a long way to matching her siblings’ feats, recently being awarded a prestigious Tania Dalton scholarship. On the advice of Nelson College for Girls sports director Jon Routhan, Kimberly applied, not thinking that she stood much of a chance. Kimberly was one of just 12 young female athletes around the country that were selected. “I ran straight to my parents and we started jumping around for a few minutes.” The Tania Dalton foundation annually awards scholarships to make a meaningful difference to young New Zealanders. The funds will allow Kimberly to pursue her dreams of playing professionally. As well as financial assistance,

Kimberly had an impressive netball debut in year four, after playing junior hockey and football. Her side would win 25-0 with Kimberly scoring 23 of the goals from goal attack, seemingly setting her position in stone. However, a fateful injury during

the start of her high school career, saw her made the permanent switch to defence. “I was on the sideline and they just chucked me in there and I’ve stayed ever since.” She quickly grew accustomed to her new role. “I enjoy getting the intercepts and feel less pressure, and it’s more of a following game as opposed to what I need to do to get free.”

The Nelson Netball season gets underway next Thursday evening at Saxton Stadium. One of just two year 13s in a young side, Kimberly says her final year with Nelson College for Girls will be a rebuilding period. Kimberly dreams aren’t confined to the netball court. “I have always wanted to be a pediatrician so I will study medicine at Otago University.”

Mark Matt Ogden’s name down as a perennial podium finisher in any future trail run he enters judging by his performance in the 27thAlpine Lodge Loop the Lake. His slick 1.41.59 for the 25km circuit of Lake Rotoiti was a class act as he outgunned his fellow 258 finishers. Josie Wilcox, when a Nelson junior, was heading towards a top athlete, especially when she won the 2009 Dun Run. Since then, a few years have passed plus plenty of mountainbike event victories. Home for the weekend from her Palmerston North base she showed she can still lace up a fast pair of running shoes to register 1.59.29 and join an elite bunch of women who have eclipsed 2 hours. Wakefield’s Jodie Dobson toiled hard for another second placing while Kirsten Hall (Christchurch) discovered that wet feet are not ideal plus tamer off territory is more to her liking, but coming home third is no disappointment. One record was broken with Auckland’s Maggie Peat erasing Yvonne West’s longstanding 2013 time in the 60+ section.

Giants fall in season opener Jonty Dine

The Nelson Giants had an unhappy homecoming to the Hangar on Monday. In the team’s first outing at the Trafalgar Centre since 2019, the Giants were well beaten by a ruthless Southland Sharks side 84-65. Shooting stats didn’t make for pretty reading for the Giants who shot just 20 per cent from outside the arc. Coach Mike Fitchett lamented the poor percentage. “We got a few good looks, but we just couldn’t put the ball in the hoop.” Mike says it was a disappointing way to start the season. “The defensive effort and intensity wasn’t there.” He was able to find some positives from the first up loss, including the debut of US college star Donte Anzac Risetto made his Giants debut at the Trafalgar Centre this afternoon. Football star takes mental health journey Jonty Dine

Your electricity discount is on its way Network Tasman is pleased to announce that its consumers will receive a discount credit on their next power bill.

$6.7m of discounts to be provided to consumers Network Tasman will credit a total of $6.7m to consumers’ next power bills. Consumer ownership and a focus on cost efficiency has enabled Network Tasman to credit $205 million of discounts back to consumers in the region since the discount scheme’s inception in 1994. Network Tasman will credit $13.5m in discounts back to consumers in 2020/21: $6.8m was credited to consumers in July 2020 - including a one-off $1.1m COVID discount payment - and $6.7m will be credited in the coming weeks.

Having travelled the world playing football, Cory Vickers understands the mental stresses that come with being a professional sportsman. Cory also understands that support is often not available or encouraged in the cut-throat world of professional sport. So, he and partner Brittany Adams are embarking on a journey to try and change that. The pair will walk the length of the country later this year on the 3000km Te Araroa stretching from Cape Reinga to Bluff. “Mental health has always been a bit close to home for me and seeing first-hand what the sporting culture can be like and the struggles that come with that, being away from home, family friends, stepping into new communities can always be tough.” The 28-year-old former Tasman United player says boys struggle to let their emotions out at the

Brittney’s passion for mental health awareness comes from her work where she has seen families break down due to a

lack of help. “There is a lot of need but just not enough funds out there.” She says many don’t know how to open up in the right way, where to go or what to do if someone asks for help. A fundraising page, ‘Two is One & One is None (A Problem Shared is a Problem Halved),’ has been created to spread awareness of their campaign. They will seek refuge in and try to connect with the communities they pass through. “It’s exciting, it’s a challenge, but we want people to understand what’s required to walk 3000km.” Their goal is to fundraise a minimum of $8000 to support mental health in sport. They are calling on the public to help with gear and food for their trip as well as funds.
