Concern over empty flats Jonty Dine With so many people struggling to find a permanent roof over their heads, Alisoun Frost is dismayed that a pair of flats in
her complex have sat empty for six months. The 77-year-old resident of Russell Flats on Waimea Rd has raised concerns with a number of agencies about the flats, which
she says have been empty for months. “We are all just wondering why no one had been put in there yet.” The flats were sold by Nelson City Council to Kāinga Ora in 2019.
Alisoun says she has lived at the complex for 25 years and has never seen any of the flats empty for this long. “It is not good enough when people are so desperate for
housing.” Alisoun says a friend of hers recently had to leave Nelson due to the housing crisis.

Students weigh in on uniforms Mia Peacey and Lucy Daughtrey There are a lot of schools around Nelson - some have uniforms, but some do not. But which is better? Uniforms have been a debate for years and been the subject of many speeches. So, with so many opinions floating around we tried to get to the bottom of this issue. There will always be a group of people who do not like the fact they have a uniform and don’t want one, or vice versa. We are students from Clifton Terrace School and Hampden
Street School – Mia is from Hampden St School and Lucy is from Clifton Terrace. One of us wears a uniform and the other doesn’t.

“She had to move to Motueka because she couldn’t find a flat to rent in Nelson, all her friends and ties are here though," she says. "A friend of mine asked and was told they aren’t ready yet, but they have had six months to get them ready." According to statistics from WINZ, Kāinga Ora currently has 253 people waiting for accommodation in Nelson. “This complex is not the only one with empty flats, I would like to see them filled when there are so many people struggling,”

Alisoun says. Across the country, the latest figures just released for the month of February show there are 23,259 people waiting for public housing. On average, people wait 183 days to be housed. Kāinga Ora regional director Julia Campbell says the homes require some maintenance work before they can be rented to customers. “This work has already been assessed and is due to begin soon.” Julia says they are in the process of matching and offering them to customers and that they can move in once the work is completed.

We decided to go deeper into the subject as both of us have different opinions about whether or not to have a uniform. Lucy says: “Personally, I like uniforms, they are fine. But a less thick fabric would be better.” Mia says: "I love the way we have no uniform because you can wear absolutely anything you want.” Some things that aren’t good about uniforms are that sometimes they are really thick and annoying when it gets hot and if you get all of your uniforms dirty and you get in trouble with the teacher. Nine-year-old Lily Rolston of Clifton Terrace School says: “I don’t mind our uniform but sometimes it is too colourful. I wish we had a less bright uniform.” Nine-year-old Millie Oram of Hampden
Street School says: “I would love a uniform because you don’t have to worry about what to wear in the morning.” The girls say there are a few good things about having a uniform. For example, you don’t have to choose what to wear in the morning and everyone has the same thing on so no one gets bullied about their clothes. Principal of Clifton Terrace School, Rob Weymss, says: “We have a uniform because it is easier for the parents cost wise and kids don't have to worry about what clothes to wear.” So, what do you think, uniform or no uniform? Warning over fake NZ Post email
3
Kate Russell Reporter
kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz
A Nelson man is urging email users to be vigilant after he received one from a scammer purporting to be NZ Post. Andy Underwood received the email on May 18, asking him to click on a link to ‘schedule a new delivery’ on his parcel. He then got a second email a few days later, requesting he do the same thing. “It had the proper NZ Post header and looked exactly like something they would send.” Luckily, Andrew cottoned on to the fact that it was a scam when he took a closer look at both senders’ email addresses, which were using a Hotmail domain. “I knew it was bogus nonsense.” Andrew says he considers himself to be computer savvy, having owned a computer since 1980. But he worries that other people could be at risk. “There are lots of people that would fall for this - it’s a very smart one. They are getting more and more sophisticated.” NZ Post told Nelson Weekly that there have been 96 reports of scammers sending emails claiming to be them.
Andy Underwood wants to warn others about a fake NZ Post email doing the rounds. Photo: Kate Russell. “NZ Post is aware that some of our customers have been receiving scam emails. We ask that those affected customers delete these emails immediately,” says a spokesperson. Andrew has also filed a report to Netsafe, New Zealand’s independent, non-profit, online safety organisation. CEO Martin Cocker says they have seen a 68 percent spike in reports related to various versions of this scam in the past year. “Unfortunately, these types of phishing scams are very common and the one using NZ Post is the latest variation used by the scammers. “From what Netsafe has seen, scammers are taking advantage
of the increased likelihood of people waiting on parcel deliveries to make their scam appear more genuine.” He urges people to be extra vigilant to unsolicited emails or giving out personal information such as financial details. Martin also advises people to check that any emails from wellknown organisations use the organisation's email domain. “If it uses a free-to-use platform for personal accounts such as Gmail, Outlook, or Hotmail, this is a big red flag. “If you think it’s a scam then mark the email as junk mail. It’s important that you don’t reply.” For tips on how to stay safe online, go to netsafe.org.nz/ phishing

Port’s science and technology precinct unveiled Charles Anderson A bold new vision of what the city’s proposed science and technology precinct could look like was unveiled on Monday, by the Cawthron Institute’s chief executive. Cawthron chief executive Volker Kuntzsch spoke at the ‘Intelligent Guardians’ event about the journey that the research institute had taken over the last 100 years. The next stage of that was developing a precinct on Port Nelson land near SH6. “We want to bring all our expertise together,” said Volker. He hoped that the development would bring “1000 knowledge workers” into the area. “To really collaborate in a very likeminded environment ... I would hope that within this collaborative atmosphere we will be joined by others in Nelson.” He shared an artist’s impression of what that development could look like. Port Nelson, in collaboration with Cawthron Institute, is investigating the development of the precinct on its land near State Highway 6 with support from Nelson City Council. Due diligence on the proposed precinct site is still ongoing and subject to further commercial
negotiations, but it is hoped a formal announcement could be made by the middle of this year. Volker says, with 70 percent of New Zealand’s aquaculture industry based in Te Tauihu, the precinct could open up exciting new collaborations with other organisations also working to deliver sustainable economic and environmental solutions for the ocean economy. “Cawthron’s collaborative approach to our research has enabled much of our success. Relocating our new laboratories to this site will enable us to continue to realise and advance innovative economic outcomes for Te Tauihu and Aotearoa, alongside restoring and protecting our unique environment.” He says the facilities would act as a springboard for delivering impactful science for the next 100 years. “This significant investment in our region will enable our people to take their research to the next level, which will not only provide benefits locally but also nationally and beyond.” The ‘Intelligent Guardians’ event brought together people who are leading the charge when it comes to applying research, science, and technology to solve some of the greatest challenges of our time.

Inferno destroys local man’s plane Jenny Nicholson The owner of a light aircraft was left utterly heartbroken last week after his 60-year-old plane was completely destroyed by a fire at Malibu Park airfield in Teapot Valley, near Brightwater. Jason Deer, who had owned the Cessna 185 since 2015, says the incident was “devastating”. “I’ve had condolence messages from all over the country this week.” The plane was in the hanger for annual maintenance when it caught fire and was quickly engulfed by flames. Jason was nearby and his first reaction was to push the plane outside to save the hanger and another plane. After calling 111, he joined others trying to put the inferno out, but by the time the fire brigade arrived, all that was left burning was the plane’s tyre. “You can tell it was an airplane once, but it was destroyed beyond rebuilding,” says Jason. Sixty years of aviation history was also lost in the fire as the Cessna ZK-CAK, was the first of its kind brought into New Zealand back in 1961, and the 17th built worldwide. “She just had its 60th birthday last week,” says Jason. “She was my pride and joy. One brief moment in time and she’s all gone.” Her initial use was carrying newspapers and passengers from Nelson to the West Coast. In the early 1980s, CAK was registered as an air ambulance and later

After use for aerial spraying, she passed back into private ownership. Jason has enjoyed many hours flying over mountains and into the back country. He says 185s are a handful, but very satisfying to fly. “She was a grand old lady, the other woman in my life,” he says. “At the beginning of the day last week, there was no way I could ever have imagined what has now happened to her.” Over the years his plane has been the one constant thing in his life that he wouldn’t sell. Jason says he didn’t look at himself as the owner of CAK, but more of a guardian of history. He knows he wants another plane, but there aren’t many for sale that are suited to land on the remote airstrips he uses.

Airport moves into curtains and classrooms: Nelson Airport is diversifying into curtains and classrooms as it meets the Covid challenge head-on. Not only did the region’s airport record better than expected levels of domestic travel and freight movements over the last year, it also developed diversified revenue streams to provide the airport with greater resilience. As a result, the airport is now home to a company manufacturing prefabricated classrooms and another moving their head office and nationwide training facility in the manufacture of curtains and blinds. They now have more than 100 businesses on the airport campus employing over 500 staff. The new tenancies include: Fitzgerald Construction, Russells Curtains, GCH Aviation Nelson, Nelson Aviation College and The New Zealand Aviation Academy.

Nelson College student Charlie Cuff hosts his own radio segment on Fresh FM. Photo: Supplied.
Charlie reaching out across the airwaves Jonty Dine A random message to his favourite station led Nelson College’s Charlie Cuff to hosting his very own radio show. Charlie first started listening to Radio New Zealand as a sixyear-old while he played with Lego. He embarked on his own broadcasting career by first producing gaming videos on YouTube at just 12-years-old. “It’s a bit embarrassing, my voice was very squeaky.” Journalism is in Charlie’s genes with both his parents working in media. One night when listening to his favorite radio station, Charlie decided to write in to host Bryan Crump, asking about the feud between YouTuber’s PewDiePie and T-Series. “I just wanted to know what he
thought, obviously, he hadn’t heard about them though because it was a kid thing.” Instead, Brian invited Charlie onto the show to speak about it. “I was massively nervous and didn’t talk that well, but it was so exciting to hear it on radio later on.” The then 12-year-old was then asked to be a regular voice for Generation Z. “I would just chat to Brian about what’s going on in my life.” Topics ranged from the world of podcasts to a personal computer that Charlie had built himself. “They are now monthly tenminute segments where I explain technology to older generations, most recently I talked about cryptocurrency.” Charlie then looked for his next challenge which saw him knocking on the door of local

3 Covid vaccine Council votes to build Group rollout begins new riverside library Staff Reporter
Kate Russell
A $44m library redevelopment for Nelson has been given the go-ahead. The approval was given at Nelson City Council’s long term plan meeting last week, subject to the completion of a flood mitigation plan and a land exchange agreement with Wakatū Incorporation. The project will see the riverside site on the corner of Halifax and Trafalgar Sts totally transformed - replacing the current Elma Turner Library which has served the city for 30 years. The decision was split into two parts - one to confirm the riverside option, which four councillors voted against (Tim Skinner, Rohan O’Neill-Stevens, Pete Rainey and Rachel Sanson). The other decision included climate change objectives, community consultation, and negotiations of a land exchange with Wakatū Incorporation, with just Tim Skinner voting against this. Gaile Noonan was one councillor who spoke in favour of the project, even though there were 93 submissions to the long term plan that were against it. “The reasons were quite clear - the cost, flood risk, the library is adequate as it is, council should wait until the Climate Change Adaptation Act has
A concept plan of what the library development could look like. Image: Supplied. passed into law ... I think these all have been adequately addressed in the officer's report,” she said. “Something must be done. Libraries actually provide so much more than books.” Cr Tim Skinner spoke against it. “We must have our priorities right. The community is still recovering from the hardship of Covid and maybe for some time yet. “We have children without shoes and going without food. We have pensioners living in cars, we have women and young mums seeking safe refuge and shelter. We have a huge housing shortage,” he said. “The public has spoken very clearly
to me and I’ve listened. We must live within their and our means both in the present and for future generations.” Chief executive Pat Dougherty said “they have all learned the lessons of Greenmeadows” - referencing a council building project in Stoke that was plagued with cost overruns and compliance issues. “It is more money than we’ve ever spent on any one project, and the complexities of it will be huge.” Council will now negotiate with Wakatū Incorporation on a land exchange deal before design work begins, taking flood mitigation and community engagement into consideration.
The free Pfizer vaccine is now being offered to people in ‘Group 3’, as well as Groups 1 and 2. Group 3 members are more likely to get very sick if they catch Covid-19. They are people who are: aged 65 or older, disabled, pregnant (any trimester), have a relevant underlying health condition or live in custodial settings. Underlying health conditions include: serious and chronic respiratory conditions, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic kidney/ renal disease, diabetes, coronary heart conditions, stroke, hypertension and most cancers. If you are in Group 3 you will be contacted over the next few months by a health official, using contact details held by your GP or healthcare provider. If you don’t have a GP you can register your contact details with Healthline on 0800 282 926. Nelson Marlborough Health says you do not
need to do anything other than making sure your contact details are up to date. The large size of Group 3 means that not everyone will be offered the vaccine at the same time. Please be patient – everyone in the region over the age of 16 will be offered a free vaccine. The Nelson Marlborough Health website has up-todate information about the regional vaccine rollout: www.nmdhb.govt.nz/ vaccine The DHB says Nelsonians need to be aware of incorrect information on social media and websites. Disinformation is also circulating in the form of pamphlets; if it's not from Unite Against COVID-19 or the Ministry of Health, it might not be trustworthy. You can get accurate, evidence-based information from the Ministry of Health, Unite Against COVID-19, Immunisation Advisory Centre, Te Puni Kōkiri and Medsafe NZ websites and social media.

Eleena’s long battle to save her horses Jonty Dine Reporter
jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz
After coming home and discovering her partner had ended his life, Eleena Kennedy’s own battle with mental health was far from over while her financial battles had also just begun. Two years on, Eleena may now lose her beloved animals too as she struggles to pay her bills alone. Eleena offers therapeutic horseriding sessions from her Ruby Bay lifestyle block for people suffering physical or mental disabilities. She currently has about a dozen clients who benefit from her service. One young woman who suffers from chronic anxiety and depression could not even look Eleena in the eye on arrival but has gained significant confidence through her work with horses. “It’s my way of helping people like me through my animals. It’s like a self-meditation, letting go of the outside world and connecting with the immediate world around them.” However, if Eleena cannot escape her “financial prison,” she will be forced to part ways with her horses, one of which she has had for 12 years. “I'm still fighting to save my home, property and animals.” After his passing, Eleena discovered she had not been included in her ex-partner’s will. She was also removed as a spouse from the death certificate by his family. This left her unable to sell or
refinance her home which was held in a joint property agreement. Barely a fortnight after his death, Eleena says she had to go back to work and pretend everything was all right, but suffered numerous panic attacks. She has been to a number of agencies for help including Kiwisaver, WINZ and ACC. Eleena was unable to access Kiwisaver as she did not qualify for hardship and was told by both ACC and WINZ that her partner ‘understood the consequences of his actions’ therefore she was not entitled to any help. “It just dropped me.” After being denied twice, Eleena was eventually granted $32 a week by Work and Income. “To pay the gas, print off pay slips, make the appointment and do your grovelling all for $32 per week, I thought ‘what is the point?’” During this battle, Eleena’s mental health deteriorated and she battled dark thoughts. “I had to go to work with a happy face on when I was going through all of this.” Eleena says her job was one of the few things that kept her going. “I am not going to lose my home because I spent six years with someone who couldn’t do right by me.” Eleena says she is speaking out so others can avoid a similar situation. “Ensure if you have another person on the title of your property, even if they came with nothing, that they have your best interest on paper. Words mean nothing when it comes to the
legal side.” To help Eleena save her animals you can donate to her Givealittle here https://givealittle.co.nz/ cause/help-eleena-save-herhome-and-animals It’s ok to ask for help: In an emergency: Phone 111 1737: Free phone or text 1737 to reach a counsellor Healthline: Free phone Healthline to talk to a nurse 0800 611 116 Free helplines available Depression: 0800 111 757 or text 4202 Suicide Crisis Helpline: 0508 828 865 Youthline: 0800 376 633 or text 234

Record numbers of women in NMIT joinery course Erin Bradnock NMIT is at the forefront of helping create a gender shift in a traditionally male-dominated industry. This year, 11 out of 22 students in NMIT’s New Zealand Certificate in Construction Trade Skills (Joinery) are women, compared to one woman in 2020 and the previous record of women enrolled of three in 2019. The women in this year's course agree the Targeted Training and Apprenticeship Fund (TTAF), introduced by the Government in July 2020, is what pushed them to enter the traditionally male-dominated trade. The TTAF covers fees from 1 July 2020 until 31 December 2022 in response to recognised skill shortages and to redirect people who may have lost their job due to Covid-19 into a trade apprenticeship. So far over 100,000 students nationwide have begun TTAF programmes with more than 1100 through coming through NMIT. New student Becky Newcombe says the free fees were a big push factor. “That’s probably the only reason 80 per cent of us are here and able to be here,” she says. Joinery has seen the largest uptake of women enrolling in trades at NMIT. Students Brigitta Thurner and Sara Farnsworth agree it’s the craftsmanship and attention to detail of joinery that appealed to them. “It’s the independence as well, I can create pieces on my own which gives me a sense of satisfaction,” says Sara. Brigitta credits NMIT’s open day to alleviating any doubts she had about taking up the trades course.
NMIT students Sara Farnsworth, Brittany Huckle, Becky Newcombe, Poppy Taggart, Jen Hyde, Brigitta Thurner, Sarah Curtis, Rachel Hudson and Sophie Daubney are among the vanguard of new joiners at the polytech. Photo: Erin Bradnock. “I came along to make sure it wasn’t super ‘blokey’, I wanted to check it was a place I could work in,” says Brigetta. She says talking to tutor Huw Morgan helped her decide to take up the course. Huw has been teaching at NMIT since 2004 and describes the record number of women enrolling in trades courses as ‘amazing’. “It’s fabulous to see all these women here, it’s the diversity of the class that gives it its strength,” says Huw. “There are not nearly enough women in the industry, but this is how it starts,” he says. One student described the course as “super welcoming and inclusive”, but the women agree that a community, shared tool space would help build on their skills. Currently, Nelson has MENSHEDS set up through the region, which is tool share and ‘safe space’ open for men to connect and share skills. Some sheds allow women to use the space but usually at select times and not as members.
One student, who preferred not to be named, said she’s been turned away from a MENSHED and was warned by others not to bother trying with another shed in the Nelson region. “I understand why that space would exist just for men but the guys in my class can go there and there’s no space for women. Not all the MENSHEDS are open every day so there are just tools sitting there, why can’t we use them,” she says. The students agree that they would love to see another space set up, open to anyone. “I would love to see a tool coop we can go to, a space for everyone regardless of gender,” says Sara. According to New Zealand’s Women in Trade Collective's, only 13.5 per cent of all workers in the trades are female. Huw hopes new joiners like this group at NMIT will be the ones to shake up the maledominated industry. “They'll be the managers and company owners of the future, it starts with this group,” he says.

Jason Craig admits he had had a couple of drinks when he came up with a unique way to raise money for a good cause while motivating his staff to get fitter. The idea was to bike 50km a day for the month of May. Originally, he thought 100km a day was a good idea. “I’m glad I didn’t stick with that.” It is the third year the fundraiser has run, with Jason, Karl Williscroft and Jacquie Keay all up the top of the leaderboard for kilometres travelled and money raised. The idea of such a challenge is not foreign to Jason and Karl who were both nationally competitive cyclists back in the day. “Jason was the fastest man on two wheels in New Zealand,” says Karl. “A lot has happened since then,” says Jason. Jacquie says it was a tough ask to fit in all that cycling, but it

Southern Link: Dear Sir, The headline in the 12/5 Nelson Weekly was ‘Southern Link not dead’ - but I think it is dead and ‘won’t like down!’ Yes, Nick Smith keeps ‘flogging this dead horse’, he is out of touch and out of office and should ‘throw in the towel!’ Anton Hyman
Southern Link ‘not dead’: Let’s hope it’s not dead. Yesterday the traffic was backed up to Mitre 10 and that was after nine o’clock. Whose smart idea was it to put traffic lights on Waimea Rd at Bishopdale? I suspect it’s the same lot who don’t want a new road. Our population is growing, and we need some decent solutions to our traffic problems. Christine Gabites Nowhere in the world have congestion prob-
I have three concerns about last week’s Budget. The Government is borrowing $100 billion over the next four years, or $60,000 for every household. This increases New Zealand debt to record levels not seen since the painful economic crisis of the early 1990s when it was 48% of GDP. National got it down through the 1990’s to 20% by 2000. Bill

The Southern Link is just another road going to and from the same problem spot. Thinking it's going to solve everything is pretty wishful. The commonsense idea is to build a road going away from that spot altogether. Rayon Mackenzie I'm beginning to sound like an echo, but I'll keep shouting until I get an answer: will school zoning help reduce traffic volumes in and out of Nelson? Tracy Jane Neal Give it a rest already. The people have spoken, the NZTA have spoken… move along or better yet, get a bike. English rightly borrowed to get New Zealand through the Global Financial Crisis in 2008 and the Christchurch Earthquakes in 2011 and debt peaked at 25% in 2012. He got back into surplus in 2014, and had debt back down to 19% by 2017. Grant Robertson has already increased debt to 33% and this Budget increases it again to 48% of GDP in 2025. It plans deficits

Trust offers ‘trip of a lifetime’ for Nelson students Kate Russell Reporter
kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz
A group of travel enthusiasts are offering Nelson secondary school students the trip of a lifetime. The Celestielle Charitable Trust has established an annual travel scholarship programme, which will see nine year 13 students travel to Southeast Asia in October 2022 for 12 nights. Three winners will be chosen per school - Nelson College, Nayland College, and Nelson College for Girls. The trust is made up of John Ziegler, Doug Easton, Alexandra Isherwood, Lee Nelson, Jenny Solomon, Paul Le Gros, and Saudi billionaire Ibrahim Al-Rashid. John and Doug, who moved to Nelson from the US in early 2020 after being on the road for 10 months a year for the past 14 years, came up with the idea. The “travel designers” own Celestielle, a business that creates personalised travel itineraries for clients all over the world, based on their own experiences.
But now they want to use their experiences to create the ultimate trip for young Nelsonians. “People need to travel, and they need to do it when they are young,” John says. “Travel has had such a major impact on our lives - we both started travelling when we were young and when you are young, your experiences travelling influence your life and the way that you see the world.” Doug says they were initially going to start the scholarship back home in the US. “But we wanted to bring it to the community that we’ve chosen to live in and give back to a country that we are so grateful to be in.” Southeast Asia was chosen as the first destination due to the “doable” air routes and the opportunities it presents. “It ticks all the boxes for food, culture, and language, and history,” says John. “The idea is that the winners will have a say in what they do. Whether they have an interest in architecture, photography, history, or politics - we want to

It’s not a vacation.” The trip will be paid for and planned out by the trust including all transportation, meals, accommodation, guided tours, and excursions. The students will be chaperoned by two teachers from Nayland College. Doug says they are optimistic
that Covid-19 travel restrictions will have eased by the time of the trip. “Realistically, we’re talking about 17 months away. If something does happen, we’ll just have to deal with it.” Principals from Nelson’s three secondary schools say the scholarship is an “amazing opportunity” for their students.
“We all know that travel ‘broadens the mind’ and this looks like the trip of a lifetime for the students selected,” says Nayland College acting principal, Hannah Banks. Acting principal of Nelson College for Girls, Heather McEwen, agrees. “New Zealand is a very small place, and while technology has created more globalisation, travel allows young people to fully immerse themselves in new experiences, cultures, and histories.” Headmaster of Nelson College, Richard Dykes, says they are “excited and highly appreciative” of the initiative. “We’re confident this will create fantastic learning opportunities for our rangatahi that extend beyond Nelson. This can only be to the betterment of our community.” Students need to currently be in year 12 to apply for the scholarship. Applications close on July 4 and winners will be announced in November. There’s never been a better time to sell your home with Pen Rollston
BUILDING INSPECTIONS LTD
After fifteen years selling houses in Nelson and Tasman, Penelope Rollston has built a reputation for achieving strong outcomes for vendors, with most of her listings coming from client referrals and repeat business. Her compassionate approach, and understanding of sellers’ and buyers’ needs, has seen her consistently achieve above market prices for a wide range of properties across the region. Over that time, she has seen house prices double on average about every ten years, with the last year being one of the strongest on record. The year to April saw median house prices across New Zealand grow by 18.7% to a record of $725,000, with the Government implementing measures last month to try and level the playing field for first home buyers. Pen said reviewing sales data for last month would indicate that there has been little impact on either the number of properties selling, or prices being achieved, with Nelson hitting a record median sell price for the third month running. "Given we constantly have people
moving to our region for the weather and lifestyle, we don’t see the spikes in house prices that the rest of the country has seen – instead we get good, steady growth year on year, with prices in Nelson growing by 12.5% over the last year", says Penelope. ‘There is strong demand for quality properties here, and I’m finding that listings are being snapped up really quickly by first home buyers, people looking to downsize their home, and investors still.’ There are about 1,000 houses sold each year in Nelson city, and the median sale price last month was $743,000 (up $97,500 from a year ago). Pen says that with low interest rates, a historically low number of properties on the market, and motivated buyers, the time to sell is now. She concludes by saying "At Tall Poppy we have no upfront marketing costs, as these are included in selling fees. "Call me now for a no-obligation, comprehensive market appraisal on your property. I'm here to help every step of the way!"

Kate Russell Mags Meechang is using the power of her paintbrush to help raise awareness of neurological conditions. The Nelson artist is taking part in the Fifty for 50 challenge for the Neurological Foundation’s 50th anniversary - in which individuals and groups complete a challenge of their choice involving 50 things. This could be reading 50 books, running 50km, or cooking 50 new food dishes. However, Mags decided that creating 50 paintings was more up her alley. “I didn’t really want to do 50 sit-ups every day or run 50km, so I thought I’d do my arty thing.” In fact, she’s enjoyed it so much that she has ended up doing 62 paintings and completed them well ahead of her May 31 deadline. “Once I had a target, I went for it. I’m amazed that I’ve done it so quickly.” Mags has been part of the New Zealand art scene since 1990

Now retired, she says she took on the challenge not only to support the Neurological Foundation but also to inspire herself to discover new avenues in her work. “There wouldn’t be a person who hasn’t been touched by a neurological condition. Family-wise there have been strokes and my granddaughter had a brain tumor. “I’ve always been interested in sports medicine and the injuries that have occurred through sport, including the effects of concussion. My son broke his neck playing rugby.” Her paintings are for sale for
$20 each with all proceeds going to the foundation. Scenes range from tramping memories down south to the places she has visited. Her fiveyear-old great-granddaughter has even contributed two paintings as well. Mags’ paintings will be exhibited at the Nelson Golf Club next month, where people will be able to view and purchase one and learn more about what the Neurological Foundation does. An official opening will be held on June 3 from 4 - 6pm. “I’m hoping it will build up the awareness of the foundation,” says Mags. “It’s been a good thing to do.”

After a stuttering start to its season, American import Hunter Hale has set the Giant’s 2021 campaign alight with two blistering performances in the NZNBL last week. The Michigan man put up some staggering numbers, scoring 37 and 41 points in consecutive outings. Hunter led Nelson to a crucial 91-79 win over the the Canterbury Rams
at the Trafalgar Centre on Thursday evening. He landed 34 points across the first three quarters, before finishing with 37 points, six rebounds and a game-high six steals. Hunter backed this effort up and delivered another masterclass to help the Giants withstand a gritty comeback by the Otago Nuggets. The Giants managed to clinch a thrilling 89-86 overtime win on Saturday night, with Hunter dropping 41 points in a supreme performance. Only eight games into his professional career, Hunter also tops the league’s MVP standings with 44 points, one clear of Bulls’ Josh Selby. Hunter says he is just trying to grow and learn as much as possible. He admits to making a slow start in his first games for the Giants as he acclimated to the different style and rules. “During the first few games I rushed a lot but now I am just learning to be comfortable out there.” Hunter also had to adjust to life in a smaller city. “It’s pretty different, it is much calmer, and I am learning to stay on the left side
of the road when I drive and am getting used to all the roundabouts.” With basketball in limbo across the United States in 2020, Hunter’s agent connected with the Giants to bring the 191cm, 75kg point guard over to Aotearoa. “As soon as I got the call, I did not hesitate and said yes straight away. I didn’t want to pass up the opportunity.” Hunter stayed fit by working out in a local high school gym and shooting hoops up to three times a day. “I stayed ready, I didn’t cheat the grind.” Hunter learnt to work hard when he took up basketball at just three-yearsold. Not even torrential snow would stop young Hunter playing out the front of his Michigan home. “It has always been my family’s tradition, it runs deep in our roots.” Hunter says while he would love to join the Summer League upon his return home, he is focussed on bringing a title to Nelson. “I am just looking forward to the rest of the season. I believe the team can make it to the final four, when we play the right way, we can be unbeatable.”

Nestled in the heart of Victory lies home to one of the region’s most historic cricket clubs. Initially comprised of local church members, the Wakatu cricket club has produced some of the greatest players in the region’s history. From flying cricket balls smashing into passing cars, to drunks stumbling from the local bar through the field to critique players, Wakatu has plenty of stories to share from its century in existence. The club was born in 1921 when Nelson Methodist Minister Henry Blamires, a former first-class player, drew from his congregation and entered the second grade. The side rapidly progressed to premier ranking and has remained there since, without the need to amalgamate. In addition to the premiers it has, with isolated exceptions, fielded second grade sides each year, one of which was until recently principally a women’s side. The club has always been prominent in fielding primary and in-

Double centurions include John Guy with two, S Stewart and Richard Harden. Ted Potts with seven and Rex Challies with four achieved ten wicket bags. Bevan Congdon, Jock Edwards, John Guy, Andrew Jones and Barry Hampton (12th man) played for New Zealand out of Wakatu in the 1950’s, 1960’s, 1970’s, 1980’s and 1990’s. Other internationals who played for Wakatu before or after their international careers were Bill Bell in 1953; Norm Gallichan 1940’s and 1950’s (a NZ player in 1937); Les Townsend in the 1950’s (England in 1930’s); Aftab Habib (England 1990’s) and Peter Truscott (NZ 1960’s). In addition to rubbing shoulders with international players, the club mortals were able to socialise and glean help from Central Districts players Rex Challies (1950’s), Richard Harden (also Somerset

The club is also home to the region’s oldest active cricketer Jock Sutherland, who is still donning the whites for Wakatu at 74 years of age. Jock says much of Wakatu’s success is owed to the du Feu family. Greg first played for the club in 1984 and has continued playing since, sometimes captaining the premier side and is the current president having served since 1997. During much of this time his wife Jo has been the secretary and treasurer and their daughter-inlaw Erin, married to Nathan du Feu, a long-time player and administrator, is the current secretary, and daughter Jessica has assumed the role of treasurer. The clubrooms at Victory Square have been the club hub since the 1950’s and, Jock says, have been home to many a success, failure and celebrations of all sorts, including the marriage there of Ted Potts. Jock says Victory Square has also seen some interesting scenes during the season apart from cricket.

Kicking sugar to touch Jonty Dine
Load control saves you money Load control is a mechanism that Network Tasman and many other lines companies use to manage the demand that heating water places on the electricity network during ‘peak’ demand periods, typically in the morning and early evening on the coldest winter days. Load control allows Network Tasman to shut off devices such as electrical hot water cylinders for a short time during the periods of highest demand. As a result Network Tasman can keep costs down and pass those savings on to our consumers. Cheaper prices for water heating are shown on your electricity bill as a line called ‘controlled’ or ‘economy’. Controlling the load in this way doesn’t impact on the way you use your hot water e.g. to wash your dishes, do laundry or have showers and baths. Our aim is to ensure that you don’t even notice that load control is being used.

A trio of local entities are teaming up to protect the teeth of our youth in sport. Sugary drinks have historically been consumed in mass by players across the country on a Saturday morning. Health promoter for Nelson Marlborough Health, Aaryn Barlow, says children should have no more than three teaspoons of sugar a day. “A can of fizzy is nine teaspoons and a sports drink can be up to 15 so that just shows the scale we are dealing with. Kids are literally bathing their teeth in sugar.” In a bid to reduce this intake, The Tasman Rugby Union, Nelson Marlborough District Health Board and Nelson Orthodontics are working together to promote water as the number one choice for quenching an athlete’s thirst. The ‘tap into water’ initiative runs from junior rugby all the way up to the Tasman Mako. Aaryn says this is just the start of the process to move marketing and sponsorship
messages around protecting teeth and making good dietary choices. “Kids are just as happy drinking water,” says Andrew. The campaign has been likened to the national Smokefree initiative in that it is about slowly changing the public’s way of thinking. Changes are evident at Mako NPC matches where no sugary drinks can be purchased by fans. “This is a step in the right direction if we can get our sporting icons on board.”

Load control helps save consumers money because Network Tasman doesn’t have to invest so much money upgrading the capacity of its local network to cope with ever-increasing peaks during network busy hours. “As an example,” says Network Tasman’s Regulatory and Commercial Manager, Daniel Vincent, “in the coming years we will need to build a new grid exit point in Brightwater. If we didn’t have load control, we would have needed to make this $28 million investment years earlier and customers would already be paying for that investment in their power bill. “Deferring investment keeps our network at a level that is in line with what the community actually needs and, in turn, keeps electricity prices down. It also means we can take advantage of developing technology and innovation as alternatives to traditional network supply become available. “Management of peak load through hot water load control by Network Tasman saves the company and its customers a significant amount of money every year.”

Kahurangi go top, Nelson survives St Bedes scare Jonty Dine Reporter
jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Kahurangi are the outright leaders of the Tasman Trophy after beating Waimea Old Boys in a thrilling top-of-the-table clash in Riwaka on Saturday. In a match that saw several lead changes, Kahurangi prevailed 35-34 to claim its sixth straight victory of the season. Both sides were unbeaten heading into the round seven clash and the meeting more than lived up to the hype. Meanwhile, Wanderers' dominant 46-14 win over Nelson at Trafalgar Park had to be called off early due to a major injury. Fletcher Matthews knows all too well the perils of injury and the Wanderer's captain sympathised with Nelson prop Christian Tupuola who lay prone on the deck at the end of the match. "I have had plenty in my time and it's never nice to end a game early, especially when someone is down like that." The fullback says, after a slow start to the season, his side is finally beginning to gel. "We have been up and down with a couple of draws and losses, but
we have talked about that it just takes one game before it clicks." Sitting toward the bottom half of the table, Wanderers will need four wins from four to make the play-offs. "Today was a good start, we have still got a chance and we are going to give it a good crack." Flanker Chris Halaufia was superb for Wanderers, bagging a double while El-niño Peniamina was destructive with ball in hand. At Greenmeadows, Stoke held off Central for a 29-26 win while in Blenheim Renwick defeated Waitohi 27-5. This weekend will see another blockbuster between Kahurangi and Marist fresh off the bye. Meanwhile, only a slightly astray conversion attempt has kept Nelson College’s winning run in the Crusaders Championship alive. The visiting St Bedes side scored a try with time up on the clock to give themselves a chance to salvage a draw in Nelson on Saturday. However, Mason Allison’s admirable attempt went across the face of the uprights as Nelson survived with a scrappy 14-12 victory. A bloodied Ollie Inch says his

game with a number of errors. “We put ourselves under a lot of pressure and just didn’t build those phases.” Nelson welcomed back its most powerful weapon from injury in the form of Fijian flanker Netani Baleisomosomo. It was a mixed return for Netani, who scored a double but was also sent to the bin for a no-arms tackle. His two tries saw Nelson taking a 14-0 lead at halftime before St Bedes staged its comeback. The visitors slowly worked their way into the contest and finally cracked the Nelson defence in the 55th minute through flanker Tanner Stowers-Smith. Mason Allison’s sharp conversion brought his side within seven. Starved of possession and camped on its own line, Nelson conceded another penalty with time up on the clock. St Bedes opted to tap quickly, and winger Cameron Rawlings found himself in space on the left flank to dive in the corner. The crowd collectively held its breath as Allison struck the ball sweetly, but his effort was ultimately flagged away to the relief of an exhausted Nelson side.

Dominik Berghamer With the recent cold weather the snapper have finally left the bay and taken off towards the deeper waters around d’Urville Island. Over the next months, target species in the shallower areas will be gurnard over the sand and tarakihi and blue cod over foul ground. Blue cod are amongst the most expensive fish to buy and the favourite eating fish for many New Zealanders. Rawaru – their name in te reo - are endemic to NZ and most commonly found from the southern tip of the North Islands southwards. They will try to eat anything that looks even remotely edible and are therefore very easy to catch. Together with the fact that they grow quite slowly this has led to a depletion of stocks in many areas and, in turn, to heavy restrictions when it comes to catching them. Currently you are allowed to keep 2 fish over 33cm per day in Tasman Bay. If you fish in the sounds be aware that there is a ban during the spawning season in spring. Speaking of spawning: Blue Cod can change their sex, and most females will become males at a certain point of their life - so most bigger fish will be boys! In rocky areas they are usually abundant, the higher the fishing

The match saw Jordan Yong returning from injury while Suburbs Academy products Noah Platt and Sam Shelling were promoted. This weekend Suburbs head south to take on Nomads. In local division one action, Motueka still sits top of the points table after holding FC Nelson Phil with a large Fjordland blue cod. pressure the less legal sized fish will be amongst them. Fancy gear is unnecessary but to target the larger ones and to avoid catching and injuring a lot of small fish, use large circle hooks or artificial lures. Unbaited microjigs are my personal favourite, they seem to attract bigger cod and I don’t have to worry about smaller fish stealing my bait. Softbaits are less suited, blue cod tend to tear them to shreds very quickly. Tight lines!

Locomotive to a 2-all draw at Guppy Park on Saturday. The FC 1st XI was also made to work hard for a 4-2 win over Golden Bay. Coach Paul Brydon says the men from Golden Bay kept them honest. “It is a good league this year with the extra teams.” Arguably the biggest upset of the round came at Jubilee Park as Richmond picked up a 2-0 win over the defending champion Rangers. Suburbs completed the round with a 5-1 rout of Tahuna. In Nelson Netball action, Richmond F45 backed up its upset win over Jacks OPD last week with a thrilling one-goal win over Stoke NBS at Saxton Stadium on Thursday.
The new combinations for Richmond appear to be gelling nicely with the side showing great composure to edge Stoke 34-33. After suffering a heavy defeat at the hands of Prices Waimea Ahurei in the opening round, Richmond has rebounded with two crucial wins to sit just one point behind powerhouses Jacks. Meanwhile, Jacks bounced back from last week's loss with a resounding 53-23 victory over Nelson College for Girls. The defending champions also picked up an easy win, cruising to a 64-30 rout of its feeder side, Prices Pango. The undefeated Prices Ahurei sit alone on top of the table on 12 points with an 81-goal differential.
