Precious book mistakenly donated

Kate Russell

When Sheila Pollitt realised that her husband accidentally donated their most precious book to the Founders Book Fair, she knew it would be like finding a needle in a haystack. The book is precious because it features their son Nigel, who passed away from Covid-19 in Australia last year at age 61. Now Sheila, and her husband Jim, are on a mission to get it back - the

problem is they can’t recall the name of the book or the author. The book is about the tall ship, or schooner, Sofia that sank on February 23, 1982, off the North Island of New Zealand, between Cape Reinga and North Cape. Nigel, a keen sailor, was one of the 17 crew members on board. “He loved the sea,” says Sheila. “He is mentioned in the book and there are photos of him. That was the precious part.

“Jim accidentally put the book in the donation box, which we took to Founders for the book fair. A week later we realised it was missing.” Sheila says it was difficult losing their son during the Covid-19 lockdown. “Nigel passed away on the very first day of lockdown. We couldn’t go over to Australia or do anything. It made it so much harder.” Sheila says they have tried looking

Two early childhood education centres in Nelson have closed their doors just months after their operating licences were suspended by the Ministry of Education. ACE Titoki and ACE Nayland – both owned by the same company – closed their doors in March and May respectively, giving parents just two weeks’ notice to find another facility for their children before doing so. It came after the ministry first suspended, then downgraded the licences held by the centres in December last year. Both centres had their licences suspended for a week from December 14 last year for not meeting the minimum standards for curriculum, management and administration, health and safety, premises and facilities and for ill-treating children. They then had their licences downgraded to provisional for not meeting the minimum

standards for management and administration from December 22. Nationally, 43 centres were handed a suspension last year, with 218 downgraded to a provisional licence. Co-owner Tim Powell says the closure was due to many factors – including personal issues – and came on the back of a tough year. “We had a huge reputation, brilliant pre schools that worked really, really well. We had a wonderful time and it’s been an amazing experience. But the last year was very difficult for us and for many businesses in this community.” He says they had a “great team” and met lot of “really cool kids and cool families”. “We’re not a big corporate, just a family business and we’ve operated proudly that way for almost ten years.” The site at Nayland Rd won’t be empty for long though with a new centre, Little Red Fox, taking over the lease and preparing to open in the coming months.

Book fair coordinator, Karen Clark, says books are “accidentally donated” at least two or three times a year. However, because they receive thousands of books, it can be a tricky task to locate them. “Once a book is packed it’s in ‘deep storage,’ but we are successful in finding them 70 or 80 per cent of the time.” Karen says they are trying “very hard” to look for Sheila and Jim’s book and anticipates it will end up in the New Zealand history or history section. “We love reuniting books with their owners, but without a title or author it is a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack.” If you see Sheila and Jim’s precious book, email kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Strike sees surgeries cancelled Paula Hulburt Patients scheduled for elective surgeries at Nelson Hospital today are back on the waiting list as nurses vote to strike. New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) members across the hospital will walk off the job on Wednesday, forcing some elective surgeries and procedures to be postponed. The move follows an unsuccessful last-ditch effort on Monday to stop the nationwide strike. Nelson Marlborough Health (NMH) has contacted patients to postpone non-urgent elective surgeries, procedures and outpatient appointments in advance of the strike. General manager Clinical Services Pat Davidsen says patients were being contacted directly to postpone and reschedule appointments. “Patient safety is our top priority. “We need to postpone elective appointments so that we can ensure we are adequately staffed to provide safe care for our long-stay patients, and for those who need urgent and emergency care. “We apologise in advance for the disruption this may cause but this is a necessary measure to ensure that we can concentrate on continuing to provide safe care on the day of the strike.”

Nurses picketing on Rocks Rd last September as part of a national strike. Nurses are back on the picket line today. Photo: File. Nurses will come off shift at 10.45am until 7pm. Staff will be picketing on Waimea Rd, outside the hospital. “We respect the right of our staff to choose whether to strike or not and are trying to support each other. I’d like to thank those involved in preparing for this strike,” Pat says. He is also urging people not to delay seeking medical treatment or going to hospital if they need urgent medical assistance on 9 June. The New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) issued strike notices to the country’s district health boards (DHBs) after its 30,000 members who work in DHBs voted overwhelmingly in favour of an eight-hour strike. Lead Advocate and NZNO Industrial Advisor David Wait says members are angry. “Members are angry and frustrated at the first DHB offer received last month. That would

have given most members little more than 1.38 percent, just under the rate of inflation. This is despite the incredible sacrifices they made in 2020 to keep the country safe from COVID-19.” He added members were furious at the Government’s 5 May wage restraint announcement that would effectively freeze their wages for three years. “That anger has been clearly expressed in the strike ballot result, but this is about much more than just money. “Nurses, midwives, health care assistants and kaimahi hauora have been working under horrific and unsafe staffing conditions for a long time, made much worse by the pandemic, and they are genuinely worried about the future of the nursing profession. During the strike time, Nelson Hospital will continue to provide essential and urgent services.

Libraries farewell fines Hatchet drawn on neighbour

Erin Bradnock

Nelson libraries will join the growing trend of local libraries ridding late fees up and down the country. In a bid to make libraries more accessible, Nelson City Council has voted to removed late fees for overdue library items from July 1. But the move will hit ratepayers, with an additional $37,000 coming from the general rating pool to make up the shortfall. The issue of library fines was raised by community member Daniel Jackson as part of council’s Long Term Plan community submissions in mid-May. Daniel referred to other councils across the country making the switch in his submission, including Central Hawke’s Bay, Rangitikei District, Selwyn, and Masterton having removed library overdue fines and Auckland and Timaru are also looking to wave away fines. “I hadn’t been thinking about the issue until I saw an article a few months back discussing library fines and how other councils were getting rid of

Elma Turner Library librarians Laura Findlay and Rosamund Feeney welcome the end of library fines. Photo: Erin Bradnock. them. It also talked about how it was a barrier to access libraries for some community members,” says Daniel. Daniel's submission detailed research that found library fines do not have a significant effect on return rates for books and other items borrowed, and libraries that have removed fines experienced a significant increase in visitors and circulation. “I thought back to when I was a teenager, a disorganised but also book-loving teen who had racked up a few fines. Had my parents not been

able to step in with the cost I might not have been able to go back,” he says. Nelson City Council agreed with Daniel, with councillor Rohan O’Neill Stevens drafting and moving the motion to remove late fees. “I strongly believe our city needs to become more accessible and inviting, and the ‘great equalisers’ that are our libraries are a great place to start,” says Rohan. The motion was moved on May 20 to seemingly unanimous support from fellow councillors. The zero overdue fees policy

will apply to all late returned library items, including books, DVDs, magazines and other lending items. This will not change the existing lost books policy, which comes into effect when the borrowed item is 21 days overdue. There will still be a charge for borrowing DVDs. Council says the removal of the fees is a step toward making the library more accessible to everyone. “These fines disproportionally effect lower-income users and hold people back from using a space that belongs to everyone,” says Rohan.

A Nelson woman has been ordered to complete 80 hours of community work after a heated neighbourhood argument led to a hatchet being drawn. Caitlyn Elizabeth Blomfield, 25, pleaded guilty to two charges of threatening behaviour at Nelson District Court last Monday after tensions with an ex-neighbour reached boiling point last year. The charges refer to two incidents of intimidation between Blomfield and her ex-neighbour at a densely-populated Nelson cul-de-sac. According to the police summary of facts, the pair had gotten into a verbal argument outside their respective properties on July 27, 2020. During the altercation, Blomfield went into her home and came back outside holding a small black-handled hatchet. Blomfield returned inside shortly after, later telling police the weapon was used to intimidate the victim and she had no intention of using the weapon. Tensions heightened between the pair again later that year after the ex-neighbour had moved out of the area. When the victim returned on December 30 to visit friends in a neighbouring address, Blomfield and the victim ‘pulled the fingers’ at one another before Blomfield threatened to stab the victim. Defence Lawyer Wayne Jones told the courtroom there was "considerable bad blood" between the pair and the "problem" had been removed when the ex-neighbour moved away. Judge Jo Rielly described Blomfield’s actions as ‘inexcusable’. Blomfield was sentenced to 80 hours of community work for both charges.

Speeding near bike track worries parents Sara Hollyman Reporter

sara@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Atawhai parents are concerned it is only a matter of time before a child is injured or killed on a road where cars have been recorded driving more than 40kmh over the speed limit near a newlyinstalled pump track. Nelson City Council opened a new pump track at Corder Park earlier this year, which sits along the roadside of Atawhai Crescent. Atawhai Crescent resident Genna Wells says while the track has been an amazing addition for local children, she is concerned that there is no fencing or barrier to protect children from the road. She raised the issue of cars speeding along the stretch of road with the council shortly after the track opened and was told council had performed speed checks in the area which had recorded cars doing more than 90kmh along there'. Nelson City Council group manager infrastructure Alec Louverdis says speed monitoring was carried out at three points along Atawhai Crescent, including near the pump track, in front of the local Four Square and another point between the two

Insert: The three points where Nelson City Council recently undertook speed monitoring. areas, between January 2019 and September 2020. Each point was monitored separately for one week each, and recorded average daily traffic of between 900 and 3000 vehicles per day with 85 per cent of them travelling below the speed limit or within 3kmh of it. However, at the point closest to the pump track, 15 per cent of cars were travelling faster than 53kmh with the fastest going between 90-100kmh. “I don’t want to have to go out

of my house and see a terrible incident like a child has been hit by a car, that’s what I’m worried about,” says Genna. “The track is close to the road, there’s the blind corner from the bridge and there’s no slow down or high-children area signage, so if you don’t know that this pump track’s here, the cars just come hoofing along.” Genna says she would like council to lower the speed limit past the playground site, install speed bumps and look at installing

a fence or barrier between the pump track and road such as the Washington Valley playground has. “The track is so great, even adults are using it, it’s awesome. It's such a great thing that council have done it, we really needed this upgrade, but I just can’t believe that there’s nothing been done about the speeding.” Local mum Bailey Smith says her children are regular users of Corder Park and the speed vehicles travel in the area

concerns her. “My bike bus meets there on school days as well and it gets really hard to cross the road some days with speeding cars, especially around the Four Square and Dodson Valley. It is a very busy area,” she says. Genna says if it was just during the night that they were hearing cars doing such high speeds she could put it down to “bloody idiots”. “But it’s not, it’s all hours of the day. The intersection at Rainbow Drive, the bridge and now the pump track is just a cocktail of disaster.” Alec says there are no plans for a barrier or fence to be installed between the pump track and the road but council are currently in the process of looking at all speed limits in Nelson through a citywide speed limit review. He says the review is being guided by proposed changes to the way speed limits are set. This is currently out for national consultation, for details go to the Waka Kotahi NZTA website. “At this stage, the speed limit on Atawhai Crescent will be considered as part of our review and we aim to consult with residents and other affected parties over the summer,” he says.

When Jacquetta Bell saw she had received an email from the Prime Minister’s office she assumed they were asking her for information about someone else. To her surprise, the email was congratulating her on being awarded a Queen’s Service Medal. “It was a big surprise, I had to do a double take.” Jacquetta was honoured for her services to arts and the community. Her career has included working with and helping create iconic events such as the Readers and Writers programme at the Nelson Arts Festival and Smokefreerockquest. “Everybody says they don’t deserve it, I feel I have been really privileged in my working life because I have had a lot of fun.” Jacquetta was a pioneer in the world of private radio, working for Fifeshire FM in the 80s. “It was quite radical, it felt very free and ground-breaking.” Through her Nelson Media Agency, Jacquetta has provided free services to voluntary organisations throughout the region from Light Nelson to the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary.

Victory kids flying high Erin Bradnock Victory Primary School students experienced the opportunity of a lifetime last Tuesday, getting to fly high in a hot air balloon. The ride was courtesy of the Flying High Project, aimed to inspire kids to take up STEAM learning to create a stronger, sustainable future for themselves and their communities. Room 15 teacher Anna van Enter says the project is about getting the kids thinking deeper about their place in their school and community. "This is the launch of our Dream

Big Project. The kids are getting a bird's eye view of their local area and that will feed back into some work we'll do in class about how we can improve our school and community," says Anna. The balloon was tethered high at least three stories off the ground at Broad Fields opposite Victory Primary School. "We'll have a look at what we can improve and get about improving them. It's the best motivator," she says. Classmates and friends Jashna Sharma, Florence Langi and Freya Goodwin got to fly altogether. The trio agrees it was a restless night due to their excitement.

"I kept waking up in the middle of the night wishing it was the morning," says Jashna. Florence went so far as to say the anticipation was more exciting than Christmas Eve. "I was up at 5am I was so excited. It was so cool," says Florence. Flying High have flown their education programme at over 30 schools throughout the country, focusing on 8-14-yearolds and low decile schools. The Flying High STEAM programme has reached over 6,000 young people to inspire kids to take up STEAM learning to create a stronger, sustainable future for themselves and their communities.

A group that believes trans rights encroach on women’s rights has been granted permission to speak in Nelson tonight. Speak Up For Women has courted controversy throughout the country after attempting to speak in multiple cities and being denied. However, Nelson City Council has approved the group’s application to speak at the Trafalgar Hall. Speak Up For Women strongly opposes the government's proposal to allow people to self-identify their sex in the Births, Deaths, Marriages and Relationships Registration Bill. It also believes ‘women are adult human females; girls are human female children.’ Nelson City Councillor Rohan O’Neill Stevens is “beyond angry and disappointed” about the decision. Rohan says councillors never had a full discussion about the issue. “It is currently very difficult to justify not booking someone at a council venue but something like this is particularly at a council venue is just giving a platform for harmful views.” Council says this has been a difficult

decision to reach and not one that was taken lightly. "Council staff met with representatives from the LGBTQIA+ community and spoke to the organisers of the event to understand their viewpoints and gain an appreciation of the concerns of all parties before reaching a decision." Group Manager Community Services Andrew White says the council remains committed to supporting Nelson’s LGBTQIA+ community and that the council has consulted with the Police to support any protests being held in a safe manner. "If at any point Council believes the health and safety risk escalates to a point where it is not manageable, or Council is not satisfied with the plan produced by SUFW, Council reserves the right 03 546 4455 to cancel Bays Dentures the book41 Washbourn Drive, ing." Wāhine almost meeting its fundraising goal Charles Anderson A Nelson-born project that champions the story of Māori women's voices and stories has almost met its fundraising goal to take the exhibition around the South Island. Wāhine is a multimedia exhibition that started in the Top of the South and features local women. The plan is now to take it around the South Island, adding portraits of women from each iwi as it goes. Its creator, Loren Pasquier, uses photography, music, soundscapes, and interviews with the women to build an immersive portrait of each women’s story. Loren has lived in Nelson for the past few years and became passionate about the stories of indigenous Māori women. She wanted to do something to help share those stories with a wider audience. She currently has a Boosted campaign where 60 per cent of the total funds have been raised. People can make donations at https://boosted. org.nz/projects/wahine

Nelson volunteer's royal promotion Tracy Simonsen began volunteering for St John at just eight-years-old. Now over 40 years later Tracy has been awarded a royal honour for her community work in Nelson. The investiture ceremony recognising the contribution of St John staff and volunteers was held at the end of May at the Christchurch Transitional Cathedral. St John is the only organisation in New Zealand outside of Government with its own royal honours system, and Tracy was one of three St John members made a Commander this year for her exceptional work with St John Nelson Area Committee. Tracey began in the youth programme at just eight-years-old and has volunteered and worked with the organisation ever since.

Tall ship lives to sail on Charles Anderson A tall ship that was a regular site in Port Nelson has found a new owner and a new goal as it plans to set sail for Australia. Alvei, a tall ship built in 1920, became intimately acquainted with Port Nelson after its former owner Evan Logan crashed into Old Main Wharf in 2016. Evan, who made Nelson his home for many years, had his last adventure with Alvei in 2018 when he died in hospital in Suva, Fiji from pneumonia. US-born Logan was known for his aid work around the Pacific, and he was a regular visitor to this part of the country. Evan’s friend and fellow local boat enthusiast Jeffrey Shalcrass recently linked back up with the ship in Russell, in the Bay of Islands. He met up with Alvei’s

new owner Geoffrey Jones who plans to continue the ship’s adventures by sailing it to Australia. But Covid restrictions and a constant battle to keep the ship in good condition have delayed the US-based owner. He is running the boat as a non profit where he invites anyone to help sail the the boat and keep its travels going. “Geoffrey was fortunate enough to take ownership of Alvei in Fiji after the previous owner Evan, who gave a lifetime of love and work to keep Alvei travelling the world,” Jeffrey says. “Evan, I am sure, will be pleased that the new owner plans to continue Alvei’s journeys with many different crews also enjoying Alvei’s adventures.” Jeffrey says he hopes to join Alvei for a leg of that eventual journey, and be part of the ongoing adventures.

Nelson Matters: Yes, the Weekly’s quote of the week was in Nick Smith’s 26/5 ‘Nelson Matters’. He said: “The Budget debate in Parliament the other week had Labour MP’s boasting of being ‘proud socialists’, my problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money.” So according to Nick, if you are not wealthy, you are worthless, and your children can go cold and hungry to pay the rent! Totally behind the community rejection. Will help wherever I can. We can’t let insanity rule. Lynette Stevenson

I absolutely agree. Tahunanui did not do well with clearways last time they tried, so why on earth would it work now? Barbara Gould

I was a traffic monitor at Tahunanui school in the 1960s when I went to school there. We didn't have all the stuff they have now, same place too. Marilyn Corson

So good. This is awesome. We need more great things like this for our community. Nicky Van de Geest

Free child car seat fittings in June: Actually, this needs to happen more often. People still don't know that children should be in an approved seat till they are 148cm tall, because before then the seatbelts don't fit properly. Also, children shouldn't sit in the front seat until they are older because if they crash the air bag will suffocate them. Matariki to light up Victory

WEDNESDAY 9 June 2021

Kate Russell Reporter

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Victory’s annual Matariki Celebration and Lantern Hīkoi is set to light up the Railway Reserve next month. School and community performances, hot soup, a hāngi, fire poi, and African drumming will all be part of the event on July 2. The occasion marks the Māori New Year with the rise of the nine stars of the Matariki or Pleiades cluster. Organiser Steve McLuckie from the Victory Community Centre says they have taken on board community feedback from previous years and made some changes to the popular event. This includes holding the event on a Friday night instead of a Wednesday. “We will kickstart at 3:10pm with some free hot soup in the car park before the afternoon’s activities.” Then there will be performances in the hall from Victory Primary School and community groups at 3:50pm. “We're aiming to serve the hāngi from 5:15pm and for our Hīkoi to start at 6:15pm,” Steve says. The hāngi is $5 per serving and there is a vegetarian curry option. Cash-only tickets for the kai will be available to purchase on the day. The route for the Hīkoi is different this year and will head south along Vanguard St from the school, up onto the Railway Reserve then back down to the community centre.

From left are Kiri Cooper, Steve McLuckie, Jenni Bancroft, Karla Robertson-Browne with 22-month-old Hunter, Sabien Blazek, and Arawhita Wiringi from the Victory Community Centre. Photo: Kate Russell. “It’s a 1.2km loop, which is shorter than the usual 4km walk that was done in the past.” Steve says The Light Nelson Collective will be lighting up the Railway Reserve. “It’ll be pretty magical.” Organisers are still looking for more volunteers to help at the event. “We certainly need extra people power. We’re going to need extra people to help with serving kai. It would also be great to have some people to help with the clean-up,” says Steve. They are also encouraging people to bring their own plates and cutlery for the kai. “We’re hoping to keep waste at a minimum.” Steve says they are looking forward to bringing the

much-loved event back to the community after last year’s event was cancelled due to Covid-19. “It’s going to be awesome, lots of people are looking forward to it. It means a lot to people and bringing so many people together in the depths of winter is pretty special.” If you are interested in volunteering at the event, email Steve at vcccoordinator@ victory.school.nz or call 03 546 8389. Victory’s annual Matariki Celebration and Lantern Hīkoi is on Friday, July 2 from 3:10pm - 7pm at the Victory Community Centre. Bring a lantern or torch and wrap up warm. Wakefield Homestead. – we lived in Christchurch before moving to Nelson. In 2012 my friend said ‘hey, have you been to Zumba? There’s some classes around the corner,’ then I was hooked, and before long I trained as a Zumba Instructor!” Visit the Zumba with Renata Facebook page! Stay connected! Volunteer! Make friends! That is some of the most important advice you’ll ever get about aging well.

We can’t control our age, but we can help to slow down the process by making some good choices. Retiring can feel like a well earned holiday at first, but eventually, not working, can take its toll on our mental health. Connecting and strengthening our social ties with others can keep us healthier for longer and may add years to our lives. Most research supports the idea that staying busy, maintaining social connections and finding meaning and purpose in our daily routine are all part of healthy aging. Volunteer somewhere that will keep you active, engaged and give you a reason to get up in the morning. The Volunteer Expo is a joint venture initiative by Volunteer Nelson and Age Concern, which is funded by the Nelson City

council. It will give our greater Nelson community a chance to engage with, interact and connect with more than 30 organisations who greatly value the role that volunteers play. Come and be part of the volunteer expo at Annesbrook Church on the 26th June from 10am until 2pm. Word has it that we spend over 25% of our lifetime sleeping. And so surely common-sense dictates that we get a proper sleep on a good quality mattress, and preferably one that doesn’t break the budget. As we get older many things change, including our sleep habits. Some people develop extra aches and pains, others suffer from insomnia, and getting your sleeping situation sorted helps to alleviate or reduce these issues.

Left to right, Ellie Young, Jane Solly, Holly Drummond, Gordon Oldfield and Ernie the guide dog at last year’s Volunteer Expo Nelson Bed’s director, Dave Bary, can help guide you through choosing the right option. “We find people appreciate comfort more as they get older and luxurious pillow top mattresses are popular. So too are ‘his and hers’ beds, and zip apart mattresses.” The ‘his and hers’ option works perfectly if you like different mattress qualities to your partner, and because Dave and his team make their beds right here in Nelson, they can custom make one to suit you both – soft on one side, firm on the other. If you are looking for a new bed or a better night’s sleep, make sure you talk to Dave first! Need expert advice on dentures? Nelson-based Wilson Denture

Winter maintenance equals year long benefits

Angus Grant knows a thing or two about trees. He has spent much of his life pruning, chopping, and removing them from properties across the Nelson Tasman region. Spending much of his younger years in the silviculture industry removing 15-20-year-old pine trees he has now turned his attentions to property maintenance. Angus says he is somewhat of a handyman and can tackle most maintenance jobs around a property but specialises in hedge trimming, pruning and removing trees and shrubs, spraying gorse and weeding but can also tackle jobs such as a leaky tap while on site. He has been a self-employed handyman since the early 2000s and has picked up many tips, tricks and skills across a wide range of home and renovation works. He says it is a great time to be thinking about tidying up your property with trees in more of a dormant stage throughout winter. “It’s a great time to get those loose branches off, bring the hedge and shrubs back into shape or take the tops off those trees that have got a bit high and are blocking the sunlight.

“It’s even a good time to get the larger trees down. I can get them down safely, cut it up for firewood ready for next year, or take all the rubbish away with me.” Angus says the best part of his job is stepping onto a property that’s looking a little unruly and transforming it into something the residents can be proud of. While he specialises in tree works, he is also more than capable of building fences and has done a lot of work on rural properties with farm fencing as well as paling fences for inner city properties. Angus says end of tenancy tidy ups are another specialty with him able to come in, tidy up the yard, mow the lawns, check out any minor maintenance issues or spot paint jobs, to keep the landlord happy. He says there is no job too big or small for him to look at and is happy to pop round, assess and quote any works needed. A true handyman through and through, don’t hesitate to give Angus a call to discuss any ideas or jobs you need done. He can be reached on 0211 333 489 or by emailing Angusgrnt22@gmail.com

Last gasp try breaks Stoke hearts Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Stoke’s fairy tale finish in front of a raucous home crowd for its 75th jubilee was ripped away from it thanks to a last-gasp try by Marist centre Rahiri Witehira at Greenmeadows on Saturday. The match-winning try, in the final play of the game, came just moments after he threw an intercept pass which looked to have given away the game. Witehira says scoring right in front of the packed Stoke clubrooms made it even more special. “We just got our tails up and knew we could get it done, we have learnt how to win," says Witehira. It was a heart-breaking loss for Stoke, who showed tremendous courage on defence in the face of a relentless late assault. “They deserved the win just as much as we did but we are glad to get across the line.” Elsewhere, Waimea Old Boys were also celebrating a milestone, the club’s 125th anniversary with a match for the Noel Barton trophy against Nelson at Jubilee Park. The hosts weren’t troubled, picking up a 56-14 win, while on Friday night in Riwaka, Kahurangi bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 51-3 win over Moutere/Awatere and Wanderers beat Renwick in Brightwater, 26-10. Meanwhile, Nelson College's unbeaten run in the Crusaders Championship came to an end in the cruellest of circumstances last week. Up 17-13 and in possession with time all but up on the clock,

Marist halfback Cleve Barrell looks for a gap in the Stoke defence during his side’s dramatic win at Greenmeadows on Saturday. Photo: Barry Whitnall/Shuttersport. Marlborough Boys College winger Cooper Roberts snatched an intercept and set off. Nic Sauira came screaming across in cover, but Roberts had too much gas and went in under the sticks to claim a dramatic victory. Roberts says he wasn't sure he had the speed when he saw the goal line 80 metres in front of him "It was just instincts really," he said after scoring the matchwinner. Nelson College's Will Thornalley had a superb performance at halfback but says that was just about the worst way to lose a game. "Pretty gutted, it was a great fight by them. We will bounce back and come into Waimea Combined stronger."

Boxing legend passes

Legendary Nelson boxing coach Les Rackley snr. has passed away, aged 92. Les' renowned gym, the Bishopdale Scout Den, was the breeding ground for many famous boxers, including his own sons, to national and international

acclaim. Described as a fiery perfectionist, Les always sent his boxers into the ring well equipped to acquit themselves with honour. His fighters claimed 55 New Zealand titles, 20 South Island titles and more than

50 provincial titles between 1968 and 1986. Les himself fought as a welterweight in England, learning his craft in the army and the merchant navy before immigrating to New Zealand in 1949. He coached and trained New

Zealand boxing teams from 1972 to 1982, a period which included the 1974 and 1982 Commonwealth Games and the Oceania Games in 1973 and 1975. Les' funeral will be held at Marsden House 11am on Thursday, June 10.

Suburbs top Blenheim’s best in football Chatham Cup Peter Jones

Nelson Suburbs may have progressed to the third round of the prestigious Chatham Cup competition at Blenheim’s A&P Park on Monday, but they were made to battle all the way for their 2-1 victory. The Mainland Premier side were up against Rangers AFC, the Marlboroughbased side who are defending champions in the Nelson division league. Although the visitors were hot favourites to prevail, the closeness of the scoreline is indicative of the nature of the match. Playing in drizzle and on a slippery pitch, Suburbs opened the scoring in the just the fourth minute, a 35m free kick from influential midfielder Alex Ridsdale skidding into goal at the near post. Up front, Josh Moffat, Ben Polak and Carl ConnorMcClean were dangerous throughout, running hard into space and often testing Rangers’ keeper Liam Kennedy. However, the home side,

rather than dropping their heads after such an early setback, began to find the pace of the game and created some opportunities of their own. Rangers’ strikers Adam Rose, Sam Pearson and Jono Masters began to find some space but, with defenders Hamish Cadigan, Sam Ayers and Lucas Hogg, plus keeper Corey Wilson combining expertly, the score remained the same until the break. The equalising goal came in the 55thminute, through Rangers’ player/coach Tore Waechter. After squandering a clear chance to drive the ball into the net with his left foot minutes earlier, the powerful midfielder curling the ball into the far corner with his right foot. With the scores level and all to play for, the tempo rose, Rangers often hammering long balls forward while Suburbs were content to thread passes together. The visitors made some changes as time ticked away and extra time loomed, with one of the substitutes,

William Tucker, provided the match-winner with five minutes to play. A stinging shot was parried by keeper Kennedy, Tucker first to react in a goalmouth scramble as he prodded the ball home. Rangers threw everything into attack, introducing subs Kane Elvy and Liam Clamp, but were unable reply in the short time remaining. Suburbs’ coach Neil Connell was content to get the result, never mind the scoreline, especially given his side had played a tough 1-1 Mainland League match against Selwyn on Saturday. “We always knew it was going to be a battle,” he said. “Conditions didn’t help and especially having a game two days ago the boys were a bit leggy as well and I think that showed … they looked a bit tired to begin with. “I didn’t feel we were put under too much pressure … overall we probably had around 60-70 percent of possession. All in all, we will take the win and move on to the next round.” He singled out Hogg, Ayers

10k

The Rangers’ side showed they could foot it higherrated opponents, especially Waechter, Harrison Pine and key defender Jordy Columbus. Waechter said his charges, while obviously disappointed, would be able to take plenty of positives away from the match. “Every time we play cup

footy we just want to be up for it and everyone was today. It is frustrating losing to two fairly scrappy goals but we just wanted to show that we could match these guys, and we were more than competitive … everyone put in a big shift, that’s all you can ask for.” Nelson Suburbs 2 (Alex Ridsdale, Will Tucker) Rangers AFC 1 (Tore Waechter). Mike Pero Nelson Giants star Tom Ingham in action against the Taranaki Airs on Monday. Photo: Trina Bererton/Shuttersport.

Giants stand tall with bounce back win The Mike Pero Nelson Giants have responded from last Thursday night's dramatic one-point loss to the Manawatu Jets by disposing of the Taranaki Airs 100-86 in a quality Queen's Birthday clash. Played in front of another big crowd at the Trafalgar Centre the home team didn't disappoint. The Airs hit the court full of running and set the early pace,

but once the Giants settled it was one-way traffic through the opening quarter as Hunter Hale and Donte Ingram found their stroke, pushing the home team to a 29-16 lead. By the end of the half the Giants were out to a 57-35 lead and were as equally dominant on the boards. Tai Wynyard was doing all he could to help the Airs keep

touch, while Marcel Jones was ever present and shooting at a good clip. As the third period unfolded both Hale and Ingram went to another level to ensure the result was safe, which sparked a flurry of subs and gave the Giants' second unit some heavy minutes. Nic Trathen, Tysxun Aiolupotea, Josh Leger, Tyler Marsh and Riley

Super ruGBY TippinG

Bensemann all got amongst the action, bringing plenty of cheers from the crowd and the likes of Hale, Ingram and Sam Dempster watching on. Though down by as much as 34 points at one stage, the Airs battled back late with a 27-14 last quarter, but it all came too late. The win pushes the Giants up to equal-fourth on the Sal's NBL

ladder. For the Airs, a string of losses is something they will want to turn around quickly. Nelson Giants 100 defeated Taranaki Airs 86 Giants: Donte Ingram (22pts, 11rbs), Hunter Hale (20pts, 7ast), Nic Trathen (10pts). Airs: Marcel Jones (32pts), Tai Wynyard (17pts).
