Calls for increased bus safety Jenny Nicholson and Charles Anderson A petition for mandatory fitted seatbelts on school buses is growing momentum in the region after two crashes in the space of several months.

The nationwide petition has gained 6,500 signatures in four weeks with local principals throwing their weight behind the movement. “It seems like a no-brainer to me,” says Clifton Terrace School principal Rob Wemys.

In May, several students were left shaken after a vehicle pulled out in front of a school bus on Trafalgar St on its home run. “The recent crash on Trafalgar St at relatively low speed and the bumps and bruises both physically and mentally from that should be

an indicator that seat belts are an essential item,” says Rob. He says students are so good at making sure that other elements of their day-to-day lives are safe, so getting on a bus and putting on a seatbelt should be just “what we do”.

“It has always seemed a strange anomaly to me that we would take up to 60 kids and drive them at speed and hope like hell that they get to their destination in one piece.”

Nayland choirs hit the right notes Kate Russell It was big wins and big voices all round for Nayland College at the region’s top school choral festival. Two choirs from the school cleaned up all the highest honours at the Nelson-Marlborough regionals of The Big Sing Secondary Schools Choral Competition on June 17 in Blenheim. Out of nine choirs, mixed choir NayCol Chorale and girls’ choir Sotto Voce took out the top three awards between them.

In 2018, St John urged the Government to make wearing seatbelts compulsory on some bus services after two people died and many others were injured in a spate of accidents - but the calls fell on deaf ears. In March this year, a bus carrying Murchison Area School students crashed into a ditch injuring eight students. Acting principal Sarah Peacock says that in light of that incident, the school considers seatbelts in buses very important, and supports them being mandatory. Anne Bolton remembers when she heard her son’s Nelson Christian Academy bus had crashed in 2011 near Wakefield. “He was thrown through the window and woke up on the grass. He had concussion, bad bruising

His pockets were full of glass.” She says that particularly in areas where there are 100kmh speed limits, seatbelts should be mandatory. The car that hit the bus her son was in was going 100 kmh and the bus flipped three times. “If you protect small amounts of people in one vehicle, why wouldn’t you protect lots of people in one vehicle,” says Anne. Organisers of the petition say it is

unsafe and illogical that parents who drop their children off by car at pick-up points for the buses unbuckle their children from legislatively required restraint. However, buses don’t have the same basic safety equipment. Ministry of Education’s head of education infrastructure service, Kim Shannon, says transport services that carry about 100,000 students around the country daily, have excellent safety

records. She says they regularly assess transport service providers to ensure they comply with all relevant safety requirements. “Research carried out by Waka Kotahi in 2010, as well as international research, shows that the structural integrity of a bus has a significant impact on child safety. Our requirements on this mean that students are less likely to be ejected from their seat or harmed in an accident.” Nelson MP Rachel Boyack says that the Ministry of Transport has previously considered whether to mandate seatbelts on buses but that it found the cost of retrofitting seatbelts in all buses in New Zealand would be prohibitive. “The Minister has signalled that he is keen to keep an open mind on this issue based on evidence if new information emerges.”

Where is the Pride crossing? Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

A central city project that was tagged as a “quick win” in February now will have to wait until after winter due to “logistical considerations” and “engagement with key stakeholders”. In late February, Nelson City councillors attended an infrastructure meeting where councillor Rohan O’NeillStevens spearheaded a proposal to paint a "Progress Pride" crossing in the city centre. It was suggested that the project was ready to go and would have a quick turnaround. However, now it has emerged that the project does not yet have a set location and will not be installed before the end of winter. The Progress Pride crossing is budgeted to cost between $5000 and $9000, which will come from existing council budgets such as the Youth Council. Council currently has a $7000 budget, based on a $5000 contribution from the Youth Council and $2000 raised by community activist Sophie Weenink Smith. Deputy mayor Judene Edgar says there were several timing and logistical considerations that came to light after the meeting in February. “In particular, staff have said that it will take approximately 4

Mayor Rachel Reese, councillor Mel Courtney and deputy mayor Judene Edgar with the Pride flag, which was flown on Civic House for Nelson Pride Week. Photo: Supplied. - 6 weeks to implement from the time that go-ahead is given.” She says this time is required to secure the resin and paint, which isn't an off-the-shelf product, engage contractors, and organise any road closures and traffic management. At the infrastructure meeting, it was agreed that the City Centre Engagement Group, chaired by councillor Mel Courtney, would undertake engagement with key stakeholders, notably this includes the LGBTQIA+ community and blind and low vision citizens. Judene says a series of meetings have taken place to discuss the seven possible sites along Trafalgar St, along with cost and maintenance implications, and objectives. “Understanding the purpose and objectives of the crossing has been a critical element of these discussions, both in informing the location, but also the broader role council has

in supporting our LGBTQIA+ community.” She says it has also become clear that there is no singular location preference. “However, it is worth noting that pavement markings, signage matters, and related activities are governed by various standards, specifications, and guidelines. “Unfortunately, in May, staff advised that the weather is not conducive to this work now as it's colder and wetter.” Judene says that the discussions with key stakeholders have enabled the council to consider the purpose and objectives of the crossing. "From a seed of an idea, in conjunction with the community, we are looking forward to a great outcome which signifies that Nelson is a welcoming and inclusive community, and aligns with our mission and community outcomes."

Nelson’s Lost Projects: Kirby Lane container mall Kate Russell Reporter

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Was it a project that was too far ahead of its time? The man behind the Kirby Lane shipping container mall believes so. Galen King, the owner and creator of The Bridge Street Collective, first proposed the development in 2016. However, after three years of “bureaucracy and red tape” getting in the way, the idea fizzled into oblivion. The proposal included creating a temporary mall in the centralcity lane with shipping containers that would house boutique shops, eateries, co-working and event spaces, offices and even a children’s playground. “We had this empty space in town and once we settled on the idea of creating a shipping container development, we definitely thought it would be a costeffective and quick project.” But after applying for consent, the project hit a wall. Costs skyrocketed due to fire and earthquake strengthening standards required from Nelson City Council for the secondstorey container construction. In fact, it would have ended up costing over $1 million for a temporary project. “As we designed it, it got bigger and more complex, but the fire and earthquake safety requirements

The Kirby Lane shipping container mall as it was first conceived. Photo: Supplied. made it cost-prohibitive,” says Galen, who is now based in New York City. “There was also a lot of resistance from business owners - some very narrow-minded thinking about the value of just one or two car parks. We faced that every step of the way. “We had so many ideas to try and bring vibrancy into the city centre and there were some councillors that really fought and worked hard to try and make this happen, but I think we were ahead of our time.” Galen says, despite “wasting a lot of time and money,” he is happy with how Kirby Lane is today. “We have permanent food carts, the farmers market, and the public interacting with each other.” The community space is also

available to hire for public or private functions and events. Galen says his dream is to one day create a multi-use building on the site for retail, offices, and accommodation. Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese says the project “was an exciting venture for our city centre, which council was keen to support”. “Staff worked extensively prelodgement with Galen and his advisers. The council were then able to issue the resource consent within one month. A building consent was also required and was granted.” Rachel says part of that process involved assessment of the Building Code, and as all the containers were proposed as separate commercial tenancies, including stacked containers, this

Kirby Lane is now a vibrant hub for markets and street food vendors. Photo: Charles Anderson. required individual fire rating for each to ensure fire safety for tenants and shoppers. “All necessary council approvals were given for the project, but the applicant decided not to proceed. While it is always disappointing when something innovative is unable to get off the ground, council is committed to actively working with developers on similar projects.” Another private inner-city project, this time from Cephas Property, also never went ahead. The company, which helped develop the Richmond Mall, proposed a ‘mixed-use precinct’ in 2018, providing boutique retail as well as food and offices. The project proposed incorporating 2425 square metres of the Wakatu Square carpark

that Cephas Property intended on buying from the council. This would have joined up to retail and office space on Bridge St and Trafalgar St that they acquired in 2018. At the time, Steve Baigent, managing director of Cephas Property, said that it was “an exciting opportunity to contribute to the revitalisation of the centre of Nelson”. However, the proposal was withdrawn in 2019 after a possible anchor tenant, Farmers, backed out. The Mayor said in a statement that the council was disappointment that the development was not going ahead. Some retailers welcomed the development, but it was criticised by some community groups.

Shoplifting tourist pays price Erin Bradnock

‘End of era’ for pharmacy duo Charles Anderson Editor

charles@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Caroline McPherson and Gill McLew have seen a bit of change in Stoke over their more than 30 years working at Hurst and Taylor Pharmacy. The suburb has grown and so have the customers. But that is what they are both going to miss.

Caroline’s last day of her 34year stint was last Friday and Gill will retire in a couple of months after 36 years in the job. “My friendship with Gill has made the job,” says Caroline. “We have a really great friendship.” However, they both agree it is the customers that make the job worthwhile. “We see everyone in good times

and bad and I just love the people so much,” says Gill. “There has been lots of ups and downs, good times and sad times.” Gill says her husband has now retired and her children are back home from overseas with grandkids in tow. “So, it’s time to spend some time with them.” Caroline is moving on to work more on their family business.

The pharmacy used to be based out of the bakery next door on Main Rd Stoke but then it grew into Hurst and Taylor and has been in the same spot ever since. In Hurst and Taylor tradition a big spread was put on for Caroline on her last day. “It’s a bit of an end of an era,” says Caroline. “But I’ve stayed here for a long time because I love my job and I love the guys I work with.”

A woman who has been travelling through New Zealand for the past 18 months appeared in Nelson District Court last week on charges of shoplifting. French woman Sophie Nathalie Fazio, 32, pleaded guilty to three counts of shoplifting. Fazio told police she had fallen on hard times and has recently been living out of her car. According to the police summary of facts, Fazio visited Mitre 10 Mega on June 7 where she picked up some household goods. Fazio went onto take the items into the toilets to remove the packaging and place the them into her bags. Fazio placed the packaging back on the shelves before leaving with $146.93 worth of goods without paying. Fazio went onto commit similar offending just three days later at a New World supermarket. She hid items and paid for just three items before leaving with $180.51 of stolen goods. She returned on June 18 to New World and attempted to leave the store with stolen goods once again. Fazio had concealed items in her shopping bags before being stopped by a store manager. Fazio told police she was “in a bad place” at the time of offending. Judge Garry Barkle convicted Fazio on the three charges of shoplifting and ordered her to pay $335.33 immediately in reparations.

Sharing stories to get Housing fund welcomed young men talking Staff Reporter

Erin Bradnock Will Irvine wants to get young men talking. Aotearoa has the developed world’s highest youth suicide rate and men are three to four times more likely to die by suicide than women. In the wake of these daunting statistics, 16-year-old Nayland College student Will Irvine has created an Instagram page called BroTalk which is aimed to get young men talking. Will says BroTalk is about facilitating conversations surrounding mental health with young men sharing their own struggles and experiences. “It all starts with the attitudes on the playground. There's no room for sadness or grief for men, instead you’re expected to get aggressive or angry. There needs to be safe spaces for men to be sad,” says Will. Will was inspired to make the platform two months ago through the Young Leaders programme led by Volunteer Nelson.

Nayland College student Will Irvine, 16, is the founder of Instagram page BroTalk, which is aimed at getting young men talking about their mental health. Photo: Erin Bradnock. "I was struggling to work out what to work on while also struggling with my own mental health," he says. As of this week, the page is nearing 200 followers with contributions from Will’s peers, including longtime

friend Tiaki Sharp. Tiaki, 16, was the first to contribute to the page and was eager to join the conversation when Will approached him. “Growing up I’ve had some trouble with emotional stuff, even though I’ve dealt with a

lot of it on my own, it’s still there,” says Tiaki. After a conversation with Will and a photo, Tiaki shared his story on BroTalk. Tiaki’s post touched on struggling to cope with anger growing up and his experiences of racism as a young Māori man in Aotearoa. “There’s a lot of negative stereotypes about being Māori, I’ve known it all my life. It’s an awareness I’ve always had,” he says. Will says BroTalk has shared eight stories so far, mainly from his peers at school but he is looking to broaden the page’s scope. “I’m keen to try and get more stories from outside of my own community and expand outside my own circle.” He says BroTalk regularly receives messages from people sharing their gratitude for the page. “So far there’s been a lot of support and it’s a real positive space. Ultimately, change can start with talking to each other.”

Nelson MP Rachel Boyack has welcomed the news that criteria to access at least $1 billion of the $3.8 billion Housing Acceleration Fund (HAF) is now available. “This fund is designed to put money towards funding infrastructure projects to unlock housing development,” Rachel says. Expressions of interest in the contestable fund will be invited from June 30 and are due to close mid-August. After these expressions have been assessed, applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal. “The fund is for developments that will be expected to deliver over 100 homes in the Nelson Tasman region,” Rachel says. “The fund will help support the cost of key infrastructure like roads and pipes to homes.” Housing Minister Megan Woods says this was a key milestone in the Government’s plan to accelerate the development of build ready land to enable more homes to be built at pace and scale. “The housing supply crisis is a problem decades in the making that will take time to turn around, but we are starting to make inroads on increasing supply and this fund will make a real difference to increasing the supply of housing by assisting in overcoming a key barrier to building – access to basic infrastructure. “This is about getting the most houses in the places across the country, where they are needed, happening as quickly as possible.”

Anonymous donor helps fund six new homes Kate Russell Reporter

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Six new homes for people in housing need are currently being built in Nelson, thanks to a generous donation from an anonymous philanthropist. The two-bedroom homes are being built by the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust on Murphy St in Toi Toi at a cost of $2.5 million. However, an anonymous donor has helped the trust buy the land, which enabled it to gain government funding to support the construction costs. The trust has been operating since 2004 and was set up as a community response to the housing crisis in Nelson and Tasman. It is a registered community housing provider. Director Carrie Mozena says the new homes, for lowincome earners, are due to be completed in mid-December and she expects they will be in high demand. “The housing crisis in Nelson and Tasman is as severe as ever, and there is a huge need for affordable, healthy rental

The Nelson Tasman Housing Trust is building six new homes on Murphy St. Photo: Supplied. homes. We are committed to tackling the crisis by increasing the supply of affordable and social housing for people on low incomes,” she says. “Our houses are designed to be sunny and warm so our tenants can live in a comfortable, healthy environment. They also benefit from having secure tenancies, knowing they have a rental home as long as they need it. Some of our tenants have been in their homes for more than 10 years.” The new homes are sited to face north and will have heat pumps, double glazing, and more insulation than required by building regulations. They

will also have photovoltaic solar panels, to reduce the cost of power. Two of the homes will be wheelchair accessible. Carrie says the new homes will bring the trust’s total number of rental homes in Nelson and Richmond to 50. Its goal is to grow its housing portfolio to 100 homes in the next five years. Prospective tenants can apply through the trust’s website www.nelsonhousing.org.nz and will need to be approved to be on the Ministry of Social Development Housing Register, since funding for the project has been provided by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.

New supermarket goes green Jenny Nicholson The region's newest supermarket is Countdown’s greenest store to date. The 3450 square metre supermarket on Salisbury Rd has been in construction since September last year and aims to be New Zealand’s very first Green Star supermarket. The internationally recognised sustainability rating system takes into account the design, construction, and operation of buildings. MP Rachel Boyack, who spoke at the opening, says the supermarket is an incredible achievement for the area. “Green Star ratings go from 1 to 6 and this store is going to be a 4. That’s something to really be acknowledged as we need to reduce our emissions across New Zealand.” Countdown aims to push that rating to a 6 by 2025. To help reduce carbon emissions, every fridge and freezer has a glass door. According to Countdown, 10 doors save enough energy to power a New Zealand home for a year and save Co2 emissions equivalent to taking three cars off our roads for a year. They also mean warmer aisles for shoppers. Other green features include solar panels on the roof, LED lighting, EV charging points for customers’ cars, digital shelf labels to reduce paper use, an electric truck for the delivery of online orders

The instore pharmacy will dispense free prescriptions and the online service has a drive-thru pick-up point to make the experience easier for customers. Countdown’s general manager of property, Matthew Grainger, says

construction of the project “was spot on time”. Tasman Mayor Tim King says the supermarket is an “investment in the people of the region” with over 100 staff, whether they are part time, after school, holiday or career workers.

Supervision of the New Zealand Company emigrants and the administration of the ship’s rules came under the authority of the Surgeon Superintendent, and it was he who had the final say on all shipboard matters.

On arrival in the Nelson area good employment was reserved for those who had observed the ship’s rules. Passengers who were disobedient or quarrelsome stood a much poorer chance of good work.

Matariki Festival 2021 is set to be the region’s biggest Matariki celebration yet with hopes of drawing crowds of more than 3000 people. At Founders Heritage Park this Saturday, July 3, Nelsonians can expect entertainment from local kapa haka groups, other community groups and a special performance from singer-songwriter Sianne Dougherty. Lower Hutt-based performer Sianne will be performing live with Grove Roots before the evening concludes with a fireworks display at 7pm. Sianne says it is an honour to be a part of Whakatū's largest Matariki Festival yet. “It’s an awesome opportunity to perform somewhere new and meet new people. I’m looking forward to meeting some new rangitahi and celebrate Matariki in a new city,” she says. Nelson City Council’s Kaihautū Māori partnerships Pania Lee says this year’s festival has been “ramped up” with more performances and food since the council’s first celebration in 2019. “We’ve got a very full programme, the beauty of it is it’s very inclusive of our diverse community.” Matariki signals the Māori New Year. It is a time of renewal and celebration in New Zealand that begins with the rising of the Matariki star cluster. Matariki is set to become a public holiday in 2022. The budget for the Matariki Festival 2021 is up to $25,000, a cost council says covers the cost of the venue, fireworks, 20 Matariki celebration flags which are now installed on Trafalgar St, and other associated costs of hosting an event for the general

public. Council says it expect some of the costs of this event to be recouped from fees for stallholders. Kai stalls are set to open from 3pm with performances starting from

Nelson’s lost projects: Montgomery Square pocket park: Wow. This is such an interesting and pertinent series - hard to believe the amazing projects that were lost. Rachel Sanson

Another progressive project campaigned against by the suits of the day. If I'd have been living in Nelson back then I'd have been so frustrated at progressive projects being blocked. Dennis Goodman

What happened to it? Nelson happened to it. Rayon Mackenzie

The city feels dead when you go there – boring, dull, no vibe. Jill Goulding

No wonder Nelson’s city centre is dead when people can have such stupid objections accepted. Christine Gabites

public consultation and the mayor just seems to think she can spend the public's money any way she wants without listening to the public. Why do we have to constantly take local and national government to court to get them to listen? Frances Minogue

End of an era for Stoke Kindergarten teachers: Thank you for your commitment to the many children and families who have passed through Stoke Kindergarten. Belinda Roselli Aw, my two older girls went there. Lovely teachers. Wishing you both all the best. Nikita Scott Brilliant teachers, my oldest three children and a daughter-in-law were taught by Sue and Kay, best wishes for retirement. Jo van Berkel

Deep pockets, conservatism, and self-interest. Mel Orfi

Two awesome ladies who do a fabulous job. They taught our daughter in the early 2000s and I used to joke with Sue, who started teaching the year I was born. Enjoy your well-deserved retirement ladies. AnnMarie-Shane Gill

Opinion editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz facebook.com/nelsonweekly www.nelsonweekly.co.nz the kids and their passion was infectious. Enjoy your well-deserved retirement, Sue and Kay. You will be missed but never forgotten. Paul Boulton It is so awesome that you are finishing work together as planned, girls – congratulations. Having been there at the beginning of these years - it was immediately obvious to me that you were absolutely the dream-duo. The wonderful teamwork, the care for one-another, the laughs, and yes, - the dressups too. You managed to get whānau committees through the years right along with you on a journey of improvements - inside and out with your shared visions and enticements. The top-quality education, care, and love that you both consistently gave to all tamariki is an inspiration. So, so many hours through these years spent in that one very fortunate place and community. You can relax now and know that you had positive effects on thousands (small and big) plus be warmly recognised and respected wherever you go, for sure. Love and hugs. Sarah Stephen Good early childhood teachers are such a blessing, especially like these two. Enjoy your retirement ladies and

thanks from all the little people you've had such an influence on during your teaching. Linda Dooley Wow, you two … 27 funfilled years that will leave a lasting impression on so many families. You will be such a hard act to follow. Enjoy those sleepins as they are so deserved. Big hugs. Nikki Cooper Students strung out from social media: It amazes me how much the kids get on a laptop or computer at school. It should be for learning and certain apps should be banned. Children should not be allowed to use them until they hit a certain age, when they understand. I think it's appalling that children are allowed to take their phones to school. I also think it's appalling that there're no rules and regulations and that they can just jump on a phone or laptop and go on TikTok or YouTube. It's getting worse and worse. I will not let my children use those sorts of apps. Teachers need to be watching their students more. Danielle Angel Nelson to have one of the country’s only forensic nurse examiners:

Thank you INP, you are amazing with all our youth. This is fabulous that we now have a forensic nurse in Nelson. The next step would be to make the courts a safer place for people who have been sexually assaulted to tell their story - if their case even gets to court. Michelle Ashby

Richmond store removes sign refusing entry to vaccinated shoppers: People don’t need to be so cruel. I think the lady in the shop is lovely. This will be just another business fall victim to Covid if people stop going there because she thought something to be true and was trying to protect herself and other customers. I am not saying I have the same opinion as her or that it was the best move to put the poster in her window, but everyone is entitled to their own opinions about something. In this time of Covid madness and fear we are all just trying to figure things out. I presume that because the poster has been taken down now that she may have realised that it wasn’t good for the business and her income. Such a shame that the media had to make this a bigger issue than it was and possibly cause more damage. Be kind, people. Anita Parkes

Historic cottage filled with treasured memories At the top of historic Russell Street, is No 52. It’s where Madge Wilson was born in 1924. The house was built in 1903, and Madge’s parent’s John and May Wilson took ownership in 1918. Their home sat prominently against the skyline at the top of the ridge. John was a seaman, who served on the Nelson-Wellington ferries. Back then, the road up the hill was a rough dirt road. There were cottages clustered together near the bottom, but the upper slopes were farmland. In those days, Nelson Haven had not been reclaimed for Port and industrial use. The estuary came right up to a sea wall on Haven Road. Madge had one sister and two brothers. “We swam at the bottom of the hill, beside the sea wall opposite Franzen’s Ship Chandlery; there was an open space for small boats. It was good for a swim.” It was the time when boats could be seen anchored in the Haven and a railway line to the Port ran around beside the road. The Wilson children attended Auckland Point School and the boys’ and girls’ colleges. “When we went to tech to do cooking and sewing, we had bikes, so the boys would meet us and eat

what we had made that day.” At the end of World War II, Madge did her nursing training. “Our Father died in 1959; that’s when I went home to look after our mother. Mother died in 1967 and left this home to my sister and I.” The home has been altered slightly over the years. “The verandah has been enclosed. That’s the warmest part of the house in winter. As soon as the sun comes up, it shines in all day long. The trees have grown up in front. Ken and Father planted the largest of the two Pohutukawa. I was five, so around 1929.” In a booklet called ‘Historic Russell Street,’ an extract speaks fondly of the area. ‘There is something about the port side of Russell Street that is distinctly friendly and charming. On either side of the street, there are a number of quaint houses dating back the the 1870’s.” Madge is now 97 years old. The property has been in the family for 103 years. Rotary recognises community groups Staff Reporter Several community groups have benefitted from the work of the Rotary Club of Nelson after the awarding of its funding this year. Last week, the club gathered with recipients to celebrate the work they have done in the community. The largest donation of $10,000 was to The First 1000 Days, however, donations were also made to The Nelson Youth Choir, Big Brothers Big Sisters Nelson Tasman, Victory School for dictionaries and The Male

Room for the Whare Haumaru project, which is a joint Rotary project with the Whakatu Rotary Club, Rutherford Rotary Club and the Nelson West Rotary Club.

“The donations covered agencies who give care to all age groups in the Nelson community.” Other funds paid through Rotary International were the

purchase of three emergency response kits and a shelter box, as well as a Rotary Youth Leadership scholarship to send a local young person to a leadership course, and every child to a Future, Science and Technology forum. The total grants exceeded $20,000. Rotary Club of Nelson president, Gaile Noonan, thanked her board and club members for supporting the recipients. “The donations covered agencies who give care to all age groups in the Nelson community.”

Introducing Sista Trio Retreats - three actual sisters from Auckland. They are hosting a three-night women’s wellness retreat in the area in September. This is one of seven retreats these ladies will be hosting throughout the country for 2021, but Nelson resonates on a very personal level for them all. Their mother, who happens to be attending the retreat, was born in Blenheim as her father was posted at the RNZAF Base, Woodbourne at the time. She and her grandparents lived in Tahunanui where she attended Tahunanui Primary School. On a recent visit to Nelson, spending time with cousins, the suggestion was made to take a trip down ‘memory lane’ and check out the house where Grandpa used to live. The now-owners were welcoming and shared some history and information about the house. This connection to family and to the area means that these three sisters are really excited about this Nelson retreat. Held at the stunning Appleby House and Rabbit Island Huts, the retreat offers what the girls consistently offer on any retreat they host - connection with yourself. Equally they want to offer busy women rest to finding self-trust. They facilitate these retreats along the theme of releasing the powerful message that has been ingrained in our culture of constant self-improvement. Their mission is for you to embody the message that YOU - you wonderful human being, are enough. Just because you are retreating, learning, practicing mindfulness and all that cool (but sometimes serious) stuff doesn't mean you can’t have a bit of fun! So, they suggest you pack your pj’s, toothbrush, and some coffee if ya need it and treat yourself to some wonderful, wildly non-judgemental, kick arse self-care. Payment plans are available on any of their retreats, plus they also offer locals a ‘non-residential’ price. Perfect if you still want the comfort of your own bed but desire to spend the daylight hours retreating. Nayland choirs hit the right notes FROM PAGE 1

Celebrating 16 Years with giveaways Deborah and Greg Waddington, who own Cartridge Universe Nelson Tasman, have good reason to celebrate. The couple have been in business together for over 16 years now and coming up on July 1st, it has been a year since they rebranded. “We were Cartridge World for 15 years, but a year ago we changed our name to Cartridge Universe, so to celebrate,

during July, we will be giving away an Overnight Dinner & Spa Package for two at Kimi Ora Eco Resort to one lucky customer and a Food & Beverage Voucher from Trailways Hotel Restaurant to one lucky business,” says Deborah. The locally owned and operated team at Cartridge Universe is here to help with all your printing supplies. Deborah and Greg have been providing genuine brand and their own brand cartridges as well as refilling and refurbishing ink and toner/laser cartridges for over 16

Experts in their field

The local couple are experts in their field. “We have over 16 years’ experience in our industry,” says Greg. “We know the ins and outs of printers and cartridges, how they work and why they don’t work. There are a lot of compatible cartridges out there which have low quality ink and toner or the ink and toner in them is not suited for the printer, so they will damage your printer and give you poor printing results. Whereas our inks are specifically formulated to work correctly in your printer. We also provide a full guarantee with all our cartridges.”

years in Nelson and Tasman.

Cartridge Universe Nelson Tasman has two local stores, one is located in Nelson on Vanguard Street, and their second store is situated on Queen Street. “Craig, who manages our Richmond Store, has been with us for over 13 years, so his knowledge is also huge.” Cartridge Universe has a huge range of printers, multifunctions, photocopiers and document solutions available as well as inks, toners and office supplies. You will find all the reputable ink and toner brands at

Mixed choir member Will Roddick says they are “elated” with their placings. “It’s the best result we’ve ever had, we’ve worked really hard.” He credits much of their success to the fact that their choirs are open to anyone who wants to have a go. “The nice thing about our choirs is that we’re not auditioned, we’re not exclusive. Because it’s such

a great group of people, you really support each other, and everyone learns quite a lot musically from being in the choirs.” Student Ysabella Abel says this allows for a “very positive environment”. The school’s performing arts coordinator, Jules Ferguson Brill, says the enthusiasm from the students is evident. “They’re always singing, even when they’re not practicing or competing. I’m blown away,

they are just so talented.” Acting principal Hannah Banks says she was impressed with the student’s performances. “They had interesting song choices and there was so much character in their performances.” The Big Sing has grown into New Zealand’s largest choral event with close to 10,000 young people from over 250 schools taking part in regional festivals nationwide each year.

Cartridge Universe Nelson Tasman’s Richmond store is managed by Craig Keelty who has been with business for 13 years.

Cartridge Universe Nelson Tasman is owned and operated by a local family. Their two stores are located on Vanguard Street and Queen Street. Shakayla, Deborah, Greg, Aaleyah, Addison. both stores, and their own Cartridge Universe brand too. “We can also refill and refurbish a wide range of inkjet and laser cartridges.”

A family-oriented business

Cartridge Universe is a very family-oriented business. “Our son has recently finished working for us – he was our sales manager and has just left Nelson to follow his soccer career overseas. Our 17-year-old daughter Shakayla is working for us, our 12-year-old daughter helps out from time to time and our 6-yearold daughter is the ‘lolly tester.’ Craig is a longtime family friend since my childhood

days.” Deborah and Greg are very community-minded too. Over the years they have supported lots of local netball and soccer teams through sponsorships, etc.

Great deals, smart solutions

Cartridge Universe likes to spend time understanding your printing requirements and provide smarter, cost effective printing solutions. “We are the Sharp Document Solutions dealer for the Top of the South,” says Greg. “We can assist you in all your document solutions needs and can offer managed print solutions tailored for business.” Greg can come out to you discuss your office requirements, or customers are welcome to pop into the store and talk to the team. There was a midwinter celebration of creativity at Garin College last week with normal lessons stopped for the students to participate in Mahi Toi. There were a wide range of choices for students including the opportunity to shine in art, photography and cake making. After two days of participation from all students, the week finished with the Mahi Toi showcase on Friday night. The hall was packed with students and families watching the best performing arts from the week, from tap dance and house dances to violin, haka and mime. The week was led by arts captains Josh Hall and Millie Pumphrey who both performed in the showcase, including items alongside recent winner of the national intermediate Gold Guitar award Zac Giffiths. Clifton production brings the drama Celine Specht and Lucy Daughtrey

Clifton Terrace School is putting on a production at the end of the term and the students are definitely looking forward to it. We usually do a production every second year but last year, unfortunately because of Covid, that didn’t happen. Called ‘What’s The Crime Mr Wolf?’, the story follows the work of Lord Feathers of Eiderdown and Fabletown's Forest Court as they bring charges against Mr Wolf for his dastardly deeds. The prosecutors, Mr Hugh Mann and his assistant Justin Case call a range of characters to give evidence, from Johnny Mole (secret agent) to the Three Little Pigs and Red Riding Hood. But are the well-known characters of fairy-tales just what they seem? And how can a nonvegetarian human accuse a wolf of being a meat eater? In this courtroom comedy we have

wacky, singing squirrels as clerks of the court; Sergeant Trunk, Constable Twig and police dog Bark from ‘special branch’, giving evidence. There are protesters more interested in pizza meal deals than protesting and secret agents who self-destruct. At the end of the show, the audience gets to vote on whether Mr Wolf is guilty or not. All the senior and middle syndicate students get a chance to participate or have a role backstage. Some other things we have a chance to do are painting backdrops, making props and being in the choir. Our school uses the ticket money toward paying for the microphones, lighting and technology to make the show happen. ‘What’s the Crime Mr Wolf?’ is on at Clifton Terrace School, Tuesday July 6 at 11am and 7pm.

Marist to meet Kahurangi in final Jonty Dine Kahurangi and Marist will square off in the Tasman Trophy final this weekend after both booked their berths with comfortable semi-final victories on Saturday. The uncanny run of close

finishes between Marist and Waimea ended as the defending champions saw off their rivals 3817 at Trafalgar Park. Marist was without inspirational captain Jacob Norris who was called up for Māori All Blacks duty. So fellow Mako, Taina Fox-

Matamua, took over the skipper's duties. Taina says, after so many recent meetings being decided by just a few points, it was satisfying to finally put their nemesis away in convincing fashion. "I think we owed them one of those. We know what they bring and we were just grateful to get the win and not a close one this time." The powerful number eight is excited about the showdown with Kahurangi next week as Marist chase a three-peat of titles. Marist was stripped in a custom jersey made to acknowledge its Pasifika community and Taina says they were given out in a special presentation on Friday night. “We are glad we could do the jersey proud, we have a big

Pacific background in our team and I don’t think we will take it off next week. So, hopefully, it does the trick again.” Tongan prop Teu Sami rumbled over for the first try of the semifinal but Waimea responded immediately in spectacular fashion as Macca Springer soared in the air to claim a high cross kick from Campbell Parata. Te Puoho Stephens only needed to fall on the ball as it squirted out of a scrum and over the line to give Marist a 17-10 lead. Errors crept into the game in the second spell but both sides continued to push the envelope in trying conditions. Another Waimea error led to Marist’s third try as Pino Maupese kicked ahead a loose ball and Vikena showed plenty of toe to win the race to the line. Waimea was left with a tall task to come back as Briggs’

third penalty put them trailing by 20 with just 12 remaining. Typical of this fixture, though, Waimea answered with a Mitch Barry try under the posts to offer some hope. It was soon quashed, however, with a rare mistake from Springer handing Manase Taufa the try that sealed the victory. In Motueka, table toppers Kahurangi led 29-8 against Central at halftime and went on to seal a 36-8 victory. Saturday’s final at Trafalgar Park will see the top seeds take on third seeds in what will be a showcase of Kahurangi’s dangerous backline and Marist’s powerful forward pack. The teams met only a few weeks ago with Marist prevailing 21-18 in a thriller. Tasman Trophy final Kahurangi vs Marist Saturday July 3 2.30pm Trafalgar Park

Midfielder Sophie Hart takes a hard tackle as Waimea Old Boys women had its dream of a three-peat ended at the hands of rivals Moutere in a pulsating final on Saturday. The see-sawing battle was brutal and enthralling with both sides producing plenty of bruising hits and some scintillating runs in difficult conditions at Trafalgar Park. Waimea had a chance to snatch a late victory, but Moutere survived to be crowned the 2021 women's Tasman Trophy champions, prevailing 10-6. Waimea front rower Anna Bradley was resolute in defeat. “I love playing against Moutere, I hate that we lost today but what a final, we can hold our heads up because we played a good game of rugby.” She says, despite the close loss, she came off Trafalgar Park smiling because it was a hard and fun contest. Kickboxing underdog takes out gold Jonty Dine Heading into his final bout at the National WAKO Kickboxing Championships, Murray Farquhar was a clear underdog. The Nelson fighter gave away a whopping 25kg to his opponent, who also heavily outweighed him in experience. Standing across the mat in Auckland was George Gericke, a 4th-degree black belt in karate, taekwondo and kickboxing. Further stacking the odds against him, Murray tore his calf muscle preventing him from putting full weight on one leg. However, Murray overcame the monumental challenge to claim gold in the veteran’s light contact and kick light divisions. Murray did not have an easy run to the gold. His semi-final opponent Corey Governor owns his own MMA gym in Palmerston North and has over a decade of fight experience. “It was a pretty hard and fast fight, but I was able to land the cleaner shots. He was throwing some bombs but I managed to block a few." Murray took out all three rounds for a unanimous win. His next bout did not go as smoothly, suffering the injury early in round one.

Murray Farquhar came away with a gold medal at the National WAKO Kickboxing Championships last weekend. Photo: Supplied. “I just came off the mat in an awkward way, it felt like a bad cramp. So, I just had to change my stance approach, be more elusive, pick my shots better and not get into a brawl.” The strategy paid off as Murray went on to pick up another unanimous decision. “I am over the moon. My goal was just to get involved and be a part of the event as it was the first one of its kind in New Zealand.” He says his coach Sallie McArdle was incredibly influential throughout the fights. “Sallie was awesome in my corner.” After limping away from the fight, the physio assessed Murray and told him he would be out of action for at least a month. “I want to get back into training tomorrow but I’ll be sure to look

after it.” He is eyeing up another competition later in the year where he hopes to make more history. “Now I have seen the calibre of fighters, I’m pretty excited.” Murray’s fight career began in Thailand while walking past a gym. He was drawn in by the sounds of shins thundering into pads. After requesting a session, he soon fell in love with the sport. Murray moved to Sydney 13 years ago but recently returned to Nelson in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. Looking to continue his career at Victory Boxing, it was there he learned of world champion Sallie McArdle’s kickboxing classes. “She has a huge amount of experience, has won multiple world titles and I wanted to learn from someone who has won multiple world titles. She is a hidden gem in Nelson.” He says Sallie’s input was imperative to both his and fellow Nelson fighter Sarah Randall’s success, with Sarah winning the senior division also against a far more experienced black belt. “For a little club in Nelson to come away with two national champions up against some established guys is pretty cool.”

Safety around underground boxes Are you one of the many people who have wondered “What are all the little black and grey boxes on the footpath/ side of the road …?” Nelson Weekly advertising consultant Reuben Dudley presents Jack Carmody with season tickets to the Mako after finishing second in the newspaper’s Super Rugby tipping competition. Photo: Jonty Dine.

Jack shows fellow code heads how it’s done Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Jack Carmody loves stats and rugby. So, the Nelson Weekly Super Rugby tipping competition was the perfect opportunity for the young code head to show off his skills. Jack is the youngest player to ever enter the competition and at just eight-years-old, had only one-third of the experience that his opposition possessed. However, Jack defied his age and, went on to finish second overall, just two points shy of the winner. Being that Jack was too young for the traditional runner-up prize of a dozen beers, he was rewarded for his efforts with tickets to all the Mako home

games this season. Jack's dad Mike says he thought it would be quite funny to see him up against local businessmen. “He is rugby mad so we thought we would give him a crack.” But there was nothing funny about Jack's approach. “He loves his stats, he was pretty serious, it was his main focus for the week.” Jack admits it was a bit daunting going up against much more experienced men. He wasn’t even able to watch games starting at 9pm as they would go past his bedtime. He says it was always exciting waking up to find out the results, while his friends thought it was cool seeing him in the paper and always near the top of the table. Several moments throughout the season stand out for Jack.

"I remember when everybody picked the Highlanders to win, but I picked the Chiefs and got it." Another standout was when he picked the Chiefs to beat his beloved Crusaders. Jack says it was a serious test of his allegiance. "I was still going for the Crusaders...kind of." Jack says he would generally go with his gut as opposed to his heart. He was not afraid to get amongst the banter either. When fellow competitor James Lash found himself on the losing end of a pick, Jack didn’t miss the chance to let him know about it. In a video sent to the email chain, Jack mocks the Placemakers general manager saying: 'Oh James, you picked the Highlanders, bummer!'

We have about 12,000 underground boxes on our network, most of them in urban areas. As they are generally in public spaces they sometimes get damaged when: z

vehicles accidentally run into them, causing the cover to loosen or crack

z

people drill holes or insert screws into them

z

some have their covers removed by people not authorised to do so.

These are all dangerous situations, as they can expose you to the live electrical parts inside the box and put you at risk of electrocution. If a box gets repeatedly damaged by vehicles, we will look at putting protective bollards around it. Underground boxes must be left alone and only networkapproved contractors are permitted to remove the covers. Putting screws into an underground box or drilling holes into one is extremely dangerous! If anything ever causes you to need to interact with a box please phone us. If you accidentally damage an underground box, or if you see one that has been damaged, let us know straight away by phoning our fault line 0800 508 100.

These are Network Tasman’s ‘underground boxes’. Kelsey to bring up century at Olympics

Black Sticks striker Kelsey Smith is set to make her 100th appearance for New Zealand at the Tokyo Olympics. Photo: Jonty Dine.

Netball: Prices Waimea Ahurei illustrated the gap between club and college after handily defeating Nelson College for Girls in the latest round of the Nelson Premier Netball Competition. The defending champions were too strong for a young college side which featured two year 13 players. Skipper Kim Curry says she was very proud of the performance her side put out against the might of Prices Ahurei. On court two, Jacks OPD avenged its 3129 loss earlier in the season with a relatively comfortable victory over Richmond, 4536. In the evening’s later game, Jack Magenta picked up its first premier win, defeating Stoke 7165.

old Nelsonian. “I’ve had no more than any other person. You just have to get through injuries, they aren’t something that’s going to break me.” Though the Olympic experience will no doubt be a lot different to Rio with Covid restrictions, Kelsey will hope one thing remains the same. “In the village there was a McDonald’s with free food. We didn’t do that until the last day but we had so many Big Macs.”

Football: Nelson Suburbs can seal their spot in the Southern League with an upset win over the unbeaten Cashmere Technical this weekend. Suburbs drew 3-all with Ferrymead Bays on Saturday with goals to Ed Sillars, Chester Gaskin and Ben Wright, keeping their qualification hopes alive. However, there are a few scenarios that can play out in the final round. Suburbs, Nomads, and Selwyn are all still fighting for the final two spots in the competition. Should Suburbs

Jonty Dine It’s been a long wait for Black Stick Kelsey Smith to bring up her 100th cap for New Zealand. The Nelson striker has had a wretched run of injuries and when she finally regained her fitness last year, sports around the globe came to a grinding halt. “Everyone stopped so it was fine, when it was just me and everyone else was playing I was a bit gutted.” Kelsey has played 99 games for the Black Sticks, her four most recent appearances coming in the series loss to Australia last month, the first internationals she has played in more than two years. Now, with the Olympics set to go ahead in Tokyo next month a year later than scheduled, Kelsey should finally bring up her century against Argentina on July 25. “I’m not too fussed about the number, I just like to play.” Kelsey will be playing in her second Olympic Games after making her debut in Rio in 2016. It has been a difficult couple of seasons for Kelsey who ruptured her ACL in a Pro League clash with the United States in March

2019. After a year of rehab, she would returned in February 2020 only for Covid-19 to curb her comeback. Kelsey says the lockdown was actually a bit of a blessing in disguise as she was able to use the time to rehab a niggling back injury. “I was just studying so had a bit of time to go for runs but it was quite hard to get motivated with no hockey at all.” Despite the adversity her career has faced, little fazes the 26-year-

be beaten this weekend, they need only reduce the damage as anything less than a 6-0 loss should see them safe.

Rugby: With an abundant stock of quality outside backs, Tima Faina'anuku has opted to leave the Tasman Mako and join the Manawatu Turbos. Mark Telea, Fetuli Paea, Will Jordan, David Havili, Sevu Reece and younger brother Leicester are all on the Mako books and though some will have All Black duties, Tima will take his talents to Palmerston North for the 2021 NPC.

Swimming: Tasman Swim Club member William Seymour (15) has been selected to participate in the Swimming New Zealand 2021 Tri-Series Tour which takes place from Monday July 12. William was invited to the series as part of the National Age Programme. Nelson South Swimming Club swimmer Finn Russ (14) has also been selected to participate in the 2021-22 National Age Programme. William has already enjoyed a successful 2021 season. He won gold in the 50m and 100m backstroke and silver in 50 and 100 freestyle at the National Age Group Championships in April, and has also broken three Swimming Nelson Marlborough age group records this season.
