Sacred Heart – About a Masterpiece
About a Masterpiece We consider the “For God So Loved the World” image to be the most significant piece of art we have published. It has reached many people in a very powerful way, and we continue to hear new stories about how it has influenced lives and touched hearts. We’d like to share a little of its significance and history with you. The original picture was in a centuries-old church in Europe that was slated for destruction. A priest from Michigan saved it and other pieces of art from this certain ruin and brought them to the United States. It then became a family heirloom and treasure for a young Catholic doctor and his family. As far as we can tell, the original image was painted in the 1700s by an unknown artist. The Latin inscription at the bottom reads, “Sic Deus Dilexit Mundum,” and is translated, “For God So Loved the World,” which comes from the scripture passage John 3:16. This beautiful image, which has strong resemblance to the Shroud of Turin, has been an inspiration for thousands of people since we began publishing it in 1997. Father Benedict Groeschel, CFR, Catholic author and speaker, has used it extensively in his books and meditations. Fr. Benedict currently lives with his community in New York City and works for the Archdiocese of New York. He tells the story of how angry, torn and sad he was on the afternoon of 9/11, when many of his friends and associates were killed in the World Trade Center attacks.
This image of the Sacred Heart, which hung in the monastery chapel, ministered deeply to him a message of forgiveness and mercy. Soon after, he used the image as the basis of a series of mediations in his book The Cross at Ground Zero. Fr. Benedict’s newest book, Tears of God, was written for all those who have suffered great sorrow or catastrophe in their lives, and for those close to such persons, who share their deep suffering. He again chose to use the image of the Sacred Heart (shown to the left on the cover of the book) because of the great impact it has had on his life and the lives of so many others. Fr. Benedict seeks to study catastrophes of all different kinds in relationship to our faith in Divine Providence, God’s goodness and mercy, and Christ’s suffering and death. The image of “For God So Loved the World” is especially powerful in helping us reflect upon each of these mysteries. We have published this masterpiece in a wide variety of sizes and formats, including holy cards for priests’ ordinations, eight-foot tall banners for churches and Catholic organizations, massive framed artwork and canvases, Tshirts, book covers, plaques, and greeting cards. We are proud to offer this image as one our favorites and best-sellers, and hope that it will continue to inspire a deep love in the hearts of those who look upon it.
