Students, Fans, Alumni,
On behalf of Northeast Mississippi Community College, welcome to the greatest institution in the United States!
Here at NEMCC, we have a tradition in all sports of exhibiting not only a championship atmosphere, but one of class, integrity, and professionalism. We are proud of the student/athletes that have chosen to attend Northeast. We are thankful each of you have chosen to attend this athletic event.
While our students are here, our goal is to provide opportunities of personal growth through cutting edge instruction in the classroom and athletic programs. Northeast recognizes that its primary commitment is to the education of our student-athlete.
Our vision is to develop one of the premier athletic programs in the nation. To that end, the completion of our Baseball/Softball complex was certainly a step in the right direction. In addition, the beginning of our Game, Set, Match capital giving campaign for our state of the art tennis complex shows our continued commitment to excellence.
Recently Northeast was recognized as an Apple Distinguished School. Receiving this coveted honor exhibits to the world our commitment to cutting edge technology within our instructional process.
I hope you will have time prior to or after this athletic event to walk or drive around our campus and get a small glance at what we have to offer. You are welcome to visit anytime with our students, faculty, and staff.
We are happy to have each of you as part of the Northeast family. Please feel free to contact me should the need ever arise. As you leave campus after this event, we wish you the very best and safe travels.

Jamarcus Smith had one more historic ac complishment to make before officially ending his tenure with the Northeast Mississippi Community College football program.
Smith has repeated as a College Sports Informa tion Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic AllAmerica® selection as part of the College Division men’s at-large team.
The Saltillo native became Northeast’s inaugural CoSIDA Academic All-America® recipient in 2021. Smith is consequently the first student-athlete in school history to capture this award in consecutive years.
Smith was an arts and humanities major at Northeast with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.66 on a 4.0 scale. He transferred to the University of West Alabama to continue his career on the gridiron following the fall 2021 semester.
He was one of just 16 CoSIDA Academic AllAmerica® winners from the College Division, which includes all two-year institutions, Canadian universi ties and any four-year school in the United States that is not a member of the NCAA or the NAIA.
“I’m very glad that I could contribute to this great school,” said Smith. “I appreciate every one that’s helped me on my journey. I really enjoyed every
thing here. Working hard is what we were taught so I stayed on top of my work.”
He is the only player ever to lead the Tigers in tackling for three straight seasons. It is a feat that will likely never happen again as Smith took advantage of an additional year of eligibility due to the world wide coronavirus pandemic.
Smith concluded his final campaign at Northeast with 74 tackles. He had six games with eight or more stops, including a season-best 14 takedowns dur ing a victory by the Tigers at Coahoma Community College.
He received Fall All-America distinction from the
Rivals recruiting network publication JCGridiron as well as all-conference honors for helping Northeast finish as the division runner-up during the abbrevi ated 2020 campaign.
The 6-1, 205-pound linebacker racked up 58 stops along with a team-high eight tackles for loss that year. Smith also accounted for two forced fumbles, two sacks and an interception.
“Jamarcus is a very intelligent football player, but even a better person overall,” Tigers head coach Greg Davis said. “He’s got a very, very bright future ahead of him. He put a lot of time and effort into his class work. This is very well deserved.”
His cumulative stats at Northeast include 221 takedowns, 20.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, three blocked kicks and two interceptions over the course of 24 total contests.
Smith averaged 9.2 stops per outing with nine double-digit tackling performances. He posted a career-high 18 tackles during a matchup at East Mis sissippi Community College as a freshman.
He was twice decorated with scholastic accolades from both the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) as well.

NORTHEAST MISSISSIPPI COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOOTBALL 5
TIGERS BOAST THREE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK THROUGH FIRST HALF OF SEASON
The Northeast Mississippi Community Col lege football program has benefitted from several outstanding individual performances through the midway point of the 2022 campaign.
Three Tigers have earned player of the week honors from the Mississippi Associa tion of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) for their contributions to the team.
Guy Gillespie was the first. He received special team accolades from the MACCC and the National Junior College Athletic Associa tion (NJCAA) after Northeast defeated thenseventh ranked Hinds Community College in its season opener.
The Booneville High School alumnus was true on a pair of extra points following a touchdown catch by Kortlen Wilfawn in the first quarter and a pick-six from Steven Edwards midway through the final period.
Gillespie drilled his first career field goal from 21 yards out with 3:48 remaining prior to halftime. It concluded Northeast’s longest drive of the night, which covered 67 yards over 10 plays.
He extended the Tigers’ advantage to two possessions near the end of the third quarter with a 32-yard field goal. It came shortly after his long snapper Wilfawn recovered a muffed punt by the Eagles.
“It’s a great honor. I’m so excited,” Gil lespie said. “It felt really good to see them go in. I just hope I can carry it out and do what I need to do throughout the season. It just comes down to technique and repeatability.
“Every day in practice I make sure every thing is the exact same every single kick, every step and every follow through. I’m in the weight room every day and kicking three to four times a week.”
Gillespie also successfully handled all of the kickoff duties for Northeast. The average starting field position for Hinds following his five total kickoffs was its own 25 yard line.
Kenny Byrd added to the Tigers’ pile of awards one week later. He received defensive player of the week from both the MACCC and the NJCAA following Northeast’s home opener against Pearl River Community College.
The Coastal Carolina (S.C.) University transfer recorded a game-high 17 tackles, including 11 solo takedowns. It is still the most tackles by any Tiger in a single contest so far this year.
Byrd’s first stop came just two offensive plays into the matchup. He had four tackles during the Wildcats’ opening drive of the second quarter, which ended in a turnover on downs at the one-yard line.
He added his inaugural sack in a blackand-gold uniform with less than four min utes left in the game that forced Pearl River to punt the ball back to Northeast.
“I’ve put in a lot of work,” Byrd said. “Not really a lot of people believed in me, so I just grinded the whole offseason and I’ve came back and shown people what I can really do.
“Coach (Cedric) Shell has taught me a lot over here. Having a relentless effort is the most important thing at the linebacker position.
You’ve always got to keep your motor going.”
Fellow linebacker Triston Newson fol lowed in Byrd’s fooststeps by gaining MACCC Defensive Player of the Week distinction after the Tigers’ rivalry affair at Itawamba Community College.
Newson recorded his third consecutive double-digit tackling performance with a game-high 13 versus the Indians. He had six solo stops and seven assisted takedowns.
The Independence High School graduate forced two takeaways during the fourth quarter. He had a diving interception and also returned a fumble 21 yards into Itawamba territory.
Newson had an impressive sequence of four consecutive tackles early in the fourth quarter that eventually led to a punting situ ation by the Indians.
“This (award) is most definitely momen tum for me,” said Newson. “The other line backers help me out with a lot of the things we do. I don’t skip reps and try to make sure I’m ready for each game. Staying focused on the field is my main priority.”
Both Byrd and Newson are near the top of the charts in terms of tackling. As of Friday, September 30, Newson led the country with 56 stops while Byrd was in a three-way tie for third with 50 takedowns.
Newson’s recruitment has particularly blossomed over the last several weeks. He has recently picked up offers from the Uni versity of Colorado, the University of South Alabama, Old Dominion (Va.) University and Jacksonville State (Ala.) University.
