The Few. The Proud. The Chosen. One of the most important things for a coaching staff is recruiting. The old saying that “many are called but few are chosen” is something the Tiger football coaches know all too well. After all is said and done and they have signed all the in-district and in-state kids they are allotted...it is time to call on the out-of-district and out-of-state athletes to finalize their roster. These finalists are known as the chosen. These recruits get the privilege of playing junior college football in the state of Mississippi along with their comrades -- who have the honor of being from the Magnolia State -- while the fans get the privilege of watching both squads perform on the gridiron. In addition, the Tigers have plenty of these “chosen” performers on their 2010 squad. First up...the men from just across the state line -- the athletes from Alabama, who decided to bring their talents over to Northeast in 2010. Players like freshman defensive backs Deion Belue and Jonathan Bates, both from Tuscumbia, Ala., and freshman defensive back Ryan Jones (Muscle Shoals, Ala.), freshman defensive end Jerryn Napier (Muscle Shoals, Ala.), sophomore defensive tackle KyVari Bolden (Hoover, Ala.), sophomore defensive lineman Anthony Payne (Leroy, Ala.), and freshman running back Jamarcus Goodloe (Leighton, Ala.), These Alabama recruits have played a big part of the Tigers’ success on the gridiron this season on both sides of the ball. On the defensive side, Belue, Jones and Bates patrol the secondary like it is their own, while Napier, Bolden and Payne lock down the front line and because opposing quarterbacks havoc. In addition, on the offensive side fans have the thunderous running back in Goodloe, who seems to enjoy plowing over

defenders on his way to the end zone. “It’s what they (the defenders) make me do,” Goodloe said. “They always go for my legs so I have to just lower my head and get the tough yards.” Perhaps the most talented out of the Alabama boys is Belue. Belue adds another dimension to the squad with his ability to return punts. The Tuscumbia, Alabama native currently leads the Mississippi Association of Community & Junior Colleges (MACJC)/Region 23 statistics with 178 yards on six attempts averaging 39 yards per carry. Belue’s longest return of the year came in week seven in the Tigers’ 31-17 Homecoming win over Coahoma where he weaved his way 80 yards to paydirt. “My teammates just told me, ‘It is going to be there, trust us and go for it,” Belue said. “I just took off, made my cuts and took it to the house.” Belue was named the Region 23 “Special Teams Player of the Week” for his week seven performance. Secondly, the play makers -- who have no doubt made their presence known on the field this year -- starting with the two Atlanta, Ga., natives wide receiver Josh Jarboe and defensive back Brynden Trawick. Jarboe, a transfer from Troy University, opened the season up on fire catching two touchdowns in the first quarter against East Central helping the Tigers open the season with a 34-6. Jarboe currently ranks at the number four spot in the MACJC/Region 23 stat report in the individual receiving category with 30 catches totaling 389 yards with four scores -- after playing in just six games this season. Jarboe sat out week six with a separated shoulder. “It is a little bit different. I had to get used to being double teamed all the time,” Jarboe said. “It’s something I wasn’t used to.” Trawick transferred to Northeast from Michigan State University during the spring semester, and has become a mainstay in the secondary for Coach Jeff Carter.

Tiger Trawick is the safety to have in the box-and-reads and diagnoses plays while closing in quickly to deliver big hits for Northeast. Trawick is an open field tackler with great speed and a nose for the ball. “When I am on the field, I try to have a rentlentless mentality,” Trawick said. “I try to swarm to the ball when the ball is in the air or when the offensive player has the ball.” His nose for the ball was well apparent in week six against the Holmes Community College Bulldogs where Trawick made an interception and returned it 67 yards to the house in helping the Tigers finish off the Bulldogs 35-20. Finally yet importantly...is wide receiver/quarterback Jonathan Johnson, a freshman from West Helena, Ark. Although fans might not see Johnson leading in any statistical category, his athleticism can be easily noticed when he is on the field. Johnson has speed running a 4.4-second 40-yard dash and has recently been named as the number two quarterback for the Tigers. Johnson can play about anywhere on the field and he is featured in the Northeast “Wildcat” offensive formation. “It is all right, I have to get my form back where it was,” Johnson said. “That’s basically what I have been doing all my life, running the Wildcat.” All these players understand their roles and responsibilities as being among the few...the proud...and the chosen. That is one of the reasons why the Tigers have been so successful this season. With the combination of in-district, in-state talent with the out-of-district, out-of-state talent like Northeast has managed to do in 2010 make a deadly combination forms.

Football Northeast-Copiah-Lincoln History Last five meetings

2004 -- Northeast, 45-14 1999 -- Copiah-Lincoln, 17-0 1998 -- Copiah-Lincoln, 14-13 1997 -- Copiah-Lincoln, 23-0 1996 -- Copiah-Lincoln, 19-6

Series: Copiah-Lincoln, 14-5. Notes:

Northeast and Copiah-Lincoln’s last encounter was cancelled due to Hurricane Katrina in 2005 when the Tigers went a perfect 7-0 during the regular season. Northeast captured the last meeting between the two teams 45-14 in 2004 but the Tigers last win before the 2004 victory came in 1980 as Northeast knocked off Copiah-Lincoln 16-6. The Tigers and the Wolves have only met once since the turn of the century thanks to the cancellation in 2005 however NE and Co-Lin faced off every year during the 1990s except for the 1992 and 1993 seasons.
