Tiger Player Feature: Leatherwood’s Leadership:
Sophomore McAuther Leatherwood stands an imposing six-feet, four-inches tall and weighs 330 pounds. With his trademark flattop haircut, the Tiger defensive lineman gains two more inches in stature. However, as much of an imposing figure Leatherwood is off the field, the Ripley native is much more imposing to the opposition on the field. Forth, whenever Leatherwood steps onto the gridiron, he has already won the game. Leatherwood, who played his senior season at Falkner High School in Tippah County, was going to hang up his cleats for the last time following his final high school game with the Eagles but that’s when the opportunity presented itself. “I was going to hang my hat up on playing football,” Leatherwood said. “Coach (Ricky) Smither gave me the opportunity to come up here and play football and I saw the opportunity and came running.” Running is a lot of what Leatherwood did in high school because coming from a small school such as Falkner, players had to play on both offense and defense. Leatherwood was no exception and when not manning his defensive line spot for the Eagles, Leatherwood lowered into a stance as the Eagles fullback on offense. That experience has led Leatherwood to become what he is today. Not only did Leatherwood learn the mindset of the offensive player, he also garnered the knowledge that he would rather hit people than be hit. “It was different,” Leatherwood said of his offensive foray. “You are used to hitting people, now you are getting hit.” With that mindset, Leatherwood has dedicated himself to the cause and has gone from a person that was given a chance to make the team to a team captain that his teammates turn to when times get rough. “That’s why when we have a bad practice, you have to come in and say, ‘I will tote this team on my back. I am going to run to the ball and I am going to do this.’ and then once they see me doing it then that’s when they are going to start doing it,” Leatherwood said. “That’s when we see someone get down – we put the wood 6

on our shoulders and we tote the load and we tote their load and they will catch up sooner or later.” Through the first three games of his sophomore year, Leatherwood has been literally laying the wood to his opponents as well as figuratively toting the wood for his teammates. Leatherwood has accounted for 13 tackles on the season, two tackles for a loss and a quarterback sack. Leatherwood’s leadership has enabled the Tiger defense to rise to past glory and become the league’s best defensive squad. Northeast’s defense has only allowed 622 yards through the first three games of the season and lead the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC)/Region XXIII standings with a 207.3 yards per game average. Northeast also leads the pack in pass defense allowing opponents to just 94 yards a game through the air – 50 yards less than the nearest defense in the region. It’s thanks to that defensive effort that the Tigers are off to their best start (2-1) since finishing the Katrina-shortened regular season 7-0 in 2005. Leatherwood not only beats opponents with pure muscle. The sophomore industrial engineering student carries a 3.0 grade point average in the classroom and it is that mindset that allows Leatherwood to beat his opponents before they even step on the field. Leatherwood’s classroom work not only shows the preparation that the engineering student puts in off the field but is a foreshadowing of what the 6-4, 330-pound man does to prepare for games and that comes from the work ethic Leatherwood learned from his position counterpart his freshman year – John Brown (Lakeland, Fla.) who signed with the University of Tennessee. “He was my mentor. I stuck by him and learned from him …he was the best and a hard worker,” Leatherwood said. “He stayed after practice to run and that’s what I have in my mind, that’s what you have to do to be great. You have to strive to be the best.” Northeast and Leatherwood’s drive to be the best was what got the defensive lineman through the boiling southern summers when the heat indexes reached above 115 degrees and is the moti-

Tiger vation that the Tigers carry through the season today. “We talk about what we went through in condition in spring and summer. It was 100 something degrees out there,” Leatherwood said. “We felt each other’s pain. When we were going through the heat and running bleachers, it has started to pay off, cause now, we are seeing WHY we did it.” The end result for Leatherwood will be earning a degree and continuing to play football wherever that may be but it is his time at Northeast that has helped shape the big man for years to come. “Winning and losing shows that life is not perfect, you are not perfect,” Leatherwood said. “It shows you who you really are as an individual and makes you a man. Everything is not going to be like a cake. You aren’t going to always be able to eat the cake. You are going to have to bake it sometimes. You have to do things to get there like lifting weights, running, conditioning. It pays off. It helps you mature.”
