Jeremy Spikner: An interception machine As the old football adage would say, “Jeremy Spikner has a nose for the football.” In his first year with the Tigers, Spikner finished second in the Mississippi Association of Community/Junior Colleges (MACJC) with four interceptions and has led the Tiger defense to even higher standards this year. Spikner, a 6-0 200-pound defensive back from Olive Branch, prepped at DeSoto Central High School before making the trek to Northeast in 2010. However, it was during that first year as a Tiger, that Spikner put the MACJC on notice. In back-to-back games against Mississippi Delta Community College and Holmes Community College, Spikner collected four interceptions – two against each opponent and helped make a name for himself in the league. “This year they haven’t thrown it to my side that much because I think they heard about me last year,” Spikner said. “Last year they did. It really has just evened out.” Spikner may have been the beneficiary of misinformation as teams tried to avoid Deion Belue (Tuscumbia, Ala.) and underestimated the DeSoto Central alumni. Spikner doesn’t seem to mind and will keep doing his job to help the Northeast defense keeps shutting down teams as it has done in the first two games of the year. In two games, Northeast’s defense has scored 14 points, came away with six interceptions and limited Southwest’s high-power rushing game to just 86 yards of total offense in a 32-9 decision in front of a packed Tiger Stadium on September 8. “It feels great,” Spikner said. “We are stopping everybody.” Spikner knows that to reach the top of the MACJC, it will take a lot of work but the sophomore is willing to put in the hours. “Last year we had a good season and this year we are looking to go to state,” Spikner said. Spikner, who was a three-sport star at DeSoto Central, knows the dedication that one needs to put into winning but the sophomore has a secret weapon. The former three-sport start uses his previous sports to excel on the gridiron. “Basketball helps you speed and quick wise,” Spikner said. “Where as track was long distance

running and ability to be on the field longer.” Spikner was quick to give credit to his coaches that helped to propel him to a good season in his first year and an even better one during his sophomore campaign. “I have learned a lot from my coaches and my defensive back coach,” Spikner said. “They put me in the right position and it is up to me to make the plays.” Making the plays is what Spikner has become accustom to doing and none was more evident than Spikner’s performance against Holmes in 2010. Spikner, who was sick before the Holmes contest, had one of his best games as a Tiger against the Bulldogs. “I think it was the road trip that we took going down there,” Spikner said. “I just had a need to go off that game. I believe it was just in me to come out and beat Holmes.” Not only did Spikner come away with a pair of interceptions in the contest but the Olive Branch native’s second interception of the night helped to quell a late third quarter drive by Holmes and set Northeast up for the deciding score. In addition to a pair of interceptions against the Bulldogs, Spikner also had three solo tackles and a fumble recovery in leading Northeast to a 3520 win that included 20 points in the second half by the Tigers. Spikner also knows that any work on the field
Notes: Northeast has only played four teams more times than the Tigers have played the Bulldogs and Mississippi Delta has the lead on the series by virtue of being on the 2011 schedule earlier. Northeast has battled Itawamba and Northwest 51 times during its 52-year football history and taken on East Mississippi 50 times. Northeast and Mississippi Delta marked its 47th meeting on September 15 with Northeast and Holmes meeting for the 47th time tonight. must be prepped by time in the classroom and the Northeast sophomore has already made the commitment to excelling off the field as well. “School work comes first,” Spikner said. “I do my work there first then come out here.” Spikner knows that is what has to be done to be successful but it was the Northeast charm that got the DeSoto Central grad to come join the Tigers. “I visited down here and I liked the environment,” Spikner said. “Coach (Brad) Boyette had a lot to do with it.” However, Spikner wants to see even more of the Northeast environment. “Come to every game,” said Spikner, “and be watching.” Because one only knows when Spikner and the Northeast Tigers will electrify Tiger Stadium once again.
