BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Students, Fans, Alumni,

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

On behalf of Northeast Mississippi Community College, welcome to the greatest institution in the United States!

Here at NEMCC, we have a tradition in all sports of exhibiting not only a championship atmosphere, but one of class, integrity, and professionalism. We are proud of the student/athletes that have chosen to attend Northeast. We are thankful each of you have chosen to attend this athletic event.

While our students are here, our goal is to provide opportunities of personal growth through cutting edge instruction in the classroom and athletic programs. Northeast recognizes that its primary commitment is to the education of our student-athlete.

Our vision is to develop one of the premier athletic programs in the nation. To that end, the completion of our Baseball/Softball complex was certainly a step in the right direction. In addition, the beginning of our Game, Set, Match capital giving campaign for our state of the art tennis complex shows our continued commitment to excellence.

Recently Northeast was recognized as an Apple Distinguished School. Receiving this coveted honor exhibits to the world our commitment to cutting edge technology within our instructional process.

I hope you will have time prior to or after this athletic event to walk or drive around our campus and get a small glance at what we have to offer. You are welcome to visit anytime with our students, faculty, and staff.

We are happy to have each of you as part of the Northeast family. Please feel free to contact me should the need ever arise. As you leave campus after this event, we wish you the very best and safe travels.

Sincerely,

TIGER BASKETBALL COACHING STAFF

ATHLETIC SUPPORT STAFF

Make plans to return to historic Bonner Arnold Coliseum next weekend for the second annual Harvey Childers Classic hosted by the Northeast Mississippi Community College men’s basketball team.

The tournament is named in honor of Childers, who guided the Tigers to a 192-34 record including five North Division titles, one state title and three Region 23 championships over the course of seven seasons.

Childers parlayed those three Region 23 championships into three National Tournament appearances, taking the Tigers to the NJCAA National Championship game in 1988-89 with a 23-3 record.

The Tiger mentor capped his career in 1991-92 when the Tigers went 30-5, won the region and advanced to the National Tournament. Childers had

the Tigers ranked as high as No. 3 during his final season.

Joining the Tigers in Booneville are fellow Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) member Northwest Mississippi Community College, Missouri State University-West Plains and first-time opponent Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas.

NORTHEAST HOSTING FIFTY-YEAR WOMEN’S BASKETBALL REUNION

The future of the Northeast Mississippi Community College athletic department changed for the better 50 years ago.

Women’s basketball was reinstated by Northeast during the 1973-74 school year. The sport was discontinued by each of the two-year institutions across the Magnolia State some 17 years earlier.

Northeast is hosting a special reunion for that historic group of Lady Tigers on Thursday, December 5 as part of its non-conference basketball doubleheader against Itawamba Community College.

Refreshments will be available beginning at 4 p.m. inside Bonner Arnold Coliseum. Attendees will form the run-out line for the current edition of the Lady Tigers prior to the 5:30 p.m. tipoff versus their rivals.

The team will be publicly honored between the women’s and men’s games. They will each receive a commemorative piece of the original maple wood gymnasium floor, which was replaced over the summer.

Women’s basketball became Northeast’s fifth intercollegiate sport at the time along with baseball, football, men’s basketball and co-ed tennis. There was also an all-female cheer squad just as there is today.

The number of sports has ballooned to 12 since then to include men’s and women’s cross country, men’s golf, softball and volleyball. Tennis was split into separate men’s and women’s programs in the 1990s.

The addition of women’s basketball also opened the

Tigers were Cynthia Barmer of Glen, Teresa Brawner of Corinth, Shirley Hall of New Albany, Janie Ham of Iuka, Cathy Hellums of Falkner, Regina Keenum of New Albany, Sherry Leggett of Glen, Sue Love of Falkner, Marina Pearson of New Albany,

head coach. He was inducted into the Northeast Sports Hall of Fame as part of its class of 2018. Several individuals associated with the team will be recognized as well. They include scoreboard operator Ray Cozort, manager Jo Drewery, public address

announcer and scorebook keeper Jim Lamb, chaperone Betty Lothenore plus bus driver

The Lady Tigers won their first six games that season, including a 58-53 victory at Meridian Community College in their inaugural contest on November 6, 1973. Ham and Love went on to become All-State selections. Former Northeast English instructor and assistant coach Dr. Anne Cross is organizing the reunion.
