Ford Athletic Director, NEMCC
Athletic Director Ricky Ford
Former Northeast women’s basketball coach Ricky Ford left his “built Ford tough” mark on many Lady Tiger teams since coming to Northeast in 1981. After the 2010-11 season, Ford decided to hang it up and went into his victory lap through the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC). On March 7, 2011 Ford announced he was stepping down as women’s basketball coach at Northeast. Ford ended his career at Northeast with an overall record of 588-226. While wins have not been on the coach’s mind, the satisfaction of a job well done kept Ford going at Northeast for 30 seasons. Building success on and off the court was what Ford did since coming to Northeast Mississippi Junior College in 1981. During his 30-year coaching career, Ford only had four sub-.500 seasons and the first of those did not come until his 2002-03 Lady Tigers finished 11-12 but even it finished as the North Division runner-up. Within five years since taking over the Lady Tiger program in 1981, Ford had transformed the Lady Tigers into national title contenders that included a national runner-up finish in 1986 and a national championship in 1987. During Ford’s illustrious career, the Lady Tiger basketball coach led his team to 15 North Division titles, nine MACJC State Champion6
ships with 6 (six) of those state championships being consecutive and three Region XXIII crowns while leading the Lady Tigers to the National Junior College Athletic Association’s (NJCAA) national basketball tournament on three separate occasions. Ford went to the national tournament a final time in 2005-06 as the Lady Tigers captured the North Division, MACJC State and Region XXIII titles and finished the season as the nation’s No. 21-ranked team after appearing in the national event in Salina, Kan. Following his final national tournament appearance, Ford was honored as the Division I, District O, Region XXIII Coach of the Year - an award that is given to the head coach of each of the 16 regional championship teams. One year after his national tournament appearance, Ford continued his success in the MACJC as the veteran mentor led the Lady ti-
gers back to the Region XXIII tournament for a twenty-fifth straight year as the Lady Tigers once again captured the North Division - their fourth straight division title - and successfully defended their 2006 MACJC State Title. Ford was appointed Dean of Student Services at the beginning of the 2011 spring semester following the retirement of Kenneth Pounders, and is currently in his sixth year as athletic director for the college. His responsibilities as athletic director has Ford overseeing the day-to-day operations of an athletic department that features eight varsity sports, an all-female cheerleading squad and also coordinates the annual MACJC All-Star Football Classic game that is held each year in December. Prior to coming to Northeast, Ford built successful basketball programs at Booneville High School coaching the Lady Blue Devils for four years and the Blue Devils for a pair of seasons. Ford’s overall careen record stands at 676253 and carries a winning percentage of 72.7 percent into retirement. An alumnus of Northeast and former Tiger basketball player under Kenneth Lindsey, Ford earned a bachelor’s degree from Mississippi State University and a master’s degree from the University of Mississippi. Ricky and his wife LuAnne have four children, Aaron, Lauren, Suzanne, and Ben.

Head Coach Ricky Smither
Ricky Smither returns for his fourth year at the helm for the Tigers football program entering into the 2011 season. In his first year as head coach, Smither’s overall record was 1-8 however, he was able to improve to 2-6 overall in 2009 with three of the six losses going into extra periods. One of the biggest wins for Smither came in a 28-21 victory over Itawamba Community College in September of 2009. However, in 2010, Smither proved that he was the man for the job as the Tiger football continued to get better as his team posted its twelfth winning season in the college’s 51year football history when Smither’s troops finished with a 5-4 overall record and a 4-2 mark in the Mississippi Association of Community/ Junior Colleges (MACJC) North Division in 2010. Northeast’s 4-2 mark in the North Division helped the Tigers finish in a tie for second place in the ultra competitive North Division. Smither helped Northeast garnered national attention during week six of the season after the Tigers were able to knock off defending MACJC State Champion East Mississippi 49-42 in a shootout in Scooba where Tiger running back Jaquise Cook (Ripley) ran for 267 yards and four scores against the Lions. Cook was awarded the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Player of the Week honors following his week six performance. In addition to posting the team’s first winning season since 2005, the Tiger football team also captured the attention of the national media
when Northeast was included in the NJCAA National Top 20 Football Poll for the week of October 19, 2010 at No. 18 after the Tigers opened up the season 5-2. Smither’s journey to commanderin-chief for NEMCC first presented itself back on July 3, 2008 when he became the college’s 13th head football coach in school history. Smither began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Delta State University in 1995, later accepting a coaching position at Cleveland (Miss.) High School in 1997. He made the move to community college coaching in 1998, joining the staff at Coahoma Community College. From 1999-2006, Smither enjoyed stints at East Side High School (Miss.), H.L. Bourgeois High School (Louisiana), while also working at the Division-I level as an assistant coach at Mississippi Valley State University (2002-04). Smither came on board at Northeast as assistant football coach, coaching the offensive line, in February 2007, before Smither accepting the job as the Tigers head coach. Smither enjoyed success as the Tigers’ offensive line coach. His first offensive line group at North-
east sported two four-year college signees: Reggie Wade (Jacksonville State) and Greg Magnifico (Belhaven). Some of his most recent players to move on were standouts like defensive tackle John Brown, who signed with the University of Tennessee, and safety LaDarrius Madden along with offensive lineman DeMarkus Underwood who both signed to play for the University of Troy, while another safety John Ware inked with the University of North Alabama, and wide-out Josh Jarboe signed with Arkansas State. Smither graduated from Delta State University with a Master’s in Education. Ricky and his wife Lynn have two children; Russ and Kaitlyn.

Defensive Coordinator Jeff Carter
Jeff Carter enters his second year as the Tigers’ defensive coordinator/ defensive backs coach after leading the Tiger defense to top rankings in 2010. Carter’s stingy defense ranked fifth -- out of the 14 MACJC community colleges last season -- in rushing defense, only allowing 126 yards per game on the ground while the Tigers were also ranked number four in passing yards per game (ypg) only allowing 163 ypg. In additon, Carter’s defense forced 16 turnovers while two of his players finished in the top ten for total tackles and total interceptions in 2010. Before coming to Northeast in 2010, Carter served as Itawamba’s offensive coordinator and helped lead the Indians to the playoffs in four of his final five seasons and kept the Indian offense atop the rankings. Under Carter’s offensive leadership, Itawamba’s football team became one of only four programs in the state of Mississippi to qualify for the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) playoffs in four of the last five years. At Itawamba, Carter gave up his defensive passion to help the Indi8
ans on the offensive side of the ball. In 2005, Carter led the Indians to a top five finish in offense and a 6-1 mark before posting back-to-back 7-2 records as the Indian offense continued to shine. Prior to joining the Itawamba coaching staff, Carter was a pharmaceutical sales representative with Astra Zeneca and Sepracor but the Ole Miss graduate has spent most of his professional career on the sidelines. Beginning in 1996-1998, Carter roamed the sidelines at Tupelo High School as defensive coordinator and strength coordinator before jumping to the junior college ranks in February 1998. During Carter’s two years with the Golden Wave, Tupelo’s
defense rated as the top ranked defense in the state of Mississippi. Carter got his first taste of junior college football as the defensive coordinator for Northwest Mississippi Community College leading the Rangers to the North Division championship and a berth in the Mineral Water Bowl during the 1998 season. In his final season for the Rebels, Carter was honored as the secondever Chucky Mullins Memorial Courage Award recipient in 1991. The three-year Rebel starter was the first person to don Chucky Mullins’ No. 38 following Mullins’ passing in May 1991. Carter and his wife, Rachelle have two boys Jacob and Justin.

Offensive Line Coach Brad Boyette
Brad Boyette’s 2011 coaching year will make his ninth year as a Tiger coach where he has spent time prowling the side lines for Northeast. Boyette spent his first four years from 2003-2006 coaching the offensive line but made the move to defense in 2007 to orchestrate the Tiger defense. In 2010 Boyette moved back to the offensive side of the ball as the offensive line coach and will man that station again in 2011. Before getting the call to travel to Booneville, Boyette coached at Horn Lake High School where he was the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Boyette helped coach that offense in 2002 that led the state in scoring and yards per game. During the 2003-2006 seasons, Boyette’s offensive lines played a major role in the transformation of a traditionally conservative Tiger offense into one of the most potent attacks in the state. During the 2006 season, the Tigers ranked tenth in the country in total offense, racking up 399 yards per game. A Holly Springs native, Boyette also coached at Olive Branch High School for five years under the legendary Leslie Pool and at Holly 8
Springs High School. A tireless worker, Boyette has sent many offensive linemen on to the next level, including first team AllState selections Hollis Hoskins (Arkansas Tech) and Antezdra Thigpen
(North Alabama). Boyette is a graduate of the University of Mississippi. Boyette and his wife, the former Lee Braddock of Southaven, have three children; Lara, Asa, and Gabi.

Defensive Line Coach Travis Macon
A former Northeast Tiger football player will hold down the defensive line coaching position again in 2011 for head coach Ricky Smither. After coaching the offensive line in 2008, Macon moved over the defensive side of the ball in 2009 and will look to continue his defensive tactics in 2011. This will be Coach Macon’s first season as a fulltime coach after being promoted over the summer of 2011. Travis Macon, a native of Starkville, Miss., and graduate of Starkville High School (SHS), played football under the direction of head coach Chuck Fran during his time at SHS. During his high school career, Macon helped the Yellow Jackets win back to back state titles from 1995-97. After graduating high school, Macon moved on to Northeast Mississippi Community College as a student-athlete where he played football for head coach Laurin Collins from 1998-99. Macon then transferred to the University of Mississippi where he played offensive tackle for the Rebels from 2000-02 for head coach David Cutcliffe. Macon helped the Rebels to an appearance in the Music City Bowl in 2000. After his playing career at Ole Miss, Macon eventually decided to begin his coaching career at Northeast in the fall of 2008. During his first year as a student-assistant, Macon coached the offensive line that sent two offensive linemen to four-year institutions, Daryl Petty (Northwestern Oklahoma State University) and Heath Blount (University of South Alabama). Macon is married to Deimara and they have three children, Haleih, Brian, and Ambrielle. 10

Cheerleading Coach Jennifer Johnson
Jennifer Johnson bounced her way into being the Northeast Mississippi Community College cheerleading coach in late October 2008. Johnson, who has been involved cheerleading for the majority of her lifetime, started her cheer career as one of 15 cheerleaders at J. Sterling Morton East High School in Ciero, Ill., where the student population was made up of more than 5,800 students. Following graduation, Johnson and her family moved to Booneville with Johnson eventually joining the Itawamba Community College Indianette dance team before coming back to Prentiss County and Northeast. After graduating from the University of Mississippi in May 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, Johnson joined the staff at Olive Branch Middle School where she was the seventh grade language arts instructor and in charge of 24 eighth grade cheerleaders her first year. Johnson rose to the top of the cheerleading ranks when she took the New Site High School cheerleading squad to a second place finish in the Mississippi High School Activities Association’s State Cheerleading Competition in 2005. Johnson pushed the New Site cheerleaders to a second place finish in the Universal Cheerlead-
ing Association’s (UCA) Dixie Championship Regional earning the Lady Royals a berth in the 2006 UCA High School Nationals in Orlando, Fla., in 2006. Johnson’s team turned in a 26-place performance in the national competition and earned a superior squad rating. Johnson decided to take time off from cheerleading to take care of her baby boy after almost two years at New Site but the spirit was still there and when the position opened at Northeast in the fall 2008, Johnson bounded at the chance. During her time in northeast Mississippi, Johnson has also taught at Baldwyn Middle School and coached cheerleading squads at Marietta Elementary School. Johnson led the Marietta Lady Raiders to a third place showing in both 2003 and 2004 and
received the Most Improved squad at cheerleading camp. Johnson also sponsors her own cheerleading gymnasium ‘ Northeast Mississippi Academy of Cheerleading’ that opened in September 2004.

“TIGERS”
Arnold
When Northeast was founded in 1948, Bonner Arnold served as physical education instructor, men’ basketball coach and athletic director. Arnold and legendary University of Kentucky Wildcat men’s basketball coach Adolph Rupp were friends and as a result of this friendship and the success of the Kentucky basketball program, Arnold wanted the school’s athletic teams to sport a similar nickname. “Fighting Tigers” was adopted as the school’s mascot. Later, the school’s athletic program grew to include men’s and women’s varsity sports. “Fighting” was dropped and the teams became known as the “Tigers” and “Lady Tigers.”
North shuts out South in All-Star contest Northern victory leads to 18-17-2 series advantage
Mississippi’s annual junior college all-star football classic went along historical lines in the thirty-seventh showing at Tiger Stadium in Booneville Saturday, December 4. With the series tied 17-17-2, both sides squared off for the first 56 minutes before the North was able to break free and capture the lead in the series with a 16-0 win. Brandon Lawrence’s (Northwest) 20-yard interception return for a touchdown gave the North a 7-0 lead with 13:03 to go in the third quarter, both squads locked horns for the remainder of the second half until the North all-stars iced the game late. The South all-stars looked to take advantage of a North turnover early in the fourth quarter when Jason Catchings (Copiah-Lincoln) stepped in front of a Garrick Jones (Coahoma) option flip and came away with the recovery for the South, returning the pigskin to midfield. Northwest defensive lineman Ranaldo Buck proved to be the drive stopper for the North when he broke through on a fourth-and-one from the North 44 and clogged Jones County’s TraMarcus Toney progress on the fourth-down attempt. Kevin Buford (Northwest), who tacked on the PAT following Lawrence’s score, booted through a 31-yard field goal with four minutes left in the game to give the North a 10-0 lead but the ensuing kickoff sealed the win for the North. Holmes Community College’s Drew Dennis raced down the field untouched and recovered the live ball for the North at the South’s 22yard line. After a completion to Holmes’ Harry Peoples moved the ball to the 10, Coahoma’s Garrick Jones found his teammate Hollis Moore in the back corner of the end zone for the insurance score with 2:41 remaining in the game. In the first half, both squads had opportunities to break the shutout but came up short. South kicker Travis Bradley (Pearl River) misfired on a 32-yard
field goal in the first half and the North dropped a wide-open touchdown pass late in the half that would have given the North the lead. Awards for the day included TraMarcus Toney capturing the South’s Offensive Most Valuable Player and the Keith Daniels Memorial trophy and Pearl River’s Jarvis McCann being named the South’s Defensive Most Valuable Player. On the North side, East Mississippi Brad Henderson was named the North’s Most Valuable Player and was the recipient of the Hubert Tucker Memorial trophy while Northwest’s Ranaldo Buck was the North’s defensive Most Valuable Player. Moore, after pulling down four passes for 45 yards and a touchdown was named the game’s overall Most Valuable Player and received the James H. ‘Wookie’ Gray Memorial trophy.

Tigers enjoying resurgence, keying for title
Since taking over the reins of the Northeast football program in 2008, Ricky Smither has led the Tigers to resurgence. Despite collecting only three wins (one via forfeit) during his first two seasons, the Tigers experienced a breakthrough win against Itawamba Community College 28-21 -- Smither’s first win on the gridiron -- and a 25-10 North Division win over Holmes Community College in 2009 and finally broke through in 2010 posting their first winning season since 2005 at 5-4 and marked the fifth North Division runner-up finish in school history. Now, the Tigers are set to contend for the North Division crown. “One of the keys to success this year will be for us to just stay healthy,” explained Smither. “We have some guys that can play the game but if they aren’t on the field then it won’t do us much good.” “A key for us will be the play of our sophomore quarterback Bryan Steele (6-3, 215; Tupelo) who must stay healthy and play at a high level in order for us to be successful this season,” Smither said. Northeast returns a talented offensive line with the likes of 2010 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-American Honorable Mention Antonio Foster. Foster became Northeast’s first All-American in football since Anthony Norman and Paul Rhodes turned the trick in 1980. Foster, a 6-4 300-pound Valdosta, Ga. native, helps anchor the offensive line that sees Kyle Davis (6-3, 285; Olive Branch), Chanston Jeter (6-4, 315; Ripley) and Nathan Kendrick (5-10, 275; Amory) all return to a group that helped the Tiger offense average nearly 300 yards per game of total offense in during the 2010 season. Foster, Davis, Kendrick, and Jeter helped springboard Northeast to the forefront of the rushing category in the Tigers 49-42 win over defending Mississippi Association of Community/Junior Colleges (MACJC) state champion East Mississippi as the Tiger offensive line helped Jaquise Cook (Ripley) rush for 267 yards and four scores against the Lions as Northeast racked up 346 yards on the ground during the week six win. Cook was awarded the NJCAA Player of the Week for 22

his performance marking the first time the Tigers have ever had a player selected for that honor. “The offensive lineman are ready for the new challenges ahead and we are very excited about the size and athleticism they have,” said offensive line coach Brad Boyette. “We have some sophomores with experience at this level and we also got some talented freshman as well.” Northeast’s offensive line will look to open holes for sophomore running back Jamarcus Goodloe (5-10, 225; Leighton, Ala.) who was second on the team in scoring in 2010 and racked up 266 yards on 65 carries for the Tigers. Joining Goodloe in the backfield is Garrett Smith (Starkville) who will be called upon to tote the pigskin alongside Goodloe. Steele will be pushed by freshman quarterback J.R. Jennings of Calhoun City, who led the Tigers to the

Class 2A State Championship Game in 2010 as a high school senior and can play many positions on the offensive side of the ball, along with Tyler Basil (New Albany) and Parks Frazier (Corinth). Northeast will not rely just on a ground assault to tally victories in 2011. The Tigers return key pieces to the air attack that helped Northeast average nearly 150 yards through the air each game of the 2010 season. Donte’ Barksdale (5-8, 175) of Southaven returns to lead the Tiger receiving corps. Barksdale hauled in 26 passes for 316 yards and a pair of scores during the 5-4 North Division runner-up season. Smither is looking for Barksdale to get some help from newcomer Rodney Beacham (Vicksburg) at the wide-out spot. Northeast also returns a special teams weapon in Taylor Earhart (6-0, 170; Olive Branch) who ranked fourth in the MACJC during the 2010 season in scoring as Earhart accounted for 42 of the Tigers 217 points on the year with 18 extra points and eight field goals. Alabama signee Deion Belue (6-0, 180; Tuscumbia, Ala.) also returns on the special teams for the Tigers as Belue suits up for his second season in the black and gold. Belue electrified Tiger nation during his freshman
Football
campaign and helped lead the Tigers to a win during the 2010 Homecoming game against Coahoma when the then-Northeast freshman broke through for an 80yard score against the visiting Tigers. “Special teams are so important in every league but especially in this league,” said Smither. “That’s why we spend a lot of time on this aspect of the game. We are going to be strong in this area this year, and I expect good things to happen.” However, Smither knows that while the offense will put points on the board and fans in the stands, and the importance of special teams, it is the experienced Tiger defense that will put rings on the fingers. “A big key for us this year will be our defense,” Smither said. “We are very excited about our guys that are back and some newcomers on that side of the ball.” To help that championship come to pass, Northeast will rely heavily on a pair of Anthonys on the defensive side of the ball. Linebacker Anthony Brown (6-3, 235; Cairo, Ga.) is poised to lead the Tigers again after leading Northeast with 100 tackles during the 2010 season and eight tackles for loss while DT Anthony Payne (6-1, 300; Leroy, Ala.) returns in the trenches for the Tigers after a freshman season that saw Payne register 13 tackles for loss

Tiger and was an MACJC All-State first team selection. “These guys are unbelievable,” explains Smither. “They are both hard workers with plenty of talent and we will look for them to be leaders for our team this season along with some other guys as well.” Next to Brown will be sophomore Ryan Richardson (5-10, 205; Ripley), who tallied 39 tackles, two pass break ups, and two pass pressures in 2010 before sitting out the last few games due to an injury. Eli Canton of Hernando and Nick Thomason of Muscle Shoals, Ala., look to add depth to the Tiger linebacking corp. In addition to the Anthonys and Richardson, sophomore defensive end Pat Moore (6-3, 245, Southaven) will help Payne anchor the defensive line after a freshman campaign that saw the Southaven-native register 43 tackles and five tackles for loss. Defensive line coach Travis Macon will direct this group of upper classmen along with some other newcomers who will add some talent and depth to the line. “We have a transfer -- Jeremiah Booth from Camden County, Ga. -- that will play the nose guard position for us this fall and he should be something to watch,” said Macon. “ Also we have defensive end Maurice Booker (Leighton, Ala.) who is another guy we are going to
Football look for to do some good things for us this year.” In the defensive backfield, a pair of experienced shutdown corners comes in the shape of Jeremy Spikner (6-0 185; Olive Branch) and Belue. When not returning kicks, Belue registered almost 20 total tackles during his freshman season while Spikner was second in the MACJC in interceptions with four in addition to 27 solo stops and seven pass breakups. “We got a veteran group on the field this year led by Belue who had 16 solo tackles and four pass break ups,” said defensive coordinator Jeff Carter. “Last year most teams game planned away from Belue, but we still had Jeremy Spikner at the other corner and he answered the challenge. We look for him to do the same this year.” “At safety, we have a big hitting sophomore from Baldwyn -- Devin Lindsey (6-2, 190; Baldwyn),” said Carter. “Lindsey is a big guy who got some reps last season but will be called upon to lead the safeties this season along with sophomore Marvell Taylor (5-10, 180; Charleston) who played linebacker in 2010.” If everything falls into place and the Tigers can stay healthy, look for 2011 to be Smither’s best year as Northeast’s commander-in-chief on the gridiron.
Donte’ Barksdale (4) of Southaven, returns to lead Nathan Kendrick (54) of Amory and reigning National Junior College Athletic the Tiger receiving corps after becoming one of Bryan Association (NJCAA) honorable mention All-American Antonio Foster (78) of Steele’s go-to receivers during the 2010 season. Valdosta, Ga., look to lead an experience Tiger offensive line. 24

All-Americans Throughout the history of Northeast Mississippi Community College, superior athletes have been named to the All-American team, the highest honor bestowed upon any player. Recipients of this honor are chosen by the 23 regional directors of the National Junior College Athletic Association. Their selection for the All-American team, second team and honorable mention are made only after careful evaluation of the hundreds of nominations which are submitted by community/junior college coaches from across the country. We are proud to salute those who brought honor to themselves as young men and women and to Northeast Mississippi Community College for the time to come.

Football
Athletics brought hope in 2010-11 Throughout the 2010-11 academic year, the Northeast athletic department continued to bring praise to the college. Whether it was on the gridiron, hardwood, diamond, tennis courts or the golf course, Northeast athletics continued to excel inside and outside of the classroom. Ricky Smither’s Tiger football team posted the twelfth winning season in the college’s 51-year football history when Smither’s troops finished with a 5-4 overall record and a 4-2 mark in the Mississippi Association of Community/Junior Colleges (MACJC) North Division in 2010. Northeast’s 4-2 mark in the North Division helped the Tigers finish in a tie for second place in the ultra competitive North Division. Northeast garnered national attention during week six of the season after the Tigers were able to knock off defending MACJC State Champion East Mississippi 49-42 in a shootout in Scooba where Tiger running back Jaquise Cook (Ripley) Ran for 267 yards and four scores against the Lions. Cook was awarded the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Player of the Week honors following his week six performance. In addition to posting the team’s first winning season since 2005, the Tiger football team also captured the attention of the national media when Northeast was included in the NJCAA National Top 20 Football Poll for the week of October 19, 2010 at No. 18 after the Tigers opened up the season 5-2. Not to be outdone, five different Tigers were honored by the MACJC with All-State status with wide receiver Josh Jarboe (Atlanta, Ga.), defensive back Brynden Trawick (Atlanta, Ga.), linebacker Anthony Brown (Cairo, Ga.), defensive back Jeremy Spikner (Olive Branch) and offensive lineman Antonio Foster (Valdosta, Ga.) all being selected to the All-State squad. Foster continued to represent the Tigers on the NJCAA Region XXIII squad and became the first Tiger football player to garner All-American status in 30 years when the Valdosta, Georgia native was selected as an honorable mention All-American. On the hardwood, David Robbins led the Tiger basketball team to appearances in the MACJC State Tournament and the NJCAA Region XXIII Tournament after finishing as the North Division runner-up with a 7-5 mark in the North Division and an 11-14 mark overall. The Tigers found the same opponent awaiting them in both the state and region tournaments – 19th-ranked Pearl River Community College – and the Tigers gave the Wildcats a run in the state tournament before falling in overtime 92-83. Due to his effort on the court, sophomore point guard Tyler Pritchard (Iuka) was honored as a NJCAA Region XXIII selection after his 19-point effort against Pearl River in the Region XXIII Tournament and the Northeast sophomore was selected to play in the MACJC All-Star Basketball Game in Decatur following the season. In women’s basketball, Ricky Ford’s longtime run as Lady Tiger head coach came to an end after 30 years when Ford stepped down following the Lady Tigers appearance in the post-season. Ford helped lead the Lady tigers to a fourth place finish in the North Division (6-6) and faced off with the MACJC 2010-11 state champion and state tournament host Copiah-Lincoln Community College in the first round of the state tournament. After posting a 11-12 overall mark, the Lady Tigers had a pair of individuals selected for the MACJC All-North Division second team as Erin Strowder (Memphis, Tenn.) and Anna Brooke Page (Belmont) garnered individual honors. Sophomore point guard Amber Johnson (Pine Grove) was selected to play in the MACJC All-Star Basketball Game in Decatur following the season.
Ford wrapped up his 30-year coaching career at Northeast with a 588226 collegiate record and carries a 72.7 winning percentage overall with a 676-253 record. On the tennis courts, Jeff Melson continued to transform the Tiger and Lady Tiger tennis teams into state and national contenders. During the 2010 MACJC state tournament, Northeast saw its whirlwind season come to an end as the Tigers placed four matches into the semi-finals of the state tournaments and the Lady Tigers had two matches reach semi-final status with Chelsey Whitaker (Alcorn Central) reaching the finals of the state tournament. Led by sophomores Ward Bynum, Colin Holley, Ben Ferrell, Ben Ford and Matt Murphy, the Tiger team had one of its most successful season in recent history and finished the year ranked in the top 30 by the International Tennis Association (ITA) at the end of the season. On the links, Craig Lauderdale continued to keep the Northeast Tiger golf team in the national spotlight as Austin Holt (New Albany) continued Northeast’s streak of national tournament appearances when the Tiger sophomore qualified for the NJCAA National Golf Championships at Goosepond Colony Golf Course in Scottsboro, Ala., in May. In 2010, a pair of Tiger linksters – Blake Hatfield (Booneville) and Brandon Robbins (Corinth) – qualified for the national event while Hatfield made a solo appearance in Northeast’s first year back in Division II competition in 2009. During the 2007 and 2008 season, Northeast went undefeated through the Mississippi Association of Community/Junior Colleges (MACJC) Division III ranks and captured the Region XXIII crown and appeared in the NJCAA Division III National Golf Championship in Jamestown, NY. Holt rallied back on the final day of the four-day national event to finish in a tie for 57th overall with a four-day 305. On the softball diamond, Jody Long’s Lady Tigers returned to the 2010-11 MACJC State Tournament in Perkinston and gave host Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College a run in the first round of the tournament before seeing their season come to an end. Northeast finished a 25-23 record on the softball diamond and the program sits just one win shy of the 300-win plateau since switching over to fast-pitch competition in 2011. In 11seasons, Northeast is 299-232 and has a 137-56 record in the North Divisionheading into the 2012 campaign. With its 25 wins during the 2010-11 season, Northeast recorded its most wins since the 2008 Lady Tiger softball team pieced together a 3420 mark en route to a North Division championship. On the baseball diamond, Kent Farris’ club finished the year with a 22-20 mark and was 12-12 in the North Division and came away with a season split against rival Itawamba Community College claiming a 4-2 victory in Fulton and 6-1 decision against the Indians in Booneville on April 13. Corey Smith of New Albany and Jacob Long of Vardaman were named to the MACJC All-State first team while Trae Allison of Hernando and Will Wallis of Ripley were named to the All-State second team. Jordan Gurley of Corinth was awarded with a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Region XXIII golden glove selection at third base. Northeast’s cheerleaders made the successful transition from a co-ed squad in the 2009-10 season to a squad of 10 during the 2010-11 year under the leadership of cheerleading coach Jennifer Johnson.
