Liggins lives in spotlight at quarterback once again Coahoma (Clarksdale) Date: October 5

Jeremy Liggins Everything in the world seemed right again for Jeremy Liggins after a big 34-21 victory for Northeast Mississippi Community College in a crucial Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) North Division contest on Thursday, September 19. After an offseason full of change and adjustment to the defensive side of the football, Liggins made his return to quarterback - the position that he honed and crafted his skills at for the majority of his gridiron career – that evening against Northwest Mississippi Community College. Not that he minded the switch to defense. In fact, it was a new role that Liggins was learning to embrace and excel at. The Oxford native, who is listed as one of the top-25 junior college prospects in the nation by JCGridiron.com in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) media guide, started at defensive end in two of the Tigers’ first three contests and made an impact in each, especially in the North Division opener against Holmes Community College. Liggins recorded a career-best seven tackles, four of them unassisted, in the win over the Bulldogs. In three games he compiled 14 total tackles, one for loss. “I felt like I was adjusting pretty good,” said Liggins. “It was kind of slow at first starting out in practice because I was more of an offensive player. to adjust to the physicality of the game and the strategies on defense.” But as the Tigers struggled with turnovers and other issues on offense, it became clear to head coach Ricky Smither that it was time to bring Liggins back home to a more instinctive and innate spot on the field. Smither had installed a specialized package of plays early in preseason training camp for his transfer from Louisiana State University (LSU), but the Northeast headman felt Liggins needed a more consistent presence in the offensive backfield. “Circumstances kind of changed so I met with (defensive coordinator Travis) Macon and (defensive line coach Greg) Davis and they were able to give him up,” said Smither. “It hurt us a little bit there, but they were able to overcome that.” The influence Liggins had against Northwest was notable. He came off the bench to complete 6 of 13 passes, including the first four he attempted, for 154 yards and three touchdowns. All those numbers in his first game behind center in nearly two years. “I felt pretty comfortable,” Liggins said. “We made some adjustments during practice and knew those holes were going to be there.” The 6-4, 295-pound freshman also added a team leading 7.8 yards per carry against the Rangers, bringing with him multiple defenders before falling to the turf.
It is that athleticism that makes Liggins such a dynamic weapon for the Tigers, according to Smither. “I don’t know if Jeremy wouldn’t be the best linebacker or running back we had,” he said. “Jeremy’s just a player, man. He’s got it, and on top of it he plays for the love of the game. He’s not just playing because somebody wants him or he’s big.” The selflessness of Liggins to move to a completely new spot than he had practiced for at the halfway point of the 2013 season also impressed Smither. “He’s a winner and the few snaps he’s taken here he’s proved that for us,” said Smither. “There’s a passion to him and anytime you can have that passion at something you can be good at it.” Liggins got the start at quarterback for the first time of his collegiate career last Thursday against No. 10 Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. Fans should expect to see plenty of Liggins over the latter half of the campaign for Northeast, but no matter the outcome the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) commitment is just excited to be back and playing a major part for his team. “Through all the adversity I’m still here, still strong and still living. That’s a good thing,” he said. “I say I’m blessed because a lot of people if they hadn’t went the right route they would have given up.”

Smith reigns as 2013 Homecoming Queen Northeast Mississippi Community College’s student body recently selected Brooke Smith of New Albany to reign as the college’s 2013 Homecoming Queen during campus-wide elections in September. Smith and the entire 2013 Homecoming court made their first official appearance at a pep rally on the front lawn of the Ramsey Student Services Building on Thursday, October 3 at 10:50 a.m. Pre-game festivities will include recognitions of the Alumni and Sports Hall of Fame inductees and the Tiger Marching Band, which will begin its pre-game performance at approximately 2:30 p.m. Northeast’s softball team continues homecoming activities on Sunday, October 6 with its fourth annual alumni game at 1 p.m. at Booneville Westside City Park. Smith, a graduate of New Albany High School, is the daughter of Terrie Bagwell. At Northeast, Smith has been involved in the Iota Zeta chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society, the Mississippi Organization for Associated Degree Nursing (MOSA) and attends the Wesley Foundation. Smith is currently enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program and plans to attend the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) to pursue a bachelor’s degree in nursing with a specialization in emergency room operations. Joining Smith on the 2013 Homecoming Court are sophomore maids Abby Little of Corinth, Amanda Permenter of Pontotoc, Arnenar “Nina” Johnson of Verona, Gracie Cheek of Booneville, Gracie Wilbanks of Corinth, Katelin Wallace of Tishomingo and Megan McDonald of New Albany. Freshmen maids include Lyndi Stokes and Shannon Goode, both of New Albany, Erica Doran and Fu Meng, both of Corinth and Haleigh Tennison, Lexie Gamble and Tatum Emmons, all of Booneville round out the 15-member court. Northeast holds a 29-8 record in the series with Coahoma since the two schools started playing each other in 1976 and has beaten the visiting Tigers five of the last six times in Tiger Stadium dating back to 2001. Northeast captured a 31-17 win in 2010 against Coahoma – the last time the visiting Tigers were homecoming guests in Booneville. Northeast Mississippi Community College recently held campus wide elections to select its 2013 homecoming court.
