Cunningham walks boulevard of success Holmes (Goodman) Date: September 12

Northeast-Holmes History Last 10 meetings

Mitchell Cunningham Fans that come close enough to the playing field or Northeast Mississippi Community College bench during a game which catch a glimpse of Mitchell Cunningham may get the sense that he has a rough attitude. If first impressions were the absolute truth, then that might be accurate. Cunningham sports a tattoo that starts near his neck and runs halfway down his right arm to the elbow. He also dawned full eye black which covered the majority of his face in the season opener for the Tigers at Copiah-Lincoln Community College. Those that know Cunningham realize he is a much more laid-back and easy going individual in person. That is, unless he is on the field of competition. The Ecru native has brought a never-godown attitude to the running back position at Northeast. So far in his young collegiate career he has made defenders miss by making spin moves, jumped over players to gain extra yards and even carried multiple opponents while trying to stay on his feet. Cunningham “is the type of guy that is able to turn game on and game off,” said Tigers head coach Ricky Smither. “He’s a fun guy to coach and he’s a great kid to be around. He’s got a great personality. He’s the guy that’s doing what he’s supposed to do in class, but when he crosses those lines he turns into a different person. As soon as he gets inside those lines he turns it on. He’s the type of guy that you want on your football team.” The rugged outward appearance on game days is for personal hype only, according to Cunningham. “Some say it shows that I’m a hard runner or that I’m crazy, but it’s nothing like that really,” he said. “It’s just stuff I like to do before 8

the game.” Cunningham has certainly developed the respect of the Northeast coaching staff as a hard-nose runner that will give them his all each down he plays. In fact, the freshman’s actions on the field remind Smither of the way a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame used to play. “Mitchell’s a guy from the ‘80’s,” he said. “He’s a Larry Csonka (Miami Dolphins, New York Giants: 1964-79) fullback type mentality guy with great speed. He’s a valuable asset.” Professional football actually runs in the bloodline for Cunningham. His uncle, Joe Don Looney, played for five different National Football League (NFL) organizations in the 1960s. Looney, who saw time in the NFL as a running back, left one lasting quote that has stuck with Cunningham to this day. “He had a statement that said, ‘If a hole is not there then a great back will make the hole,’” Cunningham said, “so I’ve always just lived behind making a hole if I have to. I’m always fighting for yards because I feel that I can break any tackle.” Tonight’s game against Holmes will see Cunningham start the third game of his young collegiate career. He has compiled 230 yards on the ground in Northeast’s two games so far. Oddly enough, the only touchdown Cunningham has recorded was on a five-yard reception from quarterback Jerrard Randall during last week’s game against Jones County Junior College. “We kept running our quick game passes and I was always swinging out on the backside. I told Jerrard to dump me this ball and I’ll walk in with it,” said Cunningham. “Yeah, I feel like I should have some rushing touchdowns. It

looks kinda weird having a lot of yards with no touchdowns beside it.” The scores may or may not come, and that is fine with Cunningham as long as the Tigers win. He also does not mind sharing plays with fellow backs Tez Lane and Corbin White. The trio have become close and even developed nicknames. Cunningham’s nickname of Juice goes back to his days at North Pontotoc High School, while White is Thud and Lane has become known to Smither as Lightning. “We all compliment each other in a way,” Cunningham said. “Say I come in and I’m running downhill and running hard, then you’ve Corbin that comes in and he’s just bouncing off folks. Tez just runs right by them. We’re all pretty much the same.” It is the resurgence of the running game and a more balanced offense that has made Northeast a much more dangerous team this season. “Everything that we did in camp, those three guys gelled,” said Smither. “I saw a bond with those three guys that meant a lot to me. Mitchell’s the one that’s hitting that up, so he’s a leader.” If Cunningham’s current average of 115 yards per game holds, he would become the first Tiger player to rush for over 1,000 yards in a season since New Albany native Jeremy Cannon did so in 2009. But that is not what is on his mind right now. “The thing with him is it doesn’t matter,” Smither said. “When I met with him Sunday (September 8), he said, ‘Hey coach I’m fine. I just hate losing. We’ve got to get on the winning track.’ “He never asked about his stats. He never asked about anything. He’s what you want on your team is all I can say about him.”
