Wilson wants to lead Tigers to postseason Jones County (Ellisville) Date: September 5

Northeast-Jones County History Last 10 meetings

Antwan Wilson Antwan Wilson is quite familiar with the concept and definition of being a leader. He led Charleston High School as a senior to a 14-2 record, the only losses coming at the beginning of the season to programs that were two classifications and nearly 500 students bigger than his school. His team also captured the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class 3A state championship with a victory over Hazlehurst High School. “I told myself I had to be a leader in high school because I was the quarterback and my coach (Tony Vance) also told me I had to lead my team,” said Wilson. “So I had to be a great leader.” Two years after playing on the biggest stage of prep football and coming out a victor, Wilson wants to do the same at his new home and knows to do so he must again be in command just as he was in high school. The sophomore is one of only 16 players that return from Northeast Mississippi Community College’s 55-man roster of one year ago. With so many new faces, Wilson knows the responsibilities that he and his teammates that possess a season of experience at the junior college level have entering the 2013 campaign. “It’s a big role,” he said. “Every sophomore that we have on this team has to be leaders, not just one person. The freshmen are looking up to us as leaders.” It’s a challenge that the starting defensive back has embraced both on and off the playing and practice field. After watching him progress for a full year, Northeast head 8

“(Antwan) has come in here and taken care of his classwork. What he does on the field, I mean he’s a tremendous leader. You ask the team to do something and he’s right in the middle of it. He’s making sure it’s getting done.” Ricky Smither NEMCC Head Coach coach Ricky Smither knew he had found one of the torchbearers for his team. “What can I not say good about that kid?” said Smither. “Antwan is just a tremendous kid to be around. You don’t even know he’s on campus other than getting calls from teachers saying what a great job he’s doing. “He has come in here and taken care of his classwork. What he does on the field, I mean he’s a tremendous leader. You ask the team to do something and he’s right in the middle of it. He’s making sure it’s getting done.” Defensive backs coach Jonathan Webster echoed what the Tiger headman had to say about one of his top players in the secondary. “Antwan is a guy that exemplifies everything that we preach on a daily basis,” Webster said. “He is dedicated to his profession both on and off the field. He’s a guy that when he speaks, guys listen and they know without a doubt that he is one of the leaders on this team.” Wilson led Charleston at quarterback

and defensive back. The dual threat runner and passer accounted for 2,644 yards and 32 touchdowns for the Tigers as a senior in their state title run. His stats on defense were less noticeable with 27 tackles and one interception in 16 games. But that side of the football would be where Wilson focused his football career on upon his arrival at Northeast. There was a period of adjustment during his freshman season, according to Webster, but the 6-0, 180-pound Wilson steadily increased his skills. “It was a learning curve for him at first, especially being committed to only the defensive side of the ball,” said Webster. “But in my experience, quarterbacks tend to make good defensive backs. When you take a guy that’s used to leading from a quarterback position and used to being in charge, it kind of transitions well when you ask them to come to the back end and play DB.” Wilson recorded 14 tackles and one interception in 2012, but he started this year See Wilson, on page 9

with a bang. He picked off a pass in the end zone to save a touchdown in Northeast’s opening game at then-No. 9 Copiah-Lincoln Community College last week and added four tackles for a defense that steadily improved as the contest progressed. “The focus was on the ball. Once it was thrown my way I just had to get it,” said Wilson. “I had to get my feet wet. Everybody was a little rusty so we just had to come together.” While Wilson exemplifies the persona of a positive athlete, suffering defeat is something he takes very seriously. “I don’t like losing, but you have to bounce back and be ready for the next game,” he said. “I just have to prepare myself, don’t try to be down and just keep my head up.” Smither sees that attitude of a champion every time Wilson steps onto the field, whether it is the practice turf or game time. “He’s the type of kid like the other night when we lost, he had tears in his eyes,” Smither said. “He’s a high character kid that’s going to succeed. He is definitely a winner.” While the Tigers didn’t win in the first game of Wilson’s final season in Booneville, he still believes Northeast can challenge for the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) state championship if the team stays together. “We’ve just got to keep working hard and don’t be down,” said Wilson. “Just believe in ourselves that we can do it because I know we can do it.”
