Prather, sophomore ready for final battle Mississippi Delta (Moorhead)

Date: October 24 Northeast-Miss. Delta History Last 10 meetings

Razean Prather When Razean Prather walks off the playing surface of Tiger Stadium for the final time tonight, he is all but guaranteed to continue his football career. The Ripley High School graduate was not as sure about that when first stepping onto the campus of Northeast Mississippi Community College in the fall of 2012. But after two impressive seasons anchoring the Tiger defensive line, Prather’s prospect list is extensive. He has received looks from NCAA Division I schools including Troy University, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, the University of Memphis, Middle Tennessee State University, BethuneCookman University and Baylor University. While Prather has not made a decision yet as to which institution he will continue his gridiron days at, he is proud to know that Northeast has helped him learn to deal with the tough task of equalizing the amount of time required for both academics and athletics at the collegiate level. “It’s been rough trying to balance school and football, but I’ve found a way through it,” said Prather. “It feels great knowing that I’ve got a great support system behind me.” Prather is one of 19 sophomores that will don the black and gold one last time in Booneville against Mississippi Delta Community College. With a win, the group would help secure the Tigers’ seventh Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) North Division runner-up finish in program history. It is a special group of young men that Prather has grown to respect and admire in his two years at Northeast. “I played with a great group of guys and 8

I’m going to miss them,” he said. “They’re like my brothers. I’d do anything for them. We’re just going to go out there and play our hearts out and after the game we’re still going to stay in touch.” While the majority of the roster this year was comprised of freshman, Tigers coach Ricky Smither feels like the recruiting class of 2012 was one of the best he’s put on the field. “This sophomore group has been a good one for us,” said the Northeast headman. “I feel like they did a pretty good job for us and are per se maybe one of the top three groups we’ve had.” Smither has been especially impressed with the improvement of Prather under the direction of defensive coordinator Travis Macon and line coach Greg Davis throughout his time at Northeast. He has tallied 40 tackles this year, which is fourth best on the team and the greatest of any lineman. It is also just four away from doubling his number of takedowns from last season. Prather adds to his solid numbers 11.5 tackles for loss and three sacks. “Razean’s done a tremendous job for us,” said Smither. “He has been about as steady of a defensive lineman as we’ve had the past year. He’s played through injury and we’ve moved him around just a little bit. “The kid was a great sign from right in our back yard. I’m really proud of the effort he’s given.” Prather enjoyed the direct tutelage and wisdom of Davis, who brought his knowledge from the offensive line to the opposite side of the ball this year with the addition of Mike Markuson to the coaching staff during the offseason.

“Coach Davis works us, but sometimes he has fun with us,” said Prather. “He told us to never get too caught up in all the football stuff. Just live, have fun out on the field and don’t be too up tight.” He is coming off the best game of his tenure as a Tiger one week ago against then-No. 20 Itawamba Community College. The Tippah County native recorded nine total tackles, eight of them unassisted, against the Indians with four tackles for loss and two sacks. Prather also made one of the highlight plays of the 2013 campaign against during Northeast’s homecoming contest versus Coahoma Community College earlier this month. Anthony Peters batted a pass from Coahoma quarterback Quaintavous Peters into the air and Prather dove and caught the ball for a rare interception by a defensive lineman. Following a loss at then-third ranked East Mississippi Community College, Prather was instrumental in getting his teammates pepped up and refocused for their huge rivalry matchup at Itawamba. “We were looking for somebody to step up and he did,” Smither said. “He demanded that the rest of the guys come on and practice. He was almost a cheerleader, co-coach type of guy last week.” Some other school will receive that leadership as Prather wraps up his junior college career. He offers one bit of advice to a promising batch of returning freshman. “Play hard and leave it all out on the field,” he said. “They’ve got a good group coming back. With all the stuff we taught them at practice, they could go to the playoffs next year.”

In memory of former Tiger Bryan Steele Please join us tonight in honoring the memory of former Northeast Mississippi Community College quarterback Bryan Steele. Steele called the signals for the Tiger football team in both the 2010 and 2011 seasons under current Tiger head coach Ricky Smither. In his first collegiate start, Steele led the Tigers to a 49-42 win over East Mississippi Community College in Scooba on October 7, 2010. Steele unexpectedly passed away on November 4, 2012. During pregame festivities, the Tupelo Restaurant Association will make a presentation to the Tiger football program in memory of the former Northeast quarterback.
