Band of Brothers: South Panola offensive linemen come together

Justin Barksdale

Damien Rayford

Three men that have become brothers through their battles on the gridiron are set for one final hurrah together as the 2014 campaign begins at Northeast Mississippi Community College. The tandem of Justin Barksdale, Damien Rayford and Sean Rogers return to the City of Hospitality for their sophomore seasons and secure one of the most experienced positions for the Tigers at offensive line. “One of the big things we struggle with at junior college is chemistry,” said Northeast head coach Ricky Smither. “To be able to have those three guys is huge. They know their strengths and weaknesses and they all complement each other. They’re three great young men and are tremendous guys to be around.” Barksdale and Rogers started each contest as freshmen one year ago at left tackle and left guard, respectively. Rayford also participated in every matchup and was the backup to current Bethune-Cookman University lineman Romia Wilson. The transition from the prep level was not easy for the trio, but it was one that each of the standouts knew awaited them upon their arrival to the Booneville campus. “My first year was hard, but I was anticipating the pressure and intensity of the game,” Rayford said. “It was everything that I expected.” It should come as no surprise that Barksdale, Rayford and Rogers ended up at the same college after playing for four seasons

at South Panola High School. They were all part of at least one squad that claimed a Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) state championship. Rogers graduated in 2012 after helping the Tigers to an undefeated season and a MHSAA Class 6A title in December 2010. Barksdale and Rayford received their diplomas the following year after leading the Tigers to another crown. While Barksdale and Rayford remained in Batesville with their eyes fixed on a trip to Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium for a championship opportunity, Rogers enrolled at Northeast and took a redshirt during the 2012 fall semester. Rogers may not have helped the Tigers on the field that campaign, but he did aid the coaching staff in their recruiting efforts by telling his pals Barksdale and Rayford about the beautiful grounds and amazing facilities that Northeast has to offer. “I felt like I was pretty big in them coming here,” said Rogers. “It’s just like home. There was nothing to be afraid of. You come here and work your butt off so you can earn your spot. I just told them that so it would help in their decision.” The extra publicity from Rogers paid off and the Tigers have benefitted greatly from the efforts of Barksdale and Rayford, who garnered his first career start at thenNo. 9 Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College last week in the season opener for both schools. ciation of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) North Division championship football program, are critical during the recruiting process as seen with Rogers’ testimonies at South Panola. “If not for Sean’s experience here, I don’t know if we get those two guys,” Smither said. “That was big to have Sean go there and speak to those guys and tell them about Northeast and what we’re doing here both academically and athletically. It makes my chest swell to have a kid of his caliber go back and brag about what we’re doing.” See Brothers, on page 9

Rogers is proof of the scholastic endeavors among the Tigers’ nine sports organizations. He was one of 17 Northeast players to be named to the MACJC Academic All-State team for maintaining a grade point average (GPA) above 3.25 on a 4.0 scale. “It felt amazing,” said Rogers. “Our coaches always say that what you do in the classroom also coincides with what you do on the field.” The expectations for these men entering the 2014 campaign are high. They’re three of six athletes coming back who have game experience on the line, including Martize Mitchell, Lakendrick Preston and Ross Smith. “I’d throw those three in the mix with anybody in the state,” Smither said. “I think they’re three of the best offensive lineman anywhere.” However, no matter how their sixth year on the same sideline turns out the friendship that they share will last a lifetime. “I can just really call them my brothers,” Barksdale said. “We’ve been with each other forever. You might as well say we grew up together. It’s a bond that’s unbreakable.” “It’s been amazing,” said Rayford. “Our chemistry is so tight and it’s something you can’t break.” “Just being able to have the extra two years with these guys and play by their side again is a great feeling,” Rogers said.
