Students, Fans, Alumni, On behalf of the Northeast Mississippi Community College Athletics Department, welcome to Northeast and a new phase in your life as you pursue a college education. We are proud you have chosen Northeast to further your education and athletic career. Welcome to our parents, fans, and alumni that have elected to attend this athletic event. We strive to provide opportunities of personal growth through academic work, team experiences, and development of a sense of ethical responsibility. Northeast recognizes that its primary commitment is to the education of our student-athletes. We extend academic support, tutoring, and priority class scheduling as a few of the tools offered as each of our athletes progress toward their degree. In January of 2017, Northeast kicked off the GROW Northeast campaign. The intention of this endeavor was not only to increase student enrollment, but to establish, as is the case with any organization, company, or educational institution, a foundation for excellence. As you will see from the list of “goals to grow shown here, student success is our first priority. We must constantly be searching and exploring new ways and means to embrace learning and classroom instruction. The success of our students is at the forefront of our desire to grow. I hope you will have time prior to or after this athletic event to walk or drive around our campus and experience what we have to offer. We are happy to have you become a part of the Northeast family. Please feel free to contact me should the need ever arise. As you leave campus after this event, we wish you the very best and safe travels!! Sincerely,

Ricky G. Ford PRESIDENT

Edwards Learns from Targeting Call to Become One of State’s Top Defensive Backs

O

ne of the most talked about players on Northeast Mississippi Community College’s football roster entering the 2017 campaign was Johnathon Edwards. Edwards had a phenomenal freshman season with the Tigers following a wonderful prep career at Philadelphia High School in the east central portion of the Magnolia State. He tallied 37 total tackles, which was second most among Northeast’s returning players this season and only one behind linebacker Peyton McMahon’s 38 takedowns. His tackles were broken down to 22 solo and 15 assisted stops. Edwards finished in a tie with current Austin Peay State University standout Keawvis Cummings for the fifth most solo tackles on the team. He ended the season on a hot streak with 19 combined tackles in the final two weeks. That included a career-high 11 stops versus Holmes Community College. Edwards might be most known for his skills of covering opponents’ wide receivers. He successfully defended seven passes one year ago; which was third most behind Brandon Tillman, who is now at Delta State University, and Cummings. Three of those defended passes were interceptions. His inaugural pick with the Tigers was a diving play in the end zone that thwarted an East Mississippi Community College scoring drive. Edwards followed that with interceptions against both Mississippi Delta Community College and Northwest Mississippi Community College. He had a season-long return of 15 yards against the Rangers. He even recovered a fumble in a 30-12 victory over rival Itawamba Community College to bring his total number of takeaways on the season to four. That was second most on the squad behind only McMahon’s five. Because of all those statistics and his natural knack of finding his way into a majority of the defensive plays for Northeast, Edwards gained a lot of attention during the offseason. Edwards was recognized as a top player to watch nationally by JCGridiron.com, which covers football at the two-year level in both the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA).

Johnathon Edwards Coaches at the four-year level have caught on to Edwards’ prowess in the defensive backfield as well. He officially holds offers from tradition-rich programs at the University of Colorado and West Virginia University of the Big 12 Conference. Edwards also has several other institutions that are in constant contact with him and could provide an offer in the near future, including another Big 12 affiliate in Iowa State University plus the University of Southern Mississippi. “He’s very intelligent and he makes plays,” Northeast head coach Greg Davis said. “The biggest thing with him is he’s a competitor on the field. He loves to hit and he loves to go out there and show what he can do. He has a lot of confidence.” While it is comforting for Edwards to know he is all but assured to continue his career on the gridiron for at least two more years, he is not satisfied and consistently works hard in practice daily. “I’ve got to try my best to get out of practice what I can and work on what I need to work on,” said Edwards. “I’ve got to continue to focus in.” The energy and passion that Edwards showed during spring training, summer workouts and fall camp has paid off with a sensational start to his

final campaign on the Booneville campus. Edwards has compiled 12 tackles through two games, which is sixth most for the Tigers and second most among their defensive backs behind only rising freshman Juwan Taylor. The Philadelphia native also had a career-long 57-yard interception return during Northeast’s season opener two weeks ago at Pearl River Community College. “He’s a kid that can go out there and make a lot of plays because of his instincts,” Davis said. “He’s able to do different things with our coverages that we’re not able to do with certain people. That’s a testament to him and his ability. We’re really proud that he’s on our football team.” Thursday’s Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) North Division opener against East Mississippi brings with it the one-year anniversary of perhaps the only negative moment of Edwards’ tenure at Northeast. Edwards was disqualified from last year’s meeting with the Lions in Scooba after being the subject of a targeting penalty during the first half of the competition. He missed the ensuing game at Southwest Mississippi Community College because of the ejection as well. However, instead of sulk over losing a game and missing a half against the team that eventually won the state championship, Edwards used it as a motivating factor to become a smarter player. “I didn’t like the call personally, but I really couldn’t do anything about it,” said Edwards. “That (off) week, I just got a whole lot better and realized why they called the call and tried my hardest not to do the same exact thing.” Edwards believes he has benefited from the instruction of Northeast defensive backs coach Kareem Moore, who played the position for the Washington Redskins in the National Football League (NFL) for three years. “He encourages me a whole lot,” Edwards said. “He’s been where I’m trying to get to. He tells me what I need to work on and I love it.” Edwards noted that he has no regrets coming to the City of Hospitality to begin his collegiate career and wants to find a similar home in the future. “I love it here at Northeast. If this was a four-year (school), I’d stay here all four,” he said. “I know everybody on the team personally and would like to have the same experience at the next level.”
