Students, Fans, Alumni, On behalf of the Northeast Mississippi Community College Athletics Department, welcome to Northeast and a new phase in your life as you pursue a college education. We are proud you have chosen Northeast to further your education and athletic career. Welcome to our parents, fans, and alumni that have elected to attend this athletic event. We strive to provide opportunities of personal growth through academic work, team experiences, and development of a sense of ethical responsibility. Northeast recognizes that its primary commitment is to the education of our student-athletes. We extend academic support, tutoring, and priority class scheduling as a few of the tools offered as each of our athletes progress toward their degree. In January of 2017, Northeast kicked off the GROW Northeast campaign. The intention of this endeavor was not only to increase student enrollment, but to establish, as is the case with any organization, company, or educational institution, a foundation for excellence. As you will see from the list of “goals to grow shown here, student success is our first priority. We must constantly be searching and exploring new ways and means to embrace learning and classroom instruction. The success of our students is at the forefront of our desire to grow. I hope you will have time prior to or after this athletic event to walk or drive around our campus and experience what we have to offer. We are happy to have you become a part of the Northeast family. Please feel free to contact me should the need ever arise. As you leave campus after this event, we wish you the very best and safe travels!! Sincerely,

Ricky G. Ford PRESIDENT

MIGHTY MCMAHON RETURNS TO GUIDE YOUTHFUL TIGER DEFENSE

T

here is no mistaking Peyton McMahon when watching the Northeast Mississippi Community College football team perform on a weekly basis. Standing at five feet and eight inches, McMahon is joined by cornerback Dazion Kincaid as the smallest players by height on the defensive side of the pigskin for the Tigers. Sporting a fully grown beard and shaved head, McMahon has also garnered questions from those not associated with the program such as, “Are you an assistant coach for the football team?” However, what may be more noticeable than either of the aforementioned facts is his passion and dedication for the sport and his desire to win. Those attributes have not gone unnoticed by Northeast’s coaching staff, especially head coach Greg Davis, who feels that McMahon is the perfect example of a player that he wants in his program. “Peyton is probably one of the most underrated players in all of the 14 (football playing) junior colleges in the state,” said Davis. “He brings a lot to the table with his attitude, mental toughness and work ethic. “He plays like a guy that is six-foot-four, 300 pounds with the way he can come in, make plays and create havoc. He’s somebody that’s going to play with relentless effort and a guy that’s going to give us everything that we ask of him day after day.” McMahon is involved in almost every single play from his starting position at Sam linebacker. Whether it’s a pass to the visitors sideline, a quick screen towards the home bench or a run straight up the middle, do not be shocked to see jersey number 30 involved in the tackle. The numbers back that up. He was the top returning tackler for the Tigers entering this season with 38 stops during his freshman campaign. McMahon split those tackles evenly with 19 solo and 19 assisted takedowns. He added 3.5 tackles for loss, two pass break ups, one forced fumble and a block. The Southaven native also led Northeast in total takeaways one year ago with five. He had four fumble recoveries and one interception over the course of nine games. He earned Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) Defensive Player of the Week honors after accounting for two fumble recoveries at Southwest Mississippi Community

Peyton McMahon College. McMahon returned one of those 35 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter of that contest. McMahon tied a season-high in tackles with seven in victories over Itawamba Community College and Southwest. He picked up fumbles in matchups with Coahoma Community College and Holmes Community College as well. He also blocked a punt in his debut contest against Pearl River Community College, which the Tigers won by a 17-14 score to spark their stellar year that led to a top 10 ranking in the final National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) poll. McMahon gives much of the credit for his rise to prominence at the collegiate level to Dustin Jones, who is the second longest tenured coach at Northeast behind only Davis and focuses primarily on the linebackers. “Coach Jones started believing in me and that’s all I really needed,” McMahon said. “He tells us what we’re supposed to do and when we do it right it works.” There is one big difference for McMahon this season compared to the 2016 campaign that saw

Location: Decatur, Miss. President: Dr. Billy W. Stewart Athletic Director: Chris Harris Conference: MACJC South Nickname: Warriors Primary Colors: Black/Gold Stadium: Bill & Louis Bailey Stadium Capacity: 5,000

the Tigers compile a 6-3 overall record. Experienced linebackers surrounded him last year in Demarcus Rogers, who is now at Southeast Missouri State University, and University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) signee Brenden Williams. However, the exact opposite is the case this year as McMahon is not just the lone starter, but the only linebacker at all returning from the previous season. Quentin Frazier of Hernando joins McMahon as a sophomore by class, but he transferred from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College where he played running back. The other four men on the two-deep depth chart – Curtis Bullock from Bentonia, Steven Means of Forest, Charles Ware from Forest and Sam Williams of Montgomery, Ala. – are all true freshmen. That means McMahon is thrust into a leadership role during his final campaign on the Booneville campus. It’s a chance that he relishes as he bolsters his resume in hopes of advancing to the four-year level. “I took all of them under my wing,” said McMahon. “They know what they’re supposed to be doing. I have faith in all of them getting on the field. We’re going to be really solid.” McMahon opened the 2017 season for the country’s ninth-ranked team with another sensational performance. He set a new career-high with nine tackles at Pearl River, which was second most in the game behind the 10 stops posted by the Wildcats’ Chase Crosby and Northeast’s Juwan Taylor. Nothing McMahon does ever surprises Davis, who also recognizes the DeSoto Central High School graduate as an invaluable asset to the program with 42 freshmen on its 55-man total roster. “I’ve always said playing and coaching 30 years, at the end of the day if you have heart, will over skill always performs,” he said. “He knows exactly where he’s gotta be. You expect him to do things a little bit bigger and better. He’s just an overall inspiration and leader for this football team.” McMahon notes that he is eagerly anticipating tonight’s home opener against reigning MACJC South Division champion East Central Community College. “There’s nothing like a Thursday night in Booneville, Mississippi,” he said. “The atmosphere around here is just totally different. I’m looking forward to the freshmen guys being able to experience it.”
