PLAYER FEATURE: QUARTERBACK CLINT WILSON All Clint Wilson needed was a chance. After breaking his ankle in the Mississippi High School Activities Association’s (MHSAA) Class 5A North Half semi-finals, the Olive Branch record holder was looking at walking on at a four-year university. Fortunately, fate had other plans in store for the signal caller. “I came over here (Northeast) with one of my wide receivers,” Wilson said. “I fell in love with it here and decided this is where I wanted to be.” That chance has turned into a promising career for Northeast’s second-year quarterback as Wilson looks to lead the Tigers back to the North Division championship. Northeast last captured the North Division in 2004 and 2005 – the latter being a 7-0 regular season after Hurricane Katrina washed out the first two games of the year. Wilson hopes that a year under center in one of the toughest junior college football leagues in the nation has given him the experience to take the Tigers back to the top of the league and contend for a state championship. “It was a great learning experience,” Wilson said of his first year. “The speed of the game was unreal. My first game, it took me a couple of plays to get used to how fast the game was.” Wilson adapted well to the league and became a threat for the Tigers in 2009. In addition to running back Jeremy Cannon who ran for over 1,000 yards on the season, Wilson also broke the 1,000-yard plateau passing completing 139-of-247 for 1,232 yards and 10 touchdowns for the Tigers. Wilson got the start under center every game during his freshman year and carries an 11-game community college starting streak into the Tigers’ matchup with Mississippi Delta. During his freshman season, Wilson saw his share of bumps and bruises along the way. With the Tigers finishing 2-7 on the year, Wilson knew it was time to step up. Northeast scored wins over Holmes and rival Itawamba during Wilson’s first year under center but lost five games in either overtime or by less than seven points. Wilson’s first-ever collegiate game saw the Tigers take perennial power Hinds into overtime only to see the Eagles claw back in the extra session for a 20-7 decision. A good English writer might call that foreshadowing but Wilson matured from that loss. A four-overtime homecoming thriller against Coahoma and an overtime against East Central saw two more losses added to the total while the Tigers dropped a seven-point decision to Mississippi Delta and in the season finale took all that the high-powered Northwest offense could dish out but walked out of Senatobia on the short-end of a 17-14 decision. “I wasn’t used to losing,” Wilson said. “It was hard – especially losing so many close games.” All of that served as motivation for Wilson as the Olive Branch native took the field for his second year under center for the Tigers. “I’m more vocal than I was last year,” Wilson said. “I feel like I was more of a lead-by-example person last year. I still am, I’m 6

Quarterback Clint Wilson threw for over 1,200 yards as a freshman for the Tigers and opened up the 2010 season with a 271-yard performance against East Central.

just more vocal.” In the 2010 season opener, Northeast found a new offense under co-offensive coordinators Brad Boyette and John Darnell to the tune of 325 yards. After seeing Cannon rush for over 1,000 yards in the 2009 season, Northeast offense took to the air against East Central. Northeast finished the night with 325 yards of total offense on just 55 plays and ripped off six yards per play when it had the ball. Wilson’s lead-by-example attitude showed when the secondyear signal caller came out on fire throwing for over 270 yards and four scores as the Tigers opened the 2010 season with a 34-6 win against East Central on Thursday, September 2. “It was great to get that first win under our belt,” Wilson said. “I think it is going to be contagious for us.” Ever the leader, Wilson was quick to shy the praise away from himself and share it with his teammates. “My offensive line played amazing,” Wilson said. “My receivers caught balls and made plays. I can’t say enough about them.” Wilson’s offensive line helped the quarterback get comfortable in the pocket and gave Wilson time to pick apart the East Central defense to the tune of an 18-for-35 night, 271 yards and four scores – all four scores came in the first half as the Tigers built a 28-6 halftime advantage. Offensive lineman like Robert Arant (6-4, 290, Oxford), Kendall Kelly (6-6, 305, Gainesville, Fla.), Antonio Foster (6-4, 300,

NORTHEAST MISSISSIPPI COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Tiger Valdosta, Ga.), Derryan Ryce (5-10, 265, Shannon) and Dustin Winsted (6-1, 305, Tuscumbia) only gave up one sack against the Warriors and allowed Wilson the time he needed to allow big plays to develop like a long touchdown strike to Donte Barksdale (Southaven) in the second quarter. Wilson hit three different wide receivers for touchdowns in the season opener. Wilson connected with Troy University transfer Josh Jarboe twice in the first quarter on a pair of short scores as the Tigers raced out to a 14-0 advantage and spread the wealth around when he hit Jonathan Johnson (West Helena, Ark.) and Barksdale on a pair of second quarter scores as the Tigers built a 28-6 halftime advantage. “Wilson looked great running the offense,” said Northeast head football coach Ricky Smither. “It always helps when you got time to throw the ball and our offensive line did a fantastic job giving Clint time to execute.” Wilson kept the Warrior defense on its heels as he connected with six different receivers on the night – Matt Cook (Kossuth), Jaquise Cook (Ripley), Brynden Trawick (Atlanta) Barksdale, Johnson and Jarboe. Wilson knows there is a difference between the 2009 Tigers and this year’s club. “I believe our preparation is so much better this year,” Wilson said. “We are closer as a team than last year.” Wilson, who plans to be a coach after receiving his degree, knows that it takes more than a season opening win to achieve a team’s goals and the Tiger quarterback is willing to put in the

FOOTBALL extra effort to see that Northeast reaches those goals. “I believe we should set our goals as high as they can take us,” said Wilson, “winning the North Division, going to play for a state championship and winning that as well are only a few.”
