THREE NORTHEAST LINEMEN SECURE PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN ACCOLADES

A collection of big men on the Northeast Mississippi Community College football team have secured national recognition ahead of their promising sophomore years.

The trio of Neil Sledge, Cameron Stancil and Terrell Washington obtained Preseason All-American honors from two different online publications. Stancil and Washington were firstteam honorees by JUCOWeekly while Sledge received second-team distinction from the Rivals recruiting network website JCGridiron.

Sledge and Stancil protected for an offense last fall that racked up 312.2 yards per game. The Tigers also averaged 27.2 points, which ranked inside the top 20 in the entire country at the two-year level. They were everyday starters during

their freshmen campaigns for Northeast. Sledge (6-4, 310 pounds) saw action at right guard while Stancil (6-5, 275 pounds) got the nod at left tackle.

Both had prosperous high school senior seasons. Sledge represented Ola in the Georgia Elite Classic All-Star Game while Stancil was a Mississippi Scoreboard All-Metro selection at Madison Central.

“Neil has made a lot of strides over the last nine-to-ten months,” said Northeast head coach Greg Davis. “He’s gotten a lot better with his technique and his maturity. Overall, he’s going to provide a lot of leadership in that o-line room.

“The same thing with Cameron. He has a lot of football intelligence. He’s a kid that has some athletic ability and can work in space. He provided a lot of good

pass protection for us last year.”

Washington joins the Tigers after transferring from NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) member Hampton (Va.) University. He recorded three tackles and a sack in his collegiate debut with the Pirates at the University of Maine.

He helped Heritage High School reach the 2022 Virginia High School League (VHSL) Class 3 state championship contest. Washington was the Seminole District and Region 3C Defensive Player of the Year with 66 total tackles.

“I’m really pumped up about him and the way he produces on a daily basis,” Davis said. “He’s a guy that’s come in and shown a lot of dedication and passion and a lot of energy that our defensive unit needs.”

REIGNING CONFERENCE CHAMPION TIGERS

RECEIVING COMMEMORATIVE RINGS TONIGHT

The 2023-24 edition of the Northeast Mississippi Community College men’s basketball team is reuniting once more to commemorate its exceptional year.

The Tigers will receive their state championship rings on Thursday, August 29 during a ceremony at halftime of football’s opening game against East Central Community College.

“It’s going to be special to cap that season off,” said Tigers headman Cord Wright. “This group will always be remembered for as long as Northeast will be here. Sometimes it wasn’t the prettiest, but they got it done. We had tremendous leadership.”

Northeast president Dr. Ricky Ford and athletic director Kent Farris will present the rings to the coaches, student-athletes plus support staff on the field at Tiger Stadium before the traditional performance by the Showband from Tigerland.

The bands were created by manufacturer Balfour. The head features Northeast’s “NE” logo on top of a basketball made of diamonds along with the phrase “MACCC CHAMPIONS.”

One shoulder includes a replica of the new Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC)

trophy design. The other has customized locations for a name and position to go with the Tigers’ final record of 27-5 etched into the base.

It was the eighth men’s basketball conference title in school history and the second in the last four years. Northeast has captured six championships between the division, state and region levels over the previous decade under Wright.

The Tigers built momentum in the fall semester by winning 13 of their 14 contests prior to the Christmas break. Northeast’s average margin of victory during that impressive stretch was 21 points.

The games were much closer for the Tigers upon their return from the holidays. All but one of Northeast’s 11 total

conference wins were by single digits, including five by just one possession.

The Tigers scored more than 100 points four times, which is the most since the 2015-16 campaign. Northeast produced a season-high 138 points against the Royal Ambassadors postgraduate program in early January. Northeast clinched its share of the MACCC title with a thrilling 78-73 triumph over Pearl River Community College on March 7th inside legendary Bonner Arnold Coliseum. CJ Williams helped the Tigers secure the dub with 11 critical second half points.

Sophomores for Northeast were Kam Carter of New Albany, Allen Hughes of Clinton, Caleb Parr of Columbus and Williams of Fort Worth, Texas.

The Tigers’ freshmen were Tyler Byrd of Memphis, Tenn., James Dukes of Booneville, Ronnie Ellis of New Haven, Conn., Josh Holman of Jackson, Terrence Marco of Charleston and Tyler Shephard of Pontotoc. Byrd became the first Northeast rookie in 27 years to earn All-American accolades from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Hughes and Parr joined him as all-conference selections.
