NEMCC Foundation Annual Report - FY 2023

Page 1

ANNUAL REPORT

FISCAL YEAR 2023

Introduction “

The NEMCC Development Foundation is grateful to all those who have joined in our mission to solicit and receive gifts to support students, faculty and administration at Northeast Mississippi Community College. Sharing in our mission provides all of us with a wonderful opportunity to work together to transform both the College and our students lives.

The assistance provided through the Foundation lowers barriers to a higher education and changes the lives of those students who cannot afford to attend college. It will change the life of the student who is working full-time and taking courses at night. It will change the life of the single mother who is attending NEMCC in order to make life better for her family. More than this, by changing these lives, we will also change our community. Many of the individuals who receive Foundation assistance will someday serve as leaders in our community.

Education frees; but education, as we all know, is not free. In order to bridge the gap between the cost of tuition and NEMCC students ability to pay, we call on alumni, friends, and neighbors to invest in the College and the community. We also call upon our corporate and business community to partner with us to make the academic and career dreams of NEMCC students become a reality.

I hope you will join with me and the many others who have already made gifts in support of so many deserving students.

Sincerely,

D.

Dr. Ricky G. Ford President of Northeast Mississippi Community College
D. Patrick Eaton, MBA, CFRE VP of Institutional Advancement & Foundation Executive Director
Tiffany Johnson, CEOE Foundation Financial Officer
Lexie Fields, MBA Foundation Scholarship Specialist

The Northeast Mississippi Community College Development Foundation, Inc., a non-profit corporation, has worked and will continue working to strengthen the college through its private fund raising efforts. The Foundation solicits and receives gifts to support students, faculty and administration for Northeast Mississippi Community College.

This report includes many impressive statistics on the Foundation’s growth, as well as analysis of how these activities have occurred. More important, the following pages illustrate the growing need for all Northeast Mississippi Community College and how donors, alums, and businesses are working with us to meet that need. While the information told here accounts for only a small portion of Northeast’s large impact in providing higher educational opportunities in Northeast Mississippi; all can take great pride in the achievements highlighted in this report.

Purchase a piece of hardwood as an original part of the historic Bonner Arnold Coliseum court, used by Northeast Mississippi Junior/Community College from 1951 until 2024.

The last game played on the court happened on March 11, 2024. The Bonner Arnold Coliseum, in Booneville, Mississippi, stands as a cornerstone of athletic tradition and community spirit for over seven decades.

Crafted by the skilled hands of the Northeast Mississippi Junior College’s Trades Training group, this court bore witness to countless moments of triumph and camaraderie. From thrilling victories to heartfelt defeats, its surface echoed the passion and dedication of generations of athletes and fans alike.

A limited number of tiles are available. First come first serve availability.

The Northeast Mississippi Community College athletic department brought back two of its longtime offerings that have produced several successful champions in the past. Northeast reinstated its men’s and women’s tennis programs following a four-year layoff. The Lady Tigers and Tigers officially returned to head-to-head competition during the 2021-22 academic year.

Northeast has four tennis courts on campus nestled between the Haney Union, Ramsey Hall and the aquatics center. They are the only courts available for use in the entire county. Local high schools such as Booneville and New Site utilize these courts for their practices and “home” matches.

We are excited about the “Game.Set.Match.” Tennis Complex Capital Gifts Campaign. This beautiful complex will be built just west of Tiger Stadium and have 8 courts and 4 seating pavilions. Would you consider making a gift to this campaign? No gift is too large or too small.

COMPLEX: $100,000

The tennis complex has been named “The Tiger Tennis Complex”

As we have in past Capital Giving Campaigns, we need you, our alumni, donors, and community friends, to step onto the court and come together to help us reach this milestone. The Northeast Mississippi Community College Development Foundation is proud to be an active part of the Northeast family. This past year we worked with many different divisions, offices, individuals, and organizations across campus to participate in events. We believe part of our role in helping the community is to have a presence in the lives of our students, faculty, staff, and community members. Some of the events we were able to be part of this year included the homecoming activities, Sports & Alumni Hall of Fame Banquet, athletic events, the TigerTown Tailgate, military appreciation night, pep rallies, and an Exceptional Night of Baseball.

THANK YOU FOR BEING PART OF THE

After a week chalked full of events, Bennett and the rest of her court were officially presented at a pep rally in their honor on Thursday, October 5 on the lawn in front of the Ramsey Student Services Building before Homecoming festivities kicked into full force later that afternoon.

Northeast Mississippi Community College’s Sports Hall of Fame was conceived in the interest of recognizing coaches, athletes, and administrators who coached and/or played or were loyal supporters of Northeast athletics.

Acknowledging the fact that there have been many outstanding athletes who have contributed greatly to the sports programs at Northeast through the years, Northeast wished to begin a program of recognition whereby individuals may be recognized for their contributions to athletics at Northeast Mississippi Community College.

By-Laws for the Sports hall of Fame were drafted and approved by a committee made up of coaches, fans, and members of the Northeast Board of Trustees in 2007. The framework was established to recognize ten individuals the first year and up to five individuals each year thereafter.

During its inaugural Sports Hall of Fame class, Northeast inducted Harold T. White, W.B. “Bill” Ward, Ken Lindsey, Chuck “Doodle” Floyd, Gene Garrett, Adrian Smith, Kenneth “Cat” Robbins, David “Nub” Strickland, Earline “Woodsie” Woods and Bonner Arnold as members.

Congratulations to the newest members of the Northeast Mississippi Community College Sports Hall of Fame.

2023 SPORTS HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

JOHNNY PAYTON

(Basketball, 1985-87)

Johnny Payton made the transition from W.P. Daniel High School in New Albany to Northeast alongside his hall of fame coach, Harvey Childers, in the fall of 1985.

Childers and Payton found themselves as state champions during their inaugural year with the Tigers. The Tigers also defeated Mississippi Delta to capture the north division crown on their path to the state title.

Payton reached double figures in 19 of his first 20 appearances at Northeast and 46 times overall. He totaled 885 points over 55 games for the Tigers, which comes to 16.1 points per contest.

Northeast broke a three-decade drought between national tournament berths during the 1986-87 campaign. Payton had 14 points to help the Tigers get past Jones for the region championship.

Payton also distributed the ball to his talented teammates effectively as a sophomore. He averaged 6.4 assists per game, which is tied for the second most in a single season in program history.

He signed a basketball scholarship with the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). Payton started for Childers at guard for six straight years between Northeast and W.P. Daniel.

FRED STAFFORD

(Basketball, 1987-89)

Just like his brother and fellow hall of famer Maurice, success has followed Fred Stafford wherever the sport of basketball has taken him throughout life.

That trend started in earnest as a student-athlete at Northeast where he was part of the special 1989 region champion and national runner-up team under coach Harvey Childers.

Stafford reached double figures during 27 of the Tigers’ 35 games that season. He saved his best performances for matchups with CoLin, including a back-and-forth 111100 victory in the NJCAA Region 23 finals in which Stafford chipped in a solid 19 points.

The Rienzi native totaled 822 points over 66 appearances in a black-andgold uniform, which comes to 12.5 points per game. Northeast went a combined 59-7 during Stafford’s tenure, including a perfect 24-0 regular season record during the 1987-88 campaign.

While Stafford missed out on capturing a national championship with the Tigers, he did not let a second opportunity go to waste two years later while at UNA.

Stafford led a second half surge by the Lions, who finished off Bridgeport (Conn.) by a score of 7972 at the Springfield Civic Center to win the NCAA Division II title. He was the CBS Player of the Game with a team-best 24 points.

BRYNDEN TRAWICK

(Football, 2010)

Brynden Trawick made history as the first former Northeast football player to compete in the Pro Bowl game. He landed his spot at the end of the 2017 season by becoming an elite defender in kickoff and punt return coverage for the Tennessee Titans.

He spent seven seasons in the NFL, which is the third most among all Northeast alumni behind only Mario Addison and Jerome Woods. Trawick made four playoff appearances, including in his final year as Baltimore captured the 2019 AFC North Division championship.

The Marietta, Ga., native participated in 97 NFL games excluding the preseason with 47 of those coming in a Ravens uniform. His cumulative statistics include 87 takedowns, three quarterback hits, two pass break ups and two tackles for loss.

Trawick opened his collegiate career at Michigan State University before transferring to Northeast for his sophomore campaign in 2010. Trawick earned second-team all-conference honors after accumulating 62 tackles, including three for loss, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and a pick-six.

Trawick continued his journey on the gridiron at Troy (Ala.) University. He was an All-Sun Belt Conference (SBC) recipient following both of his seasons with the Trojans.

2023 ALUMNI HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE Barbara Shackelford

Beginning with her days as a student at the Northeast Mississippi Junior College, Booneville native Barbara Shackelford has had a close association with Northeast, and as a result has been selected as the 2023 Alumni Hall of Fame inductee.

A Booneville High School graduate, Shackelford attended Northeast 1967-68 and was the editor of the student newspaper, The Beacon.

As alumnae, Shackelford continued to serve Northeast and her path eventually brought her back to campus in 1982 as a recruiter. She was named director of Public Information by then president Harold T. White in 1987. Her title changed to Associate Vice-President of Public Information in 2000. She was a member of the President’s Cabinet and Administrative Council.

During her professional time on campus, Barbara also served as Secretary for Alumni Affairs (19912006), Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Adviser (2002-2011), director of the Miss NEMCC Pageant (1999-2007), and was named an honorary member of the Northeast’s Iota Zeta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa honor society by the student chapter.

To put the final touches on commemorating its 75th anniversary year, Northeast hosted a "Night of Celebration" on Tuesday, May 21, 2024.

College president Dr. Ricky G. Ford's look back over the history of the college will serve as the event's feature presentation.

"In the beginning, Northeast was a symbol of hope for the people of northeast Mississippi who aspired to achieve higher education," Ford said, "and for many people, it remains so even today. We take that responsibility very seriously, as I know the administrators, faculty and staff that came before us did as well. It's also something to celebrate and we have been honored to lead that celebration throughout the last year, but we're also excited about what the future holds for Northeast. We're just getting started."

Also included in the program were remarks from Patrick Eaton, VP of Institutional Advancement and Northeast Development Foundation Executive Director. Eaton highlighted the ongoing "88 Keys Campaign," a fundraising effort sponsored by the Foundation to secure the funds necessary to bring a Steinway Spirio concert piano to Northeast. "We have had numerous donors take the opportunity to invest in our athletic programs by contributing to building campaigns for a new football fieldhouse, baseball/softball complex and in the near future a tennis complex," Eaton said. "Now is a great time to invest in our fine arts division by helping the college secure the funding needed to purchase this Steinway & Sons Spirio piano."

Gabriel Statom of Steinway Pianos was on hand and with a "Spirio" on campus for the occasion, Dr. Harris conducted a live demonstration accompanied by members of the Northeast Fine Arts faculty. The demonstration performance is designed to put on display the technological advances this instrument will make available to Northeast students, faculty, staff and alumni.
