Basketball
Player Feature: Bree Harris & Kareem Brown Basketball is all about a game of transitions. Whether it is transitioning from an offensive mindset on one end of the floor to a defensive one on the other end, transitions are an integral part of the game. Sophomore Lady Tiger guard Bree Harris of New Site and freshman Tiger guard Kareem Brown have found out that the transitions happen not only on the hardwood but off the court as well as each has had to get accustom to transitions in their roles as Northeast basketball players. For Harris, the transition this year has been the one of transforming into a mentor for the younger players while Brown has had to change his cleats to running shoes as he transitions from the gridiron to the hardwood. No matter what the transition might bee, Harris and Brown have found success in their given area of expertise. Harris, who concentrates on biology while at Northeast, found her roles change from her freshman year to her sophomore campaign. During her first year with the Lady Tigers, Harris was transitioning from a high school senior to one of a freshman in one of the most competitive leagues in America and while the transition might have been rough, Harris was more than able to meet the task at hand. Bree Harris Harris, a 5-7 guard, was named the 2010 Cellular South Scholar Athlete for the Class 2A state championship game at the Mississippi High School Activities Association’s (MHSAA) state tournament in the spring of 2010 in Jackson. “Every team, you play is good,” Harris said. “It’s different preparation. You can’t have a bad game…they will capitalize. In high school, you could play bad and still win.” Harris, however, said academics kept her on track. “I always put school first,” Harris said. “I was pretty much prepared. I took college classes my senior year.” Harris finished her academic career at New Site with a 4.0 grade point average and was valedictorian of her class. But as a sophomore on the Lady Tiger team, Harris now has the added responsibility of guiding the Lady Tiger freshmen on and off the court. “You have more expectation as a sophomore,” Harris said. “You have to step up and fill your role.” While many believe the role of a basketball player ends when they step off the hardwood, Harris knows that that is only half the role as a Lady Tigers. First-year women’s head coach Brian Alexander not only expects his players to excel on the court but in the classroom as well. “It’s on and off the court,” Harris said. “You have to be a leader to
the freshmen.” For Brown, the Northeast freshmen is going through the same thing that Harris witnessed last year as the former New Albany standout moves from being a high school senior to a freshmen on the nation’s seventeenth-ranked team. However, Brown has had one more transition in his nine months at Northeast. Not only is Brown having to learn how to deal with setting a schedule that includes practice and game times along with all his academic responsibilities but Brown is having to transition from one sport to another. Brown helped lead the Tiger football team to one of its most successful seasons in school history as the Tiger football team advanced to the first round of the Mississippi Association of Community/Junior Colleges (MACJC) state football playoffs. Now, Brown has to make the move from running on grass or an artificial surface to running on the hardwood with his teammates. “For football, I was heavy on my running,” Brown said. “For basketball, it’s short bursts – back and forth, back and fourth. It’s more of a physical thing.” While Brown has had to make the transition from football to basketball, the Northeast freshman is not alone in his challenge. Currently, there are two other members of the Northeast Tiger Kareem Brown football team that are sharing in Brown’s pain – quarterback J.R. Jennings of Calhoun City and defensive lineman Lavon Hooks of Atlanta, Georgia, have both had to make the transition from the gridiron to the hardwood. However, Brown has found solace in the change and uses the challenge to get better. “When you come to junior college, you have to be more mentally prepared and come every day to work,” Brown said. “There is always someone just as good as you – if not better than you – and if they are always working as hard as you, you have just got to come in every day and compete.” While competing against each other in practice is one thing, when game time comes Brown knows there is another transition that needs to happen. “Basketball at Northeast is intense at every level,” Brown said. “You have to come in focused and intense every day. It’s a big transition.” While the transition from a high school senior to a collegiate freshman can be hard or the transition from a college freshman to a sophomore can be even more challenging, Brown and Harris know that it is with that experience that will help them to accomplish their goals that they setforth on and off the hardwood. Brown summed it up as, “We are starting to bonding together and getting the chemistry and it is coming together better.”
