Player Feature: Amber Johnson & Nick Tate For Northeast sophomores, Nick Tate and Amber Johnson the decision to join the Tiger and Lady Tiger basketball programs was relatively simple. Both wanted to join a program that had an established winning tradition. Tate, who was coached by Northeast alumni Craig Dailey at Marshall Academy, knew that by having Dailey as a coach, the Tigers were where he wanted to continue his playing career. “Coach Dailey, he played at Northeast and told me about Coach (David) Robbins,” Tate said. “I got a chance to talk with Coach Robbins and I liked the coaching staff with Coach (Maurice) Stafford here.” Johnson, who played at Pine Grove High School and claims Hinkle as a hometown, the decision to come to Northeast was easier than Tate’s decision. “It’s close to my hometown,” Johnson said. “It’s not far from my house and it gave me the opportunity to play basketball.” A desire for a winning tradition came from both Johnson and Tate’s respective high schools. Johnson helped lead the Lady Amber Johnson Panthers to the Mississippi High School Activities Association’s (MHSAA) Class 1A State Tournament in Jackson during her junior year and Pine Grove established a desire to win in Johnson early on by starting her freshman year 13-0 and her sophomore year 18-0 before recording its first loss of the year. Dailey made sure a winning tradition was instilled in Tate during his time at Marshall Academy and during the 2008 season, Tate helped lead the Patriots to the Mississippi Private School Association’s (MPSA) Class AA State Tournament at Indianola Academy after leading the Patriots to the Class AA North Half Championship. The opportunity for a quality education and the total college experience was not lost on Tate or Johnson. While both have made their marks on the court, the two have also joined in the fun of college life enjoying
the activities that Northeast offers to students. Johnson was a member of the 2010 Homecoming court while Tate said, “I try to come a lot of the activities that Northeast has to offer and support Northeast the best I can.” Even though Northeast offers a wide variety of activities away from the hardwood, it is on the court where Johnson and Tate spend most of their time at the college. “I have to be a leader and be more mature than I was last year,” Tate said. “The freshman are coming up and we need to help show them what to do and what coach needs them to do for us to win.” Johnson, a guard, had to get used to getting a shot off in a certain amount of time when she came to Northeast but over the last year, that problem has been rectified. “I have more experience and I learned a lot,” Johnson said about her freshman year. “It has taught me the speed of the game and with the shot clock, it is a lot different from playing in high school.” For Tate, the challenge is simple; “We are working hard and taking it one game at a time. Our Nick Tate goals are to win the North Division and get to Hutchinson, Kansas (National Tournament).” “We have to come together as a team and learn as a team,” Johnson said. “No game is going to be perfect and we have to improve every game.” Both philosophies lead to the same result of a winning tradition at Northeast and with Tate and Johnson, David Robbins’ Tigers and Ricky Ford’s Lady Tigers are poised for success. That success from both Tate and Johnson has been evident as Tate drained the winning shot against Holmes Community College during his freshman year while Johnson and the Lady Tigers knocked off Itawamba Community College in front of a packed Bonner Arnold Coliseum her first year at Northeast.
