Player Feature: Tiffany Martin & Tyrie Berry When one comes to college, there are different sights and sounds to distract one from their ultimate goal at the post-high school level and it is the job of sophomores to help guide those along the way and shine a light on the path ahead. Northeast Lady Tiger guard Tiffany Martin, of Olive Branch and Tiger forward Tyrie Berry, of Ripley have taken that guiding light to a new level with their chosen professions after basketball. While both are concentrating on physical education at Northeast, Martin has a secondary track of wanting to be a mathematics teacher when her playing career is done while Berry is more of an animal lover, planning to become a veterinary technician following his basketball days. “When I get to the Division I side, I just want to be a veterinary technician,” Berry said. “I just love animals…dogs, and the environment. I am more of a people person but whatever comes my way, I will take it.” However, as sophomores Martin and Berry know that there is one thing that needs to be taken care of before they leave the Northeast campus… the freshmen. Martin is a true sophomore while Berry is back for his third year with the Tigers after suffering a lower extremity injury during the 2010-11 preseason Tiffany Martin and having to sit out for the entire year last year. “It’s a leadership role,” Martin said. “We have to help (the freshmen) with getting to their classes and their homework. Being a sophomore is a big role.” Berry echoed Martin’s statement and in his third year at Northeast, Berry has found time to appreciate the things he overlooked as a freshman. “I have enjoyed everything…the teachers, students, the games and the overall environment,” Berry said. “Northeast has been great. The people are very nice. The games are very, very intense. It has been quite a time.” For both Berry and Martin, their time at Northeast came via their families. Both Martin’s mother and father are Northeast alumni while Berry was swayed with a personal visit from Northeast head men’s basketball coach David Robbins. “It’s a family-oriented school,” Martin said. “Both my mom and dad went here and I’ve been playing AAU here most of my life.” “I had really been thinking about coming to Northeast,” Berry said. “I had a visit by David Robbins and it was a surprising thought that I would be playing at Northeast.” It’s those little moments in life that have helped both Martin and Berry enjoy their time at Northeast. While their first year(s) in Booneville were used to orientate themselves with the campus,

as the seasons changed so did the maturity level in each and both have seen things they did not notice as freshmen. “I go and enjoy my time,” Martin said. “I like to hang with friends and go to events around school like the plays, dances… whatever the school offers and make new friends.” “I try to get more rest and balance my time with school, work and basketball,” Berry said. “I’ve been trying to have more fun and stay healthier with the weather. It is actually more responsibility.” While growing up is normal for any college student away from their parents, Berry and Martin have also had to grow up on the basketball court as well and are looked upon to lead the Tigers and Lady Tigers, respectively. Martin and her teammates spend time together before games just trying to relax. “We are dancing and cracking jokes,” Martin said. “We are just trying to get everyone out of their ‘Goosebump’ stage.” Berry, a 6-6 forward, is trying to focus on one thing during his last season with the Tigers. “Right now, we are taking it day-by-day and working on our faults to get better,” Berry said. “That’s what is in front of us… we need to be prepared, stay mentally focused and not jump off track.” Berry, a 5-5 point guard, Tyrie Berry knows that with her sophomore status comes more responsibility under first-year head coach Brian Alexander. “It’s a lot of pressure to tell people where to go and to understand the plays,” Martin said. “I’ve been a point guard all of my life so I am used to it. People look up to you.” As a point guard, Martin is the main person in charge of running the Lady Tigers offense. “You have to be patient, see the floor and know when to give the ball to the right person at the right time,” Martin said. Berry said that it is the Northeast culture that helps him and the Tiger basketball team succeed especially coming off an injury. “Everyone here gave me courage,” Berry said. “The coaches, my teammates and former teammates. I enjoy my time here and am looking forward to my future.” However, Martin and Berry know that to succeed each player has to do their own part. “We are trying to stay in the top four and have a chance to play for a ring,” Martin said. “(Our team) wants a ring. We are trying to get better and in a spot to get that ring.” Berry, who has been through the ups and downs of a college athlete’s career, summed it all up simply as...“We need to take it on game at a time. Put God first and we should be fine.”
