Player Feature: Bree Harris & Cedric Janes Education is everything. Whether a person is starting out in pre-school or just retired from working a 40-hour-a-week job for 40, 50 or 60 years straight and learning how to adjust to not having to go to work everyday, education is everything. For Northeast freshman guard Bree Harris of New Site and freshman forward Cedric Janes of Dyersburg, Tenn., education has come in all forms and shapes during their short lifetimes. For Harris, it was learning that one doesn’t start from where they want to be, but it is a steady progression to the pinnacle of one’s desires. For Janes, the education process has helped the six-foot, six-inch freshman discover things about himself that he never knew was there until doors were opened for him. “Whenever I was big enough to pick up a ball, my brother and my dad wouldn’t let me shoot a three until I was an eighth grader in high school,” Harris said. “They wanted my form to be good.” Harris’ education process didn’t stop at just developing her form, it was about learning to shoot from anywhere on the floor. “I had to shoot one-handed and couldn’t through it up two-handed like the other kids in school,” Harris said. “I started off at one foot away and gradually worked my way back.” Harris’ education came also via the 10foot high regulation basketball goal and not an adjustable one like some athletes start out playing on. Janes’ basketball education came at an early age as well when he started in a tourBree Harris nament in northern Tennessee. “I started playing when I was six,” Janes said. “It was a small tournament my dad helped get me into in Ripley, Tenn. I played for my third grade teacher.” Early education is where Harris and Janes’ stories diverge along the hardwood. Harris split her time at New Site High School between the basketball courts and the academic life while Janes focused on basketball. Harris, a 5-7 guard, was named the 2010 Cellular South Scholar Athlete for the Class 2A state championship game at the Mississippi High School Activities Association’s (MHSAA) state tournament in the spring of 2010 in Jackson. Harris, who has a pre-medicine biology area of concentration at Northeast, said that academics kept her on track. “I always put school first,” Harris said. “I was pretty much prepared. I took college classes my senior year.” Harris finished her academic career at New Site with a 4.0 grade point average and was valedictorian of her class. On the hardwood, Janes developed into a man amongst boys. During his freshman year in high school, Janes was already six-feet, three-inches tall and topping the scales at 350 pounds. Those stats are great for a football player, which Janes was at that time, but the former defensive tackle, knew that to be able to excel at the game he loved, the pounds had to go.

“All the way through high school, I was always big and tall,” Janes said. “I was huge. I was always the big man.” Janes’ mindset and body changed dramatically between his freshman and sophomore years of high school. “My high school coach said I was too big,” Janes said “I needed to lose weight. It was a whole bunch of running, working out and getting up early and working by myself and after I got finished running, I had to go to the gym and run some more.” For Janes, the transformation started with dropping almost 100 pounds between his ninth and tenth grade seasons, but it was a change of scenery that set his mind right. “My first two years in high school was basically just finish high school and do something with your life,” Janes said. “Then I moved to Dyer County and everything started to look up. I got a scholarship and I never thought I would be playing ball in school in college.” While Janes had to modify his body to fit his game, Harris’ game came easy to her. “Shooting always came naturally and I really didn’t have to do much else,” Harris. “That’s why the transition has been so hard because I really didn’t have to dribble or have to defend so I have had to work on my ball handling and learning how to defend.” While both their basketball educations progressed, the opportunities to continue their academic educations also increased Cedric Janes and for Harris, the decision was simple. “Coach Ford has a very good reputation,” Harris said. “This whole program is prestigious. To be honest, I want a state championship since I didn’t get one in high school.” “I never planned on going to school so my grades weren’t up,” said Janes. “After talking with my parents and coaches, it turned out to be a pretty good idea and it’s been a pretty good idea so far. Hopefully I can get a scholarship to go to a bigger school and play my heart out there too.” Dedication is what drives both Harris and Janes in their pursuits on and off the basketball courts. And just as a change of scenery helped focus Janes in high school, a change of scenery to Booneville has helped the freshman forward discover a new love for education. “I never thought of myself as a smart guy,” Janes said. “When I got here and found out all you have to do is study, I found out I was pretty good at math. I never knew that and it’s pretty easy. That came a lot easier than my game is coming.” While Janes is trying to adjust to life off the basketball court, Harris is taking her academics to the hardwood and applying the concepts to the game. “Every team, you play is good,” Harris said. “It’s different preparation. You can’t have a bad game…they will capitalize. In high school, you could play bad and still win.” And with that education, both Janes and Harris are looking at using what they learn at Northeast to progress into the next step of their lives – whether it is on the hardwood or in the laboratory.
