Player Feature: Hillary Miller & John David Little Bonner Arnold Coliseum has been the home away from home for many athletes over the years, and for many athletes it is that cozy feel that draws them to Booneville. For Olive Branch’s John David Little and Booneville’s Hillary Miller, it was that sense of home that helpped the duo pick Northeast over other schools. Little’s quest to Bonner Arnold Coliseum came via Middle Tennessee State University, while Miller dreamed of continuing a family tradition. Little originally signed with Middle Tennessee State University out of Olive Branch High School, and spent a year in Murfreesboro, Tenn., before coming back to the Magnolia State and to a place that felt more like home. “I didn’t go home the entire year I was there,” Little said. “We had to stay at school and practice. I am a big family guy and never got to see them. “Coach (David) Robbins and my high school coach are real good friends,” Little explained. “Out of high school, I probably would have gone to Northwest, but when I came back it was between Itawamba, Gulf Coast and Northeast, and Gulf Coast is eight hours away. So it really came down to Itawamba or Northeast and I liked Coach Robbins.” Miller’s trek started later than Little’s basketball career, but both ended up in the same place due to that feeling of home that Northeast provides. “My high school coach, Bart Greenhaw, saw that I had potential,” Miller said. “Plus, my mom played here at Northeast.” For Miller, it was also a way to get some exercise. “My mom wanted me to be more acHillary Miller tive,” Miller said. “I was kind of a chubby kid. I really did not like basketball when I was young. I liked being the girly girl.” Miller’s career began as exercise while Little’s basketball occupation started very young in life at a local YMCA and progressed, but it was the transitions in high school that helped Miller and Little succeed. “The seniors on my high school team, there were like eight girls,” said Miller. “We wanted to go out and leave our mark. Everyone knew their role and the team had to work together to reach our goal.” Senior year also meant changes for Little’s high school career and with that the Conquistadors made a run at the Big House in Jackson and the Mis-

sissippi High School Activities Association’s (MHSAA) State Tournament. Change has also come as their seasons at Northeast have progressed. Miller has had to step into the role of a post player while Little is seeing productive minutes for the Tigers. Each one has accepted their role and learned from the process. “It is making me step up my game and play,” Miller said. “I have to suck it up and deal with whatever is going on when coach says he needs me.” “The speed of the game is faster and the athletes are bigger, faster and stronger,” Little said. “You have to come every day ready to play.” No matter what happens on the court, both Little and Miller know the classroom will affect them most during their basketball careers and that’s why each one puts in extra time to make sure that the classroom matches their level of play. “You have got to put more into it than high school,” Little said. “I have to do what I have to do to keep my grades up.” “At Booneville, academics were everything,” Miller said. “If you didn’t get the grades, you didn’t play.” With the classroom taken care of, it is up to Little and Miller to take care of their business on the hardwood. Little realizes it takes time to become skilled at the game, but the Olive Branch graduate has already proven himself at Middle Tennessee. Now, he just needs a chance. “I just need to get in and get productive minutes,” Little said. “If I need to John David Little bring the ball up the floor or shoot, I will.” While Little is willing to do anything that he is called upon to do, Miller is ready to become a well-rounded athlete to help her team win. “I don’t want to be a post player or a guard,” Miller said. “I want to be that person that knows how and is able to play everything. I can go as fast as any girl out there without the ball. I know ball handing is my weakness.” Nevertheless, with each athlete constantly trying to improve something, the ones that realize that the game away from the court will ultimately deliver a championship whether it is on the floor or in life. “I want to be the person that my teammates think of as the person that every time I went out on the court, that I was the one cheering them on,” Miller said, “I want to be the one out there that was doing the best I can.”
