Player Feature: Amber Jackson & Cedric Janes Sometimes all one needs is a fresh start to reach one’s full potential. Whether it is just a do-over or something more dramatic like a move to another area so that one may begin anew, a fresh start can help an individual accomplish his or her goals in life. That is just the case with Cedric Janes and Amber Jackson. Janes chose to come to Northeast Mississippi Community College from Dyersburg High School just north of Memphis along the Mississippi River while Jackson spent a year at Itawamba Community College in Fulton before looking for a fresh start with the Lady Tigers. For both Janes and Jackson, that fresh start has proved to be the right decision. Janes, who made the 125-mile one-way trek to Northeast in 2010, has found his niche’ amongst the Tiger big men while Jackson, a Tupelo native, made the short trip to Booneville in order to improve her game. Jackson has seen the more dramatic increase after her fresh start at Northeast. While at Itawamba in 2010-11, the former Tupelo graduate only appeared in 18 games and averaged 3.5 points a game. In just 12 games with the Lady Tigers under first-year head coach Brian Alexander, Jackson has become a phoenix of sorts rising from the ashes to average 13.8 points per game for the Lady Tigers and help keep Northeast in contention for the postseason. In just a dozen games with the Amber Jackson Lady Tigers, Jackson has either matched or out-produced her effort at Itawamba. In 18 games with the Lady Indians, Jackson had 31 rebounds, nine assists and four steals. In 12 games with the Lady Tigers, Jackson has pulled down 35 rebounds, has nine assists and came away with 12 steals so far. “I like the atmosphere here a lot better,” Jackson said. “Everyone that I knew from Tupelo went (to ICC). I know about three-fourths of the school and didn’t meet many new faces. Here, it’s a fresh start. I knew maybe two-to-three people.” Janes trip may have taken the Northeast sophomore further than just a two-hour drive from his family. At Northeast, Janes has been able to hone his game first as the Tigers’ go-to big man during his freshman season and now as the Tigers vocal leader during his second season in Booneville. “It is good to have someone to have my back,” Janes said. “Last year, we didn’t have too many big men and I was in the game a lot. It was tiring and hard to keep the energy going. Now we can get a rest and have people that come in with the same amount of energy for the entire game.” However, with that change, Janes has not let his production slip. During his first year with the Tigers, Janes led Northeast in total rebounds (171) and defensive rebounds (108) while averaging 8.6 points a game and 7.1 rebounds. In 11 games with the Tigers, Janes’ efforts have led the Northeast sophomore to an eight (8) points per game showing while coming away with 5.4 rebounds a night. He is second on the team with 59 rebounds. In 25 games with the Tigers in 2010-11, Janes came away with 20

steals—impressive for a 6-6 big man--and is on that same track this year with eight steals in 11 games for the Northeast. Janes has also seen a change in his role on the team with the addition of forwards Tadarious Coburn, Marcell Lucas, Devin Tillman and football defensive lineman Lavon Hooks-- along with the return of Tyrie Berry who was forced to sit out the 2010-11 season with an injury. “The role has changed a lot,” Janes said. “Last year, I thought of my role as being the only person that could go in and rebound and play down low but that has all changed because we have a lot more players that can do the same thing that I can and some of them can do it even better than I can.” However, with age comes maturity and while a more immature athlete might complain that with the addition of more players at the same position would cut down on one’s playing time and chances to impress the fouryear college/university scouts, Janes knows that it is the things that he can do on and off the court that will help the Tigers succeed in the long run. “I just do what I can,” Janes said. “I try to be a big cheerleader on the sidelines when I’m not in the game, and a big presence when I in the game and try to push my teammates forward.” Jackson comes from the same philosophy as Janes does when it comes to helping the Lady Tigers succeed. Whether it’s on or off the Cedric Janes court, the Northeast sophomore is there to push her teammates anyway possible to get the best effort out of each one of them and in the process, hopes to improve her game as well. “My role is to score from the guard spot,” Jackson said. “We have (Anna Brooke) in the post that can score. So I try to come in every day and work on my game and focus on my weaknesses like going to the goal.” For Jackson, who helped lead the Tupelo Golden Wave basketball team to nearly 40 wins in her final two years in the blue and gold, it does not matter where the former Tupelo standout hones her game at – and that was one of the reasons why Jackson said she had improved with the fresh start at Northeast. “The only difference is that their facility is nicer but I came to play ball,” Jackson said. “I don’t care how nice the gym is. As long as I have two goals and a basketball I am okay.” Jackson has been more than okay with her fresh start in Booneville raising her game by nearly 10 points a game but both Jackson and Janes know that basketball just like a change in scenery can be a stress reducer as well. “It is just like therapy for me,” Janes said. “I can go out there feeling awful and when I come out I am feeling a lot better.” No matter if it is a change of scenery or a stress reducer or just a fresh start in life, Jackson and Janes have found their new homes in Booneville more to their liking than their previous residences and both are poised to lead the Lady Tigers and Tigers to new heights with their new found careers.
