Player Feature: Erin Strowder & Robert Wade A player may change from a Jaguar or Panther to a Tiger and have a different hunting ground but the passion within still stays the same and the natural instinct still exists not matter where the player is located. New surroundings have become accustom for Erin Strwoder and Robert Wade. Strowder helped the Southwind High School women’s basketball team in Memphis, Tenn., become a varsity sport during her high school years while Wade was forced to take his talents all over the state of Tennessee during his senior year due to the Maplewood Comprehensive High School gymnasium facing renovations in Nashville. Both Strowder and Wade have become accustom to moving around to play but for the 2010-11 season each has found a home in Bonner Arnold Coliseum as part of the Lady Tiger and Tiger basketball teams, respectively. Regardless of their surroundings, Strowder and Wade have brought personal and team success wherever they have played. While helping Southwind join the AAA ranks in Tennessee, Strowder was able to garner the Best Offensive Player award, the Coach’s award and the best All-Around award for the Lady Jaguars. Wade became a 2010 Tennessee McDonalds’ All-American nominee while playing in neutral environments for the Panthers. During his time with Maplewood, Wade was named to the District 10 team as its Most Valuable Player and parlayed that success into the Region 5 AA team’s Most Valuable Player. Wade helped lead Maplewood to over 25 wins his senior season before falling to LibErin Strowder erty Tech in the second round of the Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association (TSSAA) State Tournament. For Strowder, basketball started early in life – at the age of seven – when she first discovered her love for the game. Strowder got her start early on following in her sister’s footsteps and tried to make her family proud on the hardwood. For Wade, the game didn’t begin until he was in middle school and in less than a year Wade was in the starting lineup at Maplewood. Strowder’s decision to come to Northeast was an easy one to make after considering her options. “Coach (Ricky) Ford made it seem like a good offer,” Strowder said. “ I
didn’t know if I was ready for a four-year college so I decided to come here to start off.” For Wade, who had grown up around the metropolis of Nashville, Booneville offered a getaway from the hustle of city life. “I love it here,” Wade said. “I’m a city boy but (Northeast) will keep me out of trouble. I felt comfortable around the people here and they were telling me things that were true and that I needed to hear.” While at Northeast, both Strowder and Wade have had to adjust their high school games to life in one of the most competitive junior college division’s in the nation but the transition has not been bad. “It is a lot faster,” Strowder said. “I realized I had to get with it. There was no easy way to do it.” “I didn’t expect that I was going to be able to come in here and do this,” Wade said. “I figured there would be more guys that were bigger and stronger than I am.” After finding a place to call home in Bonner Arnold Coliseum, both Strowder and Wade have become a fixture in the Lady Tiger and Tiger line-ups. Strowder is impressed by the way the Lady Tigers have come together as a team but knows that the road through the North Division will be a bumpy one. “We just need to continue winning,” Strowder said. “We have to continue to gel as a team and continue to win.” “I have got to get bigger and stronger,” Wade said. “I’ve got to improve on my ball handling and shooting abilities.” Robert Wade One thing Wade does not have to improve on is electrifying the crowd. Wade has already proven to be an aerial acrobat. “It benefits the crowd and the team,” Wade said of being able to showcase his skywalking skills. “Once the crowd gets hyped, we get hyped and it is on from there.” But while Strowder and Wade have finally found a home in Booneville, each knows that there will come a time that they will have to move on. Both have plans to play at the next level and continue to get their education. However in the meantime, a jaguar may come out of the jungle, a panther may find a new environment and the hunting ground may change. . . but the feline within stays the same and the passion is still there. For Strowder and Wade, the game of basketball will always be with them.
