Genovese makes good on second chance Nolan Genovese’s path to playing quarterback has taken many turns. From looking like former University of Hawaii gun-slinger Colt Brennan to sacking groceries at a local supermarket like former St. Louis Ram and Arizona Cardinal quarterback Kurt Warner, Genovese’s life has tossed him enough curves to make the former four-sport athlete ready for almost anything the defense can throw at him on the football field. Genovese, whose hometown is listed as Corinth but is originally from Nashville, moved back in with his grandparents after playing a season with Holmes Community College in Goodman during 2011. However, as his grandmother recovered from an injury, Genovese gave up the life of a quarterback for something more meaningful – a job. Genovese began to sack groceries at Gardner’s Supermarket in Corinth instead of throwing passes to help his grandfather. During that time, there was one thing that kept bothering the teenager. “I just felt like something was missing,” Genovese said. “That something was football. So I came down here and talked to Coach (Ricky) Smither, and he gave me another opportunity.” Genovese has not disappointed in that second opportunity to play on the collegiate level. Through the first six games with the Tigers, Genovese was 31-for-44 with a 70.5 pass percentage completion – which ranked him fourth in the nation at the time. However, it was his first start as a Tiger that impressed the Tiger Nation fans. In a 19-13 loss to then fourth-ranked Northwest, Genovese kept his cool and completed 20-of-25 passes for 143 yards. Nonetheless, Genovese knows that without a ‘break’ at Christ Presbyterian Academy in Nashville none of his collegiate plays in Mississippi would have been possible. “During my senior year, I pretty much dislocated my shoulder and lost interest from a lot of schools,” Genovese said. “The only real option I had was to be an in-state player at a junior college. So I moved to Corinth with my grandparents on my mom’s side and graduated from Corinth High School.” With the move, Genovese became eligible as an in-state quarterback for the 14 community and junior colleges that play football in the Magnolia State. 6

“Holmes gave me my first opportunity and without Holmes, I would not be here,” Genovese said. But being away from his family, drew Genovese back “home.” Genovese’s move back to Corinth and ultimately to Northeast made the trek on his family a little easier – instead of making the drive to Goodman or wherever Holmes played in 2011 – Genovese’s father, mother, step-mother and sister only have to make the three-anda-half hour drive down from Nashville for home games in Booneville. With family being so close, it is no wonder that the Northeast signal caller lists family as being one of the most important things in life. “God is first, always…He’s the reason we are here,” Genovese said. “Then it’s family second; third is friends…football falls between family and friends “Family is right behind God,” Genovese said. “They’ve always supported me in no matter what I have done. Last year they came to every game no matter where it was. This year…same thing.” It was the move from Nashville to Corinth that allowed Genovese to know his family a little better as well as giving him time with his maternal grandparents. However, Nashville has never left Genovese’s mind. From growing up playing four sports – football, basketball, baseball and hockey – to friends at Christ Presbyterian Academy, Genovese fondly remembers his time in ‘Music City.’ “That is where I was born and raised,” Genovese said. “I went there from my sopho-

I loved it there.” With his two main sports of football and basketball, Genovese also took up whatever sport was on the young man’s mind. If I was watching Mighty Ducks, I’d go out and play hockey,” Genovese explained. “If I was watching Space Jam, I’d play basketball; if I was watching Remember the Titans I would play football; just something like that.” Genovese even joined the traveling hockey team – Nashville Ice Tigers – during this time in Nashville. Family ties run deep with the Nashville native pointing out that he got his athletic ability from his dad who played at Holmes, then the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) and even clocked time with the United States Football League’s (USFL) Memphis Showboats. Not to be outdone, Genovese says his heart and passion come from his mother’s side of the family. With a professional athlete for a father and a mother in the country music industry, Genovese’s athletic ability and passion has allowed him to take on whatever the football world has thrown him and the Tiger looks forward to the next chapter in the playbook.
