Player Feature: LaTonya Gadison & Ladarius Waits Love can come in many different forms. Whether it’s from family, a significant other or the love for a hobby, the feelings can fluctuate through the spectrum of emotions. For Rosedale’s LaTonya Gadison and Olive Branch’s Ladarius Waits, the love of the game is what continues to drive each one. Waits found his love of the game young at the age of six while Gadison waited until she was a little older to enjoy her fascination with the sports. While each had their own beginnings in the game, it’s that deep lovehate relationship that keep both coming back for more. Waits grew up idolizing former Philadelphia 76er Allen Iverson while Gadison has patterned her game after former New Orleans Hornet and current Los Angeles Clipper standout Chris Paul. However, growing up, love can also cause a lot of heartbreak and pain and Gadison and Waits both suffered through the heartache and pain that the game of basketball enjoys inflicting on its most loving players. “I played with older people because it would make me better,” Waits said. “They would knock me down…lots of bumps and bruises.” While Waits was feeling the physical pain of playing with older players in Olive Branch and the Memphis, Tennessee metro area, Gadison was feeling the heartache that many that have played the have felt. LaTonya Gadison sport“When I was in high school, we played New Site with a chance to go to the state tournament and we lost by two points,” Gadison said. “It crushed me. I really wanted a ring before I got out of high school.” Heartache can often lead to other things – and one of the main things that Gadison got out of her broken heart was motivation. “It made me want to strive more,” Gadison said. However, while heartache and pain may be the negative aspects of love; there are also many positive aspects and Gadison and Waits strive for the positive side of life and have found motivation from a variety of sources. “My brother was so hard on me all the time because he wanted to see me succeed,” Waits said. While Waits was drawing motivation from his brother and sister, the Olive Branch native realizes that there are more things to life and that the love of the game has already been passed down a generation. “My nephew tries to watch what I do,” Waits said. “I’m a role model to him.” As Waits tries to watch out for his nephew, Gadison draws her support from her fans. Gadison’s fans are what motivate the Bolivar County native. “I had a lot of fans,” Gaidson said. “They always motivated me to be the best. They toughened me up and kept me going and keep telling me to keep my head up.” Keeping one’s head up is hard when the competition is tougher than a player and just like Waits, Gadison learned tough love on the courts outside of a gymnasium.

“I ended up playing against mostly guys,” Gadison said. “There were like three girls. Not many in my town liked to play ball.” Gadison had to find something to pass the time and Beulah native knew that sitting at home was not going to accomplish her goals. For those that do not know, Beulah sits in the Mississippi delta just south of Rosedale on a bend in the Mississippi River. “I’ve played street ball a lot and my sister she was playing before me,” said Gadison. “I didn’t like being at home by myself so I thought I would try it and I liked it.” However, while other options tried to influence Gadison and Waits growing up, it was the love of the game that kept them coming back. Waits headed to William Penn University to play for the Statesmen out of high school but found the love of the game drawing him back to the Magnolia State. “I went to Olive Branch High School…was coached by Nick Coln,” Waits said. “It was one of the big reasons I came to Northeast. I felt comfortable here so I decided to bring my talents here.” While Waits was bringing his talents back to Mississippi, Gadison was expressing her talents in more than one way. At West Bolivar High School, Gadison was busy running track and being a member of the band when she was not busy on the court. Ladarius Waits After high school, Gadison had to break-up with her other loves in order to focus on the sport that she loved. However, the separation was not easy. Gadison had been in the band since the sixth grade and played the trombone after switching from an auxiliary member following her first year in band. “I had an offer for band,” Gadison said. “But basketball was where my heart was…band I did not love as much as basketball and you have to go where your heart is at.” Gadison and Waits also share an admiration for a higher being prior to each game. “I always pray before each game and talk to God,” Gadison said. Nonetheless, Gadison and Waits know that their love for the game will help each of them accomplish their goals in life. Both want to go to a division one school and Waits wants to focus on physical education and health and looks toward going into coaching so he can share his love for the game with others while Gadison also has a physical education emphasis but wants to be an athletic trainer.
