Player Feature: Tiffany Martin & Jermaine Hollimon Jermaine Hollimon and Tiffany Martin look quite different on the outside. Hollimon stands at 6’4” and is one of those “rare players” who can shoot the from downtown but also likes to play defense just as hard. Martin, a foot shorter at 5’4”, is quick off the dribble and likes to drive to the hoop. However, on the inside they share at least one characteristic..the love of basketball. For both Hollimon and Martin, their days are simple. “Go to class. Play basketball. Eat. Sleep.” And that’s what the freshman duo is doing to help provide the winning formula for the Tiger and Lady Tiger basketball teams. Hollimon comes from the basketball-rich Memphis Melrose area, while Martin suited up as a Lady Conquistador for Olive Branch High School during her prep season. Both helped to propel their respective teams to dominance during their final varsity year with Hollimon leading Melrose to a 37-4 and a state championship. Martin led the Lady Conquistadors to 20 wins her final year and followed her family to Northeast. Now, both are lending their basketball talents to Ricky Ford’s Lady Tigers and David Robbins’ Tigers, and have found a home in the friendly confines of Bonner Arnold Coliseum. During the early part of the season, Martin helped lead the Lady Tigers to a 5-5 overall mark and a 1-1 record in the North Division entering the holiday break, but it has been at home where Martin and the Tiffany Martin Lady Tigers have found success. Before Christmas, Martin and the Lady Tigers went 4-1 at the friendly confines of Bonner Arnold Coliseum, while Hollimon’s crew was just one win off that record when he and the Tigers posted a 3-2 mark at home during the 2010 portion of the schedule. Bonner Arnold Coliseum has become a second home for Hollimon and Martin as each has spent more than their fair share of time in the legendary building. From athletic competitions to practice, Hollimon and Martin can routinely be found perfecting their games in the spacious gymnasium. “I have to practice hard, take my time and make good decisions,” Martin

said. “To be a good shooter you have to constantly work on it,” Hollimon said. “You have to work on it every day…and make sure you follow-through each time.” For Hollimon, there has been an adjustment to the speed of the game. Martin, on the other hand has had to get used to the style of the college game. “It is a different pace,” Hollimon said. “You have to think three-to-four steps ahead and be prepared.” “The speed, the competition is all different,” Martin said. “The shot clock mostly.” However, as both gain experience in the competitive Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) North Division, their respective individual talents adjust themselves to the game at hand. Hollimon believes defense is the key to a good offense and has formed his game around what the opposing defense is doing to stop him. “It is really based on how the defense is playing,” Hollimon said. “Either pull up and take a quick shot or use experience and technique.” While Hollimon is still trying to read an opponent’s defense on the move, it is the freshman’s own defense that has led to points for the Tigers. “We have to play defense. Defense wins championships.” Hollimon said. “Defense turns into offense. Defense is a big honor to me.” Martin wants to show the league that Jermaine Hollimon she is more than just a 5-4 guard. The freshman from Olive Branch wants to be a leader on the floor and thinks that with experience, the leadership capabilities needed to guide the Lady Tigers will come. “I want to the lead the team in a good direction and show them I want to be a leader,” Martin said. “I want to be a better point guard and defensive player.” While leading the Lady Tigers is something Martin would like to accomplish, she has already accomplished something her family wanted her to do. “My mom and dad went to this school,” Martin said. “I have a lot of family down here so I figured I would give it a try.” But while mom and dad went to Northeast for Martin, Hollimon summed up the schedule for the duo, “Go to class. Play basketball. Eat. Sleep.”
