Player Feature: Talisa Boyd & Tyler Brunson Sometimes, it takes an e-mail from halfway around the world to convince a player to come to college. Sometimes, all it takes is knowing the right people. For Lady Tiger sophomore forward Talisa Boyd and Tiger sophomore forward Tyler Brunson, each one of those scenarios led to them coming to Northeast. Boyd received an e-mail from Lady Tiger head coach Brian Alexander while she was on a mission trip in Japan while Brunson’s former Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) coach is a friend of Tiger assistant coach Nick Coln. For Boyd, it’s been an adventure through out the American southwest as the Northeast sophomore traveled from California to Louisiana to Texas and finally to Mississippi. Brunson’s travels have been more of an East Coast affair as the Tiger sophomore found himself at Tucker High School in Georgia before moving to Mount Zion Christian Academy in Durham, N.C. and then back to Tucker for his senior year. Fate played a role in each of their recruitments and Boyd and Brunson each ended up in Texas for their first year of college. Boyd chose to go to Panola College while Brunson followed his brother to Tyler Junior College. However, for one reason or another, both ended up looking for a new school. For Boyd, the trip through the American southwest has been a decent one. From opening up her playing career in California through her sophomore year to winning a championship with Natchitoches Central High School in Natchitoches, Louisiana, Boyd has found a love for the game. Nonetheless, that love was almost lost after her first year in college. “I played for a year and took a year off,” Boyd said. “We weren’t very good. We kept losing, and losing and losing. We maybe won two or three games the whole season and I felt like I was not developing as a player and decided I didn’t want to go there.” Thank goodness for e-mails. “I sent out a couple of e-mails to some coaches in Mississippi,” Boyd said. “(Coach Alexander) was the first one to reply so that’s how I got here. He contacted me while he was in Japan,” Boyd said. “He was looking for a four-player that could pass, score and rebound like I could. He said when he opened up the e-mail it was everything he was looking for.” Boyd’s move wasn’t without hesitation. As the oldest of four siblings, it meant that she would have to give up her job at an orthopedic clinic in Natchitoches and move almost eight hours from home. That move from home also meant that her siblings – a 16-year-old brother, a 12-year-old brother and a 4-year-old sister would probably not get to see her play in college. “That trip is probably never going to happen – with a mom that works and three kids.” Boyd said. “It’s a 7-hour, 35-minute drive home.” Even though it’s almost an eight-hour drive home, Boyd knows that she made the right choice. Boyd’s mother made sure of that while she was growing up. “School always comes first,” said Boyd. “There are no sports without school. I was pretty much an ‘A’ student. I graduated high school with a 3.0. No matter
Talisa Boyd
how talented you are, you can’t do anything without an education. That was just the way I was raised.” While Boyd grew up playing basketball, Brunson found his hardwood calling in high school. After a growth spurt between his sophomore and freshman years, Brunson decided to put his height to his advantage by playing basketball. Up until his ninth grade year, Brunson was a football player and wanted to try something new. That theme of “trying something new” follows Brunson throughout his life today with various adventures in high school and college. “I played football and tried out for basketball and made it,” Brunson said. “I didn’t want to play football anymore because I started to grow so I just stuck with basketball.” However, football and basketball weren’t the only two sports the Georgia native tried out in high school. “I just wanted to try something new,” Brunson said. “I played soccer my senior year in high school and was pretty good at it. I actually only got scored on twice.” Nonetheless, Brunson knew his calling when he fell in love with the game of basketball his senior year but a lack of interest from area colleges sent the Georgia basketball player to Texas for his first season. “I didn’t have any schools come after me so I signed with Tyler Junior College,” Brunson said, “but then I wanted to try something new and came to Northeast.” One of Brunson’s things that the Northeast sophomore has locked in on and has not tried to change is his mind about what he wants to do in life. The 6-6 power forward wants to become a lawyer, thanks to a little friendly advice from his mother. “When I was younger, my mom always said I talked back and that I should become a lawyer,” Brunson said. “I thought about it and wanted to try it out. I like crime shows and all of that.” Brunson’s mother has been a driving force in his life and in the lives of his two older brothers. Whether it is granting them height (Brunson’s mother towers at 5-11) or allowing the siblings to do their own things, it’s been a family affair for Brunson. Brunson’s oldest brother is at the North Carolina Central University pursuing a law degree at the age of 23 while his other brother (20) was his teammate at Tyler Junior College in Texas. With Brunson wanting to be a lawyer, the Northeast sophomore found his case on the basketball court during the Tigers final game of 2012 and convinced a jury of his peers that the Tigers will be a team to contend in the Mississippi Association of Community/Junior Colleges (MACJC) during the latter part of the year. “We were down 18 with eight minutes to go,” Brunson said about the Gadsden State game on December 13. “We came together as a team and came back to win.” Whether it’s on the court or studying to be in one, Brunson knows that an education is the key to each. “You just have to stay focused,” Brunson said. “It’s all about time management.”
