Player Feature: Angelia Allen & KeDorian Sullivan Whether it’s family encouragement or professional inspiration, athletes are influenced by their environments. For Northeast’s sophomore forward KeDorian Sullivan and freshman forward Angelia Allen guidance has come from both places. Sullivan and Allen both credit their mothers for their basketball prowess and look to the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) Oklahoma City Thunder small forward Kevin Durant for inspiration. However, Allen and Sullivan’s admiration of Durant is not limited what the NBA star does on the court. It is what the basketball veteran does when he is not playing that impresses the duo. “I love his work ethic,” Sullivan said. “He is in the gym 24-hours a day, 7-days a week when he is not playing.” “There was a quote from his coach on how he comes to practice each day and plays like he is a walk-on,” Allen said. While Durant comes in at six feet, nine inches (6-9), Sullivan registers a respectable six feet, seven inches (6-7) and Allen measures five feet, nine inches (5-9) and both play the small forward position for the Tigers and Lady Tigers, respectively. Nonetheless, while Durant may influence Allen and Sullivan’s games on the court it was the foundations that each of their mothers help build as Sullivan and Allen were growing up that helped each reach their potential to play on the collegiate level. “My mother introduced me to the sport,” Allen said. “I grew up Angelia Allen playing (basketball) and just love it.” Sullivan’s mother is a little tougher on her six-feet, seven-inch son. “My mom…she is like my coach,” Sullivan said. “She tells me what I need to work on as far as going to the next level.” Sullivan has already had success on the Division I level – transferring from Alcorn State University during the offseason. Sullivan appeared in 32 games for the Alcorn State University Braves during the 2011-12 season clocking 20.1 minutes a game and scoring 175 points. During his time with Alcorn State, Sullivan also pulled down 136 total rebounds and had 20 blocks on the season. Under Luther Riley, Sullivan shot .486 from the floor and knocked
down over 60-percent of his free throw attempts. Sullivan tallied over double digits seven times in his 32 games with the Braves including a double-double against the University of New Orleans where the Southwind (Tenn.) product had 10 points to go along with 11 rebounds. As Sullivan was providing an offensive punch for Alcorn State, Allen was busy making her mark on the Belmont High School record books. During her four-year varsity career, Allen scored 1,687 points in just 136 games – averaging 12.4 points per game. In her last three years as a Lady Cardinal, Allen helped lead Belmont to a pair of Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class 3A State Championships. Allen and the Lady Cardinals captured the Class 3A State Championship her sophomore season and then turned the trick two years later during her senior campaign. However, Allen and Sullivan both know that there is a topic that comes before athletics – academics and with their selected careers the Belmont native and the Memphis, Tenn., native have to dedicate all their time away from Bonner Arnold Coliseum to books. Allen has expressed interest in becoming an x-Ray technician while Sullivan, who is currently undecided on what he wants to do has said a career in sports medicine could be his calling. “It’s academics first and basketball second,” Sullivan said. “That’s how I was raised.” Both Allen and Sullivan have KeDorian Sullivan said they would like to continue their playing careers on the fouryear level but know that their selected professions are tops for each. Allen said she’d like to finish her basketball career on the four-year level then step into a job while Sullivan has aspirations of making it back to the Division I level and wants to play as long as he can. Whether that means making it to the professional leagues – NBA, DNBA or even overseas, the Memphis native will be happy with the result. However, both know that with a firm foundation in education and having their selected careers to fall back on when the playing days are over, the duo will be as successful off the court as they have been on it. Public Information intern Jessie Perriman contributed to this report.
