Player Feature: Kebrina Lucas & Marcell Lucas What a difference a year makes. However, 365 days is not that long when one considers that Kebrina and Marcell Lucas have been battling it out for family bragging rights their entire lives. Kebrina played her high school basketball career at New Albany High School while Marcell completed his varsity career at Baldwyn High School but it was the days of pick up games in the grandparent’s yard that the duo remembers the best. “We would always go to the back yard and play basketball and we played against each other one day and I beat him,” Kebrina recalled. “I was so excited because I did stuff he could not do.” Marcell does not deny the loss to his sister even says that it was not uncommon for Kebrina to beat him in one-on-one. Nonetheless, what started as a sibling rivalry has blossomed in a partnership that has helped each other get better in retrospect, however, that has not always been the case. In high school with Marcell donning the Bearcat logo for Baldwyn and Kebrina suiting up as a Lady Bulldog for New Albany, the two did not get to see each other play that much. “It’s a lot of fun playing with him because we grew up playing together in our grandparent’s back yard,” Kebrina said. the games he’s always hyping Kebrina Lucas “Before me up. It really means a lot to hear my brother cheering for me up in the stands which motivates me to play even better.” “I really never got to see my sister play basketball in high school,” Marcell said. “Now that we go to the same college, I really enjoy watching her play.” During their freshman years at Northeast, the brother-sister bond grew tighter and each relied on the other to help get through the tough times at college. Both also knew where each of their strengths was on the basketball court and used the sibling connection to help better their own game. “When we get done practicing we work with each other and try to make ourselves better,” Kebrina said. “We just fed off of each other.” Marcell even took advice a step further and relied on his sister to help him with his fundamentals. “She’s always helping me improve on my shooting and dribbling,” Marcell said. However, the brother-sister rivalry does not stop on the hardwood. Marcell and Kebrina do not have to worry about helping each other
study…however Kebrina jokingly claims that she is the ‘smarter one’ of the two. Nevertheless, Kebrina did not always have the attitude that she does not when it came to her brother. “Back in middle school, I was very scared and nervous to play at first,” Kebrina said, “but after I started working at my game and playing AAU, it just got better from there.” That confidence has helped Kebrina become a floor general for the Lady Tigers. After missing most of the first half of the 2012-13 season with a hand injury, Kebrina has returned in the second half and helped lead Northeast to a tie for first place in the North Division with a 5-1 league mark. What started as just a brother-sister, sibling rivalry game in the grandparent’s back yard soon led the duo to make sure that the family bonds that had kept them close growing up – kept them close in college as well, with the Lucas siblings both choosing Northeast after their high school days. But it was that time with the family that Kebrina and Marcell credit as being the reason they both fell in love with the game. “My mother and grandmother come to all the games and are such an inspiration to me,” Kebrina said. Marcell is encouraged with the knowlMarcell Lucas edge of his family’s past accomplishment and success. “Hearing about my relatives playing ball and achieving a lot has inspired me to achieve something in my lifetime, too,” Marcell said. Basketball has not been the only love in the siblings’ lives growing up – each tried different sports but each came back to the game they loved. “I am very pleased and proud of Kebrina’s progress both athletically and academically,” said second-year Lady Tiger head coach Brian Alexander. Still, what a difference a year makes. Both Kebrina and Marcell have grown up and matured and plan on moving up to the next level of basketball and continuing their education. Kebrina is on pace to graduate in May as the Lady Tigers try for a 100-percent graduation rate. But one thing remains constant throughout their hardwood adventures. As the sibling bond has increased, the duo has become aware the role that family plays in an athlete’s life. Whether it’s motivation, a little extra work or having someone there when things just do not go one’s way, family will always be there.
