Player Feature: Katie Garvin & Acie Vance An old adage says, “Hindsight is 20-20.” That statement could not be more correct for Tiger sophomore guard Acie Vance and Lady Tiger sophomore Katie Garvin. Vance decided to take a chance on coming to Northeast straight out of high school when the Ripley native had offers from four-year universities and colleges. Garvin decided to take a full year off away from basketball between her high school and college playing days. However, both agree the decisions have been one of the best that each could have made. “My first year here, I didn’t play,” Garvin said. “I signed and then I decided that it was not what I wanted to do – looking back at it I think it was the best decision for me.” “I came to Northeast because of my grades,” Vance said. “I could have gone to another school but I chose Northeast and this is where I want to be and where I need to be.” Both Garvin and Vance faced mature decisions when contemplating their basketball fates however, a family full of athletes made the Katie Garvin choice clear for Vance. “My dad played football at Northeast and my mother played basketball so I definitely get my competitive nature honest,” said Vance. Vance, like his father, played football at Ripley HighSchool and was a standout quarterback for the Tigers and was highly recruited to play football. “I liked playing football and had plenty of offers butI really love basketball more and decided to just stick to basketball instead of playing two sports in college,” Vance explained. Garvin decided to follow in her father’s footsteps of playing at Northeast after getting adjusted to college life. “My dad was a basketball player,” Garvin said of her father Russ. “He played at Northeast for a semester so I guess I was born with a ball in my hands…it was something that we all did well.” Whether it was the competitive nature of having parents that played sports or just enjoying the camaraderie that sports brings, both Garvin

and Vance know they would not be where each other is at today without basketball. Nonetheless, Vance and Garvin both enjoy a few minute aspects that Northeast offers over other schools. Garvin and Vance both hail from in-district schools -- Vance from Ripley High School in Tippah County and Garvin from Kossuth High School in Alcorn County. Garvin and Vance are close enough that each could go home in as little as 15-30 minutes and have the benefit of playing with other Tiger and Lady Tiger athletes that they have played with all their lives. “I get to go home to mom’s cooking pretty often so that is nice,” Garvin said. “I played with Kiki (Gwyn) for four years in high school – she was my point guard for all four years.” While Garvin took a year off, Vance jumped into the fray of the Mississippi Association of Community/Junior Colleges (MACJC) and did not miss a beat from his standout days for Ripley. In his final season for the Tippah County-based Tigers, Vance filled the stat-line up. Vance averaged over 30 points per game, fiveasAcie Vance sists, six rebounds and three steals per outing for Ripley and tallied 453 points before signing with David Robbins’ Tigers following his senior campaign. Vance did not let the transition from high school to college stop him and showed that Northeast was where he belonged during his first year in Booneville. As a starting guard for Northeast, Vance helped lead the Tigers to a 7-0 start his freshman season and a national ranking in the January 18, 2012 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Top 20 poll where the Tigers were ranked thirteenth in the nation. However, both Garvin and Vance know that being a teen-ager and having to make a life-changing, mature decision is a gut-wrencher but each chose their own path and are now being rewarded for making the right decision. “I think it was a good decision – I don’t know if it helped or hurt – but I think it was the best decision for me,” Garvin said.
