Dennis the Menace: Lafayette County native causes havoc on offenses Holmes (Goodman) Date: October 23

Northeast-Holmes History Series: Holmes 27-21-1 2013 -- Northeast, 17-14 2012 -- Holmes, 34-14 2011 -- Northeast, 21-0 2010 -- Northeast, 35-20 2009 -- Northeast, 25-10

Jamel Dennis Northeast Mississippi Community College’s season finale tonight signals the conclusion of a very memorable two-year career for linebacker Jamel Dennis. However, the Lafayette County High School graduate was not sure how much success he would find when first stepping onto the practice field for his inaugural season at the collegiate level last fall. “To tell you the truth, I really didn’t think I was going to play like this at all,” said Dennis. “I just thank the Lord that he gave me the gift of football and that I could play.” Any worries that Dennis may have held in the back of his mind were laid to rest in his first outing as a Tiger at Copiah-Lincoln Community College in August 2013 where he recorded 10 tackles, two sacks for a loss of 11 yards and one pass break up to help Northeast come close to defeating the nationally-ranked Wolves. He built on that performance to become one of the best defensive athletes at any position in the entire country as a freshman. Dennis notched double-digit tackling performances in six of his nine outings and set a career-high with ten solo stops against Mississippi Delta Community College. Dennis ranked among the top 12 individually in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) during the 2013 campaign with 96 total tackles (12th), 64 solo stops (9th) and 10.7 tackles per game (10th). Those numbers were also within the top four spots in the Magnolia State. The 5-11, 210-pounder added nine tackles for loss, three sacks and an interception versus rival Itawamba Community College to earn second-team All-State status from the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC). 6

Last 10 meetings

“You’ve got to have the mindset that you want it,” Dennis said. “You don’t want anybody to embarrass you on the field so you have to go out there and make the tackles.” Dennis should garner MACJC All-State status for a second consecutive year as he has increased his production in a variety of areas during his sophomore campaign with the Tigers. The Oxford native leads a Northeast squad, which is third in the conference with 21 turnovers and only trails reigning national champion East Mississippi Community College and Itawamba, with five takeaways so far this season. Four of the turnovers accounted for by Dennis have been fumbles. That ties Dennis for the most recoveries by a single player in the NJCAA with Trinity Valley (Texas) Community College’s Cortney Finney and Mar’Quaveon Jones plus Gabe Loyd of Fort Scott (Kan.) Community College. Northeast defensive coordinator Kenny Jackson has watched Dennis progress in multiple areas this year and feels that specialized training in practice have helped him advance his abilities. “We work on turnovers with drills every day and Dennis does a good job for us,” he said. “He’s grown to be a leader. He’s a guy that takes it serious and supports his teammates.” Dennis made perhaps his most impressive play as a Tiger last week against Pearl River Community College. The Wildcats were four yards away from taking a two-score advantage over Northeast midway through the second quarter. However, a bad exchange between Pearl River’s center and quarterback led to a fumble. Dennis grabbed the loose pigskin and raced 96 yards for the initial defensive touchdown of his phenomenal career. It was the longest fumble return through the first nine weeks of the 2014 NJCAA football sea-

2008 -- Holmes, 30-7 2007 -- Holmes, 13-0 2006 -- Northeast, 12-2 2005 -- Northeast, 20-13 2004 -- Northeast, 31-3

son. Dennis and the Tigers are currently tied for second in the country with defending national runner-up Georgia Military College with 14 fumble recoveries. “I’ll remember that forever,” Dennis said. “I went home and watched that play over and over and over.” Dennis also registered a personal best 17 tackles versus the Wildcats to increase his total for the campaign to 65. He is just outside the top five in the conference and trails Southwest Mississippi Community College’s Omarius Bryant by seven takedowns entering the final week of the regular season. He is tops in the MACJC and seventh in the country with 15 tackles for loss. Dennis also has five sacks for 38 yards and a pair of pass break ups this year. Dennis, who is receiving multiple NCAA Division I looks with heavy interest from Alabama A&M University and Georgia Southern University, made another memorable effort at Mississippi Delta earlier in October when he blocked a field goal attempt as the halftime horn sounded to keep Northeast and the Trojans in a stalemate. He is one of 20 sophomores that will don the black and gold one last time in Booneville this evening when the Tigers face Holmes Community College. It is the final chapter for a group of men that helped Northeast claim its seventh MACJC North Division runner-up finish in program history one year ago. It is a special unit that Dennis has grown to respect and admire. He offered one last bit of advice to his fellow upperclassmen as they battle the Bulldogs under the bright lights and beautiful surroundings of Tiger Stadium. “Guys, let’s go out there, play hard and get this win.”
