Military means family to German-born Lemetrius Hollins Northwest (Senatobia) Date: September 11

Northeast-Northwest History Series: Northwest 34-18-2 2013 – Northeast, 34-21 2012 – Northwest, 19-13 2011 – Northeast, 34-28 2010 – Northwest, 26-6 2009 – Northwest, 17-14

Lemetrius Hollins Tonight is an important evening for Northeast Mississippi Community College student-athlete Lemetrius Hollins for two reasons. The first is fairly obvious to any fan of the Tiger football program. Northeast opens the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) North Division portion of their schedule against archrival Northwest Mississippi Community College. The second involves the Tigers’ annual Military Appreciation Night. The event, which is dedicated to recognizing the acts of America’s brave soldiers, is more personal to Hollins because multiple members of his family have served in various roles with the United States Armed Forces since the 1970s. “I think it’s really special because I feel like sometimes the military and armed forces don’t get the proper dues that they deserve for going and fighting for their country,” said Hollins. “It’s important that we praise them because they deserve it.” Hollins was actually born in Gelnhausen, Germany, which is a town located about 25 miles from the country’s fifth-largest city in Frankfurt and nestled between the Vogelsberg Mountains and the Spessart Range at the river Kinzig, while his father, Leonard, was assigned there by the Army. The current Northeast sophomore returned stateside around 1999 when he was four years old, but the impact of his time overseas remains to this day. Hollins can claim citizenship in both America and Germany and holds birth cer6

tificates from both nations. He can also speak a smidgen of the German language. “Wie geht’s lhnen?” he asked, “or ‘How are you?’” Leonard Hollins was also stationed at Fort Hood (Ky.) and Fort Benning (Ga.) before settling down in Madison with his young son Lemetrius after eight years in Germany. The ties to the military do not end with Hollins’ father. He had five other relatives that dedicated a portion of their lives to protect the United States, including Perry Shumpert, Marlin Parker, Katherine Shumpert, Tiffany Parker and Johnny Parker. “It means a lot just knowing that I have a family that cares enough to go off and potentially die for their country,” Hollins said. “I think that’s real respectable. To be able to honor them is a big deal. I think it’s a great thing for Northeast.” Hollins continued his far-reaching travels when he signed a scholarship to join the Tigers during National Signing Day festivities on Wednesday, February 6, 2012. The Madison Central High School graduate, who starred under the tutelage of former Northeast headman Bobby Hall, felt at home in the City of Hospitality. “Out of all the places I went and looked, Booneville was a community where everything was where you need it,” said Hollins. “I like the campus and the coaches are great. It just seemed like the right place and everything fit in.” Hollins was the backup for Daniel Ross, who now plays for the Canadian Football League’s (CFL) Edmonton Eskimos, during his freshman season in 2013. He finished

2008 – Northwest, 50-28 2007 – Northwest, 26-24 2006 – Northwest, 31-14 2005 – Northeast, 38-14 2004 – Northeast, 19-16

with six tackles and 2.5 sacks, which was third best among the Tigers. He has almost matched his total from last year in tackles with three in only two games so far. Hollins has also garnered the start in both of Northeast’s contests versus then-No. 9 Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and Hinds Community College at defensive tackle. “I’ve watched Lemetrius grow into a great leader that we’re proud to have,” Northeast head coach Ricky Smither said. “He’s a great student and I’m just really proud of him. He’s done a great job for us both on and off the field.” Hollins hopes his journey will continue after wrapping up a phenomenal two-year career with the Tigers. He received looks this past spring from Texas Southern University of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and a handful of schools from the states of Kansas and Louisiana. The current focus for Hollins is not on his future plans, however, but on the 6:30 p.m. kickoff against the Northwest Rangers. A victory puts Northeast in great shape to contend for its fifth MACJC North Division crown. “The key to winning is working as one unit,” said Hollins. “When you take yourself out of the picture and think of the team in general that’s the most important thing.” Hollins echoed the thoughts of the entire Northeast football squad when concluding his thoughts about our courageous troops both home and abroad. “To all our armed forces and people that are going out to protect this country we appreciate you and look up to you. Thank you.”
