Cousins rely on each other to survive, prosper on football field

Jacoby Smith Athleticism runs deep in the gene pool of Oktibbeha County’s Smith family. The Northeast Mississippi Community College football program has been the beneficiary of the strength and endurance from two products of that lineage throughout the 2014 campaign. Jacoby Smith and Johnny Smith share a bond that is tighter than any other connection on the Tigers’ current roster. The duo grew up together and became close as cousins. That friendship grew tighter and transitioned easily to the gridiron at Starkville High School. Jacoby and Johnny quickly found success and led the Yellowjackets to back-to-back trips to the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class 5A championship game. Starkville fell to Picayune High School at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium during the 2011 season. However, the Smith’s were not denied during their senior year by guiding the Yellowjackets to a victory over Pascagoula during their second visit to the Magnolia State’s capital city. The Smith’s success did not go unnoticed by collegiate coaches. Both young men signed scholarships once their prep careers were completed. Jacoby Smith originally signed with NCAA Division I member Alcorn State University of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) while Johnny Smith inked with the four-time Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) North Division champions at Northeast. However, it did not take long for Johnny Smith to talk his kinsman into reuniting with him as a Tiger on the Booneville campus. “I kinda baited him to come join me up here at Northeast,” said Johnny Smith. “I told him it was going to be like the same thing in high school and that we could better the team.” The combo has indeed been key for the Tigers throughout the campaign. Johnny Smith has started in six of Northeast’s seven games as a sophomore at safety while Jacoby Smith returned following a redshirt season to become the top backup at cornerback. The Smith’s are part of a defensive unit for the Tigers that has forced 20 turnovers. That number is third in the conference behind division rivals East Mississippi Community College and Itawamba 6

Community College, which have 21 takeaways apiece. Northeast is also tied for first in the country with defending National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) runner-up Georgia Military College and Kilgore (Texas) College with 13 fumble recoveries. Jacoby and Johnny have recovered two loose balls apiece to guide that effort by the Tigers. Both standouts also have one interception apiece, which brings their total turnovers accounted for to three. That is tied for second on the squad behind linebacker Jamel Dennis. Jacoby Smith credits the increase in productivity to first-year defensive coordinator Kenny Jackson, who puts an emphasis on capitalizing on the miscues and mistakes of Northeast’s opponents. “Coach Jackson everyday in practice makes us come out and get three turnovers,” he said. “It’s very big because practice makes perfect. It’s nothing for us to go out in the game and get turnovers because of our drills.” Jacoby Smith, who stands at 5-10 and 215 pounds, excels at defending passes. He has two pass break ups, which is the most by any cornerback for the Tigers. “I’m not a great tackler, but I can cover pretty good,” Jacoby Smith said. “I’ve been pretty solid as a whole on defense this season.” Johnny Smith, who is slightly taller than his relative at 5-11, is the better tackler between the two with 37 total stops. He has 22 assisted tackles and 15

solo takedowns with 1.5 tackles for loss. “I look at it like it’s a gift,” said Johnny Smith. “What makes me good I think is I’m an open field tackler. I’m a sure tackler.” Northeast head coach Ricky Smither has not been surprised at all by the performance of the Smith’s since recruiting them from Starkville. “We knew that if we could give them an opportunity that they’d make some outstanding plays for us,” he said. “We can count on them in a pinch and they’ve done a great job for us.” Johnny Smith will depart from the City of Hospitality once this campaign is complete while Jacoby Smith still has one season of eligibility remaining. Johnny is receiving looks from multiple NCAA Division I institutions, including Kennesaw State (Ga.) University and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. No matter where Johnny Smith lands next year, the longtime colleagues know that things will not be as special as their four seasons together at Starkville and one incredible campaign as Tigers. “When we come together, we’re a force,” Johnny Smith said. “We both worked together and made plays. It’s been very big for me.” “It’s going to be sad when he goes off to play at the next level,” said Jacoby Smith. “He’s the reason that I came here in the first place. We’ve always had good chemistry in high school and we brought it over to college.”
