History of Seaham Red Star

S

eaham Red Star are named after the pub in which they were formed. A Sunday morning side in 1973, they are now widely regarded as one of the Northern League’s leading clubs. Much of the credit for the Club’s early development belongs to Ralph Pigg, the initial Secretary, and Larry Phillips, the Club’s first Manager. The pair, supported by a small committee, entered a side in the Houghton and District League and, after a promising first season, made a successful application to join the Northern Alliance League in 1974. After a further five fairly successful seasons, the Club felt sufficiently confident to join the then highly competitive Wearside League in 1979. This confidence was soon justified, the Club winning the Durham Challenge Cup in 1980 and the League and League Cup “double” in 1981-82. In 1983, they were elected to the Northern League Second Division and , after some near misses, eventually gained promotion to the First Division in the 1987-88 season. Bryan Mayhew took over as Chairman of the Club in 1986 and, with able support from former Secretaries, Harry Hobson and John McBeth and a small hardworking committee – in particular Reg Atkinson, Dave Copeland, Jim Ferguson and

John Smith – the Club enjoyed First Division status for an unbroken fourteen seasons. Notable successes during this period, included finishing third in 1993-4, winning the League Cup in 19923 and, after leading the table for most of the season, finishing second in 1999/2000. Mayhew was also a prime mover in getting the League to join the National Pyramid, calling the Special General Meeting of clubs which eventually led to the historic decision being made. Just two years after finishing runners-up in the First Division, the Club suffered its first ever relegation in its near thirty years history. Even worse was to follow when, as a result of dwindling committee support, officials took the reluctant step of tendering the Club’s resignation from the League. However, following a positive response from a number of local people keen to see the Club continue, a new committee was formed under the chairmanship of John Smith and the resignation was withdrawn. The Club’s re-introduction to Division 2 at the start of 2002/3 got off to an unpromising start but, after bringing in Neil Hixon as Manager, the Star failed by the narrowest of margins to gain an immediate return to Division 1. Unfortunately for the Club, Neil’s achievements resulted in him being snapped up by Durham City shortly after the start of last season, effectively putting our promotion aspirations on hold for at least another year. However, with experienced Northern League manager Peter Mulcaster steadying the ship, the Club finished in a respectable mid-table position. Neil Hixon returned as manager in 2005 and along with Stuart Gooden and former Sunderland & Scotish International George Herd put together a

3 side that won promotion back to the First Division in the 2006/07 season. The following season Hixon & Herd moved to Sunderland RCA and Gooden took over the team which finished in a creditable 8th place in the table. The following season saw yet another change in management with former Darlington player Andy Toman taking over. Another dip in club fortunes saw the side face relegation. The 2010/11 and 2011/12 were two of the worst seasons in the Red Star history with the team involved in relegation battles which could have seen the club relegated to the Wearside League, both battles were successful and the club retained it’s Northern League status. In 2012 the club appointed Mark Collingwood and Simon Johnson, who achieved great success in the Northern Alliance League with Hebburn Reyrolle. They brought the nucleolus of the side from their previous club and have added experience and quality into what may well be a team that could challenge for honours. The last two seasons have seen a big improvement on the playing side with a 10 place finish in 2012/13 and 4th place last season missing out on promotion by 1 point. Previous managers in the Club’s history include Northern League legend Paul Walker, in conjunction with the long serving Chris Copeland; former Hartlepool Manager, Billy Horner; and ex Burnley player, Harry Wilson. Former players going on to join Football League clubs include Nigel Gleghorn (Ipswich and Manchester City), Bobby Davison (Halifax, Derby and Leeds) and Stephen Harper (currently with Newcastle United). Tommy Henderson remains the Club’s leading goalscorer, netting 211 goals in 276 appearances including a record breaking 62 in 1978-9.

F

irstly I would like to wish all the players, club officials and supporters from Whitley Bay FC a very warm welcome to Seaham Town Park this evening. Tonight we host first division Whitley Bay in the League Cup, our visitors tonight currently occupy 13th place in the league table having played 16 games, a lot less games played than most teams in and around them. The Bay are a club with a fantastic history, most recently they have been renowned for their great FA Vase victories, our very own Lee Kerr played a huge part in those great days for our visitors, “Sparky will captain The Star tonight against a club that is still very close to his heart, former Bay players Darren Reay and Darryll Donnelly could also feature if they pass late fitness tests prior to kick off. As for ourselves we have struggled with the tough fixture list that we have had, it is starting to take its toll on the small but committed squad that we have got at our disposal here at The Star, the treatment room has been bursting at the seams recently and further injuries picked up at the weekend have made our task even harder, key players have been playing with injuries and as it stands we are just taking each game as they come, a few changes to the side will be made tonight so that we can give one or two players the chance to hopefully recover from knocks they have picked up recently, however the eleven that will take to the field this evening will be expected to progress to the next round of this competition.

Since we last played here at Seaham Town Park there has been a bit transfer activity, left full back David Gordon has left the club and decided to join West Auckland Town for an undisclosed fee, the club would like to wish him all the best for the future, defender Chris Storey has joined The Star from Newton Aycliffe and has impressed in his two appearances to date. On Saturday gone we travelled to Brandon United and came away with a comfortable 5 nil victory, the game in my opinion was won within the first couple of minutes when we raced in to a early two goal lead, tonight also gives us a break away from league action, over the last few games I think it would be fair to say that we have won matches that most people would have expected us to win, tonight will be slightly different as we must come in to this game as underdogs playing against a side a league above ourselves, despite this I know that if we play to our full capacity will could cause a upset here this evening. Anyway I hope you enjoy this evenings game,

Colly

IN FOCUS Lee Kerr

A

fter starring for Whitley Bay in three FA Vase Finals and scoring in all three, Lee sought a new challenge and jumped at the opportunity to join Spennymoor Town at the start of last season, By his own admission Lee never settled at his new club and was instantly snapped up by title rivals Shildon. Because Lee was never a regular in the Spennymoor side his match fitness struggled, Seaham’s Mark Collingwood took the opportunity to take Lee on a 56 day loan spell with two plans a) to add some much needed experience into the Red Star midfield and b) to get Lee back to his best form. There’s been no doubt that both plans have worked and the Star remained unbeaten with Lee in the team while Shildon will be getting a fitter and sharper Lee back in their bid to lift the First Division title.

Shildon’s manager Gerry Forest on Lee Kerr’s signature. “The thought of Lee Kerr actually signing for Shildon is amazing,” added Forrest. “Lee has probably been the league’s most talented player over the last 10 years and he is still only 26. “It was only a few years ago that the level of his performances attracted serious attention from Newcastle.” he added. On completion of the loan spell last year, Lee, decided that a permanent move to Seaham Red Star would be more suitable than returning to Shildon and Seaham’s Collingwood acted quickly in securing the deal. Since making his Red Star debut lee has featured in 34 of the last 36 games and only been on the losing side once in our league programme

Football History in Seaham

I

t has been my hope that my research and the series of articles on the history of football in Seaham will stimulate much discussion, provoke memories and act as a foundation for a new book to be published by Seaham Red Star in 2015. Future articles will focus primarily on the period from the Second World War to the present time . There, hithBrian Hastings

erto, has been a little vagueness over the very early days of football in the town but a wonderful article which appeared in the Sunderland Echo on the 10th September 1904 gives us an in depth look at the facts . The article focuses on the history of Seaham White Star F.C. who, by 1904, had become the premier club in the town having succeeded Seaham

10 Harbour A.F.C.who had disbanded in the 1899- 1900 season . Seaham Harbour A.F.C. itself was formed in 1888-89 and won the Wearside League in the league`s inaugural season. White Star’s rise to prominence is quite remarkable. In 1899-1900 they were” a group of eleven youths just out of school” playing on the Gas Works Field south of the town. Instrumental in the club`s rise was one Mr. James Temple Wightman who had arrived in Seaham in about 1876. It was his arrival which caused the town to look up athletically. He formed the town`s Swimming Club in 1886 , played for the local rugby club and was a member of the Royal Humane Society receiving certificates for saving lives . It was football though which was his first love and the Echo states that had it not been for Wightman senior football in Seaham may not have prevailed. He was held in the highest esteem for his contribution to local football and local sport in general. The article also pays tribute to one William J. Ferguson, (one of the original young players at White Star), who, as well as being a promising footballer, also was a gifted organiser and administrator. Ferguson by 1904 at a young age had become the trusted and much respected secretary of Seaham White Star. A brief summary of the success of Seaham White Star from its humble beginnings gives testimony to the work of Wightman and Ferguson. In their first season they won the Hetton Cup and missed out on the Monkwearmouth and District League Championship by one point. They moved their headquarters to the Seaham Harbour A.F.C ground. 1900-01 saw them move to the Sun-

derland and District League and the following year they won the Hetton and District League. In 1902-03 they were elected to the Wearside League then a very much coveted position in local football. 1903-04 remarkably saw them win the Durham Amateur Cup a competition then entered by 130 prominent teams. As detailed in a previous article Seaham White Star ended that season playing nine games in ten days ,winning eight and drawing one and that being against a Whitburn side then considered one of the best in the county . White Star were in fact runners up of the Wearside League in 1903-04 and winners in 1905 and again in 1908 .The Echo tells us the county was” ringing with the deeds and exploits of the Seaham players”. Such was the strength of the White Star team that when the Wearside League X1 defeated Sunderland A.F.C 3-2 at Roker Park on the 30th June 1903 three Seaham White Star players Hood , Stark and Jeffreys were selected , the latter scoring the winning goal . I am so grateful to Jim Ferguson of the present Seaham Red Star committee for the kind loan of a photograph of the Seaham White Star winners of the Wearside League in 1904-05 and again in 1907-08. Jim has also provided a photograph of the Seaham Villa A.F.C of 189899 season which will both feature in Saturday’s programme. With the country currently paying tribute to those that have given their lives for our nation it will be interesting to research how many of the footballers on the photographs the First World War survived.

Seaham Red Star FC – Northern League Cup history

O

ur first entry into the League Cup in 1983/84 saw one of our better runs, new to the second division, Larry Phillip’s side defeated Bedlington Terriers, Evenwood and Crook Town before losing in the Semi Final to Blyth Spartans. Nigel Gleghorn played a major part scoring in 3 of the 4 rounds before turning professional with Ipswich Town the following season. The next six seasons saw the Star go at the first hurdle, in 90/91 we reached the quarter finals losing to Southbank after beating Tow Law and Blyth Spartans. 91/92 was another first round defeat but things certainly picked up the following season when we won the competition for the only time in our history.

1-1 draw after extra time Kevin Wolfe become the team’s hero saving twice in the penalty shootout which we won 3-2. The final was played at Billingham Town against Brandon United, still all square at 2-2 after extra time we had to face another shootout and Wolfie did it again with another two penalty saves.

Wins against Durham City, Blyth Spartans and Consett set up a Semi Final tie at home to Guisborough Town, following a

Playing Record 1983-2013 P W D L 54 22 4 28

F A GD 94 107 -13

The next five seasons saw us fall at the quarter final stages three times. Since the turn of the century our record has been pretty poor, 2002/03 saw another quarter final appearance and another defeat, this time by Brandon. We’ve only managed to get past our first game three times in the last 10 seasons. Surely another good cup run is due.

hree great results since our unfortunate exit from the Durham Challenge Cup. Firstly a great win at Selby in the FA Vase, a win that had some injury consequences as our hosts,

two players in particular, certainly left there ‘marks’ on Darryll Donnelly, David Palmer, Chris Scott and Darren Reay. Colly worked hard to bring players in for the next game against Tow Law,

and all 3 newcomers played their part in a hard fought victory and at the weekend the lads had the game won in twenty minutes with 3 goals against the division’s basement team. Tonight, will be a much sterner test as we take on First Division Whitley Bay, before returning to league action with a home tie on Saturday against Esh Winning. Unfortunately, Gary Shaw is ineligible to play tonight having featured for Dunston in the previous round of the League Cup, no doubt he will be a big miss following his recent performances for the Star.

MATCH REPORT

Brandon Utd 0 Red Star 5 8th November 2014 - Ebac Northern League Div 2

A

nother fine victory and three valuable points gained today, against struggling Brandon United , takes Seaham Red Star to within two points of league leaders Team Northumbria with Star having four games in hand. Seaham, remarkably, have now won their last eleven league fixtures scoring a total of forty five goals and have conceded only ten. This victory was by no means a “walk over with Brandon, new manager Paul Tunstall at the helm, whilst not dominating proceedings but giving a creditable account of themselves for long periods in the game. There will be many challenges to face and difficult games in the promotion race for Seaham , it is indeed very early days, but such is the impetus in results that Star must be considered as very realistic favourites for promotion. Spectators had barely time to focus on events on the football field before Star took the lead. Lewis Wing, finding space in a crowded six yard box, slotted home from a corner on two minutes. By ten minutes Star were leading 2-0. A left footed drive by striker Liam McBryde giving keeper Orton no chance from the edge of the area. The start did not cause Brandon`s heads to drop and ,within minutes, the home team`s Jonathan Yip came close with a header dipping over the bar. This attempt was followed by a long range effort from Seaham`s Lee Kerr going narrowly over the Brandon bar. Brandon`s Daniel Turnbull forced a good save from Newbrook on twenty five minutes. Seaham went further in front on the half hour when Dean Nicholson and Sonny Andrews combined well to set up Gary Shaw who finished with a great touch. It seemed that a first half Seaham rout would follow but this was not to be the immediate case with Brandon

coming close with several opportunities before the half time whistle. The addition of Seth Ejukwu added intensity to their game. Robinson hit the post and Ellis and Turnbull both shot wide from distance. Sonny Andrews made it 4-0 to Star just on the interval taking advantage of a good header by Liam McBryde to fire home a powerful shot . Seaham began the second half with Darren Reay replacing Chris Storey at right back . Brandon , defending deep , reorganised for damage limitation by manager Tunstall ,defended resolutely . Their new formation, coupled with many wasted final balls from Seaham, prevented Star from adding to their tally until the closing stages of the game . Brandon ,playing with greater composure, began to press Seaham with substitute and young prospect Anthony Chapman working tenaciously and Daniel Turnbull continuing to be a thorn in Seaham`s side . Seaham keeper Newbrook was not though severely tested . Seaham brought on substitutes Josh Home Jackson and Carl Thorp . Home- Jackson added renewed vigour to the Seaham attack. He was rewarded with a goal with two minutes remaining when he finished well a good spell of football from Seaham, in which Sonny Andrews had been instrumental, to make it 5-0 to Seaham . It was good news for Seaham after the game as other results filtered through. Pace setters Team Northumbria lost at home to Thornaby , fringe team Ryhope C.W. were defeated by Ryton and Crawcrook, similarly Heaton Stannington could only draw with Willington. Norton and Stockton were seemingly denied pole position , their game at Tow Law being abandoned through fog when they were leading 3-0 .

HOPPING MAD Yorkshire Ho

I

love the chance to watch two or three games in one day (even four on a few occasions) so when I saw that Bradford City v Sheffield United had been switched to a 5.15 kick off for television I trawled the internet looking for a game close to Valley Parade earlier in the afternoon. Eccleshill United seemed to be the best option. Just 2 and a half miles away it would only take about 10 minutes to get from one ground to the other. However taking into account match day traffic, not knowing the area and where to park and having to still pick up our tickets; Katie and I still felt a little uneasy about getting to Bradford in time. Mulling on the idea for a while I remembered a groundhopper friend of ours (John McClure) going to a small West Riding League club called Steeton A.F.C. not too long ago. After some more internet searching I found out that Steeton had a game that same day against Bingley Town in the Keighley & District Cup. Despite the game being a bit lower down the pyramid than I usually watch, the fact that it kicked off at 1.30 gave us a lot more room for manoeuvre to get to both matches without missing anything. We set off on the Saturday morning and after a short stop at the Wetherspoon pub in Keighley (The Livery Rooms, where they were celebrating Oktoberfest and dressed in traditional German garb) we arrived at the Doris Wells Memorial Ground. We were greeted by a friendly programme seller at the entrance where I purchased a programme for a pound (very good it was too) and admission was free! We were quickly introduced to several people at the club including manager Roy Mason and committee man Norman ‘Dusty’ Rhodes and were made to feel very welcome from the off.

After purchasing a club pin badge and some food, including some yummy homemade ginger cake we found a spot to watch the game near the home dugout. Although quite basic as you would expect it to be at this level, the facilities and setting were very good. It was a beautiful day giving a clear view of the surrounding Yorkshire hills and Jubilee Tower so my hopes were high to capture some good pictures. The game ended in a comfortable 5-0 victory to the hosts who you felt had another gear should they need it. The Bingley keeper deserves credit too as he pulled off several fine saves to keep the scoreline fairly respectable. I was quite happy with the pictures I took that day, especially as I was experimenting with a new zoom lens for the first time. My efforts can be found on Steeton AFC’s page on Facebook should anyone wish to see them or check the club out. With time ticking before our next game we had to beat a hasty retreat but not before Roy gave me a Steeton shirt from the previous season and some programmes free of charge to send me on my

ospitality the ground to gain entry and did so after a very friendly but thorough steward had confiscated a can of energy drink and a tin of deodorant from Katie, explaining that they could potentially be used as projectile missiles or a flame thrower! On entering the stadium we proceeded to seek out Billy Bantam to add to our collection of photographs with football mascots. Billy was more than happy to oblige but some kid managed to ‘photobomb’ us and sneak into the background of an otherwise very good pic. Our view from inside Valley Parade

way. I would have to say that Steeton is one of the friendliest clubs I have ever visited (out of 250 or so up to now) and I would highly recommend a trip there to any football fan in the vicinity. The half hour journey from Steeton to Valley Parade (Coral Windows Stadium) went relatively smoothly although parking was an issue when we got there. After driving around for a while we found a spot about 10 minutes walk from the ground, parked up and headed back to pick up our tickets. One of the first things Katie and I saw at the ground were the sculpture and memorial to the 56 people tragically killed in the fire of 1985. I remember as a 9 year old watching the scenes on tv, not really old enough to comprehend the horror of it all at the time. We paused in thought at the memorial and I have to admit I felt terrible sadness at the tragic loss even to this day. Some of the victims were as young as 11 years old and varied in age up to seniors who had followed the Bantams for decades. May they rest in peace. We walked round to the Midland Road side of

The game itself was a good one and a typical derby but was marred slightly by the sending off of Bradford’s Stephen Darby just seconds into the second half following his 2nd yellow card. The Blades capitalised on their numerical advantage and scored twice past on loan Sunderland keeper Jordan Pickford. Undeterred, the 10 men of Bradford battled to the end, spurred on by their fantastically vocal supporters but were unable to cut the deficit despite going close several times. After finally getting out of the traffic near the ground and via another Wetherspoon pub (this time the Bowling Green in Otley) we arrived back home in time to catch most of the Football League Show (but missing Sunderland’s horror show at Southampton on Match of the Day). It had been a day of contrasting levels of football but the fantastic friendly welcome was consistent throughout. Steeton and the Bradford fans had made it a day to remember as one of our best ever away days. The bar has been set high but can anybody beat these two exceptional clubs on hospitality? I’ll let you know in the forthcoming weeks.

Q & A with Lee Kerr Ron Aitchison

As a “youth” who were the footballers you admired the most? Alan Shearer, Peter Beardsley and Rob Lee Who have been the biggest influences on you as a player? My family have always supported me wherever I have played. Player Manager Ian Chandler for guiding us (Whitley Bay) to three FA Vase finals. During your playing career who would you consider the best opponent you have faced? When I was younger Aaron Lennon always stood out as a young star What do you consider the best non league grounds you have played on? Bishop Auckland just for the pitch it is like a carpet. In your career who would you consider to be the best player you have played alongside? Might get a bit of stick for this but Mr Chow (kerrchow) Who would you consider being the best team mate you have played alongside at Seaham? Lewis Wing, based on natural talent, and we seem to have built up a good understanding. Looking back what is the favourite game you have been involved in? My first FA Vase final, when I was the first to score at the new Wembley. Which professional team do you follow and why? Newcastle United, I was influenced by my family. Any special routines or “superstitions” do you follow and why? None really, but I must have clean boots, I cannot wear a pair of dirty boots. What does the Northern League mean to you?

The Northern League means a lot to me, good standard of football in both divisions playing against good opposition every week. Competing against players in my position that have not made it into the “pro” game but mainly just happiness as I love kicking the ball about. What would like to see the Star achieve in the hot too distant future? Promotion to Division One, anything else would be a bonus. What is your occupation outside of football? Industrial door engineer Who would you consider the finest footballer you have ever seen? Zinadene Zidane.
