View from the Dugout

G

Words from owner and manager, Richie McLoughlin Good afternoon everyone and welcome to the Boldon C.A Sports ground for today’s Ebac Northern League Division 1 match against Consett. I’d like to extend a very warm welcome to everyone who has travelled over from Consett, their officials, players and supporters,

and apart from the result, I hope they all have a safe and enjoyable visit to South Tyneside. They have been a few changes since our last game here - some players have left and some have come in. I’m pleased with the quality we’ve brought in. Cogs, Fairiey, Josh and Callum are all top players and join the exciting Kerry Hedley who made his debut last time out at home against Dunston. Consett could be like a bear with bad head today after their FA Vase defeat on Tuesday night. They will give it more today than they did as they slipped out of the Vase against South Shields. We must be on the ball today if we are to take the three points. We need to get our act together and cut out the silly misstakes that have cost us in most games. There’s the habit that we’re losing games because of mistakes but we have a chance of moving forward today. I’m sure we have the players to make an impact but we must work harder on the simple things, like looking after the ball.

Enjoy the game and ha’way the Roofers.

Dava's View Words from the assistant manager, Ian Davison

I

It’s been a while since our last home game and today’s match will certainly be a cracker.

Colin Myers, once on Roofing’s books, will certainly want to pick up the three points today, more so after Consett were knocked out of the FA Vase in midweek. You could argue that this could be the right time to play them, after that Vase disappointment and having played the extra time on Tuesday night. Our squad is looking good and raring to go, and all in all, our preparations have went well . We had a solid training session on Thursday and that should bring about a few changes to set plays and our shape during games. It should have us fine tuned for today’s game. I hope everyone will enjoy the match and ho’way the Roofers.

It’s going to be great to get back to business today against Consett.

It’s been way too long without a match, although personally the rest has done my injury and other little niggles the world of good. With the rest we have had, we will be raring to go and, hopefully, with a full squad today there’s plenty of competition for places. With four strong signings for us recently, that will create healthy competition in the squad. We need to get off to a positive start today and make sure we do the simple things well and maintain a solid shape throughout. We have a lot of creativity in our team so we will get opportunities in front of goal but we must do the ugly side of the match just as well. Today will be a great test. Enjoy the match, everyone.

Roofing round-up

A quick round-up of the latest Roof news

I

It's been an eventful few weeks for new signing Kerry Hedley. First a superb debut, then an early injury in his second game that put him out for a while. Then, on his return, another injury. That's meant he's not had a chance to train, but he has been travelling up from Darlington. To cap it all, there's the story of the 'lost 10k'. Buying a scratch card before training, Kerry was leaping about thinking he'd won 10 grand. After all, he had the same symbols that would've won that amount on the last card he'd bough. After finishing loud celebrations, he looked closer and realised he hadn't even won 10p. Oh well, Kerry! There was 10 grand worth of entertainment for the lads at least.

Both Jack Errington and Kieran Wrightson have left the club. Erra received an approach from Bedlington and stated he wished to go to help them stay up this season. Kie has went to Benfield after admitting that things hadn’t worked out as he hoped at Roofing. Both lads were top class, on and off the pitch, and in football players come and go. Both leave a positive impression on everyone here at Boldon and we wish them well. Another departure is Mick Mulhern who has returned to management in the women’s game. He’s joined Sheffield to oversee their assault on the WSL. Having joined in the summer, Mick introduced different things to coaching and to our tactics set-up. We wish him all the best in his new role.

Replacing Mick is Richie Lattimer. Identified by both Richie McLoughlin and Andy Hudson as someone who would benefit the club, Richie Latts brings new energy and awareness to his role of first team coach. Previously assistant to Scotty Oliver at Birtley before managing Washington and Killingworth, Latts watched our last game against Ashington and will be in the dug out once he completes his release from scouting for Fleetwood. Spare a thought for the returning Josh Allan. We thought he might have been on the pop before training last Saturday, though it turned out he turned up for an indoor session on those old school sports hall floors in the wrong shoes. Every time he went to touch the ball he resembled a penguin on ice, sliding all over the place. Mind, goalkeeping coach Andy Hudson’s first pass saw his soleless footwear drop him to the deck as well. It was Richie’s birthday last weekend. “Still 39,” he laughs. With the postponement of the North Shields game, he and Jan were able to get away for the weekend. They waited to book it, mindful of Jan’s birthday two seasons ago. With a free Saturday in January 2014, they’d booked to go to Leeds. Fancy hotel, nice meal, good time... and then a game against Northallerton was scheduled at the last minute to scupper their plans. They eventually made it to Leeds in November 2015.

Consett History

Meet the visitors

If you’re looking for international parallels then Consett are as close as the Northern League comes to Germany’s luckless Schalke 04. Title runners-up in 1977, 2008, 2009 – when they went into the final afternoon needing only a point to lift the championship, surrendered a 2-0 half-time lead and conceded Whitley Bay’s winning goal with just seven minutes left to play – and 2011, the Steelmen have had better fortune in knockout competitions, winning the Northern League Cup in 1994-95, the Durham Challenge Cup six times and making it all the way to the first round proper of the FA Cup in both 1958-59 and 1996-97, when fourteen bus loads and 1,000 travelling supporters saw them downed 4-0 at Mansfield Town.

Founded in 1899 as Consett Celtic, the club played its first competitive league fixtures in the 1919-20 Northern Alliance and has since taken part in the North Eastern, Midland Northern Counties, Wearside – championship bridesmaids again in 1969 and 1970 - and Northern Leagues. Consett’s first stadium, the Vicarage Field, was lost to the town’s expanding steelworks in the late-1940s. Its replacement, the Belle Vue, originally had two stands, one paid for out of the proceeds of Tommy Lumley’s move from the North Eastern League to First Division Charlton Athletic. Built by steelworkers using waste materials from nearby mine workings, the Belle Vue opened in 1950 with a game against Sunderland Reserves watched by a 7,000 crowd and closed its doors in 2013 with a Northern League Cup final between Spennymoor Town and Newcastle Benfield. Wonderfully atmospheric “If a child of the 1950s had been asked to paint

the perfect non-league football ground it would have looked, externally at least, like the gloriously haphazard Belle Vue,” thought Northern Ventures Northern Gains – the old ground was much loved but increasingly ruinous. “The roof ’s hanging on by a thread, the water’s pouring through, the terraces are crumbling and the cement’s porous,” treasurer Andrew Pearson commented after the final game. A £3 million replacement at nearby Crookhall - “A beautiful facility,” said chairman and benefactor Frank Bell – was unveiled by Peter Beardsley in November 2013. What the new-build lacks in aesthetics, it makes up for in extra revenue, with an all-weather surface, café and floodlit pitches for hire. While Kenny Lindoe departed earlier this year after a decade in charge, former Roofing assistant boss Colin Myers steered the Steelmen to ninth in the final table, aided by another 36 league goals from ex-Hartlepool United striker Michael Mackay, who recently made his 300th appearance for the club. Eighth this season, Consett have completed an impressive league double over Shildon, come within eight minutes of the FA Cup’s third qualifying round and netted 46 times in just 15 home matches, with Mackay already closing in on 20 goals in all competitions. More brittle on their travels, the County Durham side have lost on recent trips to Dunston UTS, Morpeth Town and Seaham Red Star, their momentum hit by injuries and the weather. MICHAEL HUDSON

The majestic Belle Vue

If you’re looking for omens, the last time Roofing and Consett played each other twice in the space of two weeks was back in 2003.

The first game - here on South Tyneside finished 2-0 to the Roofers with Belle Vue seeing the same scoreline two weeks later.

With Consett hosting the return fixture a fortnight today, what we would give for a repeat of those two results. This fixture started unspectacularly back in 1997. Roofing, new to the first division, went to Consett’s majestic former home and drew 0-0. It was 1-1 at Roofing later that season while the following campaign saw another 0-0 at Consett. Then the goals arrived. 30 January, 1999: Roofing 4 Consett 6. And more goals back in 2012 as Consett hammered Roofing 5-0 at Belle Vue. Yet this same game last season brought a five-star John Campbell performance when he grabbed all five goals without a Consett reply, including one strike from within his own half. There might have been plenty of draws between the clubs, but there’s always the possibility of a cracker, as history has shown. ANDY HUDSON

Our Guests

#theroofareonfire

Consett introduce us to their playing squad Peter Jeffries Goalkeeper Began at Wearside League Hartlepool FC before linking up with Colin Myers and John Bottenschein at Bishop Auckland, winning the Durham Challenge Cup in 2013, and sweeping the board at their annual awards two years running. This earned a move to Spennymoor Town, where he won the Northern League title, Cleator Cup and DCC in his first season. Rejoining Myers at Blyth Spartans in the Evo-Stik Premier in 2014-15, he played a major part in their run to the FA Cup 3rd Round.

Ryan Bell Defender This is the 29-year-old’s sixth campaign at Consett, and it’s the same as the last three, when he’s had wretched luck with injuries. An ex- Sunderland Academy player with lots of pace and skill, he signed in September 2010 from Ryton, where he’d spent three years. Previously with Ashington and Newcastle Blue Star.

Paul Buzzeo Defender Signed from Whitley Bay on 15 September. The 32-year-old is a hugely-experienced Northern League player, who won the title with Newcastle Benfield in 2009 and has also played for Ashington, Morpeth Town, Shildon and West Allotment, among others, after starting out at Gateshead.

their Player of the Year last season. Made his debut in the 1-1 draw with West Allotment Celtic on 29 September.

Dan Madden Defender Signed a new two-year contract in the summer after impressing in his first season at Belle View. Released from Sunderland Academy in April 2011, he signed for Durham City, where he spent three seasons. After joining Consett in July 2014, his attitude and organisational skills saw him made club captain.

Lance McGlen Defender A recent recruit to bolster the defensive ranks, Lance was signed on 13 November from Bedlington Terriers, where he started this season after a couple of years at Ashington. An ever-present last season for the Colliers, he works hard, has pace and strength, and is equally happy at right-back or centre-half.

Ryan McKinnon Defender A commanding 19-year-old centre-back, who was signed on August 1, after being released in the summer by Newcastle United, where he had eight years at the academy. A no-nonsense defender who likes to keep his play simple, he lives in the Consett area.

Jordan Lavery Defender

Adam McLane Defender

Jordan is a 20-year-old left-back who signed from Bishop Auckland on 28 September, and made his debut in the 1-1 draw with West Allotment Celtic the following night. Has already shown willingness to get forward and deliver great balls into the opposition box.

The big centre-half made his Northern League bow at Whickham, where he won the Durham Challenge Cup in 2006. Colin Myers signed him for Bishop Auckland in June 2011, where he soon became a fans’ favourite, but was out for two years after suffering the same cruciate injury twice. Joined Consett in the summer.

Stephen Little Defender Stephen, 28, is an experienced Northern League centre-back who signed from Bedlington Terriers on 28 September, after impressing against Consett nine days earlier. He was the Terriers’ captain and

Mark Eccles Player-Coach At 35, our most experienced player, and one of Belle View’s biggest characters. Now in his third spell with his hometown club, he recovered from a heart

11 attack in training in summer 2012 to defy the odds and play again. His sweet left foot has also been used to good effect at Crook, Tow Law, Gretna, Workington and Ryton.

Kieran Megran Defender/Midfield

Sunderland Academy, the Consett-born playmaker also had spells at Durham City, Dunston UTS and Blyth Spartans.

Ryan King Forward

An ex- Boro Academy player who had spells at Darlington and Esh Winning before joining Consett under Kenny Lindoe in 2010-11. Returned to Esh before Colin Myers took him to Bishop Auckland in 2012, where he was another member of their Durham Challenge Cup-winning team.

Re-signed in August after returning from the USA, where he played college football for two years. Made his debut aged 16 in January 2012, and got his first goal on his first start v Shildon three months later. Scored 7 goals in 29 games under Kenny Lindoe, while attending Gateshead College Academy.

Danny Craggs Midfield

Michael Mackay Forward

Local lad Craggsy, 31, is a fans’ favourite due to the fact he gives 100% wherever you play him. He was re-signed from Dunston UTS, with whom he won the FA Vase in 2013, on October 24 last year after being part of the squad which finished runners-up in 2010-11.

Earned a place in the record books last season when he became all-time top goalscorer, passing Colin McLeod’s club record of 241. Scored 78 in 72 games in 2005-07, earning a four-and-a-half-year pro contract at Hartlepool United. On his release in 2011 he returned to pick up where he’d left off. He plundered 45 goals in his first season back, followed by 35, 43, and last season, 48, which saw him shortlisted for Northern League Player of the Year.

Joe Grant Defender/Midfield The 23-year-old was signed from 2nd Division Crook Town on 9 October, and made his debut in the 3-1 home win v West Auckland the following day. Loves a tackle and will run all day in the middle of the park. Can also play at right-back.

Dan Hawkins Midfield An ex-Middlesbrough Academy player who joined Bishop Auckland on his release. Had four seasons with them, winning the Durham Challenge Cup. With Blyth Spartans in the Northern Premier League in 2014-15, he played a major part in their run to the FA Cup 3rd Round.

Matty Slocombe Midfield Last season’s Players’ Player of the Year, Matty was also nominated for the second time for the Northern League’s Young Player of the Year award. Still just 21, he has already passed 150 appearances for the club, playing at everywhere from right-back to left-wing.

Calvin Smith Midfield A summer 2012 signing from Spennymoor Town, where he won three Northern League titles, Cal pulls the strings from midfield, and was Players’ Player of the Year in 2013-14. After starting out at

Luke Sullivan Forward A Consett lad signed from Tow Law in summer 2012 and made his debut at right-back, but it soon became clear his talents lay as a forward, and he scored 13 goals in his first season, including some spectacular strikes. After finishing joint-top scorer with Micky in 2013-14, with 43 goals, he was voted Player of the Year. In and out of the side last season, he still managed 28 goals,

Michael Sweet Forward An England U16 international, Sweety attended Gateshead College Academy, scoring regularly for the Reserves and U19s, but was released in May 2013. He joined Billingham Synthonia, where he scored 32 goals in his first season and 34 last term as Synners fought relegation.

Jake Fowler Forward Another recent signing, joining the exodus from Durham City on 13 November, and made his debut at Seaham four days later. Attended Middlesbrough Academy and signed pro terms with Boro, though never made the first team.

Ian Davison talks Man United to Consett

A Roofer since summer 2013, much travelled Ian Davison has put down roots at the Boldon C.A. Sports Ground. A gas fitter by trade, the Consett-based 35-year-old has been playing Northern League football since the age of 16. “The style of football was very hard to adjust to at first,” he remembers. “I’d been training with Manchester United at Durham three days a week until I was 14. My first few games were a bit of a shock. It was a tough league. In my eyes, probably even better than it is today.”

Scouted at 11, the left-back was released by Sir Alex Ferguson three years later and subsequently had an unsuccessful trial with Scunthorpe United before making his Consett debut. “You have to be strong, but I’ve always had a lot of self-belief,” he says. “Back then players were probably not as quick as they are now but I think there was more love for the game itself. When I started out I went from training with Manchester United to playing for £5 a week.” Two spells at the old Belle Vue – “A wonderful ground but it was ageing badly” - sandwiched a couple of years at Chester-le-Street Town, before Davison left Consett for good in 2003. “They’ve made massive steps in the right direction since then and Frank Bell and his family have been great. As a local lad, the club will always be close to my heart and it’s

There were just too many egos in the dressing room and not enough togetherness in the squad. Richie and I had to act to change things for the good of the club and now we’re all pulling in the same direction

brilliant for the town to see them doing so well. The new ground is really impressive once you get used to the cold.” After Consett, the affable full-back spent five years as a player with Tow Law Town, won the Northern League title with Durham City, and also turned out for Nissan before making his first steps into management with the Lawyers in 2011-12. “My time at Durham was one of the achievements I’m most proud of,” he says. “They had a fantastic squad at the time and it was hard for me to break into the team. It took six or seven weeks before I got my chance but I never looked back.” He has less happy memories of taking charge at Tow Law, the club being relegated from the top-flight along with the Roofers and Stokesley after budget cuts and disagreements with the committee made his position untenable. “It wasn’t all bad,” he recollects, “but I felt disrespected. It put me off management but one day I’d like to do it again. I’ve learnt so much since then, both here and as assistant to Colin Wake at Chester-le-Street.” “Colin invited me back and I also ended up

15

playing again for them a few times too. When I first came to Roofing in 2013 it was just as a player. Of course, I knew all about how Richie had built the club from scratch. Him and Janice are fantastic. It’s really remarkable what they’ve both achieved here. It had always been a difficult place to come to as a player.” When Paul Bennett and Dean Nicholson left midway through his first season, Davison stepped in as assistant manager. “Richie and I are a good fit,” he says. “We bounce ideas off each other. I learn from him and he learns from me.” Following last season’s 7th place finish, hopes that the club could do even better this time out

When I started out at Consett I went from training with Manchester United to playing for £5 a week have been dashed by early exits from all four cup competitions and seven defeats from 14 league games. “It was a nightmare,” he confesses. “There were just too many egos in the dressing room and not enough togetherness in the squad. Richie and I had to act to change things for the good of the club and now we’re all pulling in the same direction.” Having lost Lewis Teasdale to South Shields, loaned ex-Oxford United striker John Campbell to Newton Aycliffe and seen a number of summer signings depart the club, the recent additions of Washington skipper Michael Coughlan, Durham duo Callum Patton and James Fairley, ex-Darlington wideman Kerry Hedley and Horden’s Josh Allan promise brighter times to come. “We’ve made some excellent signings and we targeting a good run-in. Most of all, we want to enjoy the rest of the season, starting with Consett this afternoon.” MICHAEL HUDSON

“I still remember it today. He was 17-years-old, so small, when he made his debut for Consett against Tow Law.”

Father remembers son. “And he should’ve scored that day as well! Typically he chose to pass instead.” From that first game onwards, they’ve been a regular feature in the Northern League – Ian playing left-back and Brian watching him, usually from the side of the pitch that Ian occupied. It’s different now though. With appearances reduced, Brian watches from the left-back side of the pitch but doesn’t move to the other side at half-time anymore. “I’ve actually been following Ian around watching him play for over 28 years in total,” laughs Brian. “And there have been far too many highlights to be able to pick one single one out. Mind, there have been a couple of nightmares, but I’ll not go into those.” Typically of Brian, something that anyone who knows him will be well aware of, he focuses only on the positives. Then something comes to mind. “He scored a goal of the season contender at Tow Law once and he trained at Man United with Pop Robson. I loved those memories, as I do all of them.”

“I’ve done all sorts at the different clubs I’ve been at with Ian. I used to roll the pitch at Consett. I did whatever I could when he was player-manager at Tow Law. I actually ran a bar for three years to help his club!” And now, as a Roofer, Brian runs the club lottery and is also the home matchday secretary. Over the years he’s seen hundreds upon hundreds of games. “I love the Northern League. It’s much better than watching some of those so-called professional teams.” And the Davison family affair with the league doesn’t end with the males. There’s another driving force involved. Wife, and mother, Heather. “We couldn’t have done what we’ve done in football without her,” says doting husband. “She used to do the after-match food, looked after the match officials and when we were at Consett, she got a washing machine for the club so that they could wash their own kits. She’s helped out wherever we’ve been.” Ian, Brian, Heather. The Davisons: Consett based, but with an impact throughout the Northern League. ANDY HUDSON

With the FA Vase last week, and other postponements, not a lot of action has taken place but Seaham enjoyed a fine 3-0 midweek win over Consett before being thumped 4-0 off Benfield this past Tuesday. Lest Legs only in name

Why did the famous five walk 14 miles to a postponed game? It had to happen eventually. As part of his retirement wind down, Mike Amos is walking a combined total of 500 miles, taking in each of the 44 Northern League clubs, staggered throughout the season. There had to be one walk to a game that’s called off. And it just had to be to Boldon!

We started at the lifeboat opposite Marine Park and then had a 14 mile walk, mazing through South Tyneside, to the C.A. We probably had about 15 minutes in total where it stayed dry! Joining Mike and I were his mate, Kit Pearson, and from Roofing both Dave Ramsey and Jan McLoughlin – the first female to complete a full Last Legs walk, as we never tire of hearing about. Along the coast, into driving rain, all the way down through the Nook and the John Reid Road, via a Dickson’s breakfast, dissecting the Scotch Estate and then onwards to Simonside Hall to

mark 250 miles – the halfway point of Mike’s remarkable journey. A bird used my back as target practice –

Onwards, Northern League soldiers! luckily, in the wet, it wiped straight off! – while Dave also came a cropper thanks to animal waste, this time from a dog and their human failing to pick the muck up. Mike continued to step in deep puddles, submerging his ankle while Jan three times got splashed by a passing car driving through a HUGE puddle. Kit escaped unscathed – such is the South Tyneside hospitality. As we reached the halfway point the news arrived that we expected – but dreaded. The game against West Allotment was off. A 30 minute delay, huddled in a bus stop opposite Tesco on Newcastle Road while we sorted out the cancellation, and then on to meet Richie in McConnell’s in Jarrow, formerly the Crusaders and the pub where he and Brian Marshall set up the Roofing. We made it to the ground around five hours after starting, though we did stop for an hour in the pub. Then made our way to the Flat Tops for a much needed drink where we were joined by the

players after they had finished training. The craic flowed as much as the rain, though it was far more enjoyable. What would make things better is if you were able to support Mike. See www.lastlegs.northernleague.org for how you can help! ANDY HUDSON

As we edge ever closer to the busy Christmas footballing calendar, the headlines just keep on coming for former Non-League starlet Jamie Vardy.

The ex-Stocksbridge Park Steels, FC Halifax and Fleetwood striker Vardy has made a remarkable impact on the Premier League having equalled former Manchester United forward Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record of goals in ten consecutive games. His tenth of the season signified that he was not just a one season wonder having played Non-League football just four years ago. Talent is often buried in the most unlikely of places. But in recent weeks Non-League football has been dealt a tough card – perhaps taking away from the influence Vardy has had on the search for emerging talent. Unsurprisingly, Football League clubs have voted in favour of increased parachute payments for clubs relegated from League Two in to the Conference. The cash that clubs receive is set to ascend at an alarming rate. An unbelievable £750,000 will be on offer, meaning that relegation will result in around £474,000 being handed out followed by a “mere” £237,000 during a club’s second year in the National League. Not only does this sort of money draw parallels with clubs relegated from the Premier League (a sore subject for many football fans) but it allows clubs to readily spend in the notoriously “toughest” league to get out of. Cheltenham Town are sitting pretty at the top of the National League and, having been an

established Football League club for sixteen seasons, have the credentials to get back in to League Two. But just ask Luton Town fans and they will tell you that nothing is certain. Surely that is all part of the fun? Maybe ‘fun’ is not the right word for fans but the point of a promotion battle is to be competitive, prove you are better and have the best side win the league. Forest Green are certainly on Gary Johnson’s heels to book their first-ever place in the Football League and there will no doubt be more twists and turns as the season progresses. However, it begs the question of how long that will last with increased payments easing the blow of one of the biggest fears in football – relegation. Will we really have to rely on the FA Cup to provide us with excitement – although based on recent years that shouldn’t be too much of a problem. Rising star stories including that of Stevenage Borough, Crawley Town, Yeovil Town and Dagenham and Redbridge – clubs who have progressed up the ladder – are at risk of becoming a distant memory. These clubs now all currently face the prospect of the drop from League Two and surely giving them a head start defeats the object of their past achievements? We should be nurturing talent like Vardy and enjoying the competitive football in all leagues, not letting money cause conflict and resentment. So whichever match you may be watching, look out for the next big name as talent can overrule money. SHERIDAN ROBINS
