This year I feel that I have made substantial progress in COP, but mainly in my attitude towards it. I think that choosing a question that really interested me helped me to continue with the essay and to some extent the practical work, but I definitely lost my way. Through the development of my essay question from something that I feel very passionately about (food), to something that terrified me (semiotics), I feel that I have become more comfortable with engaging with texts and subject matter that I find challenging. Although I know that I have still not full grasped semiotics, I am glad that I took a chance and explored it in order to further my question. However, I think that the focus of my theory was far too narrow for my essay, and whilst I made the effort to find a range of sources, looking back on the extensive notes that I have been making in lectures throughout the year would have made that process a lot easier. I often feel that, especially with COP, that I have the ability to identify theorists and practitioners that link well in other people’s projects, but fail to do so in my own. this is very frustrating, but I think that being able to step back from my work and reassess my direction every so often would make it quicker to progress. I think that this year I have found the research and theory side of COP a lot easier and made better use of the library and online catalogues of articles and publications. I still haven’t used the book as regularly as I needed to, which I have found across all the modules as I seem to have an aversion to it. Despite this, I think that when I started to develop my proposal for work in 505, this allowed me to see the potential for COP and allowed me to make some insightful observations about the direction my work was going (or wasn’t going) and gave me further ideas for progression into COP3. What I do regret is that I didn’t have the same excitement about the COP tactical work throughout the year, and as a result I feel that the development of my practical work is lacking. However, in comparison to COP1 I know that I have made a more concerted effort to work in my journal. The setup of the practical journal being 70 pages really put me off from starting in it as I was under the impression it had to be neat, and I am generally messy in my sketchbook. This meant that a fair bit of the initial development work that I did was in a separate journal, so I think that the concertina book doesn't necessarily reflect my actual practical journey, but it can be seen on the blog. I know that my organisational skills for COP haven’t been very good, but I did make an effort to attend all of the sessions and lectures. I failed to incorporate into my time management enough time to focus on the practical work which meant that I focussed a lot more time into the essay. I do think that the practical work that I did could have gone better, but I think that once I found my focus it went a lot more smoothly. For a long time the work was too vague and I found it hard to focus, but once I started to narrow it down, it was more successful. Media experimentation could have been wider but I am starting to see that using materials that I am comfortable with isn’t a cheat, but it allows you to really push forward and develop technique and, dare I say it, style. The sessions that I enjoyed the most were when we were able to analyse texts, or discuss them as a group as they helped to build up study skills. One thing that I do wish I’d done is be more vocal in the sessions as I think that this will help me build up my confidence when collaborating, which I found was an issue in 503. If I were to embark on this project again, I would make an effort to use media that excited me, as I started enjoying COP when I realised I could incorporate freehand embroidery into my work. I need to take the chance next year to just do what I want to do and not what I think is expected of me, as I know that when I’m passionate about a project, it is far easier to work on.
