Brief & Research The Brief To create a cohesive series of illustrations to accompany the publication ‘The Value of Arts and Culture to People and Society’. 6 images that will accompany the publication ‘The value of Arts and Culture to People and Society’ by the Arts Council England. The images will also be applied to a publicity campaign for the organisation to raise the profile of local arts projects across the country. The articles will be published on the Arts council website and be part of the #culturematters campaign. the images will be editorial - a cover illustration and five other illustrations to sit alongside specific parts of the text, throughout the document. The editorial illustrations will work across a range of sizes; full page cover, full page, half page, quarter page and two smaller illustrations. Audience The audience will be a range of people - those viewing the campaign in the public sphere, and other who will see it as part of the targeted print campaign of the publication. Predominantly using digital skills to make my outcomes as this will reflect a real-world editorial brief which may have a quick turnaround. Distribution This will be across social media, including Instagram and via the Arts Council England website. Additionally, it will be printed and distributed at Arts Council funded events and used at arts and teaching conferences in packs available to visitors attending the related talks.

Initial Ideas I wanted the project to refelect the positivity and energy that drives the arts, and especially more local projects funded by the Arts council England. I was inspired by editorial artists such as Rune Fisker, Gizem Vural and Dadu Shin, who tend to focus a lot on texture and colour. I wanted to communicate the concepts in a subtle and indirect way, and keep the tone quite joyous. To link in with the promotion of the arts, I made a lot of textures and marks that could be combined with symbols to make an image.Â

Development

I wanted the colour scheme to be celebratory and positive, and originally planned to use colours across a rainbow to show the all-encompassing influence of the arts. To refine this, I chose bright colours and a more selective range so that I had a contemporary array of colours. To make the set of images cohesive, I chose five main colour to use across the series, and influenced by the artists (above), planned to add different combinations of the textures in a variety of colours to draw together the images as a series.
