5 Ways to Save Money on Halloween Costumes Dressing up is fun for kids, and it can also be a blast for parents as they piece together adorable outfits for the funniest photo-ops, capturing cherished memories that will last a lifetime. However, it can also be stressful when costume prices seem to rise more and more each year. Take the hassle out of the high prices with these tips for saving money on Halloween costumes!

TIP #1 – HOST A NEIGHBORHOOD/FRIEND COSTUME SWAP This idea is so simple. When you are done with a Halloween costume, you are usually done with it, unless a younger sibling could use it (see Tip #3). Next year it will not fit your growing child anymore anyway, and it just goes in a box in the basement. So why not offer it up to a neighbor or friend?

TIP #2 – VISIT YOUR LOCAL GOODWILL OR THRIFT STORE Not only do these stores often have a variety of gently used costumes to choose from, but they often have costumes that still have the original tags on them! It will allow your child to still look through a selection of costumes in their size, but save you money in the long run.

10 NortheastOhioFamilyFun.com | Fall 2020

TIP #3 – REUSE COSTUMES FROM OLDER SIBLINGS/COUSINS Just because your child has worn a costume, does not mean you can’t use it again. Often, younger siblings want to emulate their older brother or sister, and this is a wonderful way to let them do it. Plus, if you have the generic costume, the little one can still make it their own. You can swap out a wig or find a different pair of shoes to make an old costume feel like new.

TIP # 4 – MAKE IT YOURSELF Some of the most memorable and cherished costumes are made from the heart! You do not have to be the best seamstress or the craftiest parent to create something your child will love. Take a look at Pinterest for a few ideas. Old boxes can transform into a classic choo-choo train for your little conductor and that makeup you never used can become adorable face paint.

TIP # 5 – SELL AN OLD COSTUME Since last year’s costume is only gently used, consider selling it! Facebook groups often offer a place to sell items. Someone in your area might be looking to save on a popular style that you used last year. They will find exactly what they are looking for at a discounted price, and you will make a few extra dollars to put toward this year’s attire.

BACK TO SCHOOL LUNCH HACKS Packing lunches for over 10 years has taught me a valuable lesson: When it comes to lunch packing, keep it simple. Here are five tips & tricks that will help make lunch packing quick & easy.

CREATE A SIMPLE LUNCH PACKING SYSTEM In your pantry or a snack drawer, place all non-refrigerated lunch box items in small bins (beverage bin, healthy snack bin, treat bin). Then let the kids pick one item from each bin when packing their lunch.

USE FROZEN DRINKS TO KEEP THINGS COLD Store your beverages (water bottles, juice boxes) in the freezer and put them in the lunchbox ice-cold. They will defrost by lunchtime and do double duty by acting as an ice pack to keep the rest of the lunch chilled.

PREVENT FRUIT FROM BROWNING Most kids love apples, but will turn them away if presented with browned apple slices. To prevent this from happening, dunk the slices in a mixture of lemon water (1 cup water, 1 teaspoon lemon juice). This trick will keep the pre-sliced apples looking fresh all day.

MAKE YOUR OWN SINGLE SERVINGS BAGS Save money by buying larger bags of snacks (pretzels, crackers, chips) and creating your own single size bags. Use a Measuring Cup and Ziploc Bags to make the process quick and easy. Bonus Tip: Worried about broken chips? Blow some air into the bag before sealing the bag. This creates a little air pillow to protect them from breaking.

ENLIST THE HELP OF YOUR KIDS

Parent Poll

This is the most important tip of all because it has the biggest long term benefit. Have your kids help and start when they are young. Have them help early on and before you know it they’ll be old enough to pack the entire meal. The night before, have them help pack anything that can be assembled the night before. Then pop the entire lunchbox in the fridge.

What do you most often pack in your kids lunches? Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are my kids favorite. ~ Hallie S. Dinner leftovers in a thermos. ~ Becky B. Uncrustables, fruit snacks, pretzels and a drink. We try to make it easy so they can help pack. ~ Natalie K. Fall 2020 | NortheastOhioFamilyFun.com 13
