11 Questions to Ask when Choosing a Summer Camp

1

WHAT CHANGES DID THE CAMP IMPLEMENT RELATED TO COVID 19 SAFETY REQUIREMENTS?

Camps will have implemented a variety of new safety measures. Make sure the camp can clearly articulate the measures they have taken to ensure campers are safe, and that the camp and stay running smoothly.

2

WHAT IS EXPECTED FROM CAMPERS RELATED TO COVID 19 SAFETY REQUIREMENTS?

Are temperature screenings performed? Is wearing a mask required? What about social distancing? It’s important to understand what safety guidelines campers will be required to follow. This will help set expectations with your child.

3

HOW MANY CAMPERS ATTEND EACH SUMMER?

4

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY AT CAMP LOOK LIKE?

Each camp will have different attendance limits. There is no right or wrong size, but it is important to understand what environment your child is getting into and whether or not they will enjoy the experience. Typically, camps with fewer campers offer a more personalized experience while camps with larger numbers make up for it in activity options.

Knowing what your child is doing during a normal day will help you ensure your child gets the most out of their camping experience. For example, if your child is going to an art camp, will they spend all day painting or learning different art skills? If it’s a horseback riding camp, how often will they be with the horse versus doing other activities.

5

IS FOOD BROUGHT IN OR PREPARED AT THE CAMP?

Most of the time, this isn’t an issue. But for children with dietary needs, this can be a game-changer.

6

WHAT SHOULD YOUR SON OR DAUGHTER BRING TO CAMP?

The items needed will vary based on the specific camp and its important to set your child up for success by making sure they have all the necessary items. Ask for a camp packing list and determine if there are any items you need to purchase ahead of time.

7

CAN THE CAMP PROVIDE PARENT REFERENCES?

8

WHEN ARE THE REGISTRATION DEADLINES?

Oftentimes, parents will send their children to camp for the exact same reason. Knowing what different parents thought of the camp can help you plan your child’s trip better.

Knowing when the registration deadline is important so you don’t miss signing up. If possible register early just in case the spots fill up. There are often discounts available for early registrations as well. Continued on pg. 14

Spring 2021 | NortheastOhioFamilyFun.com 13

9

ARE ANY DISCOUNTS AVAILABLE?

Always ask if the camp offers discounts. Discounts may include early registration, referrals, multi-week or even sibling discounts. A simple question may result in a significant savings on registration cost.

10 ONCE YOU REGISTER FOR CAMP, CAN YOU MAKE A CHANGE?

There is always a potential for outside circumstances to impact the dates your child can attend camp. Because of that, it’s good to know if you have the flexibility to make changes to your camp registration and what you need to do in order to make a change.

11

WHAT IS THE CAMP’S CANCELLATION/REFUND POLICY?

What happens if you need to cancel, or if the camp needs to cancel? Find out what happens in either scenario and what the camps refund policy is after a cancellation.

PREPARING FOR OVERNIGHT CAMP: DO’S AND DON’TS

DO’S: ● ATTEND THE CAMP OPEN HOUSE: It’s your chance to meet and greet the camp staff and see what a typical day will look like. ● PREPARE AND PACK EARLY: It’s the best way to ensure you have all the items needed to set your child up for success at summer camp. ● PACK THE RIGHT CLOTHES: Kids will get dirty at camp. That’s part of the fun! Pack clothing you are ok with getting ruined, stained or lost. ● BUILD EXCITEMENT ABOUT THE CAMP: Talk about the fun camp experience will influence your child’s opinion on going to camp. Say things like, “you will have such a fun time” and “there are so many cool activities” will really help out your child. ● WRITE ENCOURAGING LETTERS: It’s exciting for kids to receive letters during camp. Let them know you are proud of them and how excited you are to hear about all the fun things they are doing. Continued on pg. 16

Spring 2021 | NortheastOhioFamilyFun.com 15

● TRUST THE CAMP: It can be hard on parents to send their kids to overnight camp. While those feelings are normal, it’s important to remember that the camp has the best interest of your child in mind and will take good care of them.

SUMMER CAMP PACKING GUIDE

DON’TS: ● FORCE YOUR CHILD TO ATTEND: Don’t force camp overnight on your child. Be sure they are ready, willing and excited about attending. ● WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO PACK: Doing so will most likely result in forgetting something important. The last thing your child wants to worry about is not having a necessary item. ● BRING EXPENSIVE ITEMS: There is always the risk of thems being lost or ruined. Don’t pack anything you would be upset with your child for losing. ● TALK NEGATIVELY ABOUT CAMP: Avoid comments like “that doesn’t look fun” or “I would never do that.” These comments could easily discourage your child. ● PROMISE THAT YOU WILL WRITE TO YOUR CHILD EVERY DAY: Even if you intend to write everyday, don’t tell them. In the event that a letter or email does not arrive for whatever reason, your child may begin to worry. ● VISIT THE CAMP: Your presence can interrupt your child’s process of getting comfortable at camp and can embarrass them. You’ll have the opportunity to talk to your child about camp once it is over.
