HONORARY
DEGREE
RECIPIENT
The Honorable Louis W. Sullivan, M.D. Louis W. Sullivan, M.D., is chairman of the Washington, D.C.-based Sullivan Alliance to Transform the Health Professions – a national nonprofit organization with a community-focused agenda to diversify and transform the health professions’ education and health delivery systems. He is also chairman of the board of the National Health Museum in Atlanta, Ga., whose goal is to improve the health of the nation by enhancing health literacy and advancing healthy behaviors. A native of Atlanta, Dr. Sullivan graduated magna cum laude from Morehouse College in 1954, and earned his medical degree, cum laude, from the Boston University School of Medicine. His postgraduate training included internship and residency in internal medicine at New York Hospital – Cornell Medical Center, a clinical fellowship in pathology at Massachusetts General Hospital, and a research fellowship in hematology at the Thorndike Memorial Laboratory of Harvard Medical School, Boston City Hospital. He is certified in internal medicine and hematology, holds a mastership from the American College of Physicians and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha academic honor societies. Dr. Sullivan became the founding dean and director of the Medical Education Program at Morehouse College in 1975. The program became The School of Medicine at Morehouse College in 1978, admitting its first 24 students to a two-year program in the basic medical sciences. In 1981, the school received provisional accreditation of its four year curriculum leading to the M.D. degree, became independent from Morehouse College and was re-named Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM), with Dr. Sullivan as dean and president. Additionally, he served as chair of the President’s Commission on Historically Black Colleges and Universities from 2002 through 2009, and was co-chair of the President’s Commission on HIV and AIDS from 2001 through 2006. In 1989, Dr. Sullivan accepted an appointment by President George H.W. Bush to serve as Secretary of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. In this cabinet position, Dr. Sullivan managed the federal agency responsible for the major health, welfare, food and drug safety, medical research and income security programs serving the American people. His efforts to improve the health and health behavior of Americans included leading the effort to increase the National Institutes of Health (NIH) budget from $8 billion in 1989 to $13.1 billion in 1993, establishing the Office of Research on Minority Health with the NIH (which has become the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities) and inaugurating the Women’s Health Research Program at NIH. Dr. Sullivan serves as an Emeritus Member of Research!America and has partnered with Northeast Ohio Medical University and the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation to establish the Action Plan for the Ohio Alliance toward “Making a Difference with Pipeline to Practice Initiatives that Promote Diversity.” Dr. Sullivan is the recipient of more than 60 honorary degrees, including an honorary doctor of medicine degree from the University of Pretoria in South Africa.

OATH
CLASS
OF
2015
Reflecting on the responsibilities that I will assume from here forward, as a member of the Class of 2015, I hereby pledge: • Each time I humbly don my white coat, I will be reminded of the responsibility that comes with the profession of medicine. I will uphold the integrity and humanism woven within a physician’s work. • I understand that my actions as a medical professional reflect not only on myself as an individual, but on the medical profession as a whole. I pledge to uphold this responsibility through the guidance of what is right, true, fair, and good. • I will respect the field of medicine as a science and an art. I will always make an effort to place the humanity of the patient above the science of the disease. I will treat each patient as a complex individual composed of body, mind, and spirit, rather than merely an illness. I will consistently place the patient’s quality and value of life as my utmost priority. • I will respect the vastness of medical knowledge, define the limits of my knowledge and develop my expertise in the field. I will take ownership of my own learning and consider myself a student throughout my career. Ultimately, I will always act in the best interest of the patient and seek to deliver the highest standard of care possible. • I will respect my patients as I respect the teachers who came before me, for they will teach us throughout the duration of the physician-patient relationship and beyond. In return, I will fulfill my obligation to educate my patients, colleagues and future students. • I am here to protect and serve the patient. I promise to be the patient’s voice when he or she is not able to advocate to the fullest extent required. • I pledge to always respect the confidentiality of the physician-patient relationship, within the clinical encounter and the larger scope of the health care system itself. From this moment on, I pledge to hold sacred their confidentiality and trust. • I will remember throughout my career, that I decided to enter medicine with honest and true intentions to help each patient, regardless of circumstance or background. I will make a conscious effort to approach each patient with empathy, an open mind, and with the ultimate goal of addressing their needs. It is my privilege, not my right, to practice the art of medicine and I will honor this privilege with integrity.

ACADEMIC
REGALIA
The academic regalia worn at commencement is of medieval origin and dates back to the 11th century. The scholars of Bologna, Salamanca, Paris, Oxford, Cambridge, Louvain and Heidelberg dressed in a manner that would distinguish them from merchants and other townspeople. The gown originally may have been worn to keep the teachers warm in unheated classrooms. The gowns of bachelor’s and master’s degree recipients are usually black without trimmings. The front of the doctoral gowns are faced with velvet and adorned with three velvet bars on the sleeves. The hood is lined with colors that denote the field of study represented by the wearer’s degree. The colors of the hood are those of the college or university from which the degree is granted. The length of the hood is correspondingly longer with each advanced degree. The Northeast Ohio Medical University hood was designed to reflect the colors of the University, blue and silver. •••••• The gold cords worn by selected faculty members identify those individuals who have been designated NEOMED Master Teachers. This honor recognizes faculty who have consistently excelled at advancing the art and scholarship of teaching and who have developed innovative teaching methods within the medical profession. The green and gold cords worn by members of the graduating class of the College of Medicine identify those who are Alpha Omega Alpha members. The white cords worn by members of the graduating class of the College of Medicine identify those who have been inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society. The purple and white cords worn by members of the graduating class of the College of Pharmacy identify those who are Rho Chi members. The yellow and green cords worn by members of the graduating class of the College of Pharmacy identify those who are Phi Lambda Sigma members. •••••• NEOMED is committed to preparing students for a health care career in a multicultural environment by increasing the diversity of the student body, faculty and staff and by enhancing policies, procedures and practices that support a collaborative environment. NEOMED is an equal opportunity employer and educator.
