d r u m m e r, I ’ v e n e v e r h e a r d a n y t h i n g l i ke i t . Since then I’ve become good pals with the Def Con lads and they even used my pics in the limited edition version of their new album Wa r f a c e . M y s i g n e d copy is my pride a n d j o y. I’ve done some other big (ish) bands, recently T h e We d d i n g P r e s e n t , T h e ra p y ? a n d R a n c i d . Where is your favourite location to shoot? Newcastle of course! I regularly do location scouting. I have quite a list of places to work in. Avoiding the clichés of course. Who wants to s e e a b a n d o n t h e Ty n e Bridge? Boring! Who has been the best band you have shot? Def Con One (I know I am biased!) Their gigs are awesome. I saw easily over 100 bands last year; theirs are the only gigs where I am buzzing with adrenalin fo r d a y s o n e n d ! Who was the worst and why? Erm… can’t name names but there have been a couple of howlers. Wo r s t o n e w a s a t a n “a r t s fe s t i v a l ” w e l l i t turned out to be a social club with some awful disco lights and the smallest stage I’ve ever seen. The bands told me the wrong stage times and I ended up waiting fo r 3 h o u r s w h i l e t h e y s o u n d c h e c ke d . T h e music was not to my liking , far from it! Still I g o t t h e s h o t s I c a m e fo r.

Have you had any e m b a r ra s s i n g i n c i d e n t s at a photoshoot? Not as such. My most e m b a r ra s s i n g t h i n g i s not recognising band members when I bump into them on the street! T h e y l o o k s o d i f fe r e n t on stage, I’ve made a fo o l o f m y s e l f a fe w times with the “have we met?” line, only to find t h a t I ’ v e t a ke n hundreds of pictures of the person in q u e s t i o n . A N I N T E R V I E W W I T H D AV I D A N D E R S O N Hi David, welcome to NE, so how about you introduce yourself to our readers and tell us a bit about yourself? I ’m 2 8 y e a r s o l d a n d currently work as an ICT teacher in South Shields. I’ve always enjoyed reading and have been interested in writing since I was a kid. I once got a 99% score in a creative writing assignment at s c h o o l - i t ’s o n e o f m y proudest moments! So how did your debut n o v e l “ T h e Wa n d e r e r ” come about? I’ve always been i n t e r e s t e d i n p o s ta p o c a l y p t i c l i t e ra t u r e s u c h a s T h e Ro a d , The Stand and I Am Legend so I suppose my novel was written in homage to these great books. I tried my best to put my own twist on the genre and pen something at least partially original and I think I did a pretty decent job. I started on the novel in my spare time about 4 and a half years ago. I’ve tried to fit as much writing into my days off a s p o s s i b l e b u t l i fe h a s a habit of getting in the way! Give us a quick synopsis of your book? M y b o o k fo l l o w s a survivor of a worldwide epidemic as he battles to survive in a desolate world on his own. Whilst I never explicitly mention where the s t o r y t a ke s p l a c e p e o p l e might recognise certain areas from the region if they pay close attention! Te l l u s a b o u t y o u r connection to Macmillan and your reason fo r g e t t i n g i n v o l v e d with them? In recent years I have lost a friend and a r e l a t i v e t o c a n c e r. I know Macmillan were a big support to both

of these people as they battled with the disease, so I thought it would be a nice gesture t o o f fe r a d o n a t i o n f r o m each sale of my book between January 21 and M a r c h 2 1 i n t h a n k s fo r their hard work. The final sum might not be g r e a t b u t I w o u l d l i ke to think I helped a very worthy cause even if it i s o n l y m i n u t e l y. How did you find writing “ T h e Wa n d e r e r ”, w a s i t an easy process or was it a real challenge? I went through stages where the work

alternated between easy and difficult. When I first started the novel I was at University and I had quite a bit of free time on my hands. I managed to produce a substantial amount of the novel in a matter of months during that period. Then I began working full-time and I fo u n d I h a d l e s s opportunity to dedicate time to writing. In my first year of teaching I think I must have only managed a chapter or two. In recent months I fo u n d t h e fo c u s t o f i n i s h the novel and typing up that final sentence w a s a n e x h i l a ra t i n g experience! Some sections come easier than others too. I had vivid ideas i n m y m i n d fo r m o s t of the story and these parts were a joy to write. Sometimes it is the linking together of these scenes that proves to

b e d i f f i c u l t . T h e r e ’s only so many times you can describe walking through countryside b e fo r e y o u s t a r t t o sound repetitive! T h e d a y b e fo r e I r e l e a s e the novel I spent 13 hours at my computer c h e c k i n g fo r e r r o r s . T h a t was probably the least enjoyable point of the w h o l e j o u r n e y. So have you got any plans to write novel number two or is that something to think about at a later date? I mostly write short fiction and have a couple of ideas in mind that I plan to work on i n t h e n e x t fe w m o n t h s . I currently have three short stories available f r o m A m a zo n a s w e l l a s the novel. I was a massive fan of Stephen King as a y o u n g s t e r. I h a v e p r e t t y much his entire back catalogue and pick up his new ones whenever p o s s i b l e . I ’m a l s o a b i g fan of Dan Simmons but I’ve only started reading h i s s t u f f r e c e n t l y. What is your all time favourite book? My all-time favourite h a s t o b e S a l e m ’s L o t b y Stephen King. I’ve read it about five or six times and I never tire of it. The picture he paints o f t h e t o w n ’s d e m i s e i s so vivid it is terrifying. Special mentions go to T h e To m m y k n o c ke r s b y King, Catcher in the Rye b y J . D.
