Hi Chris and welcome to NE Magazine, for the few readers who must be living in a cave somewhere and don’t know who you are how about giving th em a quick l ow- down o n yourself? - Hello! Can’t help but think I’m writing your interview introduction for you here, oh well… I’m a stand-up comedian from South Shields and I’m also a bit of an actor now and then… but mainly a comedian… that might not come across as well as it should in print form, but I am. So there. At the moment it’s hard not seeing you on the TV when we switch it on as you’re everywhere, but what has been the highlight for you so far? - Not everywhere though am I? If you turn on QVC and I’m selling a frying pan, just assume you’ll find me floating face down in a river very soon. The highlight for me so far was probably being in Hebburn. Since starting comedy I always wanted to try my hand at being in a sitcom too so I was over the moon to do one with my mate and so close to my heart, and I got to work with Vic Reeves. I know you had a bit of a crazy time with fans wanting pics and autographs when you were having a few drinks in a South Shields bar recently, how are you finding this, does it put you off going out? - Not at all. Any person in that position who has been on TV or whatever and people want photos (I’m trying my best not to say celebrity here!) who pretends they hate the attention is a liar. You don’t go for a career on TV because you don’t want anyone to notice you. As long as I’m not eating or having a shit when you want a photo then it’s no problem at all… I meant, like on the toilet, not just in the middle of the dancefloor.

2

Have you had any weird fan requests or incidents? - Not really. The odd person will show up to a gig with my face on a T-Shirt, or bake me a cake, or send me a dead animal in the post but other than that it’s just photos and autographs. A little kid in Hebburn when we were filming asked me to sign his micro scooter… that was a bit weird. As well as being a bit of a regular on Celebrity Juice, Never Mind the Buzzcocks and 8 out of 10 Cats you are now starring in the North East based sitcom Hebburn, how did that come about? - My mate and fellow comedian Jason Cook decided to write a sitcom about the town he was from, Hebburn, and he actually wrote me a little side part which he named after me. But when it came to being made the BBC asked me to read for the main character, and when I got it, Jason took the part that he’d written for me! It came about so gradually that I didn’t really realise the enormity of being lead role in a BBC2 sitcom until I saw the advert on TV. I nearly passed out. How has the response for Hebburn been so far? - Overwhelmingly positive. And we just won Best Drama at the RTS North awards too. And we’ve got a second series! You are now embarking on your biggest tour to date, how do you feel about this? - Yeah incredible! It’s an extension of my last tour, Feeling Lucky. I did 60+ dates in 2012 but the demand for tickets was so high and people enjoyed the show so much that I’m doing another 40 odd dates this year in much bigger venues. I can’t wait to get back out on the road.

Are there any venues on the tour that you are looking forward to playing or any you’re quite nervous about? - The Theatre Royal in Newcastle. I absolutely can’t wait. I used to watch panto there when I was a kid. I’m

Amy MacDonald and Newton Faulkner gig review By Leanne Tonks Every once in a while, an artist will emerge onto the popular music scene with a toe-tappingly catchy first single that will storm the Top 40 for a number of weeks, before they disappear back into the indie underground with a newly acquired fan base, thirsty for more music. Two artists who have enjoyed a

6

taste of such commercial success are Amy MacDonald and Newton Faulkner. Exploding onto the scene with their respective hit singles back in 2007, both Amy and Newton earned themselves a loyal following during their time at the top, and it is fair to say that their North East-based fans came out in force to see them when they took to the stage at Newcastle’s iconic City Hall last month. Ambling bare-foot onto the stage as though he were no more important than one of the stage hands, an unassuming Newton Faulkner kicked off the evenings’ entertainment before the majority of the audience had even taken their seats. Playing acoustic versions of tracks from all five of his albums, including a number of track previews from album number

six, which is as yet untitled and unwritten, Newton’s haunting harmonics, signature fingerpicked style and cool vocals held the audience captivated. Sipping tea from a paper cup, between songs Newton joked about the silence in the room, to

which the audience responded with a polite laugh before returning to their tight-lipped appreciation of the music.

a standing ovation from the audience before he left the stage to make way for the evening’s headline act.

About half-way through his set, Newton broke into his charttopping single ‘Dream catch me’ which got everybody singing along, but for me, the standout performance of the night was when he played an acoustic version of his track ‘Against the grain’. Slowed down and stripped right back to just one guitar and a voice, the track allowed Newton to show off his impressive vocal range, something which doesn’t necessarily translate as well on record as it does live.

In stark contrast with Newton Faulkner’s laid-back set, Amy MacDonald gave an incredible performance which could only be described as high-energy

Rounding off his portion of the evening with what he referred to as his “party piece”, Newton played an energetic cover of Queen’s hit, “Bohemian Rhapsody”, complete with vocal effects and an accompanying light show which earned him

from the get go. Dancing onto the stage to tumultuous applause from the crowd, Amy belted out a number of hits from her new album ‘Under Stars’ before addressing the crowd with a simple, “Hello Newcastle” in her deceptively sweet Scottish accent which belies her powerhouse singing voice. 2017 marks the 10th anniversary of Amy’s hugely successful debut album, ‘This is the life’, which brought us the hit single of the same title and also, the infectiously catchy, ‘Mr Rock and Roll’. Amy informed the crowd during a break between songs while she sipped on Lemsip to keep her vocal chords working that the album had just been awarded triple platinum status in the UK, giving credit to her fans for their continued support. From this point, the rest of Amy’s

7

set felt more like a celebration than a concert. At most gigs, the audience for the most part remain in their seats until a particularly lively song comes on, and then little pockets of the audience might stand up to dance for a while. At Amy’s concerts however, seating allocations become completely irrelevant, as the high-tempo music and the energy with which Amy performs keeps everybody on their feet. Although Amy’s set list was primarily made up of tracks from her own albums, she did treat the crowd to one cover, her own version of the Doobie Brothers 1970s classic, ‘Listen to the music’, claiming that it was one of her favourite songs to perform. Like all good things, the show did eventually come to an end, but not before Amy performed not one, but five encores, leaving the stage twice before finally bringing the evening to a close.

8

On the way out of the City Hall, I managed to grab a quick selfie with Newton Faulkner, who was hanging around the

merchandise stand graciously signing autographs and CDs. Newton has just announced his own headline UK tour for later this year, so watch this space for future reviews!

michael terrill

Hi Michael, welcome back to NE, can you give our readers a quick introduction? Hello my name is Michael Terrill, I’m 33 but look younger and I’m from North Shields. A lot has changed since you were last featured in NE as you no longer compete in K1, instead transferring over to Bare Knuckle Boxing where you have just become the interim BKB World Heavyweight Champion, how does it feel to be crowned the champion? Yeah my k-1 days are gone now, it’s a hard sport and recovery time is becoming longer as I’m getting older. It takes its toll on your legs. But I’m now concentrating on bare knuckle boxing with the largest

company in the game being UBBAD BKB. It feels good winning the interim belt but I still want to cement it in stone by winning the title outright. A lot of people in the BKB scene doubted your ability even though you have a wealth of experience in combat sports, how did that feel going into your fight against John Lewis? Yeh I was the underdog going into that fight even though I’d already beat John in a gloved fight previously, to be honest every BKB fight I’ve went into bar one I’ve been the underdog. It never bothers me really; people have a point of view on everything and more so on fighters. I don’t like s**t talking, I just get in and do it. Hopefully, having a laugh along the way. In time people will see that kickboxers actually punch too.

will he be your first title defense so that it will be undisputed when you win or will that be a fight further down the line for you? I’m unsure at present, Michael has a few personal issues he is sorting out at the minute and if I was in his shoes, fighting would be the last thing on my mind. I hope everything works out well for him. When he gets things sorted I’m sure it will happen. What made you swap over from fighting K1 to fighting BKB instead? I love k-1, I still do. In fact I teach it at my gym called The Manor Gym, but like I said earlier it takes its toll on your legs and I was

You have already said you are not the champion until you beat the champion, which was Michael Ferry, who was stripped of his title due to not being available to fight for quite a lengthy time period, so

25

getting more and more injuries after each fight. Although the bare knuckle comes with its hazards (I’m busy nursing a broken hand right now) I can walk after fights with no problems lol. I’d also be lying if the purse never come into play too, BKB is very extreme and can be brutal at times and with that comes a very good purse. It’s also very exciting and you have to be on edge throughout the whole fight. If you switch off for a second it can be lights out. You have fought some massive names in the ring, but who would you say has been your toughest opponent to date, be it K1 or BKB? My toughest opponent/fight to date would be the fight I had with Arnold Oborotov. I had fought at 87kg the month before and was set to fight Oborotov at 95kg. For some reason I just couldn’t put any weight back on, I was eating a litre of ice cream every night for a month and still only weighed

26

in at 88kg. Arnold weighed in at 96kg on a day before weigh in and I thought its only 1kg, there’s no point making him skip it off. Come the fight day though, Arnold looked like he had put on about 10kg, he was huge. I ended up with a cracked palette that night but still fought a half decent fight and lost on a decision. If you could fight anyone who would it be and why? If I could fight anyone it would be Adolph Hitler coz I hate him and

what he stood for and would love to of smashed his face in. BKB is still looked down on by a lot of people who see it as a spectacle rather than a sport, what would you say to those people? I think BKB is gaining popularity by the second and along with the popularity comes the money. People want to be involved in it and don’t mind throwing money at it. Whether it be for VIP tables or sponsoring fights or fighters. Once there’s money you can attract the bigger names. Luckily Joe Brown and Jim Freeman spotted the popularity of the sport early on and steered it in the right direction and instead of pocketing all the takings they’ve invested it back in to the company attracting big name American pro boxers and ex UFC fighters. As for it being a spectacle it reminds me a lot of when the MMA first kicked off, it started off a little bit rough around the edges but

then quickly turned into a sport with structured rules. It’s exactly the same in BKB. It started in hay bails in the middle of a barn where two chip shop brawlers would stand toe to toe which is entertaining but I think now that there’s rules and a proper set up your starting to see a lot of ex pro boxers making the switch, former mma fighters switching over and kick boxers all putting their boxing skills to the test with no gloves on. People are now seeing a lot more skill in BKB fights. How different is BKB/UBBAD as a promotion compared to other fight promotions you have worked with in the past? BKB/UBBAD is the best company I’ve fought for, Jim and Joe are down to earth normal people, they always answer the phone if you’ve got anything to ask. The pay is great and always on time, they’re in constant contact with you and let you know everything that’s gonna happen before it’s released publicly in case you have any input or worry over it. I had the same good treatment fighting with DUEL too. But I’ve also fought for companies

where you don’t get this respectful treatment and it can be a bit of a letdown when you put your body on the line for them. When will you be fighting next? I’m hoping to be fighting in September depending on my hand, I don’t know who against yet but if my hands healed I’ll definitely want to be fighting. As well as fighting yourself, you

are the main coach at The Manor Gym, can you tell us a bit more about The Manor? Yes I run a gym called The Manor Gym along with Andrew Davison, Shaun Barry (featured last Issue) and Baz Jones. It’s mainly a K-1 gym (Dutch style Kick Boxing) but I cater for all stand up side of combat sports. We get in ThaiBoxers, K-1 style fighters, Kick Boxers, unlicensed Boxers, amateur Boxers and we even get in a Wing Chung practitioner for our K-1. If people want to learn how to kick, punch and knee people I’ll help them do it. We cater for all levels and ages from beginners to champion level, we start from having kids age 7 to a 63 year old male and female. We’ll help anyone who walks through the door. Also apart from my k-1 class we also have Simon Gould running Cross Fit classes and Manny Burgo and Paul King running an amateur boxing school out of the gym too. Every day the gym is open with some sort of combat or fitness class on. Do you have to be a fighter to

27

train at The Manor? No you don’t have to be a fighter to train with us we have lots of people who train with us who do it either to keep fit or gain confidence some people sometimes just come for the craic. My gym is very friendly with no animosity there’s no back stabbing or awkwardness in the gym everyone is welcome and treat well. What is the hardest part about coaching others? The hardest part about training others is having the time left to train yourself. I work full time, I have 3 kids, two dogs that need walked and a wife. Sometimes it’s hard to fit it all in. What is the best part of coaching? The best part of coaching is when

28

you see them win their fights. It’s a proud moment as a coach but seeing the buzz in their face after such an accomplishment is amazing. You have some top prospects coming up now flying the flag for The Manor, tell us your thoughts on them and who people should be looking out for at shows? Yes I’ve got some good fighters coming up through the ranks at present but three in particular Robert Barry

Joe Johnson and Anth Hollis All three are between 65kg and 70kg so it’s great for their sparring, all three can give each other problems too so it’s great to watch. I’m telling you, people would pay to watch them spar. They’re bouncing new ideas off each other when sparring and trying new things and it’s paying dividends for them. Robbie has already won a title but I don’t think it will be too much longer before Anth and Joe have themselves a new belt too. How important is it to have the guys from the gym there for each other in the build up to a fight? It’s very important to have support from your team mates when you’ve got a fight coming up especially from the ones roughly

the same weight. If your 60kg it’s no real point in sparring someone 100kg so when fights are coming up everyone needs to be in the gym. If they can’t get in the gym we have to look elsewhere for sparring. What advice would you give to anyone that is interested in training or even competing? The advice I would give is to simply ‘just go’. Don’t wait for your mate to go too coz your always gonna be dependent on having to go with someone. Go on your own if you really want to do it. That’s what I did. I was just a timid kid at school, I never tried to get into any fights and had no intention of getting into any. I started just to keep fit and I managed to do quite well. If I can do it anyone can. Why should people come to The Manor rather than another gym? I would never tell anyone to come to my gym over anyone else’s gym. There are 5 important things to look for when finding your perfect gym. #1. Is it local? #2. Does it teach the correct things? #3. What is the cost? #4. Is the gym friendly? #5. Does it have the right facilities? As a gym you could have 4 of the above things correct for a gym but if one was wrong it might not be the right gym for you. I always let people come and try for themselves, if they like it they are welcome to stay. if they also want to come just once a month and train elsewhere in the meantime that’s also fine. My door is always open no matter what. When you are not fighting or training what do you get up to in your free time? When I’m not fighting I’m usually

still training, fighting is my hobby and I just love hitting people sparring haha. But when I’m not in the gym I like to spend time at home with the family watching films and eating loads of s***ty foods like ice cream and cakes. Tell us 3 random facts about yourself? #1. I’m deaf in my right ear and have been since I was 3 #2. I suffer from asthma #3. I had the snip at 26 years old

and I hate typing haha. Thanks for taking the time to chat with us and we look forward to seeing you defend your title later in the year No problemo, thanks for having me. Cheers. B&W Images by Martyn Jones

Where can people follow you or The Manor Gym? I’m not sure if you can follow us for the gym, I never advertise. I get all my custom from word of mouth and it’s always busy. Is there anything you would like to add? Nope, I’ve ran out of things to say

29

Bare Knuckle Boxing is breaking into the mainstream and making waves in the best way possible. Gone are the days of fights in fields or car parks, UBBAD have taken those underground events and over the last few years they have upped their game with every single show, hosting them in various bars and event halls around the UK. The gradual build up has worked with their last show taking place in a packed Sky Dome Arena in Coventry with over 2500 people watching live as well as many more watching online via pay per view. Not only are the venues getting bigger and better, but the level of fighters wanting to compete in BKB is going the same way too, so much so that the past few events

have seen an influx of proven warriors from other combats sports stepping into the ring including kickboxing champions and household names from the UFC. The North East was well represented at BKB 5 at the Sky Dome in Coventry with 2 of the big title fights featuring several top level North East fighters. The World Lightweight title was a rematch between Hartlepool’s Kevin Bennett as he faced the defending BKB World Lightweight Champion, Liam “Bad Intentions” James. As expected, this was a great fight, with Liam battling through injury after suffering several fractures in his hand early in the fight, but you can’t take

anything away from Bennett who went into the fight wanting to avenge his first loss to James. Both fighters went for it from the off and showed a lot of heart with Bennett defeating James to take the title. A lot of fans were hoping for a 3rd deciding fight between these two but both fighters have stepped down from BKB with Bennett retiring and James going back to his first love of MMA as he still has some unfinished business in the sport. The other big fight was for the interim BKB World Heavyweight title. The belt was held by Michael Ferry, who was stripped of the title when he was unable to defend it for a set length of time. So Big John Lewis went toe to toe with Michael Terrill (interviewed this issue). This was the war that everyone expected and it certainly didn’t disappoint. CLICK HERE TO WATCH THE FIGHT.

30

Terrill took the win and is now the BKB World Heavyweight Champion, though he still wants to face Ferry so that there can be no doubt whatsoever who the Champion really is. UBBAD have really made a statement with their next show, as BKB 6 has hit the capital. The 1st of July will see the company holding their next event at the O2 Arena in London, this shows people how far BKB has really

come. The headline fight will see former UFC lightweight contender Melvin Guillard challenging the undefeated BKB World Super Middleweight Champion Jimmy “The Celtic Warrior” Sweeney, you can get your tickets from www.axs.com Follow BKB HERE Images by Brooklyn Freeman

Screen-Con 2017 was ACE…literally. The North East’s favourite film and tv convention returned to The Parks Leisure Centre for what was a scorching bank holiday weekend. This really is a fan favourite event that is ran by fans for fans, unlike other conventions that are purely in it for the money trying to claw as much from the traders and fans as possible. This shows in everything from the build up with loads of freebies and competitions right through to the day of the event with the non-stop entertainment and things to see and do. The first 200 people through the door were given free comics and everyone after that got a free poster which was a nice touch that people really appreciated, it was a great way to start the event.

Screen-Con’s regular host Markus was there taking people through the Jedi Academy, the ScreenCon Super Selfie, Geeky Quiz, Guest talks and more. Though NE very nearly had to stand in when Markus got locked out of his house, we were on standby and set to start the show off, but Markus made it with only a minute or two to spare…thank God for that haha, and as always did a stellar job. The guests this year were as fantastic as always giving a good mix of film and tv. Following on from previous guest Sylvester McCoy, 2017 saw the 7th Doctor’s companion Ace, played by the lovely Sophie Aldred in attendance. This was a real fan boy moment for us having grown up watching Sophie…and having a bit of a

crush on her too haha. Sophie was amazing and really did appreciate her fans as you could tell from the way she was with each and every single one of them. She was also the first up to dance and was front row of the Screen-Con Super Selfie. Sophie is currently recording comedy sci-fi audio adventure STRANGENESS in SPACE with Trev & Simon, CLICK HERE TO FIND OUT MORE. Another guest was the sultry Martine Beswick, best known for her roles in 2 James Bond films, From Russia with Love and Thunderball, as well as numerous Hammer movies and tv shows. Martine was an absolute delight to chat with before the event opened to the

public. Rob Ritchie, the creative force behind the famous lost Doctor Who episode ‘The Power Of The Daleks’ which sees the missing footage replaced by amazing animation. It really was great to hear how a classic episode was brought back to life.

thanks to Al and Vicki for letting us do this, as well as the guests who really were very kind and all happy to help. This was also the 3rd time we have helped judge the Screen-Con Costume Competition, which is always so difficult trying to pick a winner from so

many amazing costumes, so well done to everyone that entered. The winner was a great version of Beatlejuice, with Hanna Solo taking second place and a great Hobbit taking 3rd. NE also teamed up with ARC to

The final guest saw the return of Laurie Goode, who legend has it, was the Stormtrooper who famously banged his head in a little movie called Star Wars, he also played Mos Eisley Cantina creature Saurin and an X-Wing pilot. Any stories about Star Wars will always please the fans and he had plenty, though he almost didn’t make it as his Sat Nav decided to take him all over the North East. NE was there as always getting the charity banners signed, so a big

Straight Outta Compton Tour – O2 Academy Newcastle Featuring DJ YELLA (N.W.A), Lil’ Eazy-E & hosted by PLAYBOY T. Newcastle Upon Tyne, July 15, 2017: Following the huge success of the film ‘Straight Outta Compton’, Relentless Promotions & Academy Events are pleased to announce that ‘DJ Yella’ (of N.W.A) will be heading across the pond for his debut performance on Tyneside. Featuring the son of the legendary rapper ‘Eazy-E’, ‘Lil’ Eazy-E’ will take charge of the vocals and perform all the greatest hits of N.W.A with the best in local Hip-Hop support ‘This Be The

42

Click’ (Smooth Jezza - UBEAT best Hip Hop Act 2016, DUBZ and ADS feat. Rick Fury) and ‘Kay Greyson’. The night will be hosted by ‘Playboy T’ and with ‘meet & greet’ tickets available, this will be a great chance for North East fans to pay homage to the historic music created by the west-coast hip-hop collective. Arguably the pioneers of ‘gangster rap’, ‘N.W.A’ (Niggaz Wit Attitudes) formed in 1986 when Compton DJs ‘Dr Dre’ and ‘DJ Yella’ were approached by childhood friend and ex-gang member ‘Eazy-E’ to form a new label. The aim was to leave behind the funk/

dance based rap that Dre and Yella performed with ‘World Class Wrecking Crew’, and to make more street based rap music similar to likes of ‘Ice-T’ and ‘Public Enemy’, telling their story of life in Compton, L.A. To complete

the group, Dre sought out the talents of local rapper ‘Ice Cube’ who at the time was writing for other artists, and when his song ‘Boyz-N-The-Hood’ was turned down by east-coast group ‘HBO’, Eazy-E stepped up to the mic, put on his trademark shades and completed the track, line by line. Upon release ‘Boyz-N-The-Hood’ became a most requested song on local radio and the group realised they had stumbled on a successful formula, later named ‘Gangster

Rap’, firmly putting LA Hip-Hop on the map. MC REN joined the group soon after and they chose the name that would define a genre, depicting the tails of gang violence, police brutality and life on the streets Compton – ‘N.W.A’. N.W.A went on to have huge commercial success with hits such as ‘Fuck Tha Police’, ‘Express Yourself ’ and ‘Straight Outta Compton’ selling over 3.5 million album sales in the US alone, and their

story depicted by the hugely successful 2015 film ‘Straight Outta Compton’ tells the story of this success, loyalty, deceit, violence and tragedy they experienced along the way. Throughout this DJ Yella was present and with the son of the late Eazy-E (Lil’ Eazy-E), this will be a chanc to hear the music of a generation and to meet one of the pioneers of gangster rap. As it’s very rare for Newcastle to welcome such a major player in the gangster-rap genre, what better chance to offer the support to two artists from the growing NorthEast Hip Hop scene. First up we have ‘Kay Greyson’ who at only 18 years of age has already self-released her album ‘Morning After Music’ cementing her as one of the best lyricists on the Newcastle Hip-Hop scene. With a style influenced by early hip-hop such as N.W.A, Kay has performing all over the city and

has supported the likes of ‘Pharoahe Monche’ which was greatly received. “but to hear her in action you’d believe she’s straight off the streets of Compton” – Martin Sharman, NARC Magazine.

Next up we have hip-hop collective ‘This Be The Click’. Formed by Smooth Jezza (UBEAT Best HipHopArtist 2016), DUBZ, ADS and with beats produced by the very

talented Berwick producer ‘Florist’, their style of music has taken the roots of hip-hop and brought it into the 21st Century. Heavily influenced by artist such as Busta Rhymes, Tupac, Wu-Tang and N.W.A, they will perform songs

Chris Rea Returns to Newcastle City Hall as part of his Road Songs for Lovers Tour 2017 We are delighted to announce that Chris Rea has added two new shows to his European Tour and will be coming to Newcastle City Hall on Mon 20 Nov 2017, to celebrate the release of his new album, Road Songs For Lovers. Like all truly great artists, Chris Rea has followed his own unique artistic vision and a path that is his and his alone. And although his exemplary musical output to date is deeply embedded into the framework of the world’s rock n roll DNA, it is also safe to say that his presence has been something of a glittering thorn in the side of an industry that has always had him down as a perennial outsider. Artist and painter, blues aficionado and selfconfessed motoring nut, filmmaker and Italianinfluenced classical music composer, eclectic and maverick are two terms that hardly come close to describing a man who has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide for just being himself. In 2017 Rea returns to what he’s best known for: an album of gorgeous rock ballads which showcases Rea’s unique voice and a songwriting skill at the top of his game. Born in Middlesbrough in 1951, Rea released his debut album in 1978 and promptly had a huge US hit with the first track to be lifted off the record, Fool If You Think It’s Over. In 1983, Rea’s fifth studio album Water Sign sold over half a million copies after I Can Hear Your Heartbeat became a Top 20 hit all over Europe. Rea’s follow up, Wired To The Moon was also a huge success and attendant tours of Europe would ensure that Rea commandeered a

THE RAILWAY CHILDREN DISEMBARK AT NEWCASTLE THEATRE ROYAL It’s full steam ahead for a brand new adaptation of E. Nesbitt’s classic tale, The Railway Children, calling at Newcastle Theatre Royal this Summer, 26 June – 1 July 2017. All aboard! A faithful interpretation of the much loved children’s tale, this new stage version of The Railway Children tells the story of Roberta, Peter and Phyllis, and how their lives are turned upside down when their father mysteriously disappears with two strangers one evening. Forced to leave the comforts of their privileged London life in exchange for a simple existence in the depths of the Yorkshire countryside, the fractured family soon discover new friendships and an unexpected secret that will change their lives forever. First published as a serial in The London Magazine in 1905 and then as a book in 1906, the novel - a thrilling coming of age story and a fascinating insight into Edwardian rural life – has become a great classic and been adapted for TV and film multiple times. Most notable adaptations include the 1968 TV series which starred Jenny Agutter as Roberta and was placed 96th in the BFI’s 100 greatest British Television Programmes, and the iconic 1970 movie starring Jenny Agutter again and Bernard Cribbins. Complete with beautiful period costumes and ingenious designs,

this new production promises an uplifting theatrical experience for all ages, packed with intrigue, adventure, joy and jubilation. E. Nesbit wrote and collaborated on more than 60 books of children’s literature and as well as The Railway Children is possibly best known for Five Children and It, The Treasure Seekers and The Phoenix and The Carpet. Nesbit is credited for being one of the earliest ‘modern writers’ for children, for her ability to write of real life rather than imaginary worlds and for her extraordinary talent for evoking the English countryside. Adapted by Dave Simpson and designed by Tim Bird, the production is by Exeter Northcott Theatre and Nick Brooke Ltd and is directed by Exeter’s Paul Jepson. The cast includes Stewart Wright (Love and Marriage, Dr Who, The Vicar of Dibley) as Perks, Joy Brook (Peak Practice) as Mother, Millie Turner as Roberta, Andrea

Davy as Mrs Perks, Katherine Carlton as Phyllis, Neil Salvage as the Old Gentleman, Vinay Lad as Peter, Callum Goulden as John, Andrew Joshi as Father/Doctor, Will Richards as Szczepansky and Sally Geake as Ensemble. Paul Jepson said “I’m delighted to be bringing The Railway Children to Exeter and other wonderful venues across the UK with this fantastic cast. The show will be a faithful retelling of the story and will delight audiences up and down the country.” The Railway Children is at Newcastle Theatre Royal from Mon 26 June until Sat 1 July 2017, playing evenings at 7pm, matinees on Wed 2pm and Sat 3.30pm. Tickets from £14.50. Tickets can be purchased from the Theatre Royal Box Office on 08448 11 21 21 (Calls cost 7ppm plus your phone company’s access charge) or book online at www.theatreroyal.co.uk

When you think of Bare Knuckle Boxing I’m sure most people will think of travellers fighting in car parks or some of the call out videos, both of which you often see popping up on youtube and facebook. What people don’t realise is that over the last few years a company called UBBAD have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to bring BKB out of the shadows and into the mainstream.

fight defeating Cowboys Michael who was undefeated in 200 BKB fights. There have been a few occasions where Terrill was due to face current UBBAD Champion Michael “The Real Deal” Ferry on other promotions but it has yet to happen, hopefully now that they are both signed to UBBAD there’s nowhere to hide and this eagerly awaited fight won’t be far away. It will be a fan favourite fight when it happens seeing as Ferry’s fans think there is no competition left for him to face, whilst Terril’s fans think Ferry is ducking Terril because he knows that he will lose his title and has been avoiding the hard fights to keep it. With this kind of talk there can only be one outcome and that is for the fight to take place, which will be great news for neutral BKB fans.

They already have some top level fighters on their books, but in recent months they really have pulled out all of the stops with signings like North East fighter Michael Terrill, who is a Champion Kickboxer and who this year won his first ever Bare Knuckle

Another of the big name signing is former UFC fighter Melvin Guillard who is a well-known striker and a massive household name to be added to the UBBAD roster. He will be taking on the winner of the upcoming Jimmy Sweeney and Dann Henry-Welsh fight. Sweeney

For one night only on September 13th 2017, over 2,000 cinemas worldwide will be showing David Gilmour Live At Pompeii. On July 7th & 8th 2016, David Gilmour performed two spectacular shows at the legendary Pompeii Amphitheatre in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, 45 years after he first played there for Adrian Maben’s classic film Pink Floyd Live At Pompeii. The concerts were the firstever rock performances played to an audience in the ancient Roman amphitheatre, which

was built in 90 BC and entombed in ash when Vesuvius erupted in AD 79. David Gilmour is the only performer to play to an audience in the arena since the time of the gladiators, almost 2,000 years ago. Speaking about the Pompeii shows David commented, ‘It’s a magical place and coming back and seeing the stage and the arena was quite overwhelming. It’s a place of ghosts...’. As well as including songs from throughout David’s solo career, including the title tracks of his two most recent No. 1 solo albums, Rattle That Lock and On An Island, the show will include other solo and Pink Floyd classics such as Wish You Were Here, Comfortably Numb, and One Of These Days, the only song that was also performed by the band in 1971. Both concerts also saw very

special performances of The Great Gig In The Sky from The Dark Side Of The Moon, which David rarely plays as a solo artist. The concert is a spectacular audio-visual experience, featuring the famous huge circular cyclorama screen as well as lasers, pyrotechnics and stellar performances from an all-star band. David Gilmour Live At Pompeii shows an artist at a creative peak, in a unique setting, on a very special occasion and is not to be missed on the big screen.

DUSTBOWL JUKEBOX IS THE DEBUT OFFERING FOR NORTHERN COUNTRY QUEEN Multi-Award nominee and Tyneside-based Country artist, Chloe Chadwick, finally releases her debut album, entitled Dustbowl Jukebox, at the end of June. Several years in the making, the album, which has been compiled around her 2015, self-titled EP, is a ten track ode to the differing styles of Country-Americana music, a genre to which Chloe is whole-heartedly making her name. It is certainly a culmination of an already lengthy period within the music industry, a spell which has seen her play at her home SummerTyne Amerciana Festival and the internationally acclaimed Country 2 Country at the O2 Arena as well as gigging everywhere from the French Alps to Liverpool’s famed Cavern Club while also supporting the like of The Beautiful South and Lady Antebellum (Need You Now), The Stranglers and The Christians and Emmylou Harris

to name but a few. Already bearing the tag of ‘Northern Country Queen’ by the Newcastle Chronicle, professional reviews have included Ruth Lawson from NCJ Media saying: “Get ready to have your preconceptions of country music torn to pieces,” The Count from Way Out Radio added: “I have to admit that I am absolutely spellbound. Chloe has

a supreme talent that just oozes from every note she sings. “Love Will Find A Way is just magical.” Keith Greentree from BBC ‘Rodeo’ Norfolk concluded: “What a voice that lady’s got....a great album,” and HEM Country were blown away stating: “It’s official! This is one of our favourite tracks of the year. Well done Chloe Chadwick, Love Will Find A Way is a top track. “In short, we think its UK Country music at its best.” Chloe, originally from the Potteries, is as well-travelled as they come, even recording one of her tracks from her debut album, Big River, whilst stateside in Los Angeles with internationally-renowned music producer, Chris Groves (Leona Lewis, Dido, Santana), adding further credibility to her bulging profile. The album as a whole was recorded on Tyneside, at Cluny Studios, where Chloe, alongside a backing band of Mark Bushell (guitar), Scott Riby (drums & percussion), Nick Bayes (bass) and James Clarke (keys), flipped

81

the proverbial coin to take a chance in releasing her debut offering. Consisting of ten tracks, including two from her EP in Don’t Be Shy and Never Change as well as her new single, Love Will Find A Way, and personal favourites of Big River and Plain Old Jane, Chloe said of the release: “Although there may be the tendency to celebrate this album as a British take on Southern Americana there’s certainly more to this eclectic assortment than simply songs of the sunbelt.

82

“I’ve had a long-standing commitment to this project and it’s a labour of love that is more than twenty years on the making. “The feeling is though that I’ve delivered on my pledge to write the most authentic and personal account of an everyman’s journey through the trials and tribulations of everyday life.” Originally, two years ago, the EP was a testing of the waters, unsure how she would take to the country scene, and how she’d be received. The four track

exquisiteness though reassured her as Feels Like Home, Settle Your Heart, Don’t Be Shy and Never Change fast became firm favourites at live shows, something which Plain Old Jane is for Chloe. Earlier this year she was seen providing support acts for Grammy award nominee, Jeff Finlin, at Porters in Tynemouth as part of his European tour, and with Celia Bryce at the Lowlights Heritage Centre in North Shields. With the calibre of supports she’s garnered in recent times, her album launch aside should see Chloe headline more, and grander occasions in the near future. “It’s been a really good experience for me playing the local scene either as a soloist, or with my backing band recently,” continued Chloe. “Supporting people like Jeff Finlin is amazing and opportunities like that are great as I can expand into new audiences; it’s the same when I supported Celia Bryce as they’re more mature audiences and I received a fantastic reception. “Acts like this coming to the region are helping the country scene get bigger every year as

well, not just here in the northeast but nationally. “In my eyes it’s great that we’re getting more American acts coming over here the past few years, whether it’s your big names or your up-and-coming star. “We’ve got the amazing SummerTyne Festival (Sage Gateshead, July) and Nashville ByThe-Sea (Saltburn, September) which are doing wonders at the same time and adds fantastic scope for us all.” Not your generic, CountryAmericana style, Chloe aiming to place her own stamp on the genre. And, with a name like Dustbowl Jukebox, it’s hoped that the ten-track will be a welcome masterpiece to anybody’s musical collection. Jokingly stating that the naming of the album was her idea, it was her guitarist, Mark Bushell, who delivered the lightbulb moment, the name certainly a befitting one and portrays her style and prowess to perfection. “Mark (Bushell), my guitarist who’s been with me all through this, came up with the name and, although I’d like to take the credit, it’s all him,” she added with a smile. “Dustbowl highlights the whirlwind of a music career to which I’ve experienced, especially getting to the album release whilst Jukebox is just that, music for everyone – pop,

rock, country, blues, soul, so we just figured that it went together quite well. “Two of the tracks on the album were on the EP whilst the first one has just been released as a single. “My personal favourites though are Big River and Plain Old Jane. “The former is a classy ballad which relates to previous experiences and living life to the full; it was actually recorded

over in LA and came out how I envisioned it, it really couldn’t have been recorded any better. “The latter is your perfect, happygo-lucky track that people won’t skip past, it’s also a favourite of mine to play live.” The Northern Country Queen, Chloe Chadwick, finally releases her debut album, Dustbowl Jukebox, on June 30 with a special album launch. The event, brought to you by Northern Soundz Promotions, sees support from Freeman and McDade and will take place at Think Tank, Newcastle. Doors open at 7pm, entry is £7, and the album is costs a cool tenner – tickets are available to purchase now via www.wegottickets.com.
