Hi Chris and welcome to NE Magazine, for the few readers who must be living in a cave somewhere and don’t know who you are how about giving th em a quick l ow- down o n yourself? - Hello! Can’t help but think I’m writing your interview introduction for you here, oh well… I’m a stand-up comedian from South Shields and I’m also a bit of an actor now and then… but mainly a comedian… that might not come across as well as it should in print form, but I am. So there. At the moment it’s hard not seeing you on the TV when we switch it on as you’re everywhere, but what has been the highlight for you so far? - Not everywhere though am I? If you turn on QVC and I’m selling a frying pan, just assume you’ll find me floating face down in a river very soon. The highlight for me so far was probably being in Hebburn. Since starting comedy I always wanted to try my hand at being in a sitcom too so I was over the moon to do one with my mate and so close to my heart, and I got to work with Vic Reeves. I know you had a bit of a crazy time with fans wanting pics and autographs when you were having a few drinks in a South Shields bar recently, how are you finding this, does it put you off going out? - Not at all. Any person in that position who has been on TV or whatever and people want photos (I’m trying my best not to say celebrity here!) who pretends they hate the attention is a liar. You don’t go for a career on TV because you don’t want anyone to notice you. As long as I’m not eating or having a shit when you want a photo then it’s no problem at all… I meant, like on the toilet, not just in the middle of the dancefloor.

2

Have you had any weird fan requests or incidents? - Not really. The odd person will show up to a gig with my face on a T-Shirt, or bake me a cake, or send me a dead animal in the post but other than that it’s just photos and autographs. A little kid in Hebburn when we were filming asked me to sign his micro scooter… that was a bit weird. As well as being a bit of a regular on Celebrity Juice, Never Mind the Buzzcocks and 8 out of 10 Cats you are now starring in the North East based sitcom Hebburn, how did that come about? - My mate and fellow comedian Jason Cook decided to write a sitcom about the town he was from, Hebburn, and he actually wrote me a little side part which he named after me. But when it came to being made the BBC asked me to read for the main character, and when I got it, Jason took the part that he’d written for me! It came about so gradually that I didn’t really realise the enormity of being lead role in a BBC2 sitcom until I saw the advert on TV. I nearly passed out. How has the response for Hebburn been so far? - Overwhelmingly positive. And we just won Best Drama at the RTS North awards too. And we’ve got a second series! You are now embarking on your biggest tour to date, how do you feel about this? - Yeah incredible! It’s an extension of my last tour, Feeling Lucky. I did 60+ dates in 2012 but the demand for tickets was so high and people enjoyed the show so much that I’m doing another 40 odd dates this year in much bigger venues. I can’t wait to get back out on the road.

Are there any venues on the tour that you are looking forward to playing or any you’re quite nervous about? - The Theatre Royal in Newcastle. I absolutely can’t wait. I used to watch panto there when I was a kid. I’m

Hi Colin, welcome to NE, can you

6

Hi David, thanks for taking the time to chat with us, can you introduce yourself to our readers? I’m David McGovern and I am the owner of Newcastle’s newest Vinyl Record shop/Coffee Shop/ Hangout. I’m from Newcastle and have worked for a number of Record shops in the north east since 1996. You are the man behind Beyond Vinyl, which is more than just a record store, can you tell us more about it? I’ve always wanted to open my own record shop but I didn’t want to be like every other. I wanted to open somewhere that people enjoy coming to, more of a social space where people chat and talk to each other about music and somewhere for local artists to try out material if front of an audience.

not taking a chance. If we all did that then nothing would happen. The high street is tough at the moment with shop after shop closing but there is still a place on the high street for independent retailers and having a coffee shop within the shop helps get people in who wouldn’t normally visit a record shop. Vinyl has seen a massive comeback in the last few years, why do you think that is?

Everyone has a different view on this. Mine is that over the last 30 years we have been blinded by new formats like the CD and MP3/ MP4 and the convenience of the MP3 player. The game changer was when phones became the device you played you music on and that you could sync it with say I tunes and change your play list everyday with ease. But with a CD and a download you don’t get the same joy as when you pick up a record and put it

Opening a record store could be seen as a bit of a gamble as its only recently that vinyl has made a comeback, so what made you want to open a record store? I’ve always wanted to open my own record shop and Newcastle was in need of something different. It is a gamble but you don’t succeed by sitting back and

7

on your turntable sit down and admire the art work and read the notes in the sleeve. There is an element of nostalgia but also it about owning something and the joy of showing your mate the record you’ve just bought. With Vinyl you are forced to make time and listen to the whole album and invest your time in it and the rewards are you relax and actually really listen to the record and it’s not just on in the back ground. Making time to relax and enjoy something is far and few between these days so it’s a perfect excuse to do this. Since opening you have started making some changes including a crowd funding campaign, can you tell us more about your plans for Beyond? The plan with Beyond Vinyl has always been from the start to open a shop that is more than just a shop. We want to be a hangout/meeting place for people, somewhere they can come meet friends and listen to music in a more relaxed atmosphere. So the coffee shop and the hangout in the basement is the heart of this. Giving people a space to play intimate gigs, chat with friends and hangout.

You can include Game Of Thrones star Ben Crompton as one of your customers and he got involved with your crowd funding campaign, how did that all come about? I’ve known Ben for many years now and he is a massive vinyl

8

collector, but the type that buys them to play and enjoy. So when I told him that I was opening my own shop he was really pleased for me and offered to help with anything he could. So when we did the crowdfunding video he was more than happy to help. Do you have any other famous customers? We have had a few come across from the 02 Academy for a look around and a coffee and some who are just visiting the city. I was hoping John Carpenter would have popped in the other week when he was playing the Tyne Theatre as it’s only a minute from our shop but he didn’t. Legend says he only ever comes

out at night…… So that would explain his no show. You have recently branched out selling more than just vinyl, was that always the plan or just the way the business is going? Yes the plan has always been to be “Beyond” a Vinyl shop. We always planned to do more than just Vinyl. We wanted to be a vinyl shop/coffee shop but not in the way other vinyl cafés are. We still wanted to be a big focus on the music shop side. A lot of vinyl cafés tend to be mainly a café with a few records, that where we differ. We are a music shop with a café and a café with a music shop. And we are hoping to open the basement in the new

year as a hangout/performance space with music and comedy nights focusing on local artists/ performers. When you are not working in Beyond what do you like to do with your spare time? At the minute that is my life. But if I do get any spare time I put a vinyl on, go to gig’s, meet up with friends and watch films.

Tell us 3 random facts about yourself? I used to be in a rap group in the early 90’s. I met and spent the day with Ice T in 1994 when he played the Mayfair with his band Bodycount. I have always wanted to be an actor but always been too shy to take it any further. Where can people follow Beyond and keep up to date with news and offers? Facebook: @beyondvinyl

She’s all about a Boy

reported in the last issue.

What a year it has been for local star, Beth Macari.

Is it the opposite of Clone, well with Beth anything can be so it’s more down to individual interpretation rather than actualities and, as she says: “Simply put, ‘BOY’ is a love song…

The NE Online Magazine Artist of the Year has not only performed a number of the regions esteemed venues and festivals but she’s also been travelling across the country promoting her new music. Not one, but two new singles have hit the airwaves both in the UK and USA as the immense Clone, was fast followed up with her latest offering, Boy, both of which garnered the attention of a certain Gaby Roslin, as was

14

“I wanted it to be the perfect blend of pop and dance in the hope to disguise the soppy lyrics behind it; I was clearly super smitten when I wrote it,” well someone is lucky there then, Macari wooing audiences all year long and will continue to do so over the festive season.

If the new single was written AFTER Clone gained the traction which it did, one could say that Beth’s latest offering of her being “super smitten,” could be aimed at Ms. Roslin, both tracks going out BBC Radio Two. Boy making Macari even more ecstatic with the coverage: “It did indeed and Gaby Roslin has been amazing,” she continued. “Her support has seen me get BBC Radio 2 play for both my singles and she also made ‘Clone’ the BBC London track of the week. “She is a truly lush woman!”

The success in which the two tracks from Miss Macari has had only adds to the how big a year 2018 has been for her, and how much people can expect from the stunning musician in 2019, after the upcoming festive season that is. “To be honest this year has been awesome,” admits Beth. “Hearing myself on national radio was a little crazy, but more than anything it’s been nonstop. “I am my own manager, with the help of my drummer/best mate Phil, so for us its consisted of travelling to London and other cities and we’re usually driving there and back in one day, trying to spread the word on my new music. “We are at our laptops every day; plugging away and researching, so it’s been busy and I have no doubt it will continue to be that way, but I love it. “Being on stage, singing to new people, is literally the best feeling in the world for me and we have some awesome gig announcements to share very soon for next year. “We definitely plan to tour, and release lots of new music so hopefully it will be a repeat of this year but much bigger.” Not only performing her own music, but attending gigs is a must for Miss Macari and she’s been seen in the audience of a

good few herself throughout 2016, including a few favourites. “Seeing Jessie Ware at the 02 Academy in Newcastle (back in March) has definitely been my favourite gig and I am a huge fan of her voice. “Her support act, Kia Victoria, was amazing also, I love discovering new music.” Before we get into 2019, and whatever wonderfulness Miss Macari has to offer, there’s the small matter of ‘The Most Wonderful Time of the Year,’ Christmas is Coming and with someone as elegant as Beth, wonderful, songs, and festivities will suit her down to the ground.

“Song-writing like crazy is my plan for Christmas,” we’d expect no less there Beth, “I would usually be gigging lots of Crimbo but as we have been so busy recently, we want to use the festive season to work on my album,” well that’s what we all would like to hear, a forthcoming album… “And, other than that, I will be drinking baileys and enjoying family time.” Won’t we all, well, enjoying Christmas time that is….. Beth Macari’s ‘Boy’ was released in late November and is available from all the usual outlets....

So, is she prepared to give a little insight into how she’ll close 2018 and dance away her own festivities?

SAGE GATESHEAD TO HOST A FESTIVE TWISTER PARTY Northern rockers, Twister, are capping off their 2018 in style with the second of two, high profile outings, they’ll land at Sage Gateshead on December 29. Fronted by Stevie Stoker the quartet, who’ve supported numerous big names in recent years, returned to Stockton’s Georgian Theatre last month to release the single, Trading Hearts, the last from their State of Mind Collection. Twelve months prior the pop rockers were at the same venue for the release of 64 White Lies, the place becoming rather popular for Stoker and his fellow band-mates Joe Major, Ryan Lee and Jake Grimes and now it’s on to a maiden outing at the regions’ premier

music venue – Sage Gateshead. Overlooking the Tyne, Sage Gateshead is a multi-purpose music venue and educational establishment not only locally, but of na-

tional and international standards over the past fourteen years. Now playing host to numerous musical genres including rock, pop, classical, jazz, indie, acoustic

and country, Twister will become the latest in a long line of musicians to perform at the iconic venue. “We’ve been flat out this year, really busy not only with UK shows and festivals but across Europe as well,” began Stevie.

“Releasing Trading Hearts was the last single from the State of Mind Collection before we look at, and begin releasing, new music. “It’s now close to two years since the album was released and, although the traction from it has been really good, it’s time for the next chapter in the Twister story.” Consisting of the EP’s Refined and Designed, the Combined State of Mind Collection has travelled far and wide since its O2 Academy release and, with Trading Hearts ushering in a new era, it’ll be

LOVE A LITTLE LAUGHTER LOGAAAAAAAA As far as inspirations go, County Durham’s Manchester-born, mother-of-two, Noreen Gormally, hasn’t gone far wrong with hers, plumping for United Mind’s Lotte Mikkelsen. Do you want to know more, then read on… In fact, the recently qualified Laughter Yoga instructor, Noreen, is now putting everyone she cares to know, on absolute stitches. Even a few journalists are getting tongue-tied over it all. You know you want to know more now, so pour a cuppa, sit back, and relax – then book a place, and have a giggle with a Gormally Great. Qualifying as a Stroden (Reiki First Degree) back in May this year, the level of Ursui Reiki being attained, Noreen fast put her business mind to good use (she

26

already owns the delightful Abigail’s Treasure) and set up WAVES Laughter Yoga North East, now WAVES Holistics North East. Within this spectrum she is incorporating her inner peace with some outward-bound laughter, if

you don’t believe that, then check out her videos, you’ll soon understand. A lover of music and the arts, this rock chic chick has a son Lucas who is rock guitarist, and a young daughter, Abi who is, as you may

guess, the apple of Abigail’s Treasure. Now, in running her weekly workshops, she’s aiming for much more, Noreen, who has lovingly hijacked the TCR Hub over Barney way (Barnard Castle for nonDurhamites), stated prior to her first set of workshops that: “We lead such busy lives which can make us feel stressed at the best of times. “Worrying about things can get us a bit down so, if you’re in need of a boost and want to get your happy back, well this could be the workshop for you. “My weekly workshops will have sprinkles of mindfulness, laughter, yoga and meditation to lift your mood, create calmness, and get that balance back into your life.” It was to be the start of something special, something unique, something different, her own way of bringing something calm and fun, different, but strangely normal back into people’s lives.

Why this then, because I for one was certainly intrigued? And what does WAVES stand for? Well, WAVES is an acronym for (W)ellbeing, (A)waken, (V)ision, (E)nergy, and (S)oul, Noreen adding: “WAVES Holisitics has the different complimentary therapies that are available to choose from to help people in the different

ways that’s right for them. “By clearing the mind, through meditation and mindfulness for a clearer vision. “It raises your energy through laughter and to do what makes your soul happy.” Through all the implementations of inspiration, the mindset and guidelines Noreen follows that are presented in Lotte’s work, Laughter Yoga, from underneath that Holistics umbrella, or WAVES, will continue to go from strengthto-strength and it’s already putting smiles on the faces of many in the County Durham area. It is because of that, this Mancunian-Durhamite rock chick, who’s long since set up home in the north-east, is looking ahead, further ahead, and aiming for the delights of what 2019 may have to offer. “I’ve got more planning needed for the New Year,” she concluded.

27

“I’ll be looking for at least three clubs a week going on as well as a couple of corporate events a month (to aid in the workplace).” With other plans also in the pipeline for next year, Noreen, and WAVES, could well be enjoying much Laughter Logaaaaaa as the months, and the years, progress. Sessions and workshops, with WAVES Holistics can be viewed via her Facebook and bookings, via email laughteryogawaves@yahoo.com payments to be made either at individual sessions, or via her PayPal paypal.me/laughteryogawaves MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!! https://www.facebook.com/wavesholisticsnortheastuk/ https://www.facebook.com/abigailstreasure/

Hi Emily and welcome to NE, can you introduce yourself to our readers? Hey, my name is Emily. I live on the coast of the North East of England, I am the youngest of three and I run EMX Custom pops. You are the talent behind EMX POPS, tell us more about that? As someone who never knew what they wanted to be through school and college, EMX Custom pops is something I’m extremely proud of. I never imagined that it would become as popular as it is, and I find it’s a way to express who I am and what I like while also helping others bring their ideas to life. It’s

36

something I’ve grown, adapted and worked on from nothing to what it is today. What made you want to get into customising Pop figures? I began by customizing pops for myself. As a huge fan of the game series, I started with Spyro (A simple paint over which didn’t involve much clay work). Then I moved onto Dr horrible and Captain Hammer, but things didn’t really kick off with EMX until I made the Markiplier pop. This was another pop that I made for myself and it was a creation I was very proud of, so I published it on Social Media. In the next few

hours the post had exploded, and I had many people messaging me to ask if I sold them. Then next day, I decided to make one to sell. The person who bought the Markiplier pop asked if I could make them a second. In what would turn out to be my very first commission. A Jacksepticeye. From there, I made a Facebook page to post my creations on and decided to take a leap to book my first convention and the business grew from there. So, if someone wants a Custom Pop what are the limitations of making one? With everything there are always limitations but I’m always willing to take on a challenge. I think it’s

the best way to learn and improve techniques. Over my time running EMX Custom pops, I have learned so much and what I may have

struggled with at the beginning, is now something I find very easy to do. And what is the process of a customised pop from start to finish? I find the process is personal to each customer and it’s very involving. This is because each customer has an image in their head of how they want their custom pop to look and it’s very important to me that that’s what the finish product looks like. So, I send a lot of photos at each stage (Clothing, hairstyle, painting and box) to make sure the customer is happy. From there, I can make any adaptations needed. If you are doing a Pop figure from

37

scratch what kind of time frame would you be looking at to complete one? I take pops in weekly commissions and the process takes the full week to create. That breaks down into these stages: Stage 1 (Day 1): Clothing- this is the earliest stage of the custom.

38

Stage 2 (Day 2). Hairstyle- this is where the pop starts to gain a little bit of its character

Stage 3 (Day 3-4). Painting - This is where the pop really comes to life.

Stage 4 (Day 5). Box Design- This is the final touches of the pop before shipping.

What has it been like setting up EMX POPS, what kind of obstacles have you faced? EMX Custom pops started as a side business to my education. At the beginning I was still working out what I wanted this business to be. Balancing work and free time were my main issues at the beginning. Currently, I find the main obstacle I face is growing and expanding the business further. I am the only creator at EMX and due to the high amount of detail in each piece, there is a limit to how much I can create a week. In fact, I find it very difficult to turn away new and exciting commissions because I simply don’t have any slots left to make them. However, that quality is not something I am willing to compromise on as I think it is why my pops are so popular. You are a regular at conventions around the North East, how have you found people’s reactions to your Pops? I have had many compliments at every con I’ve visited and it’s one of my favourite parts of running EMX Custom pops. Not only do I get to showcase my pops but my other art as well. It’s all important to me and I am often

overwhelmed by how nice the comments and encouragements are from those who stop to chat to me. Do you collect them yourself? Of course! It was my initial interest in collecting pops that lead to customizing them. The idea often came to me when I’d collect a series but find some of my favourite characters were missing. For example: Molly Hooper in the Sherlock collection. If so, what kind do you go for, is there a Holy Grail Pop you are looking for? I feel like everyone has a grail pop that they’ve always wanted but is too rare or just isn’t sold anymore. Mine is Bryan Fuller, writer of Hannibal and Pushing Daises. With you appearing at various conventions have you had anyone famous request a Pop figure from you? A few months ago, I had to pleasure of making three pops for Pam Rose who’s most famously known for being in Space 1999 and Star Wars. I got to create two of her character from Star Wars and one of Space 1999. I also got to meet her later at a convention which was lovely.

39

However, I do have to mention one of my favourite photos. I created a pop of Rip Hunter for a customer who was going to have it signed by Arthur Darvill. I was told that he loved it and even took a photo of it on his personal phone. The photo captures this moment and I was very excited the first time I saw this as a fan of his.

teens, I was always making crafty items. Simple items such as sequin art and hamma beads which progressed to more complicated projects such as jewellery and nail designs. These were always projects that I did for fun, but I learned skills such as painting in detail on a small area. That then developed and adapted to help me start EMX Custom pops. When you are not hard at work what do you get up to with your free time? When I’m not working, I love everything geeky. Several TV shows, games and Youtubers. I go to cons where I can do bigger cosplays that don’t fit behind a table. I’ve done escape rooms all over the world and I love travelling.

If you could do anybody real or a character in Pop form who would it be and why? I do a lot of commissions, so I often don’t get much time to make what I want but most pops featured in my Etsy shops are characters that I really love and have always wanted to make into pops. For example: Markiplier, Jacksepticeye, Sapphire, Ruby and several Undertale characters. Moving forward I’d love to make Niko from Oneshot, some Starkid characters and Delta Rune characters. You have to be creative and artistic to do what you do, is that all self-taught or have you done art courses and qualifications? All my current qualifications are academically based, art has always been a passion of mine and therefore everything has been selftaught. As a child and through my

40

Tell us 3 random facts about yourself? I can ride a unicycle. I can’t laugh standing up otherwise I’ll fall over. I have a Grade 4 in Clarinet Where can people follow you and keep up to date with your projects and appearances? I can be followed on

Facebook: www.facebook.com/emxpops Etsy: www.etsy.com/uk/shop/EMXCustomPops I also run a small sticker shop on the side where I sell the artwork of my pops called Mooie Products: www.etsy.com/uk/shop/MooieProducts Is there anything you would like to add? 7 gigs in 7 days was one of two challenges for Danny Goffey in November as he toured for his 2nd album ‘Schtick’, the 2nd challenge was raising money for Movember with the rest of his band. It’s safe to say he smashed both challenges. For those that may not recognise the name, Danny Goffey was the drummer and songwriter for 90s band Supergrass, but like with any band it is always the frontman that everyone remembers.

Schtick is a fantastic follow up to first solo album ‘Take Your Jacket

62

Off & Get into It’, though he goes by the name of Vangoffey for that album. It still has the fun sound you will recognise from early Supergrass songs, making it an easy album to get into from the off. Do yourself a favour and pick up a copy of both albums, you won’t be disappointed.

bar as he had the same idea. He was an absolute gentleman taking the time to chat with us both and pose for photos, it’s great to see he has time for his fans and even knew who we were from our post on his Movember page which was nice.

Monday the 19th of November saw Danney playing his 3rd gig of the tour at The Cluny in Newcastle, a superb venue known for its live music. It was also halfway through the Movember challenge and all of the band were looking good with their collection of taches on show. The Cluny were great in arranging disabled access for me and my daughter, making sure she was looked after and able to enjoy the gig so a big thank you to them for helping with that, not all venues are as helpful when it comes to disabled access and requirements, the staff were brilliant. We popped down for food before the show and ended up bumping into Danny in the

For those that didn’t go to the Cluny gig you really did miss out on a great show, with 2 great up and coming bands in support. First off we had local band Fever

Days playing some catchy indie songs including their debut single ‘What’s Your Problem’ which you can listen to on Spotify HERE! If you get the chance to catch them live go and see them.

The 2nd support were Cardiff based band Junior Bill who are gaining a big reputation all over the UK for their lively gigs and their blend of ska, reggae and punk fused with their own sound and of course their Welsh charm. They played songs from their new album including ‘The Butetown RATS’ and ‘There’s a Wolf in Grangetown’, This is a fun band that enjoy being on stage, tell great stories in their songs and have lots of fun doing it, you can check them out at JuniorBill. co.uk

Then it was time for the main event with Danny Goffey and his band taking to the stage for a very intimate gig that did not disappoint! They played a mix of songs from both albums, as well as a great cover, a new song and even a treat as Danny took to the drums to play Supergrass hit ‘Pumping On The Stereo’. Danny

chatted and joked with the crowd including telling everyone all about their Movember challenge and why some of the band looked more dodgy than others, with guitarist Louis Eliot looking a lot like Tom Savini’s character Sex Machine from the Tarintino film ‘From Dusk Till Dawn’. You can still sponsor the guys HERE. As a live act Danny Goffey and his band were brilliant, musically they were tight and the songs were all catchy and sounded just a good live as they do on the album. The band were enjoying playing them for their fans, even if they were still a bit worse for wear from the previous night’s gigs and their antics afterwards haha. Danny has gone under the radar compared to Supergrass frontman Gaz Coombes but if you are a fan of the early, fun, Supergrass sound then you really need to check out both albums

‘Schtick’ and ‘Take Your Jacket Off & Get into It’. I really hope it won’t be too long a wait for the 3rd album and tour because we wouldn’t miss it! Vashti Bunyan Being a commercial DJ for nearly 20 years I would say my music knowledge was pretty good, but a few years ago my daughter Lainie (then 14 years old) asked me if I had any Vashti Bunyan…and my reply is probably the same as yours right now…”Who?” Well Vashti Bunyan is a singer/ songwriter who actually comes from Newcastle, but moved to

London when she was just 6 months old. In the mid-’60s she was discovered by The Rolling Stones’ guru, Andrew Loog Oldham and was signed to Decca where she recorded a single written by Jagger/Richards. But things didn’t really pan out the way people expected and so she upped and moved to Scotland. Then in 1969, inspired by where her life had taken her, she wrote, reordered and then in 1970 released the album ‘Just Another Diamond Day’. But rather than promoting it she disappeared back up to Scotland. But like many classics, over the years it grew and became something of a cult classic with Vashti realising in the 1990’s that her music was popular even after all these years. After looking into it she decided to tack down the masters and get the rights to her music and

68

re-released her album again, this time it took off, The Observer Music Monthly even placed it at 53 in their ‘Top 100 British albums’ and so Vashti Bunyan started to gain the popularity that she should have had back in the 60’s as now she was being discovered by newer fans of all ages. This resurgence led to her signing with Fat Cat Records with more

new music being released and the odd tour which started to cement her place in the music world with the crown of the Queen of Folk music, a well-deserved title that you will understand once you have listened to her lyrics and haunting voice. Fast forward to a cold Saturday afternoon early in 2017 and my daughter Lainie asking me about Vashti. She had discovered her whilst looking for new music to listen to. This time it was my daughter educating me! So we googled her, read more about her, listened to her music and chatted about her. It turns out I had a song by Vashti Bunyan on a record I bought when I was only a few years older than Lainie, an album from the 60’s called “Tonite Lets All Make Love in London” which I bought because it featured a couple of tracks from Pink Floyd. It also featured “Winter Is Blue” by Vashti (as she only went by Vashti back then). Lainie collected her albums on vinyl and we looked into her more to see if she ever toured, but it didn’t look likely, she hadn’t toured or released anything in years, we couldn’t find any updates for her so Lainie come to terms with the fact she would never get to see Vashti perform live. Fast forward again to late 2018, Lainie has been learning to play

guitar, piano, ukulele and any other instrument she can get her hands on, she has learnt to play songs by her favourite artists including Pink Floyd, The Beatles and even Vashti Bunyan. We’ve been to gigs all over the UK rather than having a holiday and have been lucky enough to see some of our heroes including Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason and Roger waters. We were at one of our final gigs of the year at the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds to see an up and coming band called Snail Mail (another one I had never heard of but Lainie had become a big fan). At the gig we were looking at the posters for people playing the venue in the coming months and what do we spot…a tour poster

for Vashti Bunyan. We both look at each other in shock and I know what I have to do. So the next day I’m straight on the phone to book tickets (even though the gig is on a school night and her mam will not approve, there was no way we could miss this chance). Lainie had had a tough few months with her Arthritis and it was looking doubtful if she would be well enough to attend the gig, but she was determined, she misses out on loads of things because of her condition but there was no way she was missing this. I had been lucky enough to speak to Vashti thanks to the help of Dave from FatCat Records, asking if there was any way Lainie could

69

meet Vashti as she misses out on meet and greets at a lot of gigs with her being unable to stand for long periods of time. Dave and Vashti were both incredible, they really went out of their way to accommodate Lainie and make her dreams come true. Vashti is one of the most kind and generous people I have had the pleasure of dealing with, not only did she agree to meeting Lainie, she made sure Lainie was front row for the show. For that I honestly can’t thank her enough. Come the night of the gig we travelled down to the Brudenell Social Club nice and early to make sure we didn’t miss anything. True to her word we had seats reserved in the front row, which was a surprise to Lainie as I never told her about that. The support act came in the form of the talented due Jim Ghedi and Toby Hay who played acoustic guitar like 2 men possessed. They were incredible to watch, no singing, just pure music that kept the crowd in a trance for their whole set. They were very funny and witty telling stories in-between songs. These guys are super talented and are now on our playlist. They were really friendly and chatted to us during the break, even signing their The Hawksworth Grove Sessions album that Lainie bought. Give them a listen folks and if you get the chance to see them play

70

I strongly recommend you do. Check them out here! Then came the main event, the reason why the Brudenell Social Club was sold out on a miserable Monday night. The crowd was such a mix of ages which was a surprise to me, Lainie was the youngest person there (now 15 years old) but not by as big a gap as I expected. Vashti came onto the stage with Gareth Dickson in tow, a great musician and singer in his own right. Considering Vashti is 70, she certainly doesn’t look it, she looks amazing and her voice is still as haunting as ever. From the very first song she had the whole crowd under her spell. As an artist it was great to hear her being so honest about her songs, telling the crowd the story behind the songs, it’s very rare to hear someone being so open and honest about such personal things but it really did make you appreciate each song even more. She sang beautifully, her voice hypnotic and haunting

at the same time, she really does keep you listening to every word, eager for more with every single song. Gareth was brilliant playing alongside her, their vocals mixing perfectly. When she finished her encore you could feel the atmosphere in the room, everyone there knew they had witnessed something magical. I know Lainie was mesmerised throughout the whole show, eager to go home and play more Vashti songs as she said that watching her play had helped her to figure out how to play the songs better, she was really inspired by

her even more by seeing her live. Vashti is exactly the same on stage as she is off, such an honest and genuine person, so friendly and appreciative talking with her fans, you can tell that she appreciates them all and doesn’t take them for granted like some acts do these days, a lot of big names could learn a thing or two from people like Vashti. She went into the side bar to spend time with her fans, chatting with them and happy to sign autographs and pose for photos. You could see her fans were over the moon that she did this, the fact she was laughing and chatting happily with them all, not trying to rush anyone, it really was amazing to see. We waited patiently for the queue to die down before going in to see her. She recognised Lainie straight away and came over to greet her, Lainie was slightly star struck but Vashti put her at ease chatting with her about music and asking what Lainie played, asking if she enjoyed the show and how she was feeling, knowing she hadn’t been well but was so excited to meet her. Vashti really was so lovely, she signed all of Lainies albums with a big smile on her face whilst she did so, she posed for pictures and really did go above and beyond,

something I will never forget as she really didn’t have to. On our way out we spoke to Gareth, who was standing at the bar with a well-deserved drink, and thanked him for an amazing night. Lainie asked if he had a website so she could follow him too, as she really enjoyed what she had heard, he then went into his bag and got out a cd which he then signed and gave to Lainie, again going above and beyond. We left the show on a total high, after being looked after by both the venue and all of the artists, it is safe to say both the support act (Jim Ghedi and Toby Hay) and Gareth Dickson have now got new fans after that show and Vashti really has cemented her status as the Queen of Folk Music.

love lavender, whether it’s the little sachets to put in wardrobes to keep your homes smelling fresh or lavender scented candles… candles! Who we are. Hello everyone, we are Chris and Laura and together we are the founders of Lumière Candles. We’re both local Sanddancers, a little bit crazy, but in a good way, and we adore candles!

That was the turning point right there. We both love candles, I mean, who doesn’t in truth? It was something we could do together, and it was something we would enjoy. And that is where it began. After many many hours of testing, choosing scents, and perfecting we finally launched on Friday 9th November. What we offer.

Where it all began. That’s a bit of a story actually in truth. It all stems from the garden in our new home. Since moving in a couple of years ago we, and I say we in the loosest terms possible as Laura is not an outdoors person at all, we have been doing more and more in the garden. It started with a few flowers but then progressed to growing our own vegetables, and getting a composter for vegetable trimmings, grass cuttings etc.

of plants that not only looked good but also attracted bees to help them out. One plant in particular which bees love is lavender which looks and smells amazing.

We started off with two tiny lavender plants that we got from a local shop but with the Summer we’ve had they grew into huge plants that needed trimming down. So, we had stacks, and I mean stacks, of lavender which we didn’t want to go to waste. ‘What can we do with this?’ we thought. Making it into We started doing research gifts for Christmas seemed into a number of things, like a good idea as people

We currently offer our range of scents in 20cl glass containers and 25cl tin containers. There will be more sizes added in the future, but we want to get everything just right with the basics first before expanding. As for the range of scents on offer, at present there are five sensual scents; Christmas Spice – which as Laura put it when walking into the room for the first time “…it smells just like Christmas Day.”; French Lavender – come on, we couldn’t not; Hot Apple Pie; Sandalwood Vanilla; and Winter Pine. For our tin containers we also offer a personalisation label service for the lids. We have a range of designs currently available to customise to add names or special messages

to loved ones. Whether you want to say happy birthday, merry Christmas or just a simple thank you we are more than happy to help. As well as looking at different sized containers we also plan on adding Reed Diffusers, Melts, and different types of wax – currently we only stock paraffin-based wax but will be looking at locally sourced beeswax in the not so distant future.

When you think of Bare Knuckle Boxing I’m sure most people will think of travellers fighting in car parks or some of the call out videos, both of which you often see popping up on youtube and facebook. What people don’t realise is that over the last few years a company called UBBAD have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to bring BKB out of the shadows and into the mainstream.

fight defeating Cowboys Michael who was undefeated in 200 BKB fights. There have been a few occasions where Terrill was due to face current UBBAD Champion Michael “The Real Deal” Ferry on other promotions but it has yet to happen, hopefully now that they are both signed to UBBAD there’s nowhere to hide and this eagerly awaited fight won’t be far away. It will be a fan favourite fight when it happens seeing as Ferry’s fans think there is no competition left for him to face, whilst Terril’s fans think Ferry is ducking Terril because he knows that he will lose his title and has been avoiding the hard fights to keep it. With this kind of talk there can only be one outcome and that is for the fight to take place, which will be great news for neutral BKB fans.

They already have some top level fighters on their books, but in recent months they really have pulled out all of the stops with signings like North East fighter Michael Terrill, who is a Champion Kickboxer and who this year won his first ever Bare Knuckle

Another of the big name signing is former UFC fighter Melvin Guillard who is a well-known striker and a massive household name to be added to the UBBAD roster. He will be taking on the winner of the upcoming Jimmy Sweeney and Dann Henry-Welsh fight. Sweeney

ROMESH RANGANATHAN COMES TO THE CITY HALL FRIDAY 8 NOVEMBER 2019 WITH A BRAND NEW SHOW TICKETS ON SALE 10AM FRIDAY 28 SEPTEMBER 2018 Romesh Ranganathan is back with a brand-new show, The Cynic’s Mixtape, and it’s his most brutally honest show yet. Fresh from The Misadventures of Romesh Ranganathan, A League Of Their Own and Judge Romesh, he’s putting showbiz aside to deliver a carefully-curated

Romesh’s cynicism has become his trademark, but since being nominated for Best Newcomer at the 2013 Edinburgh Comedy Awards this deadpan humour has become one of Britain’s most respected and popular comics.
