here’s never a dull moment at local retirement village, The Royce.

This month The Royce officially opened its new Wellness Centre and Studio with Federal Member for Lindsay, Melissa McIntosh MP. Ms McIntosh said it was an honour to officially open the Wellness Centre and catch up with many residents, even getting a shuffleboard lesson from one of The Royce’s famed team members.

“One of the things I like most about The Royce is that residents are surrounded by friends, quality care and laughter,” Ms McIntosh said.

“Seeing first-hand the incredible impact this new facility will make on the lives of the residents, and increasing their access to health and exercise, is a testament to the high standard of this great local facility.

“We have over 20,000 older Australians in Lindsay, and each one of them deserves the absolute best care, support and community.

In this year’s Budget, the Morrison Government is investing over $17 billion to improve aged care services, quality and safety to support older Australians to age with dignity and respect.”

T

he Morrison Government is providing up to $10 million for security infrastructure and up to $20 million for early intervention projects through round six of the Safer Communities Fund.

Federal Member for Lindsay, Melissa McIntosh MP said this is improving safety and security for people, families and businesses in our community.

“The Coronavirus pandemic has not stopped criminals from trying to take advantage of vulnerable Australians, and everyone should feel safe in our community,” Ms McIntosh said.

“We’re delivering this funding for projects that keep people safe from violence, harassment and other anti-social behaviour.

“The Safer Communities Fund can help deliver projects like CCTV, better lighting, or new fences.

This is part of improving security and protecting our community.

“I will work closely with our local community organisations and Penrith City Council to identify infrastructure projects that can be supported through this funding.”

Round six also provides up to $20 million in funding for early intervention projects.

“The early intervention funding stream will help assist young people at high risk from engaging in criminal or anti-social behaviour, build resilience, cultural connections and job readiness skills,” Ms McIntosh said.

U

nfortunately this week we are back to a restricted lifestyle due to the rapid growth of the Bondi cluster.

Full details are inside on page 7, but by now most would know that the conditions are much the same as the previous restrictions earlier this year, with some added conditions associated with wearing masks.

Nobody likes living with COVID or the impact on our way of life, and there will be lots of disappointment due to events cancelling and other planned activities having to be put on ice. But once again, we should remind ourselves that we are much luckier here than so many other countries.

I have friends that I keep in contact with in the US and the UK and I can tell you that the handling of COVID is extremely different on the other side of the globe.

The way our government traces where a COVID-positive person has been during their days of being infectious, and the public then being warned of those locations, is unheard of in most countries. Why? Because they’ve lost the battle, that’s why.

They have no idea how many positive cases are walking around and associating with others and infecting them. The best they can hope is that people will wear masks and practice social distancing. There’s no such thing as tracing.

And with the conditions in Australia being so much better by contrast, it is hard to believe there are people here who still think the whole thing is made up and “only fools could believe in COVID.” Trust me, people who think this are planted everywhere, and they all enjoy posting on our facebook page whenever there’s a new public alert.

They are far from helpful.

Whether you are a conspiracist, a non-believer or a realist, we are all on the same page when it comes to not wanting to live under restrictions, so why not just do the right thing anyway so that at least we go back to living a free life next week?

I don’t understand why some choose to ignore that 3.7 million people have died from this pandemic. Furthermore I can’t for the life of me understand why those same people think they should constantly pepper social media with their views, actually believing they know better than health experts. The craziest thing of all is their constant criticism, if listened to, would only result in people ignoring health orders and having us end up the same as the countries I spoke of above. Who in their right mind would want that? The mind boggles.

Stay safe everyone, I hope the next time I write my editor’s column I’ll be saying didn’t we do a great job containing it.

ollowing updated health advice from the Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant about the growing risk to the community, the following restrictions have been introduced for Greater Sydney, the Central Coast, Blue Mountains, Wollongong and Shellharbour; • Visitors to households will be limited to 5 guests – including children; • Masks will be compulsory in all indoor non-residential settings, including workplaces, and at organised outdoor events; • Drinking while standing at indoor venues will not be allowed; • Singing by audiences at indoor shows or by congregants at indoor places of worship will not be allowed; • Dancing will not be allowed at indoor hospitality venues or nightclubs however, dancing is allowed at weddings for the bridal party only (no more than 20 people); • Dance and gym classes limited to 20 per class (masks must be worn); • The one person per four square metre rule will be re-introduced for all indoor and outdoor settings, including weddings and funerals; • Outdoor seated events will be limited to 50% seated capacity;

• Previous public transport capacity limits, represented by green dots, will be reintroduced; • If you live or work in the City of Sydney, Waverley, Randwick, Canada Bay, Inner West, Bayside, and Woollahra local government areas, you cannot travel outside metropolitan Sydney for non-essential travel.

These restrictions are designed to

reduce the risk of further community transmission.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said we are once again asking the community to do what they do best and follow the health advice to get on top of this outbreak.

“We don’t take these steps lightly and we never want to impose restrictions unless we absolutely have

to,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“We know the effect this will have on residents and venues but we must take this action now to ensure we keep on top of this outbreak.”

Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant urged the community to play their part in controlling the COVID spread. “We need really high testing rates to make sure we’re stopping any chains of transmission and we’re continuing to urge people to come forward for testing, especially if you were in Westfield Bondi Junction (including the car park) at any time between 12 June and 18 June,” Dr Chant said. Health Minister Brad Hazzard said more than ever people need to use QR codes and wear masks when required. “We will be increasing supervision and compliance checks to make sure everyone is doing the right thing,” Mr Hazzard said.

“This pandemic is far from over and we all have to do our bit to protect the community.” The government and health experts will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updated information and advice. For more information visit www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19

Budget 2021-22: Western Sydney schools win big

G

lenmore Park High School, Mulgoa Rise Primary School and Cecil Hills High School are major winners from the NSW Budget 2021-22 with over $35 million in funding for construction and upgrades.

Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies said this budget is a real win for our school communities.

“At the last election I promised a new primary school for Glenmore Park and a Performing Arts and Learning Centre at Glenmore Park High. I am pleased to announce that this Budget delivers on those promises,” Tanya Davies said.

“This is a future focused Budget that builds strong foundations for our local students to succeed in their lives.”

Mulgoa Rise Primary School at Glenmore Park has received $23.6million to build a new primary school, as promised at the last election.

Works are already underway at Glenmore Park High School to construct a Performing Arts and Learning Centre, with $6.7million of funding to ensure the project is delivered.

A major upgrade of Cecil Hills High School will be undertaken with $4.6million in this year’s budget to begin construction.

Tanya Davies also welcomed the commitment to western Sydney roads with $899.7million over the next four years, including $201.4million in 2021-22 for the Western Sydney Growth Roads Program to accommodate population

and employment growth in western Sydney.

“Mamre Road from the M4 Motorway to Erskine Park Road, Mulgoa Road and the Horsley Drive from the M7 Motorway to Cowpasture Road have all received funding to be upgraded.” Tanya Davies said.

“At the last election I made a commitment that Mamre Road and Mulgoa Road would be upgraded, and this budget provides funding to ensure planning for these vital upgrades.”

The NSW Budget 2021-22 prioritises our election commitments, just as we promised, whilst turbocharging infrastructure and service delivery across the region.”

Highlights across the Mulgoa electorate and western Sydney include: • $943 million capital expenditure in 2021-22, ($8.0 billion over

four years), for the planning and construction for the NSW and Commonwealth Government funded Sydney Metro - Western Sydney Airport, to be completed in time for the opening of the new Western Sydney (Nancy Bird Walton) International Airport; • $269.4 million capital expenditure in 2021-22, ($1.3 billion over four years), for NSW and Commonwealth Government funded road upgrades to support the new Western Sydney Airport at Badgerys Creek, including The Northern Road between Narellan and Penrith and the M12 Motorway; • More than $1.0 billion to kick start work on the Bradfield City Centre, including: o $975.5 million for Stage 1 Enabling Works to establish, remediate and allow site access to the new Bradfield City Centre which

includes $105.5 million in operating expenditure from 2025-26 o $138.5 million for Bradfield’s First Building which includes a $24.9 million high-tech facility which will house $22.9 million worth of shared-used equipment for research institutions and industry to collaborate.

• Learn to Swim Active PreSchooler voucher program, with $100 vouchers being made available from this summer to children aged between three and six who are not yet enrolled in school.

• Community Building Partnership Program increase from $300,000 in the Mulgoa electorate each year to $400,000 delivering better facilities and infrastructure for the community.

Prue Car: Some community wins and big missed opportunities

ember for Londonderry and Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Prue Car, has called this week’s State Budget a story of community wins and big missed opportunities.

“Thanks to the incredible work of local parents, this week’s State Budget finally includes funding for a security fence at Cambridge Gardens Public School,” Ms Car said.

“Parents at Cambridge Gardens Public School have been working with me since 2020 to campaign for a security fence for their school, following 19 break-in incidents.

“I’m so pleased that Cambridge Gardens Public School will now get a security fence, after far too many break-ins at the school”, Ms Car said.

“I was proud to work alongside a group of determined local parents at Cambridge Gardens Public School to get this fence funded.”

Ms Car said the Stage 2 upgrade announced in the budget for Jordan Springs Public School will provide additional classrooms, another community win.

However Ms Car said there are

big missed opportunities in the NSW Budget and says that vital infrastructure projects have been overlooked.

“This includes the much needed high school for students in Jordan Springs and Ropes Crossing, as well as upgrades to Werrington Road to ease local congestion,” she said.

“The NSW Liberal Government has been in power for over a decade, and

they still won’t build a high school in Jordan Springs or upgrade Werrington Road.”

“Jordan Springs Public School has more than 700 students right now. The Liberal’s argument that a high school isn’t needed is a cop-out.”

“I’ll continue to fight hard for these local projects because they’re urgently needed.”

tuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith welcomed the release of the 2021-2022 NSW State Budget, saying it sees the NSW Government continuing to deliver for the people of Penrith.

Mr Ayres said the budget takes the next step in ensuring a safe and strong post pandemic recovery, bettering our State’s services and driving growth for a better quality of life for our residents and their families.

“This budget continues with our massive investments in our local schools, health, transport and infrastructure projects to support our community as it grows,” Mr Ayres said.

“We are investing to keep NSW COVID-safe and to keep our recovery going, investing in you with more support to help ease the cost of living pressures for families, and transforming our State with real reform for the future.

Penrith is set to benefit from: • Security fencing for Cambridge Gardens Public School.

• $14.1 million for ongoing school infrastructure projects – Cranebrook High School new learning centre, Jamison High School new hall, Nepean Creative Performing Arts High School new hall, Kingswood High School upgrade, Penrith Lakes Environmental Education Centre and Penrith Public School.

• $162.3 million in 2021-22 for the $1 billion Nepean Hospital redevelopment.

• $13.3 million to commence construction of the new Emu Plains Commuter Car Park • Community Building Partnerships increased to $400,000 per year for Penrith for the next two years.

• Convert Penrith station car park access to Opal Park and Ride.

• Continue planning for delivery of the upgrade of Mulgoa Road between Blaikie Rd and Jeanette St, Glenmore

Parkway and Jeanette St and Blaikie Rd and Jamison Rd. • $1.2 million to complete the 1.2km active transport connection from cnr Brougham St, Emu Plains to Mitchells Pass.

• $269.4 million in 2021-22 in capital expenditure ($1.3 billion over four years) for NSW and Commonwealth funded road upgrades to support

the new Western Sydney Airport including The Northern Road between Narellan and Penrith and the M12 Motorway.

Across NSW we are: • $44 million program to make a $100 voucher for swimming lessons available to every pre-school child aged three to six in NSW. • $150 million for the Free

Preschool program to continue until the end of 2022.

• $200 million for the new Multisport Community Facility Fund to invest in new or upgraded multi-sport facilities.

• Delivering shorter payment times for small business and a refreshed SME and Regional Procurement Policy.

• $82.2 million additional funding for Palliative Care on top of more than $220 million that the NSW Government invests each year.

• $90 million over four years to support women and children impacted by domestic violence.

• $28 million to tackle bushfire threat.

“This budget builds on our strong economic management credentials, helps keep NSW safe from the pandemic and prepares Penrith and NSW to not just to bounce back after COVID but go to the next level.

Penrith is going from strength to strength and this budget will keep fuelling confidence in our community.” Stuart Ayres said.

Cambridge Gardens Public School to receive security fencing Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith joined students, parents and staff at Cambridge Gardens Public school to announce that they will benefit from the record investment in school infrastructure with the NSW Government announcing that funding has been committed for security fencing upgrades at the school.

The project is part of the Department of Education’s Security Initiatives Program announced in the 2021/22 NSW Budget.

Stuart Ayres said the funding will provide Cambridge Gardens Public School with 700 meter perimeter fencing and CCTV cameras to improve safety of students, staff and visitors during and after school hours, and better protect the school facilities.

“This government is working hard right across the state to improve the infrastructure at our local schools, with funding for significant upgrades to student and staff facilities, security upgrades, outdoor space and improvements to accessibility,” Stuart Ayres said.

Education Minister Sarah Mitchell said that schools are better funded under the NSW Government than ever before.

“Children from preschool, right through to primary and high school will benefit from this year’s $21.5 billion education budget.

“With this budget, we are building on our long-term commitment to taking care of existing schools and providing students and teachers with the very best educational facilities,” Ms Mitchell said.

Stuart Ayres said this funding for York Public School will go towards shade covering for their new sand-pit offering some much-needed relief and protection from the harsh sun.

“It is my pleasure to support York Public School with this funding which I know will benefit the students and the school community.

“Providing students with safe, modern outdoor play spaces helps to create friendships and to promote active lifestyles,” said Stuart Ayres.

A new irrigation system, tank and turf were delivered and completed to enhance the school yard in 2020.

ew funding is now available for local men’s sheds, through round 22 of the National Men’s Shed Development Programme (NDSP).

Federal Member for Lindsay, Melissa McIntosh said Men’s Sheds contribute to the community spirit in Lindsay, and provide an essential space to support health and wellbeing.

“Our local Men’s Sheds provide a safe and friendly environment for men to get together with mates and work on meaningful projects, with the ultimate aim of improving their health and wellbeing,” Ms McIntosh said.

“This program enables Men’s Sheds to apply for grants of up to $10,000 to support men’s health and wellbeing, make improvements to the Sheds, and upgrade equipment.

The RSL in western Sydney is recruiting

he Returned and Services League (RSL) is Australia’s largest and most extensive and localised Veteran Support Community, run by veterans, for veterans and their families.

It is a community where likeminded veterans gather to offer assistance to fellow veterans, observe commemorative activities, and encourage camaraderie and social interaction.

The RSL comprises hundreds of ‘sub-Branches’ across most suburbs, cities and towns throughout the nation. The NSW Branch, a member-based veterans’ charity, comprises more than 340 subBranches – each offering a place for veterans to meet, to share experiences, to commemorate our Nation’s military history and as necessary, provide assistance to veterans in need.

On 11th June, the RSL ‘Far Western Metropolitan District’ launched the recruitment drive at Castle Hill RSL, an initiative aimed at growing the number of RSL Sub-Branch members across NSW to ensure that RSL remains regarded in the overall community as the most accessible and localised ‘voice’ acting for the whole

veteran community. The launch was presided over by District President David Ingram and attended by local Mayors, Parliamentary Members (State and Federal) and leaders of local community groups. The intent is to spread the message amongst serving and ex-service personnel that they are eligible and welcome to join their local Sub-Branch NOW, and benefit from the friendship, support and assistance that being a member can bring.

tuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith today announced that Emu Plains Sporting and Recreation Club (Emu Sports Club) will benefit from $80,000 in funding to support disability access under the NSW Government’s Infrastructure Grants program.

Stuart Ayres said the funding will help Emu Sports Club to continue supporting our local community.

“Upgrading the bathroom facilities at the club to meet Australian standards will ensure those less mobile or with a disability have improved independence and accessibility,” Stuart Ayres said.

Stuart Ayres said the latest round of ClubGrants funding has awarded over $6 million to 56 projects across sport and recreation, arts and culture, disaster readiness and essential community infrastructure.

“This funding is much-needed and will boost our local economy by helping local organisations to continue to serve our community,” Stuart Ayres said.

Mr Andrew Gardner, CEO of Emu Sports Club said supporting our community has always been a focus for Emu Sports Club, and our recent developments have focussed on ensuring the Club can meet the needs

of our local community and members.

A large part of this is ensuring fully accessible facilities are available for use by community members living with disability.

“Receiving the $80,000 grant will

allow a much needed upgrade to the disabled bathroom facilities which, coupled with the recently installed lift, will allow easy access to services for people with limited mobility.”

The $12.5 million annual program aims to fund projects to build or upgrade community facilities, and the latest round was one the largest yet in a response to weather events including drought, floods and bushfires, as well as the impact we have seen through COVID. The Infrastructure Grants program is made possible by Clubgrants Category 3, a fund which re-invests profits from registered clubs’ gaming machines into community projects.

Since 2015, the NSW Government has funded more than 439 community projects worth $73 million under the Infrastructure Grants program.

Sunset Station singers We are members of the “Sunset Station Singers” and we would love for you to come and join us. We sing on invitation to local Aged Care Facilities mostly but have also sung at different venues. Our group has been together for several years. Boosting headspace services for young Australians in Lindsay

T

he Morrison Government is providing over $1.2 million for headspace services in Penrith as part of our $26 million investment to ensure that young people can access mental health services where they need them and when they need them.

Federal Member for Lindsay, Melissa McIntosh said the funding will ensure better social and health outcomes for young Australians in Lindsay.

“Penrith headspace has been experiencing high demand, and this funding will help them expand their services and improve access to high quality mental health support for young people in our community,” Ms McIntosh said.

“The health and wellbeing of local people are my priorities, and this is particularly important to support from a young age. This important new funding will give more young people in our community the support they need.

“We’re delivering over $1.2 million to increase staffing capacity at the centre, improving the healthcare service, community development, administrative support and data processes.”

Minister for Health and Aged Care, Greg Hunt, said one in four young Australians are affected by a mental illness every year.

“Many young people have also been substantially affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, making it more important than ever to ensure access to youth mental health services,” Minister Hunt said.

“The funding reinforces our Government’s strong commitment to achieving better mental health for

all Australians and will complement our record investment of $6.5 billion in mental health and suicide prevention services in 2021-22.”

Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention, David Coleman, said headspace provides free or low cost youth-friendly support in four key areas, mental health, related physical health, substance misuse, and social and vocational support.

“Headspace offers a safe, welcoming place where young people can get non-judgmental professional help and peer support, so they can tackle their

challenges in a way that is right for them,” Assistant Minister Coleman said.

40 headspaces services located in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory will benefit from grants of up to $1.8 million each.

The grants are part of the Government’s $152 million investment in the headspace Demand Management and Enhancement Program, to reduce wait times and make capital improvements.

Over the next four years from 2021-22, the Government is investing $873.2 million in the national headspace network, this includes $758.2 million for the establishment of new services ongoing service delivery and enhancement of existing services.

The Government continues to make mental health a national priority, and provided a record $2.3 billion in the 2021-22 Budget for the National Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Plan to lead landmark reform of the mental health system.

Based on the principles of Prevention, Compassion and Care, the Plan will ensure that high quality, person-centred care is available to all Australians, regardless of where they live.

riends, family, Serving and ex-Naval personnel and members of various RSL Sub-branches from both near and far gathered at the Pinegrove Memorial Park on Tuesday 22nd June to farewell former Legend of the Nepean Desmond Victor Harper AM. Members of the Sub-branches formed an honour guard as the coffin was carried into the Chapel by family members and the service contained fond memories and acknowledgement of Des’ life-long contribution to the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), the Naval Cadets, his family and friends and to the community at large.

At the end of the Service, Penrith RSL Sub-branch presented a framed Australian National Flag and a Service Log to his daughter Karen.

epean Police Area command has welcomed 7 new probationary constables after they graduated at a ceremony at the Goulburn Police Academy last week.

The new probationary constables have been assigned to police area commands and police districts across the state, including Nepean.

Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith welcomed the recruits have joined the local Nepean Police Area Command this week.

“Our new police officers have chosen a career of service and will be a vital asset to the people of Penrith,” Stuart Ayres said.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the new officers for their contribution and congratulate them on the start of their exciting careers.”

Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott congratulated the new recruits who bring a fresh boost to the Force.

“Congratulations to the men and women of class 347, who graduated and will join the NSW Police Force at its strongest and most efficient,” Mr Elliott said.

“After eight months of world-class training, the attesting officers will join their stations next Monday and invigorate the policing capabilities of this state.”

The NSW Government has committed to invest $583 million to introduce 1500 extra police over four years to enhance community safety across NSW and is investing $60 million over four years to upgrade the Goulburn Police Academy.

oday I have decided to enlighten you with car security tips. Yep, you got it, I usually charge lots of money for the crap that’s about to pour from my fingertips, however you my avid fans, get it all for free.

From what I have gathered over my time on the planet, is that the almighty car can mean many different things to people and at times, I have often wondered why some males have married their wives and not the beloved car.

That hunk of metal that you have cashed yourself up to your eyeballs in, that sits (quietly) on the driveway is also the bearer of many of your darkest secrets such as the odd scratch, body gas that could wipe out the state forest and the odd nose pick at traffic lights. Singing Mariah Carey in high C and thinking that you sound great and not to mention the many babies who can give thanks to the backseat.

Now before I give you my (what I consider) security expertise my friends, I have often wondered why some people feel the need to name a car like Berty, Prudence or Thumper? Or have personal number plates with “Killer” or “Throbber” on a car the size of my finger nail or not enough vrrrrooom in the engine to kick start a kettle? Yes, I know I am off track, but I just needed to share that with you. Handy hint- want a plate like “Throbber” maybe upgrade from the 1300cc and go to a V8 (eye wink).

We have all been guilty of this; rushed, kids screaming, dog hungry, bottle’o calling your name in 3D, however it is imperative (my big word for the day-Imperative) to lock your car every time you get out of it. Hint three - Car alarm system, now to be perfectly honest, car stereos are not a big thing these days on the stealing scale as most cars come with the brand new one. However, some and I say some people do still buy a bells and whistles one. If you are going to have a 6 million car stereo in ya car – probably best to get an alarm installed.

Hint Four - Okay hands up who leaves car keys in the ignition while getting fuel (don’t lie, come on you know you do; I can see you reading this with a grin on your face). Okay, well, this deserves the Chuck Norris upper cut award in bronze, because yes folks, cars have been stolen from servos. Take

your keys with you, sorry yeah I know it will add 3 seconds to the fuel up time and take three off your lifespan. This is a big tut tut tut with an index finger point, coming from me and I’m the supposed expert, remember?

Hint five - Parking the love machine in a dark place, now unless you are doing a stick up (hold up) drug transaction or some other activity, that we can’t really describe here, it is a great idea to park in welllit areas and where people are around.

Hint Six - Pimping da ride - (can I get a hell yeah) you love the $10,000 tyre rims with the Swarovski crystals on each nut, don’t you? Well so do the baddies. If you are going to beef up the bad boy, it may be a good idea to have it as the Sunday ride only, fully garaged (you thought I was going to say fully sick didn’t you?) and also maybe as a handy hint- have a very hungry Pit Bull stapled to the driver’s side door or front bonnet.

It’s great that you are spending the equivalent of a mortgage on your car, and starving the family, however, be aware that it will draw as much attention as a state of origin match. Just be aware that it is high on the richter scale for car theft. (Just say’n).

So there you have it, Gina’s handy tips on car security, if all else fails..walk. (Cheaper anyway).

Rat-bait toxicity (poisoning) W

ith the increasing mouse population in NSW, people are turning to poisons in an attempt to rid their properties of these rodents. Before reaching for over-the counter poisons, pet owners are encouraged to think about the potential risks to their domestic pets.

Dogs, cats and other animals can be affected by ingesting rat bait directly or by ingesting rodents which have ingested rat bait. It is a condition to be taken seriously and early diagnosis and treatment may prove life-saving.

There are two major types of rat bait: • First generation drugs such as Ratblitz (active ingredient: Warfarin) have a short duration of action and require ingestion over a long • Second generation drugs such as Talon and Ratsak (active ingredient: Brodifacoum) which have a long duration of action and a single dose may prove fatal.

Rat bait acts as an anticoagulant (prevents the blood from clotting) by depleting the body’s supply of vitamin K. Vitamin K is a fat soluble vitamin which is essential in the formation of clotting agents in the blood stream. It can take anything from 1-5 days after ingestion to begin to see the signs of intoxication.

Signs of intoxication are associated with bleeding and can range from very subtle signs such as pin point haemorrhages on the gums to heavy bleeding from anywhere. Symptoms of rat bait poisoning may include: • pale gums or small pin point haemorrhages on the gums • lethargy • bruising under the skin • blood in the urine or faeces • bleeding from the nose • continued bleeding from small wounds or cuts • vomiting and or diarrhoea • coughing or respiratory difficulties (laboured or rapid breathing) • seizures or muscle tremors

If you see your pet eating rat bait it is important to seek veterinary attention immediately. If you haven’t seen your pet ingest rat bait but find chewed or broken boxes, we also advise you to seek veterinary care as soon as possible. If you have the packaging of the rat bait please bring take this with you to your veterinarian for prompt identification of active ingredients. The effects on a pet which has consumed rat bait will depend on which rat bait was ingested, how long ago, and how much of the rodent was eaten.

Treatment for poisoning will depend on the severity of the toxicity and timing of ingestion. Blood may need to be taken for clotting tests and to assess for anaemia. Treatment may be medicating with vitamin K tablets, which unfortunately is in extreme short supply due to the increase in poisonings.

If you are using rat baits, make sure that they are always stored and used out of reach of children and other animals. Loose poison baits (pellets, meals) should not be used; instead the poison should be inside a bait station that cannot be accessed or opened by children and pets.

F

or some people, their pet is their world. They offer unconditional love, companionship, and are there for them when they need them.

Sometimes all it takes to turn your day around is the wagging tail and happy face of your dear old buddy.

Unfortunately, not all pet owners have the resources to be able to care for their furry friends as they’d so dearly like to.

That’s where we come in. We have identified this crying need in the Penrith community, and have successfully implemented vaccination programs to greatly reduce the incidence of Parvovirus in the community. These events provide an opportunity for pension and health care card holders to access free core animal health care. It was time to take our program further.

It started as a vision … now we aim to be the influence … and be the change for pets and people in need.

Over the past few weeks, we have travelled to rural regions of Tenterfield and Tamworth to assist local communities. Our team has a strategic direction that recognises that animal welfare is intimately connected to human welfare such that for an owner to provide the best care for their animal they themselves need to be socially connected, healthy and educated.

This can be a problematic concept for the animal industry to engage with, but the community minded human-centred approach taken by the teams at Greencross Vets, RSPCA and Petbarn Foundation

will facilitate sustainable change and along the way reduce Parvovirus across the state.

The Petbarn Foundation generously supported the event, by donating cat and dog food, as well as dog parasite prevention products. Overhearing a young couple leaving with their puppy, and the donations, saying “How awesome is this!”. These kinds of interactions can completely change their view of RSPCA, Council and Vets, and provide those people with the knowledge and skills to have happier and healthier pets.

A lot of the communities we work with have no idea about aspects of care, that we assume is common knowledge. These days are golden opportunities to change so much in an animal’s life.

A wrap up of our New England Trip TENTERFIELD A real community effort with a combination of RSPCA NSW, Tenterfield Vet, Mobile Vet Team, Greencross Vet (Coreen Ave), Vets Beyond Borders, Tenterfield Council and parasite prevention products and pet food donated by the Petbarn Foundation.

Local champion, Emily- who works for a local community service provider, identified clients in need of this service, arranged appointments and in many cases - transported clients and their pets to and from the event. What a legend! A wonderful example of local people going above and beyond for their community and clients!

It was great to have local knowledge from all the local services involved.

Veterinarians from local vet practices

will now be able to follow up with pet owners to further assist their pets.

The day also gave the local RSPCA branches an opportunity to take expressions of interest for desexing vouchers to make pet care even more affordable to those in need of assistance. Great turn out for our first event in the area.

The team were deeply humbled by the locals who welcomed them to the community and shared their stories

about the current mouse plague and how it was effecting their families.

Final numbers for the day: Dogs 46, with 25 microchipped on the day Cats 10, with 4 microchipped on the day GLEN INNES Our second day in rural NSW making a difference. The team from Greencross Vet Coreen Ave teamed up with RSPCA NSW, Vets Beyond Borders, Glen Innes Veterinary Hospital and Glen Innes RSPCA branch to provide free health checks , 95 vaccinations in an effort to protect local pets from parvovirus and cat flu and 52 microchips to ensure pets were returned safely to owners if they decided to seek adventures from home. The Petbarn foundation once again provided free food and parasite preventatives. A rewarding collaborative effort.

TAMWORTH Tenterfield and Glen Innes Healthy Pet Days were a great way to get our blended team ready for the big day in Tamworth. The day was run out of Tamworth Council Pound, and

we added three extra vet stations, manned by local veterinarians and TAFE vet nursing students. This bought a total of six pop-up stations providing health checks, vaccinations and microchipping for the pets of Tamworth.

Tamworth TAFE used the event as an opportunity for their vet nurse students to gain practical experience.

We loved sharing our knowledge with the 20 student nurses who were very helpful on the day Parvovirus is still an issue in the town, so this service is desperately needed. Tamworth always delivers on lots of animals and we did the following• Number of dogs vaccinated- 87 • Number of dogs also microchipped- 46 • Number of cats vaccinated- 51 • Number of cats also microchipped- 38 The owners could not believe their luck that they could access this free service for their pets and were incredibly grateful that they also left with a bag of food, so big thanks to the Petbarn Foundation!!

rank Portelli has spent a life in service to his country, his community and his family.

Chairman of Penrith RSL, Charter member and current Secretary of the Rotary Club of Nepean (formerly Penrith Daybreak), Rotary/Department of Education International (DEI) Liaison Officer and Examiner at Macquarie University (Department of Chiropractic) just touch upon Frank’s current community involvement.

Born in 1953 in Mosman, Frank moved with his family to Yagoona and achieved his School Certificate at Birrong Boys HS. Frank attended the Sydney College of Chiropractic, graduating with a Diploma of Chiropractic and a Diploma of Osteopathy in 1975 and opening his own practice in Penrith in 1976, which is still in operation.

Frank joined the United Chiropractors Association in 1975 and has since held the positions of State Branch President, Secretary, Ethics Committee Chair, Membership Chair, Student Liaison, National Secretary and Working Committee for the unification of the two Chiropractic Associations.

Frank joined the Penrith Chamber of Commerce from 1977-81 and held the positions of Vice President and Secretary.

Frank is the current Chairman of ‘The Cottage Trust’ from 1995-2021, which raised the funds to build ‘Hope Cottage’ at Nepean Hospital.

‘The Cottage Trust’ is representative of the Rotary Clubs of Nepean, Penrith and Penrith Valley.

In addition, Frank has held several District positions with Rotary, including Assistant Governor, Membership Chairman, Youth Exchange Committee Chair (5 years) and was an original member of the working party to develop ‘Rotary Youth Exchange Australia – A Guide to Club & District Certification 2005.

Frank has been awarded three Paul Harris Fellow honours for services to both his professional body (Chiropractic) and Rotary – The Cottage Trust.

He has also been awarded The Knox Medallion, the highest award offered by the Sydney College of Chiropractic for service to the College and the RSL & Services Association Community Award (Highly Commended).

Whilst currently the Chairman of Penrith RSL, Frank has also been a Board member, past Chair of Youth & Community Engagement, past member of the City of Penrith RSL Sub-branch Management Committee (Chair Youth Control).

Frank joined the Citizens Military Forces (CMF) in 1970 and

served until 1972.

On a personal level, Frank has been married to wife Robyn for 47 years, tying the knot in 1974 at St Johns Camden Anglican Church.

The couple have lived in the Penrith region for the past 42 years and have three children (Alexis, Simon and Nicholas) and 4 grandchildren (and a 5th on the way).

Having already lived a full life on a personal, business and Rotary level, Frank took yet another challenge in 2020 with the Counsel of Regional Exchange Leaders (COREL).

“In 2009 I was asked by the New South Wales District Chairs to be the link between the Department of Education International (DEI) and the then 9 districts that placed students in NSW schools,” said Frank.

“I currently still hold that position as the Rotary/DEI Liaison Officer..

“My role is to convey information from DEI to the district chairs, collect inbound and outbound information for DEI as well as apply for AASES

forms and distribute them to the district chairs, ensure that all District and Club personnel have up to date ‘Working With Children’ checks, amongst other requests that DEI may have from time to time.

“In 2013, DEI resolved that they would only deal with a registered entity, so as the Rotary/DEI Liaison Officer, I commenced proceedings to register Rotary Youth Exchange NSW and was elected as RYENSW President, which I held until 2020.

Frank and the local Rotary Clubs are always looking for new members to bolster the ranks and would like to appeal to younger members of the Nepean District to consider joining a Service club.

“Family comes first, followed by work then Rotary,” said Frank.”

“We have recruited four new members this year and are finding the younger generation wants to help, particularly at specific events.”

22 Learn to swim voucher program

M

ore pre-school aged children will be safer around water under measures announced in the 2021-22 NSW Budget.

The $44 million program will make a $100 voucher for swimming lessons available to every pre-school child aged three to six in NSW. “Following the success of the Active Kids program, which has seen NSW families save more than $320 million on sport registration fees since its inception, the new learn to swim voucher program will ease cost of living pressures even further,” Mr Perrottet said.

“Importantly, every parent should enjoy the peace of mind their child will be safe in and around the water, with the new voucher program helping to achieve this.

“Ultimately this is the type of support that will not only save people money, it could help save lives.”

Minister for Sport Natalie Ward said it is critical children have basic swimming and water safety skills.

“Australia is all about sunshine, BBQs and swimming, either at your

local pool, beach or river,” Mrs Ward said.

“Families across NSW will be able to use these vouchers when they enrol their children in swimming lessons, helping to ensure every NSW child has access to quality swimming and water safety education before they start school.”

The program adds to the more than 130 NSW Government rebates, concessions and other measures available to help families with the cost of living.

Similar to the Active Kids program, vouchers will be redeemed at registered providers.

e dined a t Sittano’s in Penrith recently and judging by the number of people sharing our experience, the restaurant must be one of the hottest spots in town.

Bookings were obviously booming and no sooner had a table vacated, it was eagerly occupied by a seemingly neverending queue of eager diners.

The menu is extensive and offers something appealing with a wide range of options, from seafood, pastas, pizzas, steak and other meat dishes and also vegetarian.

It must be stated up front if you’re looking for a restaurant offering value for money, Sittano’s is up there with the best.

The selections from the Starters menu are generous (and

delicious), whilst the main course offerings ensure you cannot leave hungry at the end of the night.

We had the Arancini Rosso and Garlic Prawns for our Starters and these two dishes kicked off our dining experience fabulously, both deliciously cooked and generous servings.

Our main courses of Risotto Aragosta and Gnocchi Comarche continued the savoury experience, although there was regretfully simply too much for us to finish either dish.

Problem solved in an instant, with a ‘take-home’ offer and the chance to enjoy the remainder of the two dishes the following day for lunch.

Great service from everyone at the restaurant, from the maitre d’ to the wait staff and it was a pleasure to dine in such a friendly environment.

Sittano’s ticked every box and we’ll be back very soon for another great dining experience.

obs, keeping people safe, boosting the economic recovery and creating a prosperous future through innovation, continued investment and reform is at the heart of the NSW State Budget.

After the sharpest fall in nearly 80 years the NSW economy is rebounding rapidly with 300,000 jobs added since the height of the pandemic in mid2020.

The Budget forecasts above trend economic growth of 3¼ per cent for 2021-22 and unemployment, currently at 5 per cent, falling to 4½ per cent by 2024-25.

Improved economic conditions have contributed to the State’s strengthened operating position, with a return to surplus of $0.5 billion now forecast in 2024-25.

Job creation remains a key focus with a record $108.5 billion infrastructure investment helping supercharge the recovery.

Hundreds of thousands of hardworking public sector workers will receive a significant wage increase of up to 2.5 per cent, which is forecast to cost approximately $2.7 billion over four years.

ydney property market continues to be hot with house prices still rising 1.7 percent for the current month so far and 14.4 percent this year alone.

The average Sydney house has doubled in value since 2012. Fantastic if you are an owner of property, not so good if you have plans to buy locally in the future.

Overall property values around Australia have increased 10.9 percent over the last 12 months.

This surge in property value has caused all our major banks to forecast 20 to 30 percent rises in property values around Australia this cycle with strong growth continuing for some time and then slowing down over the next couple of years.

The number of properties for sale in Australia is still in short supply The supply of properties for sale just can’t keep up with demand.

Capital city demand continues at a vigorous rate, with buyers out in force – owner-occupiers, investors, and first home buyers – at a time when available supply is struggling to keep up.

The stock of advertised properties

is below year-ago levels across the capital cities.

At the same time “time on market” continues to decline. These are signs that property values will continue to rise.

ember for Penrith Stuart Ayres ushered in a new era for the Nepean Hockey Association when he cut the ceremonial ribbon to open the million dollar amenities block at the Penrith Hockey Stadium on Saturday.

Located in the grounds of the Kingswood Campus of Western Sydney University, the ‘state of the art’ facility has been a long time dream, and in serious planning for the last three years. It is a tribute to the dedication and hard work of the Association executive and Turf Committee.

Cost of the amenities block was $925,000 but, the additional cost of footpaths and other supporting facilities took the total cost to just one million dollars!

Turf Committee chair Patrick Hurley opened proceedings on Saturday morning with general welcome to all and introduced Association President Kieran Knowles who applauded the relentless efforts of everyone involved in any way over the last five years.

Kieran said he had three goals for his team when he became President – • To achieve a special lease arrangement with the University to allow more autonomy for hockey in the control of the stadium facility.

• To convert the second playing surface from sand to artificial grass.

• To obtain a quality amenities block to rival any other complex in NSW. ‘This complex represents final success and I place on record my sincere thanks to all members – men and women – who have contributed in any way,’ he said.

President Kieran made special mention of the long list of Association Life Members – many of whom were present.

‘I am reluctant to attempt to name them all for fear of missing some, but these are the people who have contributed so much to hockey in Penrith for many years and we place on record our appreciation of their service,’ he said.

Stuart Ayres told the large crowd he was very proud to play a part in achieving such a facility for the hockey playing fraternity in Penrith and surrounding centres.

‘Everything is happening for Penrith in recent times and our Government is pleased to deliver such resources for many organisations,’ he said.

He praised the efforts of local hockey leaders and stated he was certain many other community organisations will also benefit from such quality facilities.

The Member for Penrith thanked the building contractors Ausco Modular Pty Limited for their quality, efficient service.

He said he travelled afar afield as Victoria to inspect various sporting complexes and was very happy with the final decision and choice of Ausco.

David Thompson, CEO of Hockey NSW, added his words of congratulations to President Kieran and his team and said the new Penrith facility was another important cog in the network of such facilities being established throughout NSW. ‘They guarantee the future strength and success of hockey in our State,’ he said.

He added that such facilities are not achieved without responsible administration and said that the Penrith stadium was the equal of any of comparable size in NSW.

x c i t i ng young golfer C h a e w o n (Grace) Lee from Glenmore Heritage Valley GC has won another title in 2021, securing the 16+ Years title at the 2021 JNJG Macarthur Junior Masters, which was held at Campbelltown GC over 13th14th June.

Grace also finished tied for 2nd overall in the tournament, which was won by Ann Jang (Toukley GC).

Kade Webber from Stonecutters Ridge GC also had a good tournament, finishing in third spot overall behind NSW hottest young golfer of 2021 Jeffrey Guan (The Australian GC)

in first spot and Ali Rachid (New South Wales GC) in second. Kade also finished third in the 16+ Years age group, again behind Guan and Rachid.

Golden Fox out of this world A ustralia’s Jessica Fox stunned the international canoe slalom world on the second day of the 2021 ICF Canoe Slalom World Cup #2 in Markkleeberg, Germany, when she took home the win in the women’s K1, in a race that was titled as ‘out of this world’ by her competitors.

Fox, who kicked-off the preOlympic World Cup season with a gold in the women’s C1 and bronze in the women’s K1 at last week’s ICF World Cup in Prague, followed up with gold in the women’s K1 in Germany on Saturday, winning by an impressive 3.52 seconds ahead of Germany’s duo of Ricarda Funk in second and Elena Apel in third.

The win comes despite a twosecond penalty for a gate touch, but in a stunning performance on the rest of the course, the three-time K1 world champion and dual Olympic medallist never left any doubt that she will be the one to beat come Tokyo.

“It was a great run and I’m really happy with that race. To make a little mistake at the top but really push hard into the finish and pull off some hard moves at the end, I was really pleased with that,” a beaming Fox said after her race.

“I didn’t feel great at the top, maybe a bit of nerves and a bit tentative, but as soon as I got out of that middle section I knew I really had to go for it on the bottom and not give any time away so I really attacked it and went for the riskier direct move on gate 22 and 23 and managed to pull it off. So really pleased, really pleased today,” Fox analysed her run.

The 27-year old was also full of praise for her German competitors, after beating them into second and third on their home course, especially for Ricarda Funk, who she will be lining up against in Tokyo again.

“Ricarda is an incredible competitor and she always races super well. She’s always present for the big finals and

every race, the heat, the semi. I knew she would be really difficult to beat here but it’s never been the intention to come here and beat her or any competitor. It’s always about putting down my best runs and to see where that places me. So it’s really special to share the podium with the two German girls. It’s really special and I’m very happy to take the win.”

It is the first World Cup season since mid-2019 for Australia’s Olympic team canoe slalom paddlers and it’s almost two years since Fox stood on top of the podium in the K1 and C1 at the 2019 ICF World Cup Final in Prague in August 2019. Taking home the double World Cup win was followed by two silver medals at the 2019 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships in La Seu Spain with both results locking in her Tokyo selection.

“At Seu at the world champs I was second, but still really pleased with my race, so I think it’s extra special to put down a fast run that I’m proud of and that wins,” Fox said.

Fox qualified for the final in Markkleeberg with a second place in the semi-final on Saturday morning, while sister Noemie Fox, who made the semi-final following a strong tenth place in the heat, finished 17th overall.

Jessica Fox and Noemie Fox have also both qualified for Sunday’s women’s C1 semi-final, which will be another chance for a medal.

For Tokyo team mate and Rio Olympian Lucien Delfour the World Cup in Germany did not go to plan, after he finished the semi-final with two 50-second penalties and a twosecond penalty for a gate touch.

“I had a bit of a shocker to be honest.

At gate two I was too tight and I missed it. I kept on going and I tried to keep the lines really tight and I missed out again on gate eight all together.

That doesn’t happen very often and

it’s frustrating. Usually we get 50 at gates, because we are a bit tired, especially at those upstream gates and the head is not fully in but this time, I completely missed the gate, which is really frustrating and not very usual at all,” Delfour summed up his race selfcritically.

Despite the unexpected mishap, Delfour was still thankful for the opportunity to be finally back on the international racing circuit.

“It’s always a good experience being able to travel again and paddle on different courses, like Prague and Leipzig, courses that I really like and we don’t get to paddle on them very often. So it’s been good experience overall. Now we are off to Pau (France) and we will also get to paddle on the Paris 2024 course for the first time, which is pretty exciting,” Delfour added about the plans ahead.

Fellow Tokyo team mate Daniel Watkins will join the action again on Sunday, after qualifying for Sunday’s men’s C1 semi-final with a strong third place in Friday’s heats.

lenmore Heritage Valley GC and Springwood CC have both won through to the playoffs in the 2021 Golf NSW Master Pennant competition.

Playing the final round away from home, Glenmore fell 5-3 to Muirfield CC but would beat the same club for the Division 2, Section 3 title by less than one point (30.5 - 30.0), thus earning a berth in the playoff series which begins on Sunday.

Springwood was also playing away from home at Balgowlah but scored a crushing 6.5-0.5 win to not only knock Section leaders Moore Park GC out of top spot in Division 4, Section 1 but also claim a berth in the playoff series.

Twin Creeks CGC fell 8-0 to finish at the bottom of Division 1, Section 2 and will now play in the Relegation playoffs, which also begin this Sunday.

Joining Twin Creeks in the relegation playoffs will be Stonecutters Ridge (Division 1, Section 3) which fell 4.5-3.5 to Monash, Windsor CGC (Division 3, Section 3) which fell 7.50.5 to Lakeside Camden and Wallacia CC (Division 3, Section 1) which fell 6-2 to Bankstown GC.

Yeo: Comfort in combinations

EW SOUTH WALES lock Isaah Yeo is feeling as confident as he ever has ahead of State of Origin II in Brisbane on Sunday as the Blues aim to win the series in enemy territory.

Yeo will play his fourth origin as coach Brad Fittler sticks with six Panthers including the halves combination of Jerome Luai and Nathan Cleary.

“The first time in camp last year was a real eye opener and I felt that’s where I learnt a lot,” Yeo explained.

“This time around you feel a lot more comfortable there.”

Yeo’s shift from playing on the edge to the middle hasn’t been an overnight success; he has worked hard to become one of the competition’s elite ballplaying forwards in combination with the halves who are in career best form.

“I have been able to nail down the lock role and I’m consistently evolving and trying to work on things there – I’m loving it there to be fair,” he said.

“I feel like we’ve got a good combination, we worked really hard on it at training and a lot goes into it and it is being put on the field really well.”

The Panthers were top of the competition table heading into the start of the origin period before losing two consecutive games. Yes – up to seven players were missing but experience was the silver lining to the ending of the 12 game winning streak.

“We have been lucky because we have put some

wins on the board,” Yeo said.

“It’s a good learning curve and has given people opportunities and that’s how you learn, by playing, and I think we have learnt some lessons off those games. We will definitely be better for the run if it happens again.”

The rest of 2021 promises to be memorable should NSW win the series. Yeo and the Panthers are determined to go one step further than last year’s grand final defeat.

“My goal for my career is to win a comp, I want

to win a premiership here and that’s our group’s focus. Every team says that but there is only a few realistic chances and we are definitely one,” he said.

Away from rugby league, Yeo and his partner Ashleigh are expecting their first child in November and the planning is well underway. However, the couple has decided against a gender reveal.

“You don’t realise how expensive all of the baby stuff is!” he joked.

Yeo is contracted to the Panthers until the end of the 2024 season.

Brandt enjoying a journeyman life abroad

ngus John Brandt is one of the highest-profile basketball players to emerge from the Nepean District.

Starting his representative career as a junior with the Springwood Scorchers, Angus would move to the Penrith Panthers for Youth League and play College Basketball in the United States from 20092014 with Oregon State University.

Even at this early stage, Angus had shown aboveaverage ability, a willingness to listen and learn and also to play a key role in a team environment.

Angus signed a three-year deal with the Sydney Kings in 2014 and would go on to win the NBL Rookie of the Year title in the 2014-15 season.

In 2016, Angus signed with Neptunas Klaipeda of Lithuania and played out the remainder of that season, helping his team reach the LKL Finals.

Upon his return to Australia, Angus signed a two-year deal with the Perth Wildcats, winning two NBL titles with the franchise and also taking out the team’s Most Improved Player award in the 2016-17 season.

In 2017, Angus signed a two-year extension with the Wildcats.

He joined the Hawkes Bay Hawks for the 2018 NZ NBL season and after a solid season, was named to the NZNBL All-Star Five.

Angus missed the 2018 NBL pre-season due to injury but returned to help the Wildcats claim the Minor Premiership, then defeat Melbourne in the Final to claim the NBL title.

Angus exercised the European ‘out-clause’ in his contract with the Wildcats in 2019, playing firstly as a short-term injury replacement in the NZNBL,

then joining Wuhan Dangdai in the Chinese NBL. He moved on to Italy later that year, signing with Pistoia Basket 2000.

However the season was cancelled in 2020 due to Covid-19.

Later that year, Angus signed with the Shiga Lakestars of the Japanese B League and is looking to continue his career in Japan in 2021-22.

Angus also enjoyed quality time in the Australian National Men’s team (Boomers), playing at the 26th World University Games in Shenzhen, China in 2011 and in 2014, he was a member of the Australian team which played in the four-game Sino-Australia Challenge Series.

In June 2017, Angus was named in a 20-man Australian squad ahead of the 2017 FIBA Asia Cup and was subsequently named in the final 12-man squad.

Later that year, Angus was named in a 12-man Australian squad to compete in the first two games of the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers.

A winner of two Gold Medals (2014 SinoAustralian Challenge and 2018 Commonwealth Games) with the Australian Men’s team places Angus in very illustrious company, with success on the International stage an often very elusive goal for Australian Men’s Basketball teams.

Angus’ life overseas has been one of the highlights of his life and also introduced him to his wife Megan, who shares his journeyman travels around the globe.

“Playing abroad has allowed me the opportunity to experience and be immersed in different cultures,” said Angus.

“The experience has been amazing.”

Among the fond memories are the crowds in Japan, which Angus said are the most polite crowds in the world.

Italian fans are more extreme in their passion, with the normal practice to separate fans of opposing teams at opposite ends of the stadiums, whilst Angus’ experience in Lithuania has included fans lighting flares in the stands when a favoured team loses a game..

Having previously seen the end of his playing career in the early-30’s, Angus is now looking further ahead and is keen to play on for at least another 5-6 years.

Angus has a Degree in Strength & Conditioning and once his on-court commitments ultimately come to an end, he’s keen to continue an active role in the sport.

Until then, we can continue to watch him achieve personal goals on the international stage, proud in the knowledge of his local origins.

Celebrating 30 years since the mighty Panthers’ first grand final win

O Y C E SIMMONS still remembers the hurt of grand final defeat in 1990. It served as great motivation for what was to come in his final game of rugby league as his name was etched into folklore. He became everybody’s mate when he declared he’d have a schooner with everybody.

“I have been in other countries and have been walking down the street and someone will yell ‘you still owe me that beer Simmons’, and it could happen anywhere in the world. It happens regularly still,” he laughed.

“Around Penrith it happens non-stop, and you get a beer put in front of you everywhere, it’s a good opportunity to meet people and say g’day.

I have been in Hawaii and walking down the street and someone has said, ‘there’s that beer’.”

Simmons’ playing career ended 30 years ago with Penrith’s maiden premiership which came after heartbreak in 1990.

“I can probably remember losing a grand final virtually more than I can remember winning it” he admitted.

“The pain of losing, to me personally is a lot greater than the joy of winning to be honest.

“In that following year (1991) we remembered the hurt and what it was like to sit in the shed and sink your head under the shower and cry like a big kid. The disappointment stuck in our mind.”

His recollections of the ’91 grand final are of the side’s second half performance and what was very close to the perfect half of football.

It was the Panthers completing their sets almost without fault before giving the Canberra Raiders possession deep inside their own half of the field.

“We learnt to be more intense for longer periods and you have to take the ball away from the opposition – that was the main thing learnt from 1990,” Simmons said.

Both of Simmons’ tries were the result of applying fundamentals of the game – running hard and tackling.

The first effort saw him crash his way over the top of Glenn Lazarus.

“There wasn’t much to do. I just ran hard, some things come from running hard. Lazarus had a bad sternum and my head hit him right in the chest and he went backwards.”

While he admits the side got a bit excited by their start nothing could come close to the jubilation after his second try.

“MG (Mark Geyer) was over there in a big space on his own when they went for the short drop-out, my reaction was to get over there and make a tackle.

He was on his own and they had four players attacking the ball. I wasn’t going over there to score a try, I was going to make a tackle. Then MG got the perfect bounce and managed

to get a pass to me. People forget how good a catch it was because he was running at pace and it took good hands to catch the ball, he never gets any credit for that.”

After 11 seasons at the club Simmons acknowledged the coaches he played under who worked towards making the side better each year.

“It was great enjoyment and great memories, after 11 years with the club to finally win a grand final after winning a few wooden spoons was pretty amazing really.” He said.

Simmons coached Penrith from 1994 to 2001 before a stint in England and the Wests Tigers. In 2016 he was inducted into the Panthers Hall of Fame. Today he works with Panthers and is the ambassador for The Royce Retirement Village.

with Dale ‘Tex’ Walker After a dynamic display in Origin 1, NSW will be looking to secure the series at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday night.

But, beware the wounded Queenslander.

Embarrassed by their 50-6 thrashing in Townsville, the Maroons will be no easybeats this time around.

For a number of reasons, I’m expecting this one will go down to the wire.

1. Josh Papalii was a major factor in Queensland’s series win last year and will return after missing the opening game in Townsville. His go forward will lay the perfect platform for the Maroons attack.

2. Christian Welch is one of the NRL’s leading front rowers and the momentum changed when he left the field early in Origin 1.

3. The debut of New Zealand Warrior Reese Walsh is a great decision in my opinion. If you are good enough to play in the NRL, then you are ready for Origin. His carefree attitude will keep him in good stead and although I’m a Blue through and through, I’m looking forward to Walsh linking up with Cameron Munster and providing plenty of entertainment.

4. Cameron Munster was noticeably underdone and produced one of his worst performances in a Maroon jumper. His frustrations got the better of him when kicking Liam Martin when he was on the ground. This type of display won’t happen again.

5. Dane Gagai grows another leg in Origin but failed to do so in game 1. His illness in the lead up affected

his performance and he had no impact whatsoever.

I’m expecting a better effort.

The Blues will still be brimming with confidence.

The first 20 minutes from Jarome Luai in Origin 1 was as good a debut at representative level as you’ll ever see. He continued to work well with Nathan Cleary and they traumatised the Queenslanders. The pair set up a left edge attack that will be one of the most dominant for the Blues in many years to come.

I can’t see a 50 point scoreline for NSW but I’m tipping they’ll win a tight one 24-16.

It took a while but Tyrone May has been dropped and will struggle to find himself back in the top 17 for the Panthers. The emergence of Izack Tago, along with top class youngsters Taylan May, Sunia Turuva, and Spencer Leniu provides Ivan Cleary with many options moving forward.

Unfortunately for Tyrone he didn’t take his chance when filling in for Nathan Cleary. I can only put it down to ongoing niggles and injury as he has struggled to keep up with the pace of the game.

It’ll be interesting to see whether the Panthers offload May, as he is off contract at season’s end.

I’m not going deep into neverending banter about the way the game of rugby league has changed in recent times but here’s my short and sharp two bobs worth.

One thing is for sure, the majority of fans are downright annoyed and confused. And none are more confused than the referees. The powers that be have barked that many different instructions at the men in the middle, they are now scared of making a mistake and are blowing the whistle on just about every small indiscretion or waving the arm in the air

for a 6 again call.

Slow and steady wins the race, the NRL have deadset come out like a wounded bull, it’s too much too early.

I’m not so sure the planning of the changes were strategised and implemented at the right time or in the correct stages. It has been a knee jerk reaction and not well thought out. These changes and crackdowns should have been advised in the pre season, executed in trials, not ten rounds into the competition.

Let’s hope we are not staring at the screens in disbelief this week!

Next week’s battle of the west against the Parramatta Eels should be one of the games of the season.

Parramatta are a much more confident outfit and will be ready for The Panthers.

Ivan Cleary will be relying on his stars coming through Origin injury free and they do have a five day break in between matches.

Returning to the winners circle against the Roosters, the Panthers showed their brilliant best after going behind 12-0 early in the game. But patience and no panic football paved the way for another impressive victory.

Once again Cleary and coaching staff will look to have the big boys running at Mitchell Moses and restricting his input next Friday.

Tip - Panthers by 8 The NRL is looking more like the English Premier League competition with the top four or five teams clearly being more capable than the majority of their rivals.

The Melbourne Storm’s 66-16 victory, after leading 60-0, over the Tigers was embarrassing, not only for the Tigers, but the competition as a whole.

At least the English Premier League has competitions within the competition, so to speak.

If you miss the top four, you are then fighting for a spot in the Europa League or if you fail miserably you are relegated to a lower division. Imagine that, the Brisbane Broncos and Canterbury Bulldogs dropped to play in the NSW Cup next year! They also have the FA Cup. Games are becoming predictable and that is a major turn off for fans and not what the NRL is about.

Villiame Kikau will be back on deck against the Eels next Friday.

Panthers physio Peter Green reports that Villiame Kikau suffered a hamstring injury against the Sharks two weeks ago, not an ankle concern as first thought.

Kikau has gone through a strenuous rehab program and will line up against the Eels next week at Panthers Stadium.

Full marks to Paul Gallen for his bravery against Justis Huni when knocked down in the last round.

He was totally gassed.

Gallen was outclassed by the most promising heavyweight Australia has produced in decades.

MEANWHILE, on Wednesday week (July7), Tim Tszyu faces a cagey Michael Zerafa in Newcastle.

It hasn’t been the perfect build up for Zerafa, but he isn’t making any excuses.

The 29-year-old has had to contend with Covid-19 restrictions imposed in his home city of Melbourne that have prevented him from accessing certain facilities that would normally form part of his training regime.

The deal, commencing on 1 August, will result in a massive boost for Football Australia and cement 10 ViacomCBS as the new home of football.

For the fans, this means that extensive coverage of Australia’s National Teams and the FFA Cup (in addition to the A-League and Westfield W-League) will be available on 10, 10 Bold and 10 Play, as well as

State of Origin II Preview

ow do the Maroons recover from a 50 point hammering in State of Origin Game I? It was presented as an enormous challenge to travel to Townsville and attempt to win a series opener in front of a predominantly home crowd in the first match played in a regional heartland. But the New South Wales Blues seemed unfazed as they systematically dismantled and destroyed the Queensland Maroons in a clinical performance to record the largest winning margin of a New South Wales team in State of Origin history.

The Queensland side looked dangerous early in the match when they played expansively and used short passes to break down the strangle hold the New South Wales defence was able to use to constrict them for most of the match. The likes of Cameron Munster and Harry Grant running and playing direct was a key element in the early stages. But with the loss of Christian Welch, no Josh Papalii and with their middle forwards giving the Queensland spine no time

or space to challenge the New South Wales defence the resistance from the Queensland team faded very quickly and the scoreboard began to tick.

The performance of the Blues was of the highest quality. But when the teams take the field at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday night the score in game one will be irrelevant. The Blues have made only the one forced change while the Maroons have lost Harry Grant and have shuffled some deck chairs to strengthen their team as they try to keep the series alive. The loss of Grant is huge, his leg speed and running threat through the middle of the field cannot be replicated by either of his replacements in McCullough or Hunt, this will serve as a great source of confidence for the Blues who will be more active around the ruck defensively with the lack of a true running threat out of acting half. It will allow them to focus their attention on pressuring the Queensland halves and to focus on the movements of young fullback on debut Reece Walsh.

the Maroons will have a very handy ball runner, but he also has a lack of experience not only in Origin / big games, but also in the NRL having only played 8 NRL games for the Warriors. This lack of experience is concerning, but his talent and ability is undeniable. Personally to debut Walsh, I probably would have leaned to starting him off the bench and injecting him at a time suitable to making his entrance into the game easier or even considered selecting him as the 18th man, that would have allowed him to experience the camp, but not play. I expect the Blues to be very physical with him when their defence gets close enough.

The Blues will need to contend with a parochial Queensland crowd, a referee who will give them no favours and most Rugby League supporters wanting to see an improved performance from the Queensland team, myself included, I want to see a contest, State of Origin games in my belief as contests and are about the story and path of each individual game, results are important, but State

4. Can the Maroons outside backs assist their forwards and provide the team with as many running metres as the Blues outside backs?

5. Do Andrew McCullough and Ben Hunt still have the skill, speed and game awareness to positively influence the result for the Maroons?

Put it on report and deal with it post-game

T

he NRL has looked a lot different in recent weeks. In fact since the Magic Round crack down on high shots, the game has reached an interesting phase of play.

There’s not one person I speak to who isn’t against rubbing out high shots in the game for ever. In fact it’s applauded.

BUT.....

The inconsistencies from week to week and game to game on interpretations of what constitutes a penalty, a sin bin, or a send off are mind blowing.

The players, and the referees for that matter, must be jumping at shadows every time there is a ‘dubious’ tackle on the field. In the modern game having a player sent to the bin equals at least 6 points, sometimes a lot more.

It cost the Roosters 14 points last Friday night when their prop Siua Taukeiaho was binned for a late hit on Nathan Cleary. That had roosters coach Trent Robinson fuming post match.

Even his counterpart Ivan Cleary felt sympathy for the Roosters mentor.

But this is just one of a litany occurring every weekend.

Rugby League fans know when they see a high intentional hit in our game, it stands out. But they don’t happen as often as are getting penalized in the context today.

The solution?

Unless it’s a real stand out bad shot, put it on report and deal with it postgame. While on the crackdown, it’s been advised that 70% of concussions in our game occur from either a player putting his head in the wrong spot when tackling, hence bad tackle technique, or from friendly fire, ie a teammate colliding whilst trying to make a tackle.

Maybe clubs have to start working more on their players defensive techniques? Because the shadows are becoming larger each time the ref blows his whistle when a tackle goes a tad wrong.

Rugby league is a contact sport, accidents will happen, we just have to start differentiating between what is and what isn’t!

And another thing: With game 2 or state of origin to be played out this Sunday at Suncorp Stadium, you’d have to think that Brad Fittler and his NSW blues are definitely in the box seat. With only one subtle change to his team, his opposition coach Paul Green has gone for a massive gamble by playing 18 yr old rookie Reese Walsh who will make his debut. He’s also made wholesale changes to a QLD team that were embarrassed 50-6 in game 1 in Townsville. I don’t expect NSW to win by that margin again in game 2 but I do expect a Blues domination with a far superior team right across the field.
